‘Dr Yusuf “Doc” Merchant presents a unique approach to dealing with what may well be the greatest social problem. Providing a wealth of information and practical advice, Happyness is an informative and curative book which busts a mountain of myths.’ —Amitabh Bachchan, actor ‘This book offers a riveting, transformative experience. Dr Merchant has captured the magic of positive energy, a never-give-up spirit, love, and positive intention. This will make you look at your personal evolution in a different, more thoughtful light.’ —Dr Ghazala Afzal Hameed, High Sheriff of Greater London, 2015-16 Do you want to help someone who is depressed? Is there a key to unlocking happiness? Do you sometimes feel used or taken for granted in your relationships? How do you deal with anger, jealousy, resentment, or sadness? Can anyone change the destined course of their life? What is the one proven antidote to addictive habits? What is the meaning of life? Is it possible to experience the fifth dimension? Dr Yusuf Merchant, or Doc as he is widely called, has been schooled by adversity from his childhood. He has lost friends and loved ones to dark addictions, endured heart-wrenching betrayal, lived on the streets, and struggled with the trauma of abandonment and the absence of hope. But he hit back against every crisis—and so can you. In this book, the master of mindfulness offers forty-two different ways to live a peaceful and fulfilling life. He punches negativity in the face and uses visualisation techniques to achieve his dreams. Bringing together scientific theories on the functioning of the brain and how it alters under stress, depression and addiction as well as existential questions on karma and the meaning of life, he concludes that it is self-belief along with integrity of character that offers a short-cut to happiness. If you want to lead a more successful and spiritual life, or if you want to take control of your destiny, the answers lie within these pages.
First things first. I am not into too many 'life lessons' sort of books. But when someone like Dr Yusuf Merchant wants to tell you a bit about it you sit up and take note. Simply because of what the man has done and continues to do. Because of that or despite that (whichever way you want to look at it) I was a bit sceptical about reading this one. But boy, did the book keep me hooked? It did, by the proverbial mile.
These are anecdotal, autobiographical and inspirational accounts of slices of life, emotions, journeys and all that you feel is wrong with your life. Dr Merchant has an informal narrative style. He writes just the way he talks. And you listen because he does it eloquently. A dash of humour interspersed with melancholies almost tragedies and how one gets affected in life because of them is narrated with great care. Simple solutions are offered as well. And explained scientifically juggled with philosophical adages. The book isn't preachy at all, it is persuasive and pretty much a friend as you carry it along.
Some desperate accounts of the author's childhood where he portrays himself as a rebel (with or without a cause), his insecurities, his judgmental nature and finally his resolve to be what he is today is as real as it is inspirational. You know that the healer himself needed healing, is just as prone to human frailties and temptations and is as human as any other person can be. He goes on to become one amongst us to one standing out whilst remaining one amongst us. It's really why you must read this book.
Definitely recommended for you whether you think you are living a great life or a wretched one.
Doc , you have been my friend .. my mentor .. my guide .. and I’m in complete gratitude for having shown me the path to happiness... Over time and countless interaction you have successfully helped so many thousands like me .. simply .. to see the light . Happyness is a fantastic book .. which anyone can pick up and apply any of the simply explained funda’s to themselves . The beauty in the way they are penned with live examples are easy to grasp and entertaining to read . I do hope everyone can change a bit of their lives .. for the better with HAPPYNESS 🌱
So there is this new book at no 1 on the WH SMITH’S Charts, by the name, ”Happyness- Life Lessons from a Creative Addict”, almost within a month and half of its launch!!! What is so special about this book and what could be the reason for its meteoric climb?
Happyness is written with one and only one intention - Each one of us deserves to be happy. It’s not so complicated IF one chooses it!!
Each chapter is a slice of the author, Dr Yusuf Merchant’s life. There is nothing fictional about it though the absurdity of some chapters might seem to suggest so. Like a typical Bollywood blockbuster, it has action, emotion and humour.. and the real hero is the spirit, which does get crushed under each disaster, does gets frustrated with each block, does get negative BUT then decides to make a choice, to either carry on being miserable OR choose a different action or reaction, which ultimately leads to choosing Happyness... Filmy though it may sound but it’s the truth.
Dr. Yusuf Merchant, or Doc, as he is fondly called is no hero. In fact he is just like another you, riddled with insecurities, fears and complexes...goes through a colourful life filled with upheavals, mostly due to his own actions and reactions, BUT it’s how he learns from them and overcomes each of his demons has made him this awesome DOC!
All his learnings from his life experiences is beautifully scripted in the 42 chapters of this book. There is a relatedness with them.. ..and one feels it’s doable.. making that choice, to be Happy is doable!
A little about Doc... I have had the privilege of knowing him for the last 5 years or so... his official credentials can be looked up on the internet; but what I’d like to share is his humaneness... Someone called him the the original jaddu ki jhappi wala doctor! And I couldn’t agree more...and this jhappi business is happening well before the Munna Bhai series, I assure u! When one meets Doc, he just envelopes you in a big bear hug!! More than half of your worries are taken care of right there and the rest is dismissed with his “ it good only na” comment! Every calamity in your life is leading to something positive, he assures you...which most of the times leaves one bewildered, considering the proportion of that calamity in one’s head, but lo and behold, it DOES turn out that way!! And the secret behind it is that he BELIEVES in it! It is with this belief that he had been able to turn so many lives around. Each chapter in his book Happyness has lead to this belief... So guys, Happyness is doable! Go get a copy!
PS - If you are ready to take a few more steps , there is this throbbing testimony on the Happyness book. In fact, it’s a full novel, “White Magic” by Arjun Nath. It’s a novel about a transformation of an addict, from the bottomless dark depth of addiction to recovery to light! The catalyst being Docs fundas or beliefs.
We all have a song that we associate with different times in our lives. Later in life, when we listen to that particular song, memories come flooding back. Sometimes the reverse association also works in that a particular event in our lives also reminds us of a song from our past.
Do you have a favourite song? A song that reminds you of a particular time in your life when you hear it?
Whenever I think of Dr. Yusuf Merchant, a.k.a. Doc and ‘BHAI’, the song I remember is “To Sir, with Love” sung by Lulu in the movie by the same name. I am sure a lot of you must have read the book or seen the movie. I feel the same emotion that the characters felt when they looked back on how their lives changed because of this one man who simply refused to give up on them.
Doc evokes emotions that are akin to nothing I have felt before. He is not related to me, yet I feel so connected to him. He is not my teacher yet so much of my learning comes from him. He is not my friend, yet I share my deepest fears with him….
My journey of almost 5 years now with him has given me an incredible insight into human relationships and the challenges of growing up and rearing children. Incredible!!!
There are times, even now, when my first port of call for advice on both, issues and non-issues, is Doc. I am not saying he is the be-all and end-all of everything. Having journeyed with him I have begun thinking from alternate perspectives. “What would Doc say?” sometimes that alone helps…
This book that he has written is an insight to his learnings from life and he endeavored to share it with the world at large. Those of us who claim to know him, know where he is coming from and wonder how he could have written it so succinctly and magically. For those of you who will journey through the book and imbibe its teaching, it will be a life-changing experience. Those of you who don’t, I can only implore you to read maybe one or two chapters and then decide….
To you, with Love.
As a corollary which is soooo important the following contributions just have to be mentioned. The poignant illustrations by the one and only Kriti Monga crave your attention. They are awesome. Arjun Nath is someone none of us can ignore. His book "White Magic" is a prequel and a sequel. Do read it. You will complete your journey....for now. The project was overseen by the inimitable Nilanjana S Roy who is a legend by herself.
With so much going for the book all of you must "Pay It Forward!!!"
I was driving to the hospital on an unusually hot day when I heard a RJ advertising the book #Happyness by Dr. Yusuf Merchant, on FM radio. It was the first time I had heard someone talking of books on national radio. The title of the book and affirmative words spoken by the RJ, compelled me to logon to the Amazon app on my phone and order the book right away.
God has His own ways to bring you solace when your life seems to be an unending ordeal. This time, my serendipitously ordering this book was a reinforcement of my belief.
The back cover of the book had the following questions that fanned my curiosity to devour the book as fast as I could (read):
- Do you want to help someone who’s depressed? - Is there a key to unlocking happiness? - Do you sometimes feel used or taken for granted in your relationships? - How do you deal with anger, jealousy, resentment or sadness? - Can anyone change the destined course of their life? - What is the one proven antidote to addictive habits? - What is the meaning of life? - Is it possible to experience the fifth dimension?
Dr. Merchant, or Doc as he’s widely called, has been schooled by adversity from his childhood. He has lost friends and loved ones to dark addictions, endured heart wrenching betrayal, lived on the streets, and struggled with the trauma of abandonment and the absence of hope.
But he hit back against every crisis - and so can you.
In this book, the master of mindfulness offers forty-two different ways to live a peaceful and fulfilling life. There are two simple rules in neuroscience that govern the plasticity (changeability) of our brains: Rule 1: The nerve cells that fire together, wire together. Rule 2: The nerve cells that do not fire together, do not wire together.
There’s a deeper meaning to Rule number 2, which, implies that we can change anything about ourselves, including learnt behaviours. When we persist in indulging in negative self-talk, our brain opens up a repertoire of similar emotions experienced in the past. It is these old connections that make us feel lousy and depressed. We can force ourselves to do engage in positive self-affirmations and stop doing the negative self-talk. Also take note that the words we use to describe our feelings govern the feelings we experience.
If you want to lead a more successful and spiritual life, or if you want to take control of your destiny, the answers in this book can quench your thirst.
It’s the student who decides not only who the teacher is, but also the teachings that he or she will imbibe. Be a universal student. Let the universe open up its classroom. Learn.
I am not a big fan of self-help books. They are all good at saying the same thing in different words. I am not saying that they do not make sense, just that I believe reading them and practising them are two different things all together. Therefore, after reading a few books from the genre, I had decided to stay away from them. I would have not picked up Happyness either if my 2018 book challenge hadn’t forced me to pick up book with a yellow cover. So when I picked up this book I wasn’t expecting much except striking off the yellow cover book from my book challenge. However, I found Yusuf Merchant’s style of writing and explaining concepts interesting and simple at the same time. I wouldn’t say that the book is one of those life changers that people expect self help books to be, but it’s not bad either. A few things that stood out for me are: 1) Yusuf helped me understand why reading books like these can be beneficial in the long run if not immediately 2) There was a chapter in the book that threw some light on parenting, which I thought made a lot of sense 3) There are a few visualisation exercises mentioned in book which seem to be easy yet effective 4) The last chapter in the book gives some easy to follow lifestyle changes that might be good for people suffering from depression.
All in all, the book is a good one time if you are seeking a dose of positivity.
I recommend this book - HIGHLY... there is something in it for each one of us vibrating with great energy and learning.
Please don’t let this book be a test of your speed of reading, read it slowly - over time. I re-read some chapters and each time a new message came up for me!
No, not a message but a ‘life lesson’ as the author calls it..
Dr Yusuf Merchant says happiness is a ‘process’ and cannot be ‘conditional’. He talks of ‘values’ like faith, gratitude, commitment, punctuality, forgiveness, love, compassion and many more with real life examples which emphasize how the journey of life is a learning process because as he says ‘values change’ as we grow...
Definitely not preachy, the book is largely autobiographical and partly real life anecdotes of situations and lives through which ‘doc’ seems to have grown on his journey motivating us to grow on ours towards a state of absolute ‘happyness’
I recommend this book to everyone who is /or has felt unhappy at any point in life. It’s a simple yet powerfully written book where the author has shared his life journey. From being a spoiled brat who didn’t care about anyone or anything but himself to the man he is now. How his perspective changed over a period of time, the hardships that forged him. I go through shit everyday sometimes dealing with them efficiently and at times not so well. The small chapters in this book keeps reminding me that there is a better way to deal with the same problems. These small life lessons make a big impact on how I view the events happening in my life. And I know a lot of friends going through the same problems not knowing how to deal with these negative events happening in our lives. I’ve gifted this book to the ppl I think would benefit from this book and will keep doing so. This is definitely a top shelf book.
According to the law of requisite variety, only variety can overcome variety. Stated differently, variation generates wisdom. Drawing on a wide range of experiences he has had, "Doc" weaves together a bricolage of wisdom, and the emergent outcome is a conversation that one might be having with ones self. Thoroughly enjoyable, it is a remarkably quick read. But like good conversations, it lingers on, leading to reflection. It is insightful and without being preachy it prods questions, indeed fundamental ones- and the answer isnt 42! Though it can be, if that is what you want!!
This is not a self-help book (as Carlin said, if you have the motivation to wander down the self-help aisle, then you dont need it). Rather, it is a book for everyone. Or anyone who has ever wondered why life has not quite turned out the way you wanted it to be.
The book is beyond words. The thrills of reading all 272 pages actually 279 including contents, foreword, a note on the illustrations :). The curiosity of how to overcome breakdowns to the route to attain a complete state of " Happy Ness " was a wonderful experience. Every page as I mentioned above has a deep meaning to itself. Point learnt is to keep going and forgive and forget the past. Also, how important it is to change our life patterns. It's only "I" who needs to change and bring Happy Ness within and surroundings with change. A book full of life facts.we can choose to be happy and not suffer because of the behaviour of others. I can only change my behaviour and responses. Throw Happy Ness in the universe and you will get Happy Ness. A big thank you to Dr Yusuf Merchant to give me my set of Happy Ness.
'Doc' Yusuf Merchant has wonderfully summarized essential learning from his own life and the experiences with people addicted to drugs, alcohol and those suffering from depression. This book can surely be a perspective changer for most of the people if they ponder upon what Doc has to say and not just merely read it like a story. The book is filled with personal anecdotes from Doc's life which helps to connect better with him. The Doc has tried to reach out more people through this book and definitely many people will find it beneficial, as not all can get access to his finite personal time and resources. If I have to choose just one learning from the book, it will be: Celebrate positive actions not just positive thoughts as only thoughts mostly lead to inaction. On top of this, the book is interspersed with imaginative art work by Kriti Monga. The book is definitely worth a read.
In his book, Dr.Yusuf Merchant gives us glimpses of all that he went through in his life...his good days, his bad days, the lessons he learnt from his mother, his father, his patients, his judgements, his decisions, and his experiences. All these are so well put together in the book giving us the much needed life lessons. The way he brings together psychiatry and everyday life incidences is what I love the most about this book. This book lengthened my list of reasons to be grateful, ways to be happy, reasons to aspire to be a better person at what I do and above all, taught me ways to deal with heartbreak and disappointments.
Very many ppl think that they can never be happy. Dr yusuf merchants book on happiness makes you understand that happiness or contentment depends on you. No amount of money or fancy cars or sex can make you happy permanently. I like the definition that happiness is a choice. I can understand but cannot feel. I'll keep chewing on this. I know it's true but I can't do it. I'll keep trying cause I know that the author has done it. He is no superman. Even I am going by to make it simple for me to be happy
I was going to buy the e book but ended up getting the hardbound one after seeing a review. it's definitely worth it. The book itself is very good quality with lot of thought being put into the quality of the paper and binding, you can see the effort from cover itself. There is so much in detail in everything, even the chapters that seem simple, have a much deeper meaning to it. You have to read some of them twice to get the actual insight and meaning behind words.
A perfect blend of wit , humour, emotion and psychology topped with a lovely writing style . Great book.
This may be the most important book you purchase , so have no second thoughts . It is well worth your time . It addresses questions that all of us keep to ourself ,for fear of opening a can of worms. It is a very important book to be written . Thanks to Dr Merchant for this honest peek into his life.
A memoir that breaks many myths surrounding life, happiness and perspectives of living. It's a memoir that helps us to realize the impact of value system in creating a meaningful life.....now I know why Dr Yusuf said, Happiness is there and always be there with us.. it travels with us...we simply need to appreciate it!!!!
An amazing book which takes a different route from the "gyaan" filled books nowadays. Yusuf Merchant with a mix of anecdotes and introspection, shares his rich knowledge and makes you think. While this book isn't the magic pill which will help you bubble with happiness, it does teach you a number of techniques fortified by different anecdotes which are sure to get you started on your journey. :)
A book so gripping that it can be read in one sitting. One finds it difficult to keep it down. And yet a book which one re-reads again and again, slowly the second time, imbibing each chapter as it flows, and then to refer to the chapters to draw on solutions as life throws up situations. The narration beautifully told through real life stories which stick with you. A life lived, a life transformed, a life shared, a life which sets an example. An example of perfect integrity where there is no gap between, thoughts words and action. And it is this which makes the life lessons so effective. The book begins by freeing the mind from set patterns and notions by reminding us that 'Everything is Perfect' and then proceeds by putting the consoles in our hands by making us realize that Happiness is our choice- it is for us to choose to be happy. By declaring Happiness to be a by-product of a good value system the journey shifts inwards. We are reminded that "All living beings have a material part (body) and a non-material part ( life force or soul). The material part needs material nourishment while the non-material part needs spiritual succor." So clearly non material needs like happiness can be fulfilled by that which nurtures the soul, as the author puts it, "Any positive action that doesn't generate a palpable reward feeds the soul.". We are reminded that when one lives with an attitude of gratitude we draw from the Universe things we feel grateful for. So our journey proceeds to connecting ourselves to the source of Happiness- the ever new joy, ever existent, all pervading, ever conscious and ever aware. The book leaves us feeling connected to our source and fulfilled completely with all sense of lack disappearing.

It tells lot of details about how our brains function and how we can change our perspective towards different people and things. Overall a good read, a knowledgeable one!
Happyness is my best read of 2018! A book about the aching honesty of love, gratitude, failure, success, highs and lows, and the way they weave together to make life beautiful in all its forms. Dr. Yusuf Merchant’s indomitable spirit is admirable. Through the book, Doc celebrates his life lessons which have been illustrated by the distinctly joyous artwork of Kriti Monga. The book is powerful, poignant and all encompassing. Give it a read if you haven’t already!
