FINAL DECISION:  I completely satisfying book that I approached with trepidation.  I love, love, love the book about Jack's father and I feared that this book wouldn't live up to my expectations.  Instead, this book went in a different direction than I expected, but I loved these characters and their adventurous romance.

THE STORY:  Jacqueline Malory is the darling daughter of James Malory.  When Jack returns from escaping her kidnapper, James and his family are determined to take care of their enemy and sail for the West Indies to confront an old enemy.  Jack is angry that her father has left her in London while he confronts the man that kidnapped her. When a mysterious man approaches her at a masquerade ball, she is intrigued but realizes that he might actually be her kidnapper.  Instead of capturing him, Jack once again ends up in his clutches at sea.  But this time, things are different between them.

OPINION:  This is a book that I approached with trepidation.  GENTLE ROGUE (the story of Jack's parents) is my all time favorite romance book.  Whenever an author extends the story of characters there is always the possibility of a letdown.  My concerns: Will Jack's book be as compelling as her parents? How will the characters of James and George be presented? Will this book diminish my enjoyment of the original?  I'm glad to report that I was completely satisfied by this book.  As good as James and George's book? No, but this book is filled with adventure and strong active characters -- including Jack who seizes her own destiny.

Johanna has been writing for a long time (and I've been reading her for most of that time!).  Her books began in the time of bodice rippers and I found this book to be an interesting flip of many of those books.  Scenario:  heroine kidnapped and taken on the high seas as part of revenge against her father, hero is attracted to her and she is reluctantly attracted to him. The book also contains threats of rape, adventure and exotic locations.  In a prior book, the heroine would be a woman to which the action happens.  But those heroines of the past are not Jack Malory.

Jack is a woman who takes the reigns of her sexuality. She is determined, and takes all the autonomy that her brother does.  While she has a different sensibility, she refuses to be shamed or deterred by her male family members.  Ultimately, she navigates respect and care for her father and brother with her own self-determination. I really liked her own sense of self and her active nature.  Even as the times and protective nature of her male relatives dictate that she should be submissive, she (and the women of her family) are strong and independent.

Lindsey knows these characters so well and it was a joy to get an update on Malory family which contains a very colorful collection of characters that has engaged me since I was a teenager.  These characters are larger than life. While the story doesn't have emphasis on historical accuracy and detail, I have always enjoyed how Lindsey places her iconic characters in the tapestry of history without becoming overly engaged in that history.  (There are other authors who are masters of weaving their characters into time, but that is clearly not Lindsey's goal).

The hero Damon is an interesting contrast to Jack.  He has murky motivations but as things become clearer, I loved him more -- and so did Jack!  I thought he was an interesting match for Jack. Sweeter in many ways -- although he is definitely not a beta hero.  I love these shipboard romances and this one has some twists that kept me reading quickly to find out how things were resolved.

I loved this book and think that anyone who follows the Malory series will be especially pleased with this entry.  Probably my third or fourth favorite in the series overall...which says a lot considering how much I love this series.

WORTH MENTIONING:  This book brings up characters that are candidates for future books in the series.  One can hope!

CONNECTED BOOKS:  BEAUTIFUL TEMPEST is the twelfth book in the Malory Family series.  The book is a standalone, but is connected with its immediate predecessor STORMY PERSUASION and, of course, the heroine Jack is the daughter of James Malory from GENTLE ROGUE.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 5 stars. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

This book started out so great (the first 40% of the book was amazing), but Jacqueline (Jack) kinda ruined this book for me. She was annoying most of the book, she was very spoiled. What I did like about her was that she took what she wanted, she was a very strong and determined person. I really liked Damon though, he was sexy, and had the patience of a saint to put up with Jack when she was acting up. Also I feel there was more lust than love between them.

What I did love about this book was the intrigue and adventure. I love a good pirate/sailor book and this one was very entertaining in that aspect.

Overall it was a good read and I did enjoy it, but it's not my favorite Mallory book that's for sure.

"Beautiful Tempest" is the story of Jack and Damon.
Jack is the daughter of James and George. Ever since her kidnapping by the "Bastard" (in the previous book) she seethes and refuses to get married this season, even if her best friend and cousin Judith did!
A masquerade however, leads her to a mysterious suitor- following whom she, her brother Jeremy and cousin Percy get kidnapped..by none other than Bastard aka Damon.
I can summarize this book in two words: long and boring. In the past few books, Ive felt a hangover of "Gentle Rogue", and this book suffered from it greatly. The couple barely spent any time together- even their first sex scene was skipped- and most of the time was spent reliving the past or with other characters of the book. The whole kidnapped by the pirate thing was overdone, but at the same time not done properly?? The ending was rushed.
Needless to say, extremely disappointed in this one.

This is this authors most boring book she's ever written the h was annoying and I don't get why anyone would want to spend time with her. I've read lots of the Malory series and didn't need a recap of all of them in this book it was to focused on past characters and story lines without really building these one dimensional main characters. The sexy times was basically nonexistent and so boring 😑

I've been reading the Malory family series for years.

This book is the biggest disappointment EVER.

Everything was rushed. EVERYTHING. There was either too much detail, or not enough where it mattered.

Jack was a little too aggressive, IMO.

I'm just so bummed that it didn't live up to expectations.

Not enough romance

I'm giving this 2.5 stars. The first half of the book was spent recapping previous Malory books that there was hardly any time or space to develop the romance between Damon and Jack. There were far too many characters, excessive recounting of past events, and explanations of actions. Too much telling, not enough showing. There were also many punctuation errors, especially the lack of comma before the beginning of a quotation/dialogue.

I have to think hard about what I liked in this book and I'm blanking. I guess I can say I liked that it's fast-paced and I was able to finish it in one sitting. Another positive is that Jack knew her own mind and was not a shy, little virgin who was suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. I also liked that there was no forced seduction and when they came together it was by mutual consent.

I didn't like that Jack was TSTL many times and Damon was too weak. I loved James Malory, but he must be in his 50s already by this book and shouldn't still be the strongest man in the world. I hardly smiled while I was reading the book and the love scenes were not sexy. The plot was convoluted and the villains were cartoon characters.

The Malory series is the only Johanna Lindsey work that I still follow, but they're getting tiresome. I think she should end it already before fans of the books start hating her. As it is, I'm happy I was able to borrow this from my library for no way in hell I'm going to shell out $$ for this book.

Beautiful Tempest is the most recent addition to the Malory Anderson Family series and even though this book was far from perfect it was still a fun blast that made me realize why I love this family so much. Beautiful Tempest features Jack who is Georgie and James only daughter. Now I will say that I HIGHLY recommend that you read Stormy Persuasion before reading this one, because events that happen in that book coincide with this one.

Our story begins with the Malory's and a wedding of Anthony's daughter (our couple in Stormy Persuasion) and we see the great bonds and closeness this family has especially the friendship between Judy and Jack. I love these gals together, But now that Judy is married, Jack is determined to have fun for her season and forget about being kidnapped by the pirate the "Bastard" as she refers to him. She wants her revenge and is miffed that her father won't let her go along with him on his journey to find him. But then at a ball, she finds herself dancing with a stranger who is mysterious and makes her laugh and for the first time, she is intrigued by a man. There is something familiar about him. When he invites her to meet him at the park, she agrees but he then never arrives but delivers a note to her with a rose. And she realizes in his note, she knows why she finds him familiar...he is the pirate that kidnapped her and so she and her brother Jeremy hatch a plan to kidnap him but their plan goes wrong when Jack finds herself being kidnapped AGAIN and boy is she furious especially after seeing the beating her brother gets trying to protect her.

At first Jack expects Damon to try to force himself on her but he never touches her. In fact he is quite careful with her despite her attempts to kill him or escape. But with her brother and his friend Percy being held captive, she has low options especially when it appears that not everything is as it seems. She soon realizes that Damon is her protector and that there are good pirates and bad pirates. And Jack has to face up to her true feelings for Damon and that not all of them are hateful, and that she has a powerful attraction towards Damon. And when Jack learns the truth about Damon and his intentions, even though its a crazy plan, she begins to soften towards him and begins her own seduction, because Damon is the man that she wants and she will fight for them no matter what...

Our hero has a complex past and he has been forced to appear to be working with a evil pirate in order to get his father released from prison. But he is put in a bind, and he will need Jack and her father's help in order to get his father released. But he holds some powerful feelings for Jack's father because this is not the first time he has known the man, and soon the past and present will collide and Damon will have to face his demons from the past in order to have a future with Jack.

This wasn't my favorite book from Lindsey or from this series, I will admit that the writing felt a bit off at times. There was quite a bit of angst in the beginning, that throws the reader off but you do need to keep with the story if you want to like it in the end because it does get better the more you read. But I knew that Lindsey wouldn't disappoint and she didn't. I have ADORED this family for years, so it was fun having Jack's story. But Jack is a bit of a drama queen at times but what do you expect from a eighteen year old right? I mean she has just had her come out and having her first season. So I was a little more forgiving of Jack because she is trying to recover from being kidnapped (although you see that there is more to it than that, we see that she is fighting the feelings she felt from her captor and would rather feel angry instead of infatuated and attracted). But Jack has many redeemable qualities. What I really liked about her, is one she is her parents daughter in that she goes after what she wants. She is bold and daring and isn't apologetic about her desires or wants in life.
Okay, so I'm a hoyden. But I know love can make people do stupid things and ignore what's sensible. I don't intend to let that happen to me because love won't matter a'tall if a man isn't a good lover ,isn't fun in and out of bed, ends up being a prude who wants to make love with his clothes on. The bedroom is a big part of marriage, and I refuse to get stuck with only half of the good part.

And when she realizes that she wants Damon, she goes after him LITERALLY. I mean she seduces him her first time having sex with him and yeah I kinda loved that and boy does he take the surprise of it pretty well.
I'm Jack Malory, too bold for subtlety," She kissed him, hotly.

"Are you sure, because I'm two seconds from--"

"Shut up, pirate. I'm taking what I want."

Then we get into some heavy family drama, so if you love this family, you will get a kicker out of it. And first I will say that I really liked seeing the complexity between James and Damon because they do a past that is packed with misunderstandings. So it was interesting seeing them work that out especially when Damon takes two beatings from James for what he did to Jack. And then we get a few surprises in the end that bowled me over and ones I didn't see coming. And yeah this book had me laughing upside down and sideways. Its what I adore about this series, its just plain good ole' fun!! You don't take them seriously, they just give you some laughs and you get such fun times with the Malory-Anderson Family.
I did run, in the only direction possible. I'll always run straight to Jack. She holds my heart.

I wasn't expecting too many feels from this book, because even though I laughed quite a bit, this series and this author doesn't display too many feels in her books. You have some heart felt moments between Damon and Jack, but they are flowery in any way, its very practical. But seeing them fight for each other was BRILLIANT and the ending just left me with a smile!! Even though this wasn't my favorite from Lindsey, it was still a good addition and I can't wait to see who is next in the family to have their story told!!

Jacqueline Malory is the only daughter of James Malory. If you’ve ever read any of the books in this series you know that any man who wants to marry her better be able to duck.
This is a cute historical romance with pirates and the feistiest woman since Georgiana impersonated a cabin boy on James’ ship. (That was one of my favorite books by Johanna Lindsey)
If you like historical romances don’t skip this author. 😘

The Malory series is how I discovered Johanna Lindsey. She was one of the first authors I read where the women were as essential to the action as their male counterparts. At the time, there were not many historical romances with heroines who would risk walking into danger and rescuing themselves. Ms. Lindsey broke ground in that aspect. To this day there are less damsels in distress and more fearless lionesses. Beautiful Tempest keeps that legacy going with a suspenseful, adventurous tale of danger, family and romance. It felt like catching up with friends. Now a little bit older and a whole lot wiser, I'm as in love with those rowdy Malorys and feuding Andersons as the day I met them.

I started out loving this book. Especially when compared to its predecessor, Stormy Persuasion, Beautiful Tempest just had so much going for it. The heroine, Jack, is interesting, passionate, capable and likable, and she had a built-in conflict with the hero, Damon, from the kidnapping in the previous book. So when he kidnapped her again in this story, the stage was set for some steamy fireworks.

And in the beginning, that’s exactly what we got. Jack lived up to all my expectations by fighting valiantly against her captors, delivering punches, black eyes and even a stab wound at one point. And she kept her wits about her in terms of what she said too. Doing everything she could to minimize the pirates’ advantage by pretending her brother Jeremy (also a captive) was just some penniless lord she’d hired.

Meanwhile, Damon was making it clear he wanted Jack as more than just a pawn in the pirates’ quest to get her father, but never even came close to forced seduction. It was very obvious that he was smitten with her for exactly who she was. Every unconventional, fire-breathing, shamelessly bold inch of her. He never did anything despicable or to try to break her spirit. He treated her with respect the whole time.

And as bizarre as these words sound coming out of my mouth, that was kind of the problem.

There just wasn’t enough in the way of fireworks between our hero and heroine. Jack was suitably feisty, but Damon was so calm and accommodating the whole time that it came across as bland. With him it was all calm, logical talk and apologies for the slightest inconvenience. He went out of his way make Jack comfortable in all ways and even gave her small treats as an apology any time she became even slightly miffed. It made him into a beta hero instead of the alpha a strong woman like Jack needed for a partner.

And the longer the book went on, the more boring it got. Because Damon was being so reasonable, Jack's outbursts started to see gratuitous and petty. And beyond those outbursts, very little was going on. Jack mostly sat in the cabin all day being bored and then Damon would come in and be all calm and agreeable and they'd go to bed - separately. Occasionally JL would throw in a line about Jack finding Damon attractive or him occasionally stealing a kiss, but neither one of them really seemed all that bothered. Which is why it was such a shock when they finally did sleep together.

So, all in all, I started out loving this book but that good will just petered away as time went on. The romance wasn’t spicy enough to keep my interest, and the plot didn’t live up to its potential. The final showdown with Catherine was a joke and the battle with LaCross was very anticlimactic. And once I lost interest in the romance and the story, JL’s personal quirks started really grating on my nerves. If I’d taken a shot every time she said someone “snorted” in response to some dialogue I’d be dead right now. And all her wacky, out of place contractions are just as irritating as ever. As were her info dump “as you know” conversations between characters reminding each other of their shared history just so the readers could be reminded of all the previous books. Really disappointing overall. Although I did like the resolution to Damon's story with his mother.

I really wanted to like this book, but it simply never came together for me. Too much doing the back-story thing - yeah, that's good for new Malory readers but it's still a waste of page space, it's simply filler material. If you want to know what happened prior to a book, start at the beginning of he series - it's that simple. I love the early Malory books, they've been keepers and must-be re-reads through the years. But when does a series END? Will we be following Jack's and Judith's children into the Victorian era? C'mon. End the series already. Start a new one, please. And the 'big reveals' at the end were gratuitous. I enjoyed the "Judith" book a lot (4 stars), I couldn't finish Lindsey's most recent Western duo, simply awful, and BEAUTIFUL TEMPEST has simply reinforced my decision to stick with the early Malory books when the girls' fathers of today were the hunks and horny heroes that we knew and loved back then. Gad, I really, really wanted to like this book. Took me 6 days to slog through it, something that never happened with GENTLE ROGUE, or TENDER REBEL, and all those other wonderful Malory starter books.

the only thing that would have made this book better is if it was much longer.

Now it follows the familiar pattern of all the james malory books,

but i don't much care because i love this family so much.

if only the same love would have gone in to the cynster books that stephanie laurens just wrote, i'd be so much happier........

i wish there were more malory books and i wish johanna would write much much faster

these books are always so much fun to read, and james is my favorite and hells bells jeremy too.

kidnapping etc all been there done that, but i just don't care, like i said, love the malorys
yep, a couple of more chapters would have been great......... and more interaction between james and jack and the rest

you know what we need another christmas story from johanna,

can't help it love those malory's, and if you are going to read these, make sure you read them in order..............

3 stars.

I felt sad after reading the last line. Well, not sad sad, more like an unfulfilled sadness. Does that even make sense? 😳 I was so looking forward to this book. I was borderline obsessed with July 11th because I couldn't wait to read Jack's story and finally finally catch up with some of the other Malorys. Sad. Judith's book did not leave me with any lasting emotions, just a big fat bleh. Now, that I'm thinking about the two latest books side by side, I realise how bleh they both are. They might as well have been in the same book and save me the wait.

I expected more from Jack's story. More action, more wit, just more. Instead, I got a simple plot with simple action that by the time the last chapter came around I just read the words with little attention and hoped (yet not hoping) the last word is on the next page. If I didn't know better, I would've thought this was just a perfectly edited first draft. No depth, no deep emotions (except the rage of course...gad the anger!), and especially not that much depth into the characters. I hope the next one will be a family book like The Present so we could catch up with all the old Malorys. Because honestly, the only reason I stayed hoping after Judy's book, and kept reading Jack's book was because I was curious about how James's and Anthony's children will be. And after this one, I'd say not half as interesting as their parents.

I'm thinking it's time to leave the Malorys be, for a few decades. Heartbreaking. But at this rate with no new and exciting people or anymore scandals (hello! lol) I'd rather leave with the high note of the last good Malory books. Unless of course something good and unexpected will be in the next book. I'm loyal, what can I say hahahahaha

Give this a read anyway, friends. Happy Ending, with a few droll comments guaranteed 😄

I had high hopes for this one as I do like this author. However, I just couldn't really get into the characters. There was a good - and highly complicated - plot, but I just didn't get any chemistry with the main characters.

Utterly charming! Only a few issues I blow out of proportion

Jacqueline “Jack” Malory has been obsessed with getting revenge on the man who stole her away from her family two months ago with the objective of luring her father to his death. She can’t believe her luck when he shows up in London and tries to bait her to come to him again. She goes—she can’t resist going—but she goes prepared, armed to the tooth and escorted by her older brother Jeremy and several guards. But it’s not enough; her captor surrounds them with an army of pirates, and once again she’s taken prisoner. Except, something’s different this time…and as she butts heads with a man who infuriates her all the more because she finds him the most attractive she’s ever met, she’s determined to discover the rules and level their playing field—so that she can kill him.
______

I loved this book! I loved the last few Lindseys as well, and I’m actually quite surprised I’m not more obsessed with her work. But there were a few things that gave me misgivings, though they’re quite minor and entirely subjective.

First - so many characters. But what else can you expect from the twelfth book in a series about a gigantic family that’s been written across twenty years? Lindsey must have been aware of it, because for the most part she didn’t give time to any Malorys who didn’t serve a purpose. But still, I’m familiar with this series, and I still had a hard time keeping track of who’s who and remembering everyone’s backstory. Eventually I gave up and focused on the key players. It’s impossible to ignore the fact that this is only a tiny portion of a much larger story. It’s a little frustrating, but again—I didn’t expect it not to be.

Second - I was confused about Damon’s motivations, mostly regarding his personal feelings for Jack. It was obvious from the start that he didn’t in any way wish her ill, and seriously regretted that he had to use her to achieve his own goals. He treated her with as much generosity and compassion as he could, so I never doubted that he respected her, and he really wanted her to truly trust him. But I got a strong vibe that he was in love with her from the get-go, and that he was aware of it, to the point that I thought part of the reason he’d stolen her away again was because he’d missed her and wanted an opportunity to win her over. I waited and waited for the revelation, but it never came, and I realized he hadn’t taken her because he loved her. He’d just…really liked her, I guess. I’m not sure; I got major mixed messages from him.

Third - Jack’s taking Damon to bed the very moment she “allowed” herself to. It seemed rather abrupt and threw me. I knew she’d been attracted to him, which had grown into desire, and that she’d been resisting fond feelings for him, but still, as soon as they’d agreed to be allies, a red light had switched to green in her mind and she’d thrown herself at him. I would have thought she’d have a little more dignity, at least. At most, I expected a little hesitation, because it had to be strange to know you’re about to take to bed a man you’d sworn to kill—and enjoy killing. I also expected a moment of hesitation from her because she was a virgin! I don’t care how brazen and bold and forward a woman is, or how willing she is—that first time is scary.

But to read it, I’d have never known for sure she was a virgin if she hadn’t mentioned blood on the sheets. She sure hadn’t acted like it. She’d acted like she knew what she was doing. It was jarring—and I was a little disappointed in her. I was also a little disappointed that Damon didn’t prove to be as chivalrous and gentlemanly as I’d come to believe. I thought he’d respect her enough to resist her for her own good, that he’d NOT want to ruin her, whether he loved her or not. But he didn’t put up a fight at all. And once that light was green, it stayed bright green, and Jack was spinning her wheels trying to jump him. In my opinion, she crossed the line between brazen and whorish, to be completely honest. I mean, this was the 1800’s right? Propriety was still a colossal deal? I know she wanted to be a rake like her father, but she knew she couldn’t, that there was a double standard between men and women regarding casual sex. So I thought that…that she’d have more self-respect, I guess. I don’t know. I was just overall disappointed that they had sex when and how they did.

Fourth - speaking of being a rake—I got REALLY sick of every man who opened his mouth—except Percy and Damon… Okay, let me rephrase. I got REALLY sick of every Malory man gloating about having been a rakehell. Like it was a badge of honor earned for being so goddamn masculine that they felt they were entitled to screw every woman on the planet. It was disgusting (literally—all I could think about were the diseases they must have! Their poor wives!). I know it’s kind of what men do, or at least what we expect from men—something about them being biologically programmed to procreate as often as possible—but that doesn’t mean I like it, find it acceptable, or least of all, find it a sexy characteristic. And I can’t believe their wives do, either. I think we’re evolved enough, civilized enough, that we can give men a little credit, give them the benefit of the doubt by expecting them to have some self-respect and self-restraint. Lindsey made them sound like animals who rutted every chance they got, and we should immediately fawn over them upon learning of their prowess. Damon wasn’t a rake, or he didn’t make mention of it, anyway, and I think that’s why I was so disappointed when he didn’t try to do the “right thing” and resist Jack’s advances. I wanted him to be different than the Malorys.

Okay, I’m sorry, I’ll stop ranting like an SJW.

I know it sounds like I hated the book at this point, but I really did love it—the rant above was me blowing minor issues out of proportion. The characters were charming, endearing, and sympathetic (though I honestly didn’t warm much toward the Malory men because of the rake thing). The plot was intriguing and held me captive. The subplots kept the tension high. I was reading late into the night, and when I started to nod off, I got mad at myself because I wanted to keep reading! Lindsey’s writing was excellent, keeping the story moving along. She didn’t describe things in much detail, but that was okay with me, because paragraphs and paragraphs of description usually take me out of the story and make me space off. Overall, I can’t wait for next summer and the next Lindsey novel. I’m seriously considering tracking down as many audiobooks as I can get my hands on…

As much as I love the Malory family and would love to be a part of that family, I can only give this book 3 STARS.

I was really looking forward to this story as it was Jack Malory's. But, it just didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, but I just didn't love it like the other Malory books.
For Jack being James' daughter, I was hoping for more from her. I didn't want her to be the damsel in distress. She wasn't the usual damsel in distress, but the whole kidnapping thing just didn't go well. She's James' daughter and I actually expected more from her. I was hoping for more physical fights from her. I mean, James did teach her how to fight and we didn't really get to see that from her. She definitely had James' mentality as wanting to be a rake though.

I felt sorry for Damon at times because he really got a crappy life full of lies and secrets. We also find out why he despises James so much. It was interesting how everything turned out for him though.

I thought that the ending was rushed and didn't have any exciting appeal to it. I was waiting for an epic battle between James and his sworn enemy.

Spoiler ahead in the next couple sentences....
Also, the ending was a bit over the top with Jack and Damon. I wish they didn't have to elope and I wish that James would have accepted Damon because Jack was happy and in love with him. I just didn't get that vibe at all. I get that it's James Malory, but seriously, he could have accepted it a bit better.

Damon's friend, Mortimer was in the book a lot. It looks like Mortimer might be a candidate in a future Malory book, maybe for Jaime Malory?? HHMMM

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Reseña completa

3,5 estrellas.

Terrific book. I am heartbroken at the knowledge there will be no more Malory books (RIP Johanna Lindsey). They are always full of emotion, fun, heat, and the importance of family. This book is the follow-on to Stormy Persuasion, in which Jack was kidnapped as part of a revenge plot. She escaped unharmed and now harbors an intense desire to get revenge of her own on the man who captured her.

As this book opens, James Malory prepares to set off with his fleet to settle the score with the old nemesis who was behind Jack's kidnapping. In typical Malory fashion, he looks forward to the confrontation. What he doesn't enjoy is being pestered by Jack, who feels it's also her right to go along and doesn't take well to being told no. An intriguing masked stranger gives Jack something else to concentrate on until she figures out why he fascinates her. Convinced he is the man she dubbed "Bastard," she and Jeremy and their friend Derek plot to capture him and bring him to justice. Their plans go awry when he captures them instead, and they find themselves headed back to the Caribbean.

This was a fast start to the book, and the pace didn't change much throughout the story. I loved the encounter between Jack and the masked man at the ball. The sparks between them were undeniable, and I was surprised that Jack didn't immediately suspect who he was. But then again, her anger over the whole kidnapping was just as intense as it had been, and likely overwhelmed the attraction. I loved what it was that gave it away and wasn't surprised that she threw herself into revenge mode. I was glad that she was smart enough to enlist Jeremy and Derek to help her. I was unsurprised that he was prepared for them, though that didn't lessen the intensity of the scene at the docks. Jack's fury is just as hot this time, and she doesn't give in easily. She certainly gets "Bastard's" attention with her impromptu swim, even though it didn't last long. She quickly realizes that she is stuck on board until they reach the islands and plans accordingly.

"Bastard," aka Damon Ross, has no intention of bringing any harm to Jack. She is a pawn in an elaborate game. Damon was forced into this kidnapping, but also uses it for his own ends. He has a score to settle with Jack's father and is willing to use her to make it happen. The problem is that she still fascinates and captivates him.

I loved watching their relationship develop. Jack is angry and delights in trying to push Damon's buttons. It's frustrating for her when she only gets amusement in return. Meanwhile, Damon's fascination with Jack continues to grow. He is also fairly blatant about his attraction to her and uses that to his advantage. It was fun to see Jack's attitude undergo a slow change as she began to realize that there were things that didn't add up. Though she calls him a pirate, he doesn't behave like one. He's let slip a few things that lead her to believe that there is more to her kidnapping than she knows. It isn't long before Jack's fascination with Damon matches his for her.

However, the growing feelings between Damon and Jack aren't all that is going on. The tensions on the ship are high because the crew is split between Damon's men and actual pirates. They were forced on him by the man behind Jack's kidnapping. There are quite a few intense scenes where Damon is all that stands between the pirates and Jack. As they draw closer to the islands, Damon finally reveals the truth to Jack, Jeremy, and Derek, as they seek a way to move the odds in their favor. And let's not forget James Malory, who is not happy (to put it mildly) to find out about Jack's abduction. The initial meeting between James and Damon was everything I expected and more. There are some exciting twists and turns as James and Damon have to work together to bring down their common enemy. That still doesn't help Damon get his heart's desire, as James whisks Jack back to England.

Damon isn't about to give up and follows as quickly as he can. The obstacles remain; however, the biggest being Jack's father. While hoping to let time soften the resistance (hah!), Damon visits his grandmother's home, where he receives one shock after another. In the meantime, Jack's mother plans another ball, which Jack requests to be a masquerade. I loved the feeling of closing a circle. There were some hilarious moments at the ball, as both Georgina and James get their licks in, but it's Jack who wins the day. I loved the ending as she and Damon get what they want. I also loved the last line, which went to James, "Where do they keep the bloody brandy here?"

Espectacular!
