The five hundred year-old Sorian Commonwealth is in its darkest hour. Surrounded on all sides by their enemies, its people have become so desperate they have turned to Tharsis, the ancient pagan god of war, for salvation. Tharsis has not answered their desperate prayers. Yet, the Commonwealth is about to receive a chance - just a chance, and nothing more - to change its fate, but this chance doesn’t start with any god of war. It doesn’t start with a battle, or a treaty, or even a miracle.
Basic fantasy sort of story with interesting twists
All the usual fantasy items: an unassuming rube who is the hero, a kind and sweet woman of wealth or privilege of some sort, who will be or is elevated to a high position, an evil man ugly from the inside out and his evil nephew who has a handsome exterior, a plot involving embezzlement, favors from foreign lands, general backstabbing, a mysterious man who comes and goes at will, a strange and beautiful jewel found by the young man and given to the young woman, various reluctant heroes, a non-military type who is a military genius and gets a perfext score on the test to be made an officer, a genius with an unrecognized geniuus assistant, a terrible disease that may or may not have a cure, a little boy that is a hostage, 2 unusual brothers, a strange pseudo-military group, a couple folks who shouldn't be alive, epic battles, and a very shaggy dog. You'll have to read it to see how the bits fit together.
I received this book from Library thing for a review. This is quite a long book with 74 chapters and over 500 pages which is great as the author does not skimp on the story. The plot details and development of the characters is very good. I found myself needing to read the next chapter to see what happens next. This follows two key characters Everette Vale, a seemingly simple boy in a small village and Fey Noviana, a beautiful young lady also from a simple village on her way to the capital for an arranged marriage to a wealthy family. But these two meet and instantly have an attraction to each other. Their lives are to be anything but simple from that time forward. Intrigue, betrayal, corruption, power hungry leaders, the history and interaction of many different peoples and cultures all make for a very good story that is hard to put down. A must read.
I'm a little torn about this one. On one hand the plot was well developed and the characters were interesting. The preindustrial world was pretty cool too. There was a lot of humor in the writing which made it lots of fun to read. However, I did feel confused by the tone of the book. The writing is really simple and feels like it's intended for YA audiences, but the themes got pretty dark. A lot of arguably terrible things happened. It was honestly hard to tell if this book was meant for YA audiences or not, honestly. I did also feel that the writing lacked nuance and feeling, so reading it sometimes felt...stale, I guess?
Still, I enjoyed reading this book and found myself invested in the characters, so it's worth checking out if you like YA action fantasy.
I was reminded a bit of The Princess Bride while reading this very entertaining book. It's not perfect - there were several threads left dangling for another story. But there was romance and battles and a cast of well-developed characters.
Sucked me in and held me hostage until i read the last word. Then offered mercy by spitting me out into the cold unforgiving world of reality. Loved it.
