IDENTITY Shaping up as one of the 21st century’s more intractable crimes identity theft is the inspiration for this new novel.
An actual crime in the USA in 1997 which involved the fraud of over $US100 million from a group of insurance companies, sets the scene for an unusual case of identity theft involving a US swindler, a crooked US attorney, the FBI, an ordinary Australian citizen and a firm of Forensic Accountants.
The swindler is Larry Tycehurst and he endeavours to use the science of DNA and the crime of identity theft to reward himself with the funds looted from the insurance companies, whilst blaming others. He has a nephew living in Australia whom he has never met, this is Freddy Tycehurst, and he is unknowingly the beneficiary of his uncle’s will. Though this was not what Freddy’s uncle had intended, he had planned to assume Freddy’s identity and collect the inheritance himself!
Unfortunately ill health intervened and Larry Tycehurst died before he could carry out his plan to recover the money thus leaving the $100 million legally willed to Freddy Tycehurst in Sydney. The complication is that the money is in a bank in Panama and is also sought by the FBI and a crooked US attorney from Delaware who sees the inheritance as an opportunity to rip off the beneficiary, Freddy Tycehurst.
As he tries to determine what is actually going on Freddy works with a firm of Forensic Accountants in Sydney before he ventures to the USA to try to resolve the issue. But Freddy encounters circumstances which force him into confrontations with the FBI and the Delaware based attorney and ultimately action in Panama City, Panama where the money is located. While this is going on Freddy’s life is further complicated by the actions of an online criminal who has also stolen his identity.
