Mail Order Bride

Rate this book
Whoever heard of a mail-order bride in the 21st century? Julianne Dawson had mixed emotions driving across the country to marry the cowboy she remembered from summers at her uncle's ranch. Anxious to leave her former life behind, is she delusional in thinking that a rancher's wife would offer her the life she wants? Desperate actions needed to keep the family ranch. No one in their right mind sends off for a bride he's doesn't know—not in this day and age. Yet Blake Reynolds does exactly that. He'll do anything to keep the family ranch even marry a virtual stranger—as long as she can produce a child within the year. Can a marriage of convenience for both the bride and groom end in happiness for either, or is necessity the only driving force in this arrangement?

Good story just slow

Marriage of convenience where hero has to marry and have a child to inherit his ranch. Heroine met him as a teenager and finds his want ad and agreed to marry him and she comes out from New York. Really like her personality. This wasn't a passionate book by any means and that was okay for me. No crazy romance scenes that make you feel dirty at least. But it was good. The heroine is smart and pragmatic and the hero is a good man. There are doubts and lack of communication but they weather that storm. Sub story with his son and his baby's Mama and for awhile she was annoying but it ended up well too. Again nothing earth shattering but it's the type of story my Mom would love. Inside she was here so I could share it with her. 😢

Mail Order Bride took a step back in time and gave it a modern twist. How can something that seems as archaic as a Mail Order Bride end up becoming so much more? Barbara McMahon turns complicated into simple with a tale of risky choices and second chances that becomes a poignant story of love, life and hope. Blake and Julianne discover a blessing in disguise and so did I.

IT ALL STARTED WITH A CRAZY AD IN WESTERN RANCHERS

The story is a twenty-first-century mail-order bride tale that includes an emotional roller coaster ride and involves multiple people. It isn’t just a story of a man and woman who chose to marry from an ad placed in Western Ranchers magazine, but also other people that are affected. A bitter woman will give most of her fortune away to artist and groups, and leave the family ranch hanging in the balance with a codicil that will require her only grandson to marry and produce an heir before two years passes.

Blake Reynolds has worked hard trying to keep the rundown ranch running since the death of his bitter paternal grandmother, who died months after her only son. While she was a renown artist, she was bitter when it came to her own family, shunning her son for the woman he married, rejected her grandson, and then placing dire stipulations on him to be able to inherit the ranch that she has allowed to run down.

“Crazy reason for marriage—a necessary change of lifestyle and the discharge of a debt.” “If nothing else, this marriage should prove to be an interesting merger.”

Julianne Dawson never knew her father, was raised by a single mother who died when Julianne is turning nineteen and was in college. The only family she remembers is her Uncle in Texas at the Bar-XT ranch that she would visit for a few weeks in the summer. There was one ranch hand, Blake Reynolds, that she had a crush on. What a shock to learn he was seeking a mail-order bride, and she was answering the ad. Due to a health scare, warning she must change her lifestyle, and rejection from the man she had been involved with for several years, the ad is her new lifeline for happiness.

The plot will have Julianne driving to Wyoming after giving up the high-profile life she had in Manhatten with the intention of marrying Blake. At least they knew each other and weren’t total strangers. What a shock to arrive and see how run down the ranch actually was. Then to learn that he doesn’t have time to wait, he needs to marry and produce an heir, and he is on borrowed time.

The situation adds plenty of angst, a little bit of anger, not enough trust, and a pending deadline to produce an heir. While Blake has a son, even if he didn’t learn of him until the boy was a teenager, the will states “legitimate heir,” and he wasn’t married to Shell’s mother who is now deceased. Blake has trust issues with women, and it will affect the relationship between him and Julianne.

The story has a secondary story of Shell, and Loni, who dated and when she became pregnant, she blamed Shell and is bitter. Shell has asked her repeatedly to marry him, and she refuses because she is determined to leave Sweetwater, Wyoming, and head to a big city and become a famous painter. But what about the baby she is carrying?

Julianne feels like an outsider with the way that Blake and Shell treat her, they are bitter that she has answered Loni’s questions about New York, and there is so much tension in the household. Blake insisted on a prenup and refused to allow Julianne to help with any of the finances, even though she has her own money.

“I’m not trying to take away your home. I’m only trying to make it mine, too.”

What happens when someone from New York shows up and tries and to get Julianne to return with him? Blake is blasé about it all and encourages her to meet Steven for dinner, but that leads to a life and death situation. Will nearly losing the one thing he thought he wanted more than anything be the wake-up call to what is important? Will Loni give up her baby and Shell to pursue her dream to be a famous artist or will she learn that other things are more important?

This is a very old story with a new twist even though the met years ago when they were much young they know nothing about each other now. She wants children he needs to marry and have a child to keep his land. I am sure even in today’s times there still are convenience here in the US as much as far. The author takes you though the steps of meeting again, fear of the unknown, the attraction, the fall out on a ranch that looks like it has seen better days. When one is unsure it is hard to come clean and clear the air, which leaves to riffs and misunderstandings with two people that are so different from each other. The author gives you a story inside a story of young love and the turmoil it bring with it when one is a dreamer and pregnant.

This was a fun read with wonderful characters the author pulls you in with a modern day mail order bride as they overcome issues trying to build a life together. I was pulled in from the first page as Blake works out how to make his plans to find a bride, having done that now he has other issues on his mind. Will she go through with it or will he need to find a new bride. Time is running out…. Julianne has had a life’s scare it is time to put her past life behind her and try to make her dreams become reality. I really like the plot how it follow through with an easy flow that makes you become invested in the story and its characters. I loved it from start to finish with down to earth characters that keep you on your toes. There are some surprising twits that keeps it interesting along with some excitement that makes this a page turner.

Another great book by Barbara McMahon. Julianne Dawson is leaving New York City and her stressful life to go to Wyoming and marry Blake Reynolds. He had put an ad in a western magazine for a wife. Julianne remembered him from when she was a teenager and he worked on her uncle’s farm where she had a crush on him. She answered the ad, they talked, and decided she would move out to Wyoming.

Things were not smooth in this transition. Blake didn’t trust women. He didn’t find out he had a son who was half Indian until the boy was 15. Their relationship was tenuous at best. Julianne had a health problem that forced her to slow down and didn’t tell Blake about. Blakes’s son loved his girlfriend Loni who was pregnant with their baby, but wouldn’t marry Shell. Their was a lot of tension between those two. I was so glad to see how Julianne had such a positive attitude and tried to make a family out of their situation. I was happy to see how caring she was with Loni and Shell. Both Blake and Julianne were too stubborn for their own good. I loved that there was two love stories in this book. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.

This is a sweet contemporary western romance, with quite a bit of angst. It’s a story not only about two very opposite strangers joining forces each with their own goal, but also about families created out of necessity and in the end hoping to find happiness.
Julianne , a single woman living in NYC and working in an ad agency, has had a health scare and leaves that life when she answers an ad from a rancher seeking a wife. Blake, a cowboy to the core, needs a wife and an heir in order to inherit the family ranch.
Needless to say, the move has not been smooth. One is taciturn, the other one is filled with hope of a home and a new life. Secrets are kept and doubts make them wonder what the future holds for them.
Feelings not expressed , causes a riff . Will they ever get their HEA?
Add to this the sub-plot involving Blake’s son, Shell, and his ex-girlfriend Loni, and you have an entertaining book filled with complex characters.
A reminder that sometimes what we embrace in life and makes us happy, isn’t always what we wish for.
I was gifted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

A modern take on an old west tradition, Mail Order Bride is a delight. Julianne has decided to change her life & career. Her high stress life style has put her health at risk. For a joke, her friends gave her a ranching magazine with an ad in it for a bride. Imagine her surprise when she realized she knew the person that had placed it. It's been years but she had a crush on him when she was in her teens. Was this the way to change her life?

Blake is determined to fulfill the terms of his Grandmother's will. In order to inherit the ranch, he has to get married & produce a legitimate heir within a 2 year time frame. He's already wasted 1/2 of the time trying to find a way around it. He doesn't trust any woman. He's afraid they'll try to steal his ranch. Can he learn to trust Julianne?

This story really had two plot lines. Julianne & Blake are trying to find a way to develop a relationship between them. Julianne has left New York & is anxious to settle on the ranch. Loni & Shell had a relationship that Shell would like to continue but Loni is desperate to leave the ranch. I enjoyed their interactions & how they began to grow & form a family.

I love this Marriage of Convenience novel. Julianne drove across the country to marry a man that she hadn't seen since she was a teenager. Blake needed to marry and have a child to inherit the farm that had been in his family for 5 generations. Julianne's life changes radically from her stressful high powered life in NYC to a quiet life in Wyoming. Julianne and Blake start with attraction and memories of the past. They end up with friendship and love. There is a secondary romance with Blake's son, Shell and his pregnant ex-girlfriend Loni. I received a copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This book is richer for being mainly told from both Blake and Julianne's point of view. I also liked how the author was able to express the passion of Blake and Julianne without going into intimate detail. I recommend this book.

Mail Order Bride by Barbara McMahon. This is Julianne Dawson and Blake Reynolds' story.

Blake needs to be married and have a baby in the next year in order to inherit the family ranch. Blake and Julianne had known each other when they were younger. Julianne agrees to marry Blake. Will Julianne go through with this when she discovers the details of this agreement?

Blake, Julianne, and supporting characters all seem to have this desire to be loved and have the comfort and security of being part of a family. They just have a hard time letting their guards down.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters, the hot chemistry between Blake and Julianne, the side story of Shell (Blake's son) and Loni's story, and some surprising twists. I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, emotional, and heartwarming romance. The story leaves you with a warm and happy heart.

I really enjoyed this modern day version of a mail order bride. Julianne Douglas agrees to marry Blake Reynolds after answering his ad in Western Ranchers. In order to save his ranch, he must marry and have a child. He only has a year left, so running out of time. Julianne was hoping to marry Steven, but when he found out she was sick, he broke up with her. Perfect timing for Blake. This book also includes a secondary romance story with Blake’s twenty-one year old son, Shell and his pregnant girlfriend Loni. Loni doesn’t want to stay in Wyoming and marry Shell though. She has plans to become a famous artist. If you enjoy reading western romance, you will truly enjoy this fantastic read.

Blake is a rancher who needs a legitimate heir to inherit his grandmother’s ranch. He has an adult son that he’s still getting to know since he didn’t know of Shell’s existence until he was 15. As the title says, Blake signs up to get a mail order bride. Julianne needs to get out of New York City, so when sees the ad she agrees to marry Blake. She had known him years ago when she spent summers on her uncle’s ranch. Julianne wants a family and needs to escape the stresses of her city life.

Blizzards, health scares, and paintings bring this story to life – the babies are icing on the cake. For such a cliched premise, I enjoyed the story. I think you will too!

Blake must marry and produce a child within two years of his grandmother's death in order to inherit the five generation family ranch! Otherwise, the ranch goes to a charity. Julianne is looking to leave her busy New York lifestyle for a quieter life because of health issues caused by stress and answers an ad for a wife! Blake and Julianne are both well-written characters. Life at the rundown ranch is not without complications! I enjoyed this modern day mail order bride story by Barbara McMahon and recommend it to others! I received my complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

This is dramatic and interesting. Blake is stubborn, frustrated, reserved and a bit shy. Julianne is determined, caring and vulnerable. Shell is angry and unsure. Loni is a dreamer, who won't let anything get in her way. Together hey are a houseful of lonely people trying to become a family. Everyone is in love and everyone is frustrated with the one they love. And Julianne does everything she can to keep them together. It has a few surprises in the storyline, and a HEA.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

MAIL ORDER. BRIDE by Barbara McMahon.
A grandmother who owned the land, and now gone. The land strengthen him, to consider her codicil. Driving a new S U V
Julianna had a love affair with the West, and a brief crush on Blake years ago. Now, the place looked abandon and Blake looked intimidating, serious. A prenuptial,, marriage within a week, and a baby within the year..Could she do it, a kiss, left her wanting more. Will it be an adventure or a mistake. Good plot, and two stubborn people who make this a book you will want to read. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

I really liked this book. A modern mail order bride story between Julianne and Blake. There is also another love story between Shell, Blake's son, and Loni. I thought the author did a great job with both of these and how their stories and lives intertwined - a lot of authors can't pull this off. Such a sweet romance that starts off as a marriage of convenience but turns to friendship and then love. So glad they actually communicated. This one leaves you with a good feeling and hated to see it end.

ARC for honest review with no compensation. 4.5 stars

Mail Order Bride in the 21st century? Julianne Dawson decided that's exactly what she was going to do, move across the country, marry a rancher who she remembers from when she was young and hopefully fine her HEA. Blake Reynolds has no time to date or find a wife but he must marry and have a child within a year in order to inherit his family's ranch. Can Blake and Julianne make a marriage of convenience turn into an HEA or will it just be a bust??

It was fine. Kind of slow and meandering but a nice story. It switched perspectives without telling the reader so that was weird.
No sex scenes if that's your thing.
I felt like they weren't very appreciative of her. She did a lot for them and I didn't see much gratitude. Would have liked a moment where Shell thanked and apologized. Also, I didn't get how they made up during their last fight. It seemed like they were on the verge of being done and then all of a sudden were fine. Bizarre.
Anyway, could have been very good with some tweaks but it's not something I regret reading.

A sweet romance full of uncertainty when two totally opposite people that know nothing of each other come together for their own goal. Julianne experiences a health scare and deciding to change her life answers an ad placed by Blake (a home grown cowboy through and through) looking for a wife. Add to this scenario a son and ex-girlfriend from Blake's past that make everything more complicated. Will these two get their HEA or not?

What a great read. Blake was broody- gruff- stubborn... but that didn’t make Julianne back down. She gave as good as he gave. I’m so glad that even when she felt hurt, or not part of the family, she didn’t let it rule her. She found a way to work through it. She had a great backbone but still be such a great leading lady. My only complaint- the ending was too quick. I would have liked their feelings to be said to each other sooner.

A modern twist of a marriage of convenience. Julianne needs to be away from her stressful life and Blake needs a wife and heir. Blake and Julianne are the cutest couple. Both with hurts and worries. Needing each other so much yet holding onto the past. There were so many nuances in this book and layers. It was well written and impossible to put down. I'll be looking for more by this author.
