1987
Celia was found brutally murdered in a railway underpass. No one was ever charged with her murder, it was like the killer disappeared into thin air. But Celia knew her killer and after she died, she fought for her soul to re-enter her body, to carry on with life. But the force is too strong for her and her soul is cast aside. Celia did not want anyone to forget what happened to her.
PRESENT DAY
Alice has suffered from anxiety as far back as she can remember. With certain music causing unexpected emotional outbursts and recurring nightmares, she can’t take much more. But when she gets the job she applies for, the future seems brighter. Soon after her first shift at the office, the recurring dreams intensify, become more detailed. They feel real. And that’s when déjà vu sets in. Alice begins to wonder if these spells déjà vu, are actually memories…
I was instantly drawn in from the off. It was obvious the author was going to take me on a dark and twisted journey and I wasn’t wrong. It was almost like waiting for a car crash to happen. When you just know something bad is going to happen but you just don’t know when.
Overall it took me less than half an hour to read of which I was totally absorbed for every minute of it. The build up of tension was brilliant which made the climax when it came even more potent.
Déjà vu is the perfect book for when you are wanting a deliciously dark read that you can get stuck right into. Dark, disturbing and thrilling. I absolutely loved it.
For me as a reader, a short story really has to take me on a sprint. A sprint that leaves me breathless (well most sprints do). But not just any old sprint though, I need a good story with characters I care about all in a few pages.
Emma Clapperton has written a short, pacey quick read but definitely it packs a punch!! You don’t have time to breathe from start to finish, jumping from Celia to Alice and back again. Reading Déjà Vu, I felt goosebumps throughout, I was chilled to the bones reading about Alice and Celia.
The writing had me gripped and is an excellent taster of Ms Clapperton’s writing! She’s really packed a lot in to this short tale! I’ll be investigating her other books before long!

My Review
This is a wee short story, I normally don't read short stories as they leave me irritated and wanting more, usually just getting started when it ends. However with Deja Vu we plunge in quickly, we open with Celia, if you have read the blurb you know what is happening, if you haven't you just know something isn't right. We jmeet Alice in the next chapter, Alice is just a normal girl who suffers from anxiety, it is getting worse, music can set off panic and vomiting, not good when you are about to start a new job. Alice doesn't know why she is experiencing this, Celia needs justice for what happened, what is linking these two seemingly separate women?
There is an eerie atmosphere that builds from the first chapter, you know what has gone down but not where the story is going or where the link between the two main characters is. The timeline splits from 1987 with Celia to present day with Alice.
I couldn't figure where the story was heading, which in only 37 pages is pretty good going. I actually gasped at one point, it is testament to the authors ability to evoke an audible response from their reader. Whilst I am still not a fan of short stories I did really like this one, I have read this author before and have another on my TBRM to get to. 4/5 for me this time, if you like short stories you will love this, if you don't like short stories you will still enjoy this, I did!
Chilling, dark....and Terrifying....Will send shivers down your spine..
In 1987 Celia a young woman with all her hopes and dreams in front of her is going home after leaving a friends house..Down by the canal where the trains pass through...her life is cut short...she is brutally murdered...Celia although she is dying..is caught in Limbo...she knows who killed her...but her killer is never caught..Fast forwarding to the present Alice an anxious young woman is about to start a new job as a receptionist...Sometimes though when Alice listens to music she has visions, flashbacks of another time ...and now she begins to have nightmares....When Alice begins work the dreams and visions become more terrifying...Until one day ...When everything becomes terrifyingly clear....I have read all of this authors books....this one though is for me her darkest work...I could not put this down......Dark.....Terrifying and for me the best book she has written...Deja Vu...will send tremors of fear down your spine.....
I bought and downloaded a copy of this book after reading a review from one of my favourite bloggers - the lovely Sarah Hardy (By The Letter Book Reviews), we have similar tastes in books so I couldn't wait to get stuck in and read it the night it was delivered to my Kindle!
The book is only short but it packs a real punch and you are taken on a tense story that gradually builds up the suspense until the dramatic ending. The characters are great and I was guessing what I though the ending would be but there was a twist that I didn't see coming and it really threw me!
A book that really made me think - how many times have you felt déjà vu... Very well put together and a fantastic quick read - 5 stars from me!!
This is a creepy horror tale that is good reading on a damp and rainy morning.
The title informs us that this will be an unsettling read - déjà vu is, after all, the strange sensation that something one is now experiencing has happened before. The story sharply reminded me of the 1977 film Audrey Rose, starring an equally creepy Anthony Hopkins and dealing with the reincarnation of a young girl.
Déjà Vu by Emma Clapperton is a very short story of delayed revenge. Celia was a young teenager trying to get over a bad relationship with Tom. Her best friend, Lainey knew better than to invite Celia and Tom to the same party but that hadn’t stopped Lainey from doing it. She assured Celia everything would be alright because she had invited her cousin Simmy to the party. Simmy would protect Celia from the attention of Tom. Once Celia saw Tom again, the attraction was so strong she left Simmy to enjoy the party with his cousin.Simmy didn’t enjoy the party and a year later when he met Celia again, it did not go well for Celia. Simmy stabbed Celia to death.
But Celia did not completely die. There was some small part of her that remained to occupy another body. That occupation was not comfortable for Alice. She had memories that did not seem to be hers. She felt that sometimes another entity was showing her things in the form of nightmares. Alice sometimes followed impulses she didn’t recognize a reason for. Celia was hunting.
Readers might not know who had the most miserable existence; Celia, only partially alive and occupying the body of another, or Alice, tormented by nightmares and even daytime hallucinations. What is the resolution? Read this very short and very scary short story. It deserves four Amazon stars for packing a lot of action in such a small package.
Oooooh-eeee! Now where do I start with this wee beauty?! The story is set in Scotland where themes of mental health, fear, denial, revenge, anxiety and a search for justice and the truth weave seamlessly throughout the pages.
I was instantly hooked by the prologue of this novelette. It had me questioning everything and wondering where in the world would this story lead? Told from the perspective of both Alice and Celia along two separate timelines, we are taken on a journey of discovery and feel each characters emotions as the story unfolds. This was a terrifying and cleverly written plot which really packed a punch and when all was revealed…well OMFG, I was gobsmacked!
Celia’s character comes alive through a reflection back on what had happened to her. Alice is a voice but also suffers her own issues and you really feel for her. Everything about these two has you scratching your head, but they are wonderfully written and very relate-able. I have to be careful not to give any spoilers away, but I can say that the characters within this short story all serve a purpose to drive the plot and show the reader what is happening … and why.
Would I recommend this novelette? Abso-friggin-lutely! You’ll race through the pages, as the spine-tingling storyline reels you in and then throws you for a loop! Simply LOVED it!
