Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.

Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).

After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again.
Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.

City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.

Unfortunately, I did not love this novella either! Ghosts From The Shadow Market have been fairly hit or miss for me, and this is definitely one of the novellas that will not stick. Some of the novellas are so valuable and do a spectacular job at adding development to the many stories of the Shadowhunter Chronicles and others, like A Deeper Love, tend to lack that feeling of “I NEEDED this story”.

CW: war, death

I really enjoyed the setting of the story. I would not consider myself a huge fan of historical fiction, but I always enjoy reading snippets of characters whom I already love exist within my history/the history I’ve learned about in school.

I also enjoyed getting to see more of the friendship between Catarina Loss and Tessa – the thought of them living together and working as nurses to help with the war absolutely warms my heart.

Another factor I really appreciated about this story is we get a bit of a deeper understanding of Tessa's grief and see her start to come to terms with her mortality. Out of her appearances in the many many installments of the Shadowhunter Chronicles, we see Tessa either young or old. She's either just begun to understand her identity, or she's had over a century to live and learn. This novella takes place during an extremely trying time in Tessa's life and I am very satisfied that we get to see her being vulnerable and starting to recover.

Other than that, this story didn’t have a “WOW” moment for me. The ending was sweet and sad at the same time, but the plot did not impress me. It was a bit slow and stagnant in my opinion and I wish there had been a greater force propelling the story.

If you REALLY love Jem, Tessa, and Will and will grab at the chance for any story concerning the three of them, you’ll probably really enjoy it. If you’re looking for something more, you will probably share my thoughts on this one.

“…those two twin souls, the only souls she had ever loved.”

Friends, I was not expecting a WWII story set in London that starred Tessa Gray and Catarina Loss working as nurses. But oh my gosh, it was so beautifully and hauntingly unexpected. And there is still a Shadow Market that they bargain at, but even the paranormal war is impacted (both positively and negatively) by war. And Brother Zachariah just happens to be at the Shadow Market, where bombs are dropping from the sky, while he gets into his own altercation with a fae who thinks he is meddling in affairs that do not involve him. And I believe the point of this story was that we get to see that weapon poison that Julian and Emma deal with in Lady Midnight. I also cried for probably a third of this just because Brother Zachariah and Tessa both dealing with loss, while healing and living with love, just guts me every time. It’s so pure, and so hopefully, and just gives me all the feelings under the sun. The power of love is something so strong, and this story just left me in awe, honestly.

“If she lived until the sun died, there would never be any other for her besides Will and Jem, those two twin souls, the only souls she had ever loved”.

After finishing this I can't help but feel a bit disappointed. It was rather short and left me with an impression of a filler. Where I was hoping for a heartbreaking conversations and Tessa & Magus brotp, from all the Shadow Market stories this was the most boring one yet. London In World War II, Jem gets hurt, Tessa and Catherine saves him, the end.

In this novella we see Tessa during the second world war. Guys, all the talking about Will was just too much, I miss him a lot, ok? I'm happy to see Tessa still has Jem to help her remember Will and also as a dear friend, or maybe more.

A Deeper Love by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson is the fifth novella in the young adult paranormal fantasy Ghosts of the Shadow Market series. This series is another companion set of novellas that are brief glimpses into events set in the Shadowhunter world of the Mortal Instruments series.

This fifth book takes readers back to the time of World War 2 with Tessa Gray becoming friends with Catarina Loss after the death of William Herondale. The two have taken up jobs as nurses during the war working at a hospital when Brother Zachariah is brought in needing their help. With some of my favorites in this one I couldn't help but love this extra peek into their immortal lives during a time not touched on in the full length series books.

I always love reading about Jem, Will, & Tessa! They are, hands down, my favorite trio in literature. I remember reading the Infernal Devices series and just laughing out loud at the dialogue and interaction between. So I knew I would love this little shirt story and I was not disappointed in the least!

My quick and simple overall: awesome short story.

Holy sweet baby James.

That tore my heart out. Thanks a lot Clare. It wasn't enough that this story takes place 3 years after Will Herondale's death...but you all gotta tease us like that?!

Oh my Jem and Tessa.

And what a coincidence that I just finished reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and this was set in WWII!

I can't wait another month to find out what happens.

I am here, James. I am here, and I will always be here.

The year is 1940, World War II. Our favorite Tessa is now a nurse. I feel like Tessa is lucky and unlucky all the same. She is lucky when she found two people she love dearly and they love her in return. But the unlucky part is that she has to see her love ones walk away from her. We can still see her love for Will and Jem in this story. Her lost with Will's death and her secret love with Jem. We all know what happens in the future but it's still a good story for anyone craving a good Jem/Tessa moment. And that note Jem gave to Tessa though

In pratica nulla.
Invece no! In fondo lei è sempre lei, Tessa-li-amo-entrambi!

Okay I’m a weird person. Actually just because I like Jem just a tiny tidbit more than Will, I actually ship Wessa just a tiny tidbit more than Jessa. But comparisons ASIDE!!! My Jessa feelings oh my God it came in fucking waves reading this. The novella gives out just a little about the Lost Herondales and the plot is basically that Jem almost died and Tessa is freaking out it’s kind of boring. So there’s plot though not much, there are of course feels and the World War background. Seeing Tessa and Catarina tending to the wounded in the World War actually does seem interesting. AND THAT FUCKING JESSA SCENE OH MY GOD I’ve had enough with this anthology BRING BACK MY HEALTHY HEART.

also I propose two songs as the soundtrack of this novella (bc these songs have the World War feel to it):

Coldplay - Miracles (It’s a soundtrack to a World War movie called Unbroken and damn it’s really good!)

Lorde - Buzzcut Season

GDL con Edicola & Libreria: le nostre passioni...
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

"It was because he had a will fierce as starlight, burning in darkness and refusing to be put out."

4.5 stars

This was absolutely beautiful, and I feel like Cassandra Clare's writing really shines in these short stories. This story takes place in December 1940, three years after Will Herondale has died, and features Tessa and Catarina Loss. We see Tessa and Catarina work as nurses in war-torn London, and their paths cross with Jem after he has been injured with a killing blow from a fey after trying to inquire about a lost Herondale.

We finally learn who the lost Herondale was, and this paragraph will contain spoilers for that, so skip to the next paragraph if you want to find out for yourself. But I think there is a chapter called "The Lost Herondale" in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, so maybe everyone else already knows. But anyway, it's Tobias Herondale, and he is thought to have run from a battle where his fellow Shadowhunters ended up dying. But that story is wrong because Tobias was actually under a spell made to believe that his wife and unborn child were in danger. He ran to help them, but that broke the Law. The Clave couldn't find him so punished his wife instead by killing her. But Catarina was able to help birth the child, Ephraim, who she then raised as her own. One of his descendants was a boy named Roland who became a magician (mentioned in "Learn about Loss"). He was famous in the Downworld. He had a fight with Catarina and they parted badly. But he had really run away because he married a woman (faerie) who was a fugitive and went into hiding to protect her. They ended up having a child together. But that's still unclear because who is the lost Herondale: Tobias, Ephraim, or Roland? And is Roland Ephraim's son or grandson? Very confusing. I'm guessing Roland is the lost Herondale, but then what happened to Tobias?

Places mentioned: St. Paul's Cathedral, "lording over the city exactly as it had done for hundreds of years."

The next story, The Wicked Ones, will be out on September 11, takes place in Paris, and features Jace's mom Celine.
