The Toren : Shattered Souls

Rate this book
*****The Toren is a must read for fans of A Shade of Vampire, Twilight and The Mortal Instruments.******

Summit Case has no idea why her parents gave her up, or why her eyes are purple and change with her mood. The only thing she knows is that she is destined to be on the outside looking in. That is, until the most popular guy in school, asks her out on a date. However, instead of taking her to a movie, he parks the car in a remote section of Lower Manhattan and, after a few cryptic proclamations, stabs her in the neck.

Lucas Ford—a breathtaking angel with remarkable powers, swoops down and saves her. That’s when she learns that she’s the descendant of a long line of formidable, Angels called "Noru" and that Demons are seeking her out to strip her of her emerging powers. In addition, by saving her, Lucas awakens a new evil bent on the destroying all of humanity.

Her team must go on a dangerous quest to find a powerful relic that can contain the new evil. In the midst of the harrowing, and bloody mission, she looks for solace in the arms of the angel she loved at first sight—Lucas. But for some reason, Lucas is cold and distant. Did she misread his feelings for her? What do you do when the angel who risked his life to save you, now wants nothing to do with you?

Summit comes from great and powerful line female Angels. But while she has their purple eyes, does she have their courage? And now that she finally has a family, will she be strong enough to hold on to them or is she destined to lose both her family and the guy she loves?

Oooh I need to say this, I unfortunately don't remember the exact plot line. I read this book and the sequel a long time and right now my mind is filled with Indian history.. but what I do remember is I loved how excited this book made me feel. I picked this book by mistake, as I confused it with a book that I had to send review to the publishers. Anyway, oh god!! I loved so so much!!!!! I desperately searched for the volume 2. I couldn't find the third book but if anyone knows how to access it online, pls helppp!

Omg I need more

This book is truly done in Lola St.Vol style. She keeps you on your toes and apprehensive if the outcome. I love the characters and the real life struggles that they must ensure at the same time they must save the world. This is an awesome first book of the Toren story and I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

Good story with a good premise, but...

I have a lot of concerns about this one, especially with it being a YA book. There is a lot of alcohol consumption, especially on the part of the 15 year old heroine. The other characters are around the same age, seemingly minors, yet there are multiple instances of alcohol consumption. There is so the sex scene at the end, though there is a disclaimer for younger readers to stop and skip it, but we all know a younger reader will not stop and skip it. Add to this is the fact that the parents of these children allow them to all live together in a house with no adults present.

I liked the small bit of world building that was there, and the story itself is a good idea, but it is not very well explored. The bits of background are given in a rush. It does not seem very logical for even a 15 yr old to easily accept all of these changes in her life, though a small nod is given to the questions and distance any child abandoned to the system would feel, but again, it was glossed over. Further, this supposedly beloved child is sent on a dangerous mission/quest with extremely minimal training and without real access to the powers she supposedly has. Perhaps it is because I am a adult, but there is just not enough there to suspend belief and really get into the story. Further, cliffhangers are a pet peeve. If you want to write a series, by all means, write a series. Make each book a stand alone that feeds into the further story, I promise you will still get readers purchasing if you write the next book. Cliffhangers are a cheap marketing trick and demeaning to your readership.

Having just recently finished the Noru series and then jumping right into this one was a bit weird. I am still attached to the Noru's and having to live this new journey through their kids is definitely an adjustment. This book was good though. I did not expect the book to start off the way it did or for things to have turned out the way they did. It's pretty sad actually. Summit doesn't understand the love she's had from everyone, especially her parents, since before her birth. It's also fun to see Bex's son be the one to fall madly in love with Silver's daughter. Ironic I tell 'ya.
For those that have read the past series, it is definitely an adjustment, but it is still so worth reading. I am already enjoying this and this is only the first book. Let it be known...our favorite angels never get a break...

I'm always surprised by how wrong I can be about a book. And Shattered Souls was no different. Everything flowed together. There was action right away. I was never bored or felt overwhelmed. As for the characters, I'm obsessed! Maybe I'm just a fan of angst and heartbreak but in my little heart it will always be Summit and Lucas. No matter what. There's no one else. Excuse me there will never be anyone else.

Summit was someone I think a lot of us could see ourselves in. Where we have those moments we feel unloved and useless. Seeing her struggle with the realization that she's not so alone as she thought, I could understand her pain and sense of resentment because she's had to face a lot of things alone. Where she could of had her family to protect her from, had they not given her up. I definitely think her best moments, besides with Lucas, were expressing how she felt when it came to her family. Whether it was good or bad. And the fear she felt be having them being taken away. She's just girl wanting to be loved. I also enjoyed the supernatural elements to the story, from her learning how to use her abilities to the kinds of supernatural beings they encountered. This book had everything and the mythology was incredible.

We get to read things from Lucas POV and in the beginning I kinda wanted to get back to Summits POV, but the way he talks about his feelings for her, his past and what his team means to him. I think it was really important to have the rest of story be told from his prospective. There's no question why he acts the way he does towards Summit and the impact his past has on his life. You can't help but feel a sadness for him and question whether he will find a way to overcome the guilt he feels. I could honestly ramble on about how amazing Lucas is.

Damn that ending though...
There was a moment I thought 'hey maybe...' but quickly dismissed it.
But when it turned out to be true. I was like oh s%%t.
Then when one the members reveals something I was shocked.
I wasn't expecting that whatsoever.
Honestly the whole ending got me shook.

Disappointed in The Toren Series

The Guardians Series was amazing, 4 stars. About halfway through the Noru series I began thinking Lola should have stopped after the Guardians, but just after the 1st book of the Toren series, I am fully convinced that the series should have ended after book 6 in the Guardians. I feel like this is what happens when you have a really good thing and then you just keep it going to long...kinda like the walking dead lol. This book was very uninteresting and if I had not read the other two series, I probably would have DNF'd this one...everything felt so rushed but had no substance. After reading the Guardians this will be a disappointment. The story has a lot crammed in it so fast but tells nothing at the same time. We get a chapter on Sunny and her life as a "normal orphan " when suddenly her crush ask her out then tries to kill her , when she is saved by Lucas and thrust into the angel world , meets her real parents and her grandmother and then becomes the leader of the most powerful group to exist and is completely head over heels in love with Lucas, AND heading into a mission (the only one in this book , which only takes up about 3 pages ) all in the first few chapters. There is no depth to the characters or their relationship to each other . They just all of a sudden accept her as family and her leader. The. We switched POV and back tracked a bit to see everything from another characters eyes , which is a very cool way to do things IF going back through everything from another POV is going to give insight and add to a complex plot line...this however did not. It just repeated what we already knew .

Over all I would give this book 1.5 because I feel like the author has taken an amazing series and just run it till it should have been over...then kept writing .

SPOILERS!!

Maaaaan!! If I keep reading the same story I really should only be mad at myself, but still!! Come on Lola...can the children of exes not keep falling for each other? It was fine with the Noru series, but I could've done without the same issue again in this series. This was a fast and easy read. The beginning banter was my absolute favorite part since it reminded me of Rory Gilmore and all her relationships. Then it just spiraled down from there. There were good moments...kind of. Really wish there would've been some kind of reunion with having Summit back. I would've been good without Nikki showing up in the end...I mean what was that anyway? How are you going to come back to a scene with blood and only a locket left, and just assume "well she was killed"...what you don't have Para Detectives? I don't know it was silly to me that nothing came of that, and then we find out she was actually kidnapped. At least that's what I take happened. Who knows...maybe in the next book she turns out to be crazy. Oh and what did Bex do that Lucas is so mad...if he cheated on Diana...I'm going to be so mad and utterly disapointed...oooooh! I'm also annoyed with Nix...why would you try to kill your cousin fool?! Oh but I'm sure there's a "logical" explanation just waiting for me in the next book.

I'm going to be straight up and to the point. I don't like giving bad reviews but I sure as hell dont like an author think they can pull the wool over your eyes cause you're a hardcore fan.

I came in on The Noru series. I never read Guardian but a few pages and it seemed like the Noru for the most part. Fast forward... I see a sponsored ad for The Toren... I'm like yay new read and it's on KU. Get all cozy and start to read.

Let me say it started off with promise Summit was funny, snarky, and witty but that went away super quick like and came in Pryor's story all over again.

Lola honestly needs to put these stories out of their misery. I hate getting swindled into false hope. This was most definitely a rewrite of Pryor's whinny Ass.

I'm honestly betting $100 that the big baddie will be Lucas first love and dude at the market has something to do with it since all the foreshadowing hubbub is pointed out like a neon sign. Summit and Lucas' love story makes me want to vomit- not even gonna lie when first introduced I was all for some Nix but alas my bubble got busted with the first cousin card who also happens to be Lucas brother. It's just all a hot mess and again a repeat of the Noru.

Save your money ladies and gentlemen. Nothing new here to really see.

There is nothing I hate more than when a book's blurb says something like 'this is for fans of twilight or mortal instruments' and then you read it and want to stab forks into your eyeballs. This story is nothing like twilight or mortal instruments, so if you are a fan of those you will probably be disappointed, and then on the other hand if you hated those series you would hate this one even more.

I'm so sorry I hate leaving bad reviews, and I hardly ever do.. but this was such a snooze fest, I forced myself to finish this book and started the second one in the series just to see if it picks up, but found it was even worse.

Also what was with the sex scene at the end? Don't
Get me wrong I like a bit of spice in my books, a lot of spice actually.. but this read like a 12 year olds book the whole way through, which made the sex scene so awkward AF.

Yet another 'introduction' sequel to a series that already had too many books in it to begin with. This book just does the exact same storyline for the third time, only following the granddaughter of our beloved Emmy from the original Guardian series. Confused Yet? I would say this book is good, but that would be an exaggeration. It seems like the book wasn't edited because there were so many errors. The storyline was rushed, and just frankly didn't make sense with the rest of the series that predates it. I am severely disappointed because you can tell from the writing that the author just doesn't give the story time or dedication. I think it could have been great, but it is lacking in depth and details that the original series had.

This book continues with the grand children of the guardian team they are stronger and more exciting

This book as part of the new generation of angels coming from the last book was a little slow to roll but roll it did I'm sure that the new generation of angels will continue to get more exciting than the last as it continues with more missions and more danger with the new characters will just continue to get more exciting .it was a good read can't wait for more adventures with these younger stronger angels

Wow

I love the sassy, tough, young Summit! When her first so called date turns deadly her life takes a major twist. Summit learns she could be the cause of the world to end. She meets new friends and her family but it's hard for her to let go of her pain. Summit and her team have to complete what seems to be a impossible mission to save the both the human and her new found world from ending! Then a unsuspected visitor changes the whole thing and could destroy close friendship plus the team. I can't wait for book 2, I am hooked on The Toren series!!!

This novel started out great. It dragged me in had me guessing and even wanting more. But then half way through it switch perspectives, which is fine and I get that it made sense to do it this way. But I felt that the book lost some of its intense I want to keep going and the audiobook won't read fast enough - factor. I gave it a chance, all the way to the end mind you. To pick up and redeem itself. And to switch back to Summits perspective again, but it never did and it was disappointing.
Once I finished the book all my excitement to want to read the next left and I just could not bring myself to even look at the next book.
If you like books that do half in one person's perspective and the other in another person's. Then this book is for you. But for me I don't think I'll be continuing this series anytime soon.

Not

Ok, it started out funny and sweet but then the whole story was rushed and there are more questions than answers. Ahhh, its the same story as guardians and Noru but poorly written. Lola, if you truly have talent write a different story. SAVE your money and your time people. Unfortunately, I can't get any of it back.

Cliffhanger

Holy cliffhanger! This book was a great introduction to Lol as new series. There were so many twists and turns I didn't know what to expect next.

1 downside - there were several misuses words in this book. It may need to be edited again. It wasn't horrible or took away from the story, but it these me off at some points

Lola you rock!!!!

I'm a huge fan of the Guardians, Noru, and now the Toren series. There's nothing I dislike. It's a page Turner from open to close. I love the intensity of each character and how they really value family. I'm pulled in immediately with all of Lola's series. MUST READ YOU WON'T REGRET!!!

Lola you did it again!

I agree. This is your best story yet. Not that I didn't love the others, because I did. But this has the perfect amount of action and romance and an awesome hook. I was torn between not wanting to put it down and wanting to savor it until the next book. Have mercy on us "ticks" and hurry please :-)

This is the first book of Lola StVil I have read and I'm excited to read the rest of her books. The beginning communication was Rory Gilmore sassy and funny. The action was good and even though some of the dialogue was OK, get on with it, you said that already, the rest of the story more than makes up for it. You are left hanging. My question is, will the Drid return?

Suspense filled romance

When I started reading this book I had no clue it was an extension of the Noru Series much less the Guardian series. But I fell in love with it right away. Between the teams antics, secrets within, tension between team members and life or death all consuming love. It made for a wonderful read. Can't wait to get the rest of the books!

Epic

Brilliant start to the Toren series. We meet Summit, a young girl who, all her life has been passed from pillow to post through the care system. From one bad home, to worse, she has no idea her first ever date is going to end in the end of a life for one, and the beginning of an unbelievable life for another

Paranormal at its best!!

Wow!! I loved the Guardian stories. I loved the Noru stories. And this third set of stories set in this world is just as well done. Amazing storytelling and characters that grab you. No one tells Angel lore better than Lola St. Vil. And this latest generation is just getting started!

Not a fav. Story line was choppy and at times unrealistic. I liked Summit & Lucas and the star-crossed lover angle. However, the story needed fleshing out. Time seemed to move incredibly fast for her to get her powers, learn to use them, and be successful on her first mission. It had good moments but not enough for me to want to continue with the series. 🙁

soap opera

There are just too many anachronisms. The whole world is bizarre and far too complicated. The main character is supposed to be 15 and promptly walks into a bar knocking back shots. It is utterly ridiculous and the plot is worse than the most melodramatic soap opera. The writing itself is good, but the author needs to scrap this and start over.

Welcome return to a world I know well through the Guardians series
I have missed to generation between. But the book doesn’t require you to have read them. Read as audiobook. A good listen when you don’t or can’t concentrate to hard it’s an easy but enjoyable read as we watch the FMC become more than she ever felt possible.

Definitely not my favorite out of her books.

This book felt rushed, they do 1 mission and then suddenly it's 8 months later? What about the other 2 parts???? Lots of time skipping. Too much is missing, leaves me with too many questions.

Couldn't put it down

Great addition to the series, Lola continues to outdue herself. She has done it again, I laughed, I teared up ,i gasped in suspense and of course the queen of the cliff hangers leaves us wanting more.
