Ben Miller met the love of his life the day he crossed paths with Elle James in their high school cafeteria. New to Beaumont, he took a chance when he approached her. Their first encounter was everything his mother ever read to him about fairy tales. He saw the girl who would be his forever.

From the moment Elle James met Ben Miller they’ve been best friends. Everything they did, they did it together, from late night study sessions, family vacations, throwing bottles off the water tower, going to prom and finally moving to California for college.

However, after the almost tragic accident where she nearly lost her twin sister, Elle’s life hasn’t been the same, and neither has her relationship with Ben.

One fateful decision changes the scope of Ben and Elle’s relationship. For one, it means a new beginning. For the other, it means change.

Title: My Unexpected Love (Beaumont- Next Generation #2)
Author: Heidi McLaughlin
Genre: Romance
Publication Date: April 12, 2018

What is going on?!
Seriously, What is going on?!
Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to the world's Most Self Centered female protagonist EVER!!!!
I can't wrap my head around the fact that this is truly the same author that wrote Forever My Girl. First Ronan and now this?

A lot of people who love to read would understand the anticipating excitement of reading a book by one of their most cherished author but only a few would understand the sheer disappointment and sadness of losing that feeling.
My Unexpected Love could have been a sweet love story about a friend to lovers relationship but Elle Ruined it all for. Her whinny, self absorbed nature boggled my mind! I want to rave and rant. I want to spill spoilers and dissect every ridiculous decision Elle ever made but that would make this review as ridiculous as Elle. I am sorry but no no no no no.
Ben isn't all that great but compared to Elle, he is a joy to read about. I will spill one spoiler, I am so glad Ben finally decided to take his future into his own hands and not be shackled by Elle, who lets face is, always takes advantage of him.

Besides my rant (sorry), there really isn't much I liked about this book and that breaks my heart. Will I continue to read Heidi McLaughlin's books? I am not sure anymore. The last two books published have ruined me. That's two strikes, one strike left...so, maybe one last time? (Only cause I am hung up on the fact that it's Heidi's books).

Underwhelming

This is the second book of the Beaumont - Next Generation series, giving us the story of Elle Powell-James (daughter Harrison & Katelyn from My Unexpected Forever), and a slightly angsty but ultimately sweet friends-to-lovers story.

This book follows on from Holding Onto Forever, and there are spoilers for that book in this one, as well as some already-established build-up, so be aware that though this could be read as a standalone, it’s best read as part of the series.

Elle has lived a charmed life. She is close with her family, has great friends, is happy, popular and fortunate, and wants for nothing. Until a tragedy shook her completely, leaving her altered and struggling to cope with the influx of emotions. Even now, months later, she is finding hard to move forward and she is losing herself in parties and alcohol as she fights to find herself again.

Ben has been best friends with Elle since they met in high school. For him, it was love at first sight, even though she hasn’t seen him as anything more than friends, but he has become a part of her family, openly accepted and loved by her parents and siblings, and a pivotal part of Elle’s life. He was her rock through the hardest part of her life, and though he has wanted to tell her for years how he feels, he’s wary of rocking the boat and has kept his feelings a secret.

She’s my lifeline, my best friend. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her, and if she knew how I felt, she’d crumble.

Everything changes for Elle and Ben one uncontrolled night, forcing them both to look closely at their relationship, and their lives, but as Elle finally starts to wake up to what has been in front of her all along, Ben handles things differently, presenting the lifelong friends with a challenge they’ve never faced before and truly putting their feelings to the test.

I enjoyed this book. I admit that I did get a bit annoyed with Elle’s behaviour, and her complete obliviousness about Ben’s feelings towards her, but as the story continued I could see that it was a part of her journey, and her spiral down created a good start for the character development that was so desperately needed.

I shouldn’t be embarrassed for liking someone, but it’s Ben, and Ben is different. Ben is…well he’s my Ben and always has been … I want my best friend back, but I want so much more with him.

And Ben just melted my heart. He’s such a great guy – his huge heart and his unwavering support for his girl was beautiful to see, and though his love for her was unrequited for so long, he never came off looking like a doormat. I loved the direction of his story throughout this book, and I was so proud of him for the decisions he made and the way he handled it all.

Of course we all know how the book is going to end, but I was particularly happy with how this one all came about. After the angst of their story, it was so satisfying to see them both be so open, putting their hearts on the line and finally embracing all of those feelings.

“It’s taken me a long time to realize this, but now that I have, there’s no stopping it. You’re my unexpected love, one I never thought I’d find, at least not in my best friend.”

I loved the glimpses we got into Elle’s family life, the continued story progression for Peyton & Noah from Holding Onto Forever, and I’m so intrigued by the girls’ brother Quinn, and I’m excited for what I suspect is his story up next.

3.5 stars.

I loved the original Beaumont series but the Next Generation isn’t working so well for me. I didn’t much like Elle - she came across as a spoiled rich kid , which was the point but I couldn’t find any redeeming traits. I just didn’t like her much. And Ben , our hero, didn’t appeal much either. He seemed quite wishy washy.

I’m disappointed it didn’t work for me but plenty of people loved it and this is just my personal feeling on the book.

I will be reading more in the series - it was great to catch up with previous characters. Also , chances are not every book you read by a ‘go to’ author are going to be a hit every time.

HEA? More HFN.
Cheating? No. When the hero is trying to distance himself from the heroine , he takes a co worker out on a date & they kiss, which the heroine sees. He tells the h that if he didn’t have feelings for her then he could have pursued things with the co worker.

This is the second book in this series that follows the next generation of the Beaumont families as they cross the bridge to adolescence into adulthood. This time we get to know Elle, the other twin daughter of Harrison & Katelyn.

Elle is attending college at UCLA, alongside her best friend Ben. She lives with her step brother Quinn and she definitely enjoys the social aspect of living away from home. In fact, she probably over indulges more than she should and her grades are suffering.

When Elle nearly lost her sister in a terrible accident it really hit her more than she realised and despite things working out in the end, she continues to use this as her excuse for not applying herself in class and the reason why she needs to get drunk every weekend.

Ben has been her best friend since he met her when they were 14 years old. He has been in love with her every day since then too. Elle has him firmly in the friend zone but she also relies on him to be there for her for anything going on in her life, whether it is for happy or sad reasons. He has stood by her for so long and at times it has been hard to watch her make mistakes, including her choice in boys.

Elle really does take Ben for granted, she knows he will always be there for her and just when Ben thinks that Elle might finally see him as more than a friend he is proven wrong. He has got to make a drastic change if he is ever to move on and have what his friends have. He is close to graduating and knows what he wants. If that means a life without Elle then so be it.

This was a really sweet friends to lovers story that confirms that if you love someone you should set them free…..

I really didn't like Elle in this one. She comes off as "poor little rich girl". I was glad when Ben finally reached his breaking point and went to NYC and didn't tell Elle, how he then ignored Elle's calls and texts for his own mental health. Ben seemed to being doing so great in NYC, doing a job he liked, fit in with the other interns and there was the possibility of something with Talia. I wanted to Ben to stay there and be happy. Then Elle showed up apologizes, then bam, they are together, he turns down the good job to start a new one from scratch with Elle. All happy, happy. WTF! Things were wrapped up to quickly, and I felt like Ben ended up being a door mat to Elle, he took, barely over night, to think on Elle showing up and talking to him. Whatever, I'm just glad to be done with this one.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired reading the Beaumont series. And I love reading about the kids living life and finding love. Elle didn’t appear much in Holding onto Forever. I think Ben appeared more often than she did. I loved Ben in that book and I love him even more in this one. He’s so sweet and so absolutely in love with Elle. I wanted to shake him a couple of times and say, wake up! Follow your dreams, not someone else’s! At the beginning Elle is so self absorbed, she definitely does not deserve Ben. Overall this is a great story as usual and I also like reading about the whole family together again! I can’t wait to read how Quinn finds his true love!

I love when authors give us MORE to a series. This is the second book in the Next Generation series spun off the fabulous Beaumont Series. The kids a re grown up and getting into trouble all on their own!

Elle James has had her share of tragedy in her life--loosing her father and almost loosing her twin. But she has a strong family and extended family who have helped heal those wounds. Well, maybe she isn't quite healed.

Elle's best friend Ben has been around since high school and has supported everything she does. At the very least he is her sounding board. Elle spends most of the book very self absorbed and not really in tune with what is happening emotionally with Ben or with her family. She isn't real lovable to say the least.

After a night of drunken hanky panky, Ben decides he can't take it anymore and takes and internship in another city. He doesn't tell Elle and it turns out to be her come to Jesus moment. we get to see Elle's family pull together for her and help her get her head on straight.

Ben was a sweety always. He put up with a lot more than he should have around Elle. Hopefully they have a better understanding of each other now. Loved seeing all the rest of the gang. Can't wait to see all the trouble Jimmy is going to cause when his daughter starts looking for her HEA. Looking forward to reading more.

I was quite disappointed with this book. After Peyton's, with which we went through some pretty harrowing moments, I found Elle's story lazy and not very funny. I also found it lacking an epilogue, the last chapter felt unfinished, that there was so much more to be said about this couple

After spending most of the chapters, I'd say two thirds, being immature, childish, cowardly brats, in the last three they gained enough sense to act properly. Too rushed and implausible. Plus I failed to get that chemistry that the author has managed to convey to me with the other books in the previous series.
The good thing is that they stopped suffering and found that they were right for each other.

Phenomenal read that will definitely pull on your heartstrings. Ben & Elle go from best friends to lovers but the road to get to their HEA wasn’t easy. Reading their story will have your emotions all over the place. When you start reading you will want to yell at Ben & Elle at how stupid they act sometimes and then cheer for them because they finally are on the same page. You definitely will not want too put this book down once you start reading. I can’t wait to read Quinn’s book.

About My Unexpected Love:

Ella has hit a rut in her life. After her identical sister almost died, she's found it hard to move on from the tragedy even though Peyton has survived. Ella spends her night's partying and it shows in every aspect of her life, including the relationship between her and her best friend Ben.

Ben has loved Elle since the moment he saw her, his greatest fear is Elle's rejection if he ever were to come clean. When wires cross on the night of Ben's birthday party, Ben and Elle are about to face the true test that can either make or break their friendship.

My Thoughts:

I'm not going to lie, the first part of this novel was a rough start for me. I had a hard time connecting with Elle's character. In the past, I was intrigued by Elle. I knew her story was going to be a hard one to digest, I mean the girl almost lost her identical twin the same way she lost her biological father. With those facts alone, I knew Elle was going to have a rough stretch ahead of her. throughout the novel, I wanted more personal emotion from her. I felt in certain scenes, the emotions were forced.

Ben was a character I was also curious about and (without giving spoilers away) this man did not let me down! I loved the parts with Ben, No lie, for a minute I felt my anxiety peek for fear that Heidi McLaughlin would turn Ben into the type of character that I extremely loathe! However, this man is truly one of the good ones!

Overall, I liked Elle and Ben's novel. There were some rough spots but, It was a good read with loads of drama that results in an extremely much-needed happily ever after.

I cannot wait for Quinn's novel!!! He's the character I'm the most curious about!

Returning to these beloved characters was a treat. I loved the original series and now that I’m deeply entrenched in the next generation, it’s so much fun to return for time with much loved characters in both the Powell-James families.

Another great yet angsty read by Heidi McLaughlin. One incident is someone’s greatest wish, until it backfires... When you realize you’ve lost something you’ve always wanted. Elle spirals out of control until she hits rock bottom, and finally figures out how to redeem herself. Ben, such a sweetheart, realizes he needs to live his dreams and letting go has possibilities. Love this series.

** Spoiler free review**
As much as I loved this book, this is going to be a tough review. Not a bad one just tough. Elle Powell-James is a puzzle. When you first see her, you see a beautiful popular girl. But on the inside that girl is so lost. Even more so after her sister's accident. So she tries to numb away the pain. I wont say what she does, but I will say it has everyone worried. The one whose the most worried is Benjamin Miller..AKA the best friend. Who has been secretly in love with Elle since day one
I have to say I have a lot of respect for Ben. Being friend zoned is never easy. But he stood by Elle. He's a great guy.
Let me just say no matter how or what your using or being abused. The first thing to do is admit you need help.

I was soooo ready to see Ben and Elle's story. I wanted to give this five stars, but you'll read why I didn't in my review below. Four stars is nothing to spit at though!

Since Peyton's accident (see Holding Onto Forever ), Elle's life has been in a downward spiral. So much so that her family has staged a mini-intervention. Nothing like the ones you see on TV, just each member approaching her and telling her that her behavior needs to improve, or her future will suffer.

That includes her BFF Ben. Although he's not family, he's just the sot who's been in love with her since high-school. Ben's not getting through to her either, so he defaulted to keeping an eye on her from a safe distance, not wanting to see her self-destruct up close.

When Elle throws a surprise birthday party for Ben, things change for both of them. It becomes a major turning point in both of their lives, and they have to separate in order to make sense of things. But what happens when Elle figures out that Ben isn't just the friend she can take advantage of when she needs a shoulder to cry on?

Things get complicated real fast when feelings escalate, and college life becomes a priority that neither Elle nor Ben can ignore at such an important time in their lives. Both of them need to find out what they want - and if it's worth investing any more time and energy into their relationship.

I really loved this book, but the one thing that I had an issue with was Ben's wimpiness. I don't mind the fact that he followed her to California, but when he continued to enable her after that - and *still* get wishy-washy over her, I got a little frustrated. I liked that Elle faced her problems rather quickly, and took actions that seemed true to real-life.

I give My Unexpected Love four cross-country stars.

I don't think I've rated any books by Heidi a 3-star and I am sad about this. I just didn't feel the spark and burst of emotions I've felt from the Beaumont series to this new generation and I am one reader who absolutely craves for the "next generation" in all series that I love.

This is the second book of the Beaumont - Next Generation series. This is the story of Elle Powell-James ( she is the daughter Harrison & Katelyn from My Unexpected Forever) and this is a friends to lovers story. This book follows on from Holding Onto Forever, and there are spoilers for that book in this one so if you haven’t read HOF then I would caution you and suggest you read HOF first before reading on. This can be read as a standalone but if you do not like spoilers and like keeping with the series, then I would read each book in order.
Elle Powell-James is a puzzle that is slowly pieced together in this book. She and Ben were best friends as kids. Ben has been in love with her since they were kids. He's always been there for her, her best friend, her confidant. Ella seems like she has everything together but really she doesn’t and after her sister’s accident, she comes off the rails. She tries to numb away the pain. Something happens that changes the path and could cause Elle to lose the person she needs the most and could cause Ben to stop being there for her. Will Elle wake up to this in time? Will Ben get what he wants and dreams of most? Will their paths diverge or merge together? Only way to find out is to read Elle and Ben’s story.
I really enjoyed reading their friends to lovers’ story. There is a lot of emotions in this read--angst, heartbreak, pain strife , miscommunication, hope and love in this read. Ben & Elle were inseparable. They were the best of friends and sometimes things need to be shaken up in order to change. This is a story that shows what happens when change occurs. I disliked the slow build up , I do wish it didn’t take so long but other than that, I loved when Ben and Elle finally got back their groove and things started moving in the right direction after Elle was so lost. My Unexpected Love will have you grabbing tissues and rooting for Ben and Elle. Their love is enduring and true. I don’t want to give a lot of the story away but just know this is a very good read and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

My Rating: 4.5 stars *****

My heart broke for Ben in this book... just broke in half. He's been in love with Elle since the day he met her as a kid. He's always been there for her, her best friend, her confidant. The only problem is that Ben is hopelessly in love with Elle and she's kept him in the friend zone with no end in site.

After Peyton's accident, things shifted but not for the good. Elle has gone off the deep end and the only way to save Ben's heart is to pull away from Elle. He will never be the man of her dreams, so why has he wasted 8 years on trying to be just that for her, yet she never notices the other side of him.

This was such an emotional read. I loved Ben from book one. And Elle... I had some choice words flying through my head while reading. Elle finally starts to pull her head out of the sand.... but is it too late?

Can't wait for more of the next generation!!

I liked this one. Elle and Peyton are twins. Elle is the party girl. She's sometimes is a mess and sometimes makes poor choice but that's what makes her character seem real. Ben has been Elle's best friend forever. He wants more but she has friend zoned him. I was frustrated for Ben and so rooting for Elle to wake up and notice that there was a great man in front of her. This one has up and downs and is an emotional read.

I will never ever get tired of reading about Beaumont, and I really like Ben and Elle but I didn’t feel a conextion with them, even though I read a book in one day. I expect in the books to come I will see their love develop more deeply and not kind of rush (by Elle’s side).

An adorable best friends to lovers romance! Probably my favorite from the new Beaumont generation.

Ben and Elle are perfect for each other. Except they are the only ones who cannot see themselves together. Ben pines for his beautiful best friend, but keeps his true feelings hidden. Elle loves Ben, in a platonic soulmate way. He’s been with her through all her major accomplishments in her life. When one night together threatens their friendship and everything they know, they feel as if they have lost a piece of themselves.

Where do I even begin with this story?

The most unexpected part was the entire storyline.
Let me summarize, Elle's twin Peyton was involved in a serious accident and almost dies. Elle begins to spiral out of control hurting the people that love and support her along the way. Her "best friend" who clearly has been devoted to her since FOREVER is left out to dry by her selfish ways. He finally takes his future into his own hands, in the mean time ignoring any and all efforts Elle makes to contact him, and make amends with him. Then boom, she shows up one day, all is better, they admit their feelings for one another, and then the book ends.

What happened? I have loved every book within the Beaumont Series, and even Peyton's book "Holding Onto Forever" in the Next Generation Series, but this one did nothing for me.

Elle's character was selfish until the end. Ben seemed like a nice guy and I wanted this story to come together. I would have liked to seem them struggle together, not one treating the other like garbage, then the other completely ignores the first in return, then hello, I love you forever, The end. I wanted to see them come back from the pain, and learn to love and respect one another. I can't even begin to say how disappointed I am to write a review about a book series I have really fallen in love with, but this book left me wanting more. A storyline redo....

My Unexpected Love is the second book in the Beaumont- The Next Generation Series. These books are not standalones, so I recommend you read the original series starting with Forever My Girl before starting the next generation books.

I’m probably the odd girl out when I say that Ben kind of annoyed me. Now, don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate a beta hero but Ben, in my opinion, didn't fight or put himself out there. He ran away without even trying… So, I didn’t have a lot of sympathy for him.

Elle did have her flaws, but I found her journey more relatable. For her, this story is one of redemption and forgiveness, of falling down and learning how to get back up. She lived a life most girls dream of— good looks, wonderful family, best friend, money, and anything she ever wanted. The thing is, when you’re on top of the world, the fall from grace is a lot further down, and the impact may be a little harder. I loved her journey and the growth of her character.

Overall, this novel was a well-written friends to lovers romance and was an excellent addition to the series.

If you have already read the first book in the series, you will already known the strong friendship between Elle and Ben. Although Ben has always been in love with her, it is not until Peyton’s accident that he realizes that he wants more, that he wants to try to have a relationship with her.
And on his birthday his dream comes true, he spends the night in the arms of his beloved Elle. But the next morning his dream turns into a nightmare when she doesn’t remember what happened the previous night. When she asks, horrified, why they are together in bed and naked, he lies to her and tells her that nothing has happened between them except for a few kisses.
She has not been the same since Peyton’s accident, she spends all days partying, she is failing her classes, drinking nonstop, and her family and Ben are very concerned about her.
Ben is offered the job of his dreams in NY, and for the first time since he meets Elle, he does something for himself, so he accepts the job but says nothing to anyone-
Elle thinks that Ben is simply avoiding her bc of what happened on Ben’s birthday. It is not until weeks later that she discovers that Ben has moved to NY. And after a chat with Peyton, she realizes that she doesn’t want to live without Ben in her life. So she gets on a plane, goes to NY, and asks Ben for a chance hoping that it’s not too late for them.

Being in love with a woman who won’t give me the time of day weighs heavily on my self-worth. I’m not being fair, though, and shouldn’t assume Elle knows how I feel about her. It’s not like I’ve come clean and put my feelings out there. I’ve kept them shriveled up at the bottom of my heart, mostly out of fear she’ll reject me. I have no one to blame for my heartache other than myself. Why are you waiting for someone who doesn’t wait for you? Why do you care? Why do you bother? The answer is simple. I’m in love with her, and I have been since high school. For me, it was love at first sight.

After last night, everything has changed for us. The thought brings a smile to my face. Finally, we can be together. No more cat and mouse games. There won’t be any more hidden feelings, especially from me. I know how she feels now. “Just say yes,” I whisper against her shoulder. “We can make all our dreams come true together.”“What’re you doing in my bed?” The smile I’ve had since I woke up slowly starts to fade. Does she not remember last night? “We’re in my bed.” Her head slowly turns, and her eyes dart back and forth wildly. She sits up quickly, her hand instantly going to her head. “Oh, God. Nothing happened, right? I mean we’re naked, but it doesn’t mean we slept together. Please tell me we didn’t sleep together.” I can’t look at her. This can’t be happening. “We kissed,” I tell her. “But I think we must’ve passed out. I don’t really remember.” Except I remember it all. Everything. Every word you said to me. The lie falls easily from my mouth. It’s long after my front room door closes, long after my back starts aching, and well past the point of a broken heart.

As much as I don’t want to admit it, he’s right. I need to move on. I need to do what’s right for me. I think last night had to happen to bring me to this point. Elle and I are on two different pages. She wants to party and hook-up. I want to graduate and start a career and a life with someone I’m in love with. That’s something we can’t do together. I’ll be gone approximately ten weeks, living in an overpopulated city, working a nine to five job, three thousand miles away from the people I consider my family, with a three hour time difference. I’m excited, nervous and welcoming the opportunity to do something for myself. Every decision I’ve made since the day I met Elle, has been based on her. It’s time for Benjamin Miller to expand his wings and see what else is out there in the world, and if doing so means Elle, and I are going our separate ways, so be it. It’s probably time and honestly should’ve happened four years ago. California was never my dream. It’s always been hers.

I also miss my best friend. Ben’s the guy who I’ve seen almost every day of my life since I was fourteen. He’s also the guy who has conveniently disappeared, although that isn’t entirely true, I have seen him, in passing, but he’s clearly ignoring me. Deep down, I know it has to do with the night of his birthday. Whatever happened is my fault. The thing is, I don’t know exactly what happened and he’s not talking to me.

Are you in love with Ben?” I shrug. “I don’t know. Part of me thinks I am. My heart is broken right now, but the other part questions if it’s love or longing because Ben’s been my best friend for as long as I can remember. Either way, I’ve hurt him and he’s gone or ignoring me, and I want to fix things. I want to go on a date and see if we’re compatible. I don’t know, Mom. I just want Ben back in my life and I don’t know how to make it happen. I want the kind of love where either of us walks into the room, and no one else exists. Noah and Peyton have it. I want it.” “And when you walk into the room, who do you see standing there, waiting for you?” “Ben,” I say. “It’s always been Ben. It's just taken me years to figure it all out.”

“I will never forgive myself for the way I treated you the morning after your party. I was a cold-hearted bitch, and I wish I could tell you why I blocked it out, but I can’t. All I know is that I remember the night fully, Ben, and it was amazing. I’ve never felt so connected to someone, except for you. I don’t deserve you. You and I both know it, but I’m asking for a chance. We may not be right for one another, but we’ll never know if we don’t try.”
