Spell Bound

Rate this book
Have you ever pondered the depths and subtleties of the letters and words that so casually run through our minds, mostly ignored, but when examined often reveal our feelings, motives and our sense of self? These mysteries are brought to life by our writer who reaches for his muse, literally, through letters and words to create the protagonist's story. After an auto accident leaves Kyle Wilson, a cynical librarian, trapped in a coma, he finds himself, in a dreamlike trance, surrounded by giant letters who, by forming words significant to his views on life, force him to re-examine his past, future, and his place in the world. Floating in and out of a comatose state with little hope of ever regaining consciousness, a spell-bound Kyle confronts the psychodynamics of his childhood and the personalities that helped shape it. Slowly, his cynical perspective fades as he makes the circuitous journey from obtuse to observant, with the guidance of the words in his life and ghosts from his past. Starring an eccentric, lively cast of characters, from FAITH, RELIGION, PHENOMENOLOGY and HERESY to MUSIC, TEENAGER, CANVAS, and ENLIGHTENMENT, to name a few. Niles takes us on a wild ride, from the Land of Letters to the Land of Words and on to other realms.

Can't rate it as I have not completed it yet! Good writing, makes some sense but I personally am having a time staying focused. Could your/ our minds really function as such.Does it really break down areas into separate words. Who knows. . but. I suppose it could if you are blessed with dream/unconscious thoughts. . will give it (for now a 3.5 rating..when I do get it completed will change rating- -P/
So, fast forward--- I've completed the book...I've changed my rating by half a point. When I could stay focused - because I seemed to get distracted - just thinking of putting my day into separate words,definition...didn't work fully for me..but it could I suppose! ..
I wouldn't put this on a dnf list - or a dnr ( do not read) , because it is a readable book...but I did put it aside a couple times before actually finishing it. And if like me, you could find yourself overthinking it..so don't do that..enjoy it.--P/
(You'll notice I started a review I believe 2 years ago-- lordy, it took me that long to return to it - sorry about that!!) But I suppose later is better than never-right!?

This is a very unique book, different than I expected from the write-up. It reminded me somewhat of the Phantom Tollbooth. It would have been nice to have some illustrations included but the descriptions were very well done.

Interesting but confusing

I enjoyed then puns the author included in this book. I found the storyline interesting but at times confusing. I also felt the ending came too quickly after the climax of the story.
I won this book thru a Goodreads.com giveaway.

This is not a book I would have gone out of my way to read. I won it in a goodreads giveaway. I entered the giveaway because it did sound interesting. And boy, was it! What an interesting journey tied to our everyday language.
