Pattern Matching Coverages: Shut Down the Modern Pass Game with Simple Coverage Rules

Rate this book
Most coverages were designed to combat offenses based out of formations with two running backs and a tight end. While these coverages were great for their time, the game has evolved and defensive coverages must evolve with them. Modern football has created pass first offenses that can shred an unprepared secondary quickly. The days of drop back zone coverages where defenders drop into space and hope the receivers run to them are dead. Pattern Matching Coverages takes the principles of zone defense and combines it with the pressure of man to man techniques. The simple schemes are designed to combat the major passing concepts of modern football and pressure Quarterbacks into making a mistake. Equip your players with the tools to shut down the modern passing game!

Thanks for checking out my Author Page.

My name is David Weitz, I am a teacher and football coach at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, IN.

I'm lucky in that I am one of the few people who knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life by 3rd grade. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher and a football coach and I've been lucky enough to land my dream job.

I have a long history of coaching both rugby and football going all the way back to when I was in High School. While in High School I helped to create a youth rugby program in Indianapolis. This team started with one team of about 12 kids and has expanded to include over 100 kids. I continued to coach in this program throughout College. In addition to coaching this rugby team, I also coached football at Bloomington High School North and was a part of the school's first Semi-State Appearance.

After college, I wanted to experience playing rugby at a high level and moved to Hawkes Bay New Zealand. While in New Zealand I taught and coached rugby at Hastings Boys High School and played for Havelock North. During this time I completed the training for my IRB Level 2 Coaching Certification.

After a little over two years in New Zealand I moved back to America and resumed my football coaching career. Over the next 6 years, I coached at both Lawrence Central (for 1 year) and Warren Central where I was able to be a part of 2 State Championship Teams. At these schools, I held a variety of different positions on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball and was the Special Teams Coordinator. All of these experiences have helped me to develop for my current role as Offensive Coordinator at Hamilton Southeastern HS.

Throughout my coaching and teaching career, I have used writing as a way to help me work through my coaching philosophies. If you want to truly master your teaching philosophy and coaching process I have found the writing is the best tool. I attempt to give my readers a clear, and concise, picture of our philosophies and schemes without any extra fluff that many companies use to pad the page numbers of their books.

I always love to chat about football or rugby and would love the opportunity to connect with you. Twitter is probably the best way to reach me, I look forward to hearing from you!

I thought this book was a very good book for anyone who wants to learn about coverages, especially a new coach like myself. I think anyone who has been coaching for a while and are well versed on defensive coverages would not find this book very helpful as I don't think it would offer them anything they did not already know. This book is geared more for a novice to coaching or football in general. The only critique I have for the book is that the illustrations or graphics leaves a lot to be desired. I thought they could have been better and more of them, and that would have enhanced and driven some of the points home. Overall a great book and I would recommend it.

Simple yet complete

I really enjoy David's books. This one should be read by DB coaches as well as offensive coordinators. Simple yet complete overview of cover 0-4.
