About the author

Petr Čornej is a prominent Czech historian who focuses on the history of the late Middle Ages, especially on Hussites, the history of historiography and the research of historical memory.

His scientific and pedagogical career is connected with the Institute for Czech and World Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the Faculty of Philosophy and Pedagogy of Charles University, the Literary Academy and the current Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

He has won the Magnesia Litera Book of the Year 2020 award for his monograph Jan Žižka: Život a doba husitského válecníka.

This is a little yet informative book for me, whose an ERASMUS student in Ostrava right now. I really learned a lot about it and the stories are interesting and following a chronological order from the oldest to the newest stories. If you want to know a little bit like me, then I really recommend it. A small and informative book.

Česká republika letos zve na řadu oslav. Příležitost je 100. výročí od založení samostatného Československa - vznik 1. republiky, dvouleté období mezi 1. a 2. světovou válkou.

Z tohoto důvodu se uskuteční 100 kulturních a společenských akcí a sportovních akcí.

Československo se objevilo po první světové válce jako jeden z nástupnických států Rakousko-Uherska. Středoevropský stát existoval (s krátkým přerušením ve druhé světové válce) od 28. října 1918 do 31. prosince 1992. 1. ledna 1993 bylo Československo rozděleno na samostatnou Českou republiku a Slovenskou republiku. Obě země si pamatují nadaci před 100 lety v roce 2018 a představují to nejlepší, co zanechaly světu.

„Dvě desetiletí mezi dvěma světovými válkami představuje v české historii mimořádně rušné období. Česká republika se tehdy etablovala jako jedno z center moderního evropského života. Vrcholy roku výročí
Chtěli byste navštívit živý skanzen v Rožnově pod Radhoštěm nebo se chcete zúčastnit exkurze o výrobě českého národního nápoje, piva? Návštěvníci se mohou vydat po stopách prvního československého prezidenta TG Masaryka nebo prozkoumat pohraniční opevnění. Pro všechny nadšence umění jsou jedinečné procházky do budov výjimečných českých architektů Adolfa Loose, Josefa Gočára nebo Jana Kotěry. Dalším kulturním vrcholem jsou malířské výstavy Alfonse Muchy, Františka Kupky a Emila Fialy.

Nejvýznamnějším projektem při této příležitosti je společná česko-slovenská výstava. Garancí Národního muzea na české straně, Slovenského národního muzea a Slovenské národní galerie na slovenské straně.

Národní technické muzeum připravuje výstavu Made in Czechoslowakia v letech 1918 až 1992 - průmysl, který dobyl světovou frontu. Muzeum umění Olomouc spolupracuje s partnery ze Slovenska, Maďarska a Polska na projektu, který představí umělecká hnutí a trendy ve střední Evropě kolem roku 1918. Česká filharmonie uspořádá koncert pod širým nebem u příležitosti 100. výročí svého založení, opery Liška Bystrouška (The Cunning Little Vixen) od Leoše Janáčka lze vidět jako koncertní verzi v Praze a New Yorku a výstavu Bedřich Smetana - Má vlast. A v Brně můžete očekávat od 26,5. do 17.6.2018 festival RE: PUBLIKA 1918 - 2018, v rámci kterého můžete očekávat výstavu Avant Garde, taneční festival „Tanec Brno 100“ a mnoho dalšího.

100. výročí České republiky oslaví také významné české instituce, včetně církve, armády a kulturních orgánů. Navštivte Českou republiku a objevte příběhy, které tuto zemi provázely a formovaly po staletí.

Content wise, this is a great crash-course of Czech history, especially for a foreginer. It can serve beautifully as a representative of the history of Czechs abroad, which I believe, was the original prupose after all. It is not too in detail to feel like a PHD paper, and reads more like a bunch of stories, easily accesible to anyone.

That being said, I could not give it higher grade in good consiousness due to the structure. The book is littered by gramatical and stylistical mistakes, clearly indicating two things: 1. it was written originally in Czech and translated literally, by someone with English as a second language, not understanding its nuances properly; and 2. there was little to no proofreading the text after translation (hence also the gramatical errors, albeit they were fewer than the former). This bothered me a lot during the read, even though I enjoyed the actual content of the book.

Last Christmas, I had the opportunity to travel to Prague, Czech Republic for vacation. While I was there, I shopped in a bookstore on Wenceslas Square where this book begged me to take it home so it could teach me about the history of Bohemia. *wink* Though it’s been a few months since my visit, I was glad that I bought this book. It went over a lot of history about the origins of the Czech/Bohemian people, the founding of Prague and important events in the history of the country. My favorite part was reading about the ruler’s and the wives who were buried in the Prague Castle - we spent a whole day there on our visit wandering around and wondering who the people were in the paintings and tombs. It was nice to learn about their lives in a quick, informative way. Over all, I really liked this short history of the Czech people. It was just enough to educate you on the topics without being overwhelming. If another trip to Prague is in the future, I’d definitely re-read “Great Stories In Czech History”!

This is the longest 150-pages book that I've read in my life. You can really tell is a translation without a lot of effort in editing. I was really excited to learn more about Czech Republic but damn, this book really made it hard. Even with the pictures it was hard to follow and quite dense.

I really enjoyed when Mozart appeared, for me the highlight of the book: something that I didn't know in detail and that adds value to what I know about Prague.

Probably in Czech is better but I'm not there yet.

Interesting book, but painfully obvious that it's a translation. Should've been proofread a couple times before publication.

However, it was very interesting to read about some events in European history from a Czech perspective - I will definitely try to do the same with other countries as well, as it allows for even more reflection and understanding of said events.

A light-handed survey of a millenium of Czech history with details of the many kings and shifting boundaries that affected the people as they emerged from control by their own royalty, foreign royalty, Nazis and Communists into democracy. Lots of upheavals for a small country of industrious people.

Some clear translation errors, typo’s and a map where France is indicated as Germany aside, this book was a nice introduction into Czech history.
