This fic, y’all, THIS FIC. Reread in celebration of the surprise (and delightful) CWR re-emergence WITH A SEQUEL TO THIS FIC, following her abrupt and total departure from the Internet in November 2015.
Read for the first time in 2014, during a very very tough time in my life, and watching Newt and Hermann go through something INFINITELY TOUGHER (if scientifically impossible in our universe) helped immensely. CWR is just an incredible writer with comprehensive and thoughtful world-building to an extreme degree, and it’s a privilege to read her stuff. Her senses of character construction and narrative pacing are near-perfect, and also the fact that she wrote song lyrics for Newt’s fictional band that then GOT TURNED INTO REAL SONGS THAT CAN BE LISTENED TO (as I have!) should also be noted because how cool is that.
This isn’t a walk in a park, per se, because of its difficult subject material around panic attacks, selfhood, depression, existential despair after saving the world in a science fiction setting — and yet it remains a favorite of mine and brings me just so much joy to read. There are a whole host of great Pacific Rim fanfics out there but this may just be the best of all.
I know this isn't strictly a 'book' but the voice inside my head has been the voice that Elementals uses for Newton since I was sixteen and I re-visit it at least twice a year.
WHAT HAPPENS TO A FRACTION OF A HIVE MIND? dcwt is an ode to love, to humanity, and an epic with its own soundtrack. reading this for the first time in 2022 got me deep into philosophy; rereading it never fails to remind me just how much i love science and the unknown. we are such wonderful critters. everyone watch pacific rim and then read this NEOW!
Look this thing is weird as hell and I did not understand *so many* of the words, but once my brain adjusted to the writing style (give it a few pages) I read all 800ish pages? And I had a good time? Which is impressive.
If you want ~800 pages covering ~6 weeks of Newt & Herman immediately post-Pacific Rim, written in a truly singular style and also *the slowest of slow burns* then give this a shot. It’s a monumental achievement on the author’s part regardless.
can all fanworks appeal so specifically to my interests forever now kthx. appreciated the use of voyager as a long term metaphor and the excessive loquaciousness. EXTREMELY effective use of voice.
