Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) was the greatest Italian poet after Petrarch and one of the great prose writers of the nineteenth century. Caught between devotion to the classical past and a sense of the impoverished present, Leopardi rejected both the Catholicism of his childhood and Enlightenment optimism. In his world, all that we love and value is illusory, and therefore to be loved the more. His existential resolve makes him the most compelling of Italian poets.

SEMPRE CARO MI FU
Giacomo Leopardi per me è stupore puro: come abbia potuto amarlo l’ultimo anno di liceo, quando quasi tutto quello che mi veniva imposto da imparare mi disgustava piuttosto, e invece lui era incanto puro, piacere, bellezza, anche per un adolescente.
Stupore per una lingua che suonava al contempo antica e moderna e mi parlava, mi risuonava dentro.
E poi molti anni dopo ricevute in dono ho aperto queste pagine e ritrovato lo stesso fascino, la stessa magia. La stessa bellezza.
E mandarle a memoria, per esercitarla, e per assorbire splendore.
E il naufragare mi è dolce in questo mare.

Surely life means misery...زیستن همانا به معنای بدبختی است
شاید بتوان همه شعرها و زندگی جیاکومو لئوپاردی را در این جمله بالا خلاصه کرد. شعرهایش مالامال از عشق های نافرجام جوانی اش و زندگی مصیبت وار بشری است
در عنفوان جوانی دار فانی را وداع گفتم
!از آن هنگام که زیستن، از شیرین ترین حالت برخوردار است
.و پیش از آن که قلبِ آدمی از بیهودگی هر نوع آرزویی آگاه باشد
او شاعری بزرگ بود که در همان جوانی بخاطر چهره ی نازیبایش نتوانست در دل زنانی که دوستشان می داشت جایی پیدا کند و لذت عشق را بچشد. همچو سیرانو دو برژراک(نویسنده فرانسوی) در سراسر زندگی اش رنج کشید. این شاعر مشهور ایتالیایی در نامه ای به "پیه ترو جیوردانی" می نویسد: من به مدت 7 سال، به صورت مداوم، بدنم را با درس خواندنی افراط آمیز و جنون آور، برای همیشه نابود ساختم...بدبختانه، خود را به سوی نابودی سوق دادم و دیگر برای همیشه، خود را محکوم ساختم، بدون آنکه دیگر هرگز بتوانم علاجی برای خود بیابم. من خود موجب گردیدم تا حالتی بسیار تحقیر آمیز در برابر دیدگان سایر انسان ها پیدا کنم. و متاسفانه اکثر مردم، صرفا به این جنبه از انسان که همانا ماهیتی کاملا ظاهری دارد توجه ابراز می دارند
آلفرد دوموسه، شاعر نمایشنامه نویس و نویسنده معروف فرانسوی می نویسد: در سرزمین ایتالیا، زنان این مرز و بوم، هرگز چیزی از نبوغ و هوشمندی نفهمیده اند...بدون تردید، آنها به هوش و ذکاوت و نبوغ احترام می گذارند، اما هرگز به فردی نازیبا یا خمیده که بیشتر به گوژپشتی شباهت دارد اجازه نمی دهند به آنان نزدیک شود. حتی اگر این گوژپشت بینوا، ذهنی به درخشش آپولون داشته و شاعری والامقام باشد...! برای زنان ایتالیایی، زیبایی صورت، از مهمترین عناصر، برای راه یافتن به دهلیز قلب آنان است
لئوپاردی در زندگی با بیماری هم دست به گریبان بود و تنها پناهش از این همه رنج، ادبیات است. او می نویسند: با نهایت خضوع و خشوع، میل دارم بدان آیا به راستی می توان سعادتِ اقوام و ملل را به دست آورد، بدون آنکه سعادتِ انسان ها به صورت فردی ، وجود نداشته باشد؟...انسان ها بنا به طبیعت، محکوم به بدبختی و فنا هستند، نه به خاطرِ انسان های دیگر، یا نوعی تصادفِ توضیح ناپذیر. لذا ما انسان ها، برای اینکه خود را از این بدبختی اجتناب ناپذیر تسکین خاطر بخشیم، به احساساتِ ناب و نیروی تخیل و توهماتِ زیبا و آرزوهای بزرگ و تحصیل علم ِ زیباشناسی اقدام می ورزیم. بدین شکل است که برای من، مفیدترین چیز در این عالم، همانا خوشایندترین چیز از میان چیزهای مفید است؛ و نیز آن که ادبیات، یقینا و بدون ذره ای تردید، مفیدترین چیز به شمار می رود! و لذا نمی دانم که آیا در چنین مواردی، باید به راستی خندید یا دست خوش احساس ترحم و رقت شد...؟
لئوپاردی در مورد جایگاه واقعی ادبیات می گوید تنها سیاست است که باید در میان صفحات روزنامه ها و کتاب ها جای بگیرند و ادبیات حقیقی یگانه چیزی است که آدمی نمی تواند در مجلات و روزنامه ها بنگارد

“[…] È funesto a chi nasce il dì natale.”
È stata una lettura lunga, complessa, sofferta, quella dei “Canti” di Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), uno dei più grandi letterati e pensatori della storia italiana e non solo. Le cinque stelle del voto qui espresso non illuminano appieno il valore di un’opera di tale portata, dinnanzi alla quale non si può che restare sedotti e frastornati. Una raccolta di liriche che si rivela un vero capolavoro e per cui è forse impossibile – per noi lo è di certo! – scrivere una recensione all’altezza che possa analizzare ogni singola sfumatura di questi versi immortali, tanta è la loro ricchezza di forma e contenuto. Ogni parola, ogni espressione, ogni accento si può dire, nascondono un universo di cultura e conoscenza sterminato.
C’è moltissimo pure di Leopardi stesso in questi “Canti”, dei quali, nel corso del tempo, quando l’autore era ancora in vita, uscirono diverse edizioni; l’ultima, completa, è stata quella postuma che l’inseparabile amico napoletano Antonio Ranieri curò e fece pubblicare nel 1845 con l’aggiunta de “La ginestra” e “Il tramonto della luna”, composti alla falde del Vesuvio un anno prima della morte. Nato sul finire del XVIII secolo a Recanati, piccolo centro della provincia marchigiana allora facente parte dello Stato Pontificio, Giacomo ben presto si rese conto come quel luogo fosse troppo stretto per il suo genio. Seppur conte di rinomata casata, il Poeta vedrà sempre il denaro come un problema da risolvere, più che una certezza su cui poter contare, la cui mancanza era addirittura una forte limitazione che gli impediva di affrancarsi da una famiglia micragnosa anzitutto di sentimenti; non a caso, tentò più volte la fuga, impedita dal padre Monaldo e dalla gelida e severissima madre Adelaide Antici, custode inflessibile dei cordoni della borsa di casa Leopardi. Dall’alto della propria immensa cultura, egli non si occupò solo di poesia, ma anche di politica, scrivendo appassionate pagine sul destino dell’Italia, all’epoca ancora suddivisa in tanti staterelli.
Anche i “Canti”, così come tutte le altre opere, sono intrisi di un cupo pessimismo dovuto in buona parte al proprio stato di salute, minato fin dalla giovane età pure a causa dello sforzo quasi sovrumano richiesto dallo studio quotidiano cui si dedicava (la guida all’interno della biblioteca di casa Leopardi parla di non meno di cinque volumi al giorno letti e studiati da parte del giovane Giacomo, giusto per avere una minima idea delle sue famose “sudate carte”). L’aspetto fisico lo condannò a una esistenza di solitudine interiore, quella dell’anima, quella che getta nella disperazione chi ne è colpito, anche se ciò non si tradurrà mai in netto rifiuto della vita. Come avrebbe poi cantato Guccini, Leopardi viveva “con le stesse voglie e con gli stessi eroi, ma ali più piccole per lo stesso volo” (“Cencio”, dall’album “Quello che non”, 1990). Gli amori non corrisposti, i sogni, i desideri non esauditi contribuirono a formare questa vena pessimistica che lo avrebbe accompagnato sino all’ultimo dei suoi giorni, quando, a Napoli, a sostenerlo non vi era altri che l’affezionato Ranieri.
Come non amare Leopardi e la sua poesia? È stato bello ritrovare fra queste pagine testi di cui si conserva in genere memoria dai tempi della scuola: “A Silvia”, “Il sabato del villaggio”, “L’infinito” (di cui ora ricorrono i duecento anni), “Il passero solitario”, “Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell’Asia”… Così come è stato interessante scoprirne altri, invece, del tutto sconosciuti, specie quelli di carattere storico e politico, che in verità godono di minor fama rispetto ai cosiddetti “idilli”. Intrapresa come coronamento di un’emozionante visita a Recanati, tale lettura, più che punto di arrivo, diventa punto di partenza per futuri approfondimenti. Perché l’opera è vastissima e il fascino dei suoi versi continua a risuonare tra quei “sovrumani silenzi” che s’odono ancora sul Colle dell’Infinito.

Leopardi died just under forty, so possibly his many poems about dying grow from his own health, but they may also derive from his Romantic replacement of religion—like Keats’s odes, the Nightingale “My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains/ My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk…,” or his Grecian Urn, or even his To Autumn. Leopardi was my first Italian mentor’s favorite poet outside his Medieval specialty— John McNally, Chaucerian at the U of Minnesota. Since my mentor was a hilarious former Chicago cop, I did not realize what a downer Leopardi can be.
Many of his occasional poems here are sepulchral. On one ancient bas-relief, a youth is depicted departing, “Al nido quando ti parti,/ Non tornerai,” from the nest you fledge, never to return. “L’aspetto / De’ tuoi dolci parenti / Lasci per sempre.” You leave the sight of your family, your new home is underground. (77)
But one poem I’ve quoted and referred to, since it evokes astronomy (which I spoke on at Harvard Center for Astrophysics). Leopardi seems to counter Pascal’s fear of space—perhaps vast space challenges the existence of God. Famously, Pascal wrote “Le silence éternel de ces espaces infinis m’effraie” (Pensées)
Leopardi fixes his mind on the infinite silence, from a withdrawn hill with a hedge shielding part of the horizon, and “Il cor non si spaura.” (L’infinito, in Canti 34). The sound of the wind contrasts the living present with the infinite silence, “questa / Immensità s’annega il pensier mio:/ E il naufragar m’è dolce un quest mare.”(final lines of 15 hexameter iambs). The immensity drowns my thought, but it’s sweet to sail on this sea.
Alla Luna, sometimes called by its twelfth line, La ricordanza, begins invoking the Moon, O graziosa luna, over this hill, now as the year turns, I come full of wonder and anxiety. Now the delightful Moon reminds me of the great pain I remember from this time of year. But I thank you, Gracious Moon, for filling me with memories, even of pain.
Another, "La Sera del Di di Festa," The Feast-Day Evening, also begins with looking at the Moon, again preferring a windless night, as in "L'infinito": Oh, my lady, the Moon reveals every mountain, every path (ogni sentiero), but where are the sounds of the ancients, the Romans? The rumbles across the earth and the ocean? "Tutta è pace e silenzio." All is peace and silence.
Contrast plenty of noise from the soccer field in “A un Vincitore nel Pallone,“ To the winner at Soccer, “with a beaming face and happy voice…Learn how feminine timeout wins over sweaty virtue; listen how the heart moves with high desires. The crowd at the arena or the track echoes with your shuddering..” Apprendi,/ E quanto al feminile ozio sovrasti / La sudate virtude.” (18)
In a couple of translations of Simonides, he adapts Christian teaching, “Ogni mundano evento/ È di Giove..o figlio …” Every World event derives from Jove or his son. Men struggle through a thousand evils, but…

Che dire? Nulla... e silenzio...

Da ragazzina Leopardi è stata una vera e preziosa scoperta. Mentre i compagni di classe si annoiavano, lo sbeffeggiavano, ridevano della sua vita, io dalla prima lettura della prima poesia, l’ho subito sentito dentro, mi ha smosso qualcosa di profondo proprio nel cuore. Ancora adesso le sue poesie mi affascinano, mi commuovono, le sento risuonare nell’anima.
Versi eccelsi, musicali, capaci di evocare immagini di una potenza straordinaria, presi però da una vita quotidiana semplice e dura allo stesso tempo.
Per me Leopardi è un bellissimo tuffo nel passato.

I Canti di Leopardi non sono una semplice raccolta poetica, sono un viaggio nell’animo umano fatto di luce e vertigine. Ogni componimento sembra aprire uno spazio immenso partendo da un dettaglio minuscolo, una siepe, un ricordo, un fiore solitario.
Leopardi riesce a trasformare il dolore in pensiero, la nostalgia in musica, la fragilità in consapevolezza. La sua voce è limpida, intensa, sorprendentemente moderna. Leggerlo significa fermarsi un momento e guardare in faccia l’infinito, senza paura, con quella strana dolcezza che nasce quando qualcuno riesce a dire ciò che noi sentiamo ma non sappiamo esprimere.
Una lettura che resta, che scava, che accompagna.
Leopardi riesce a trasformare il dolore in pensiero, la nostalgia in musica, la fragilità in consapevolezza. La sua voce è limpida, intensa, sorprendentemente moderna. This poetry collection was a little bit out of the ordinary for me. I usually read poems in fits and starts, savoring them as I go along with other things, and sometimes a collection can take much longer to work through than you would think. And I don't always read about the poet while I am reading the poems, unless I am stumped for any idea of what they are trying to say.
When I was setting this title up on my currently reading shelf I noticed a review which said the poems were very depressing. I thought oh, great. Well, I'll give it a go anyway. Along came the preface, with this bit of insight for me: Leopardi was substantially a poet,—that is to say, he had imagination, sentiment, passion, an intense love of beauty, a powerful impulse towards things ideal. The sad tone of his speculations about the universe and human destiny gave an impression of mournfulness to his lines, but this rather deepened the pathos of his work.
Okay, I was really ready for sad poems after that. And they were sad. And angry. And sometimes whining. In the first poem To Italy (1818), he wonders what happened to the ancient splendor of the country, and what would the heroes of past times think of the current country, where
The youth of Italy
Their hireling swords for other lands have bared!
Oh, wretched he in war who falls,
Not for his native shores,
His loving wife and children dear,
But, fighting for another's gain,
And by another's foe is slain!
I did not know enough about Italian history to know what was happening at that time, so I did a little exploring and it seems this was the time of the Napoleonic Wars and their aftermath. Italy was not even a truly unified country at that time. So there was even more of an explanation for the sadness. A patriotic poet, trying to shame his countrymen into becoming great again. The first few poems are repeats of this same theme: long verses that ask what would Dante and Cicero think about the Italy of 1818?
I thought there might be a change in the poem To His Sister Paolina On Her Approaching Marriage but Leopardi earned his first virtual smack upside the head from me here. Imagine writing to your sister on such a supposedly joyous event as her wedding and instead of wishing her happiness etc etc you tell her this in the very first lines of a long ranting poem:
Since now thou art about to leave
Thy father's quiet house,
And all the phantoms and illusions dear,
That heaven-born fancies round it weave,
And to this lonely region lend their charm,
Unto the dust and noise of life condemned,
By destiny, soon wilt thou learn to see
Our wretchedness and infamy,
My sister dear, who, in these mournful times,
Alas, wilt more unhappy souls bestow
On our unhappy Italy!
Oh, brother. (And then the sister didn't get married at that time after all, go figure.) But this made me curious: what was this guy's problem? Off to wiki I went and found that he had huge health issues (probably tuberculosis of the bone) and very strained relationships with his parents, and had fallen in love when he was eighteen but was rejected and never got over it, and wrecked his already fragile health by too much study as a young man and on and on. In other words, he was a mess and as I read along in the collection, I began to wonder how he ever managed to keep from killing himself. But I also became very annoyed with the man. Many people have serious issues in life and still manage to find and focus on Joy, even if it is just one moment of it a day. They find it and they don't constantly complain about their past or their present. It is called acceptance, and is a mature thing to be able to do. Leopardi was a deep thinker, very true, and a talented poet, also true. But he was a very unhappy, miserable person who never seemed to grow up, and to me most of his poems were merely fancy versions of high school angst.

Oh, brother. (And then the sister didn't get married at that time after all, go figure.) But this made me curious: what was this guy's problem? Off to wiki I went and found that he had huge health issues (probably tuberculosis of the bone) and very strained relationships with his parents, and had fallen in love when he was eighteen but was rejected and never got over it, and wrecked his already fragile health by too much study as a young man and on and on. In other words, he was a mess and as I read along in the collection, I began to wonder how he ever managed to keep from killing himself. But I also became very annoyed with the man. Many people have serious issues in life and still manage to find and focus on Joy, even if it is just one moment of it a day. They find it and they don't constantly complain about their past or their present. It is called acceptance, and is a mature thing to be able to do. Leopardi was a deep thinker, very true, and a talented poet, also true. But he was a very unhappy, miserable person who never seemed to grow up, and to me most of his poems were merely fancy versions of high school angst.

Giacomo Leopardi foi um dos maiores poetas italianos depois de Petrarca e Dante. Infinito é o seu poema mais curto e considerado o mais perfeito.
Eu não gostei muito quer deste, quer dos outros; achei uma poesia muito "geográfica"; mais focada na natureza do que nos sentimentos humanos.

Srtange how reading for pleasure changes everything. I hated Leopardi growing up, having to study him in school. I thought of him as a loner, even a looser. I was wrong- he was a smart man, way ahead of his time, who had a magic way with words.

Ornate and often dreamlike, experiencing Canti is like exploring the Hellenistic ruins Leopardi was so fond of: splendorous in youth, now turned barren by time.
Masterfully tuned in both style and evocation, you can see why Nietzsche called Leopardi one of the four finest prose stylists of the 19th century, and indeed one of Italy's greatest poets.
Though known for his pessimism, this wasn't due to personal disgraces. Leopardi was considered deformed, rejected by all the women he loved, confined to a small town near Naples, constantly ill (from relentless study so they say), and died at the age of 39. Yet he was incredibly sensitive and smart. Two things combined that rarely work - something we should keep in mind if we want to understand his reflections.
There were many literates of the time who moved objections to him, repeating that he was just unlucky and hated life for that reason, that he mired himself in anger.
In all actuality Leopardi loved life, even too much, and it was that love that made him hate it.

Diciamolo: parlare di Leopardi è un po' come sparare... sull'uomo che caga. Le battute, con il gobbo di Recanati, si sprecano. Siamo abituati a vederlo come l'emo della situazione, un incrocio tra Sheldon Cooper e Gollum, il 'Pausamerda' del XVIII secolo. Se fosse un meme, sarebbe forever alone. Nemmeno De Sanctis è bastato a riabilitarlo, figuriamoci se poteva riuscirci Elio Germano.
Il problema, con Leopardi, è che lo spiegano male. Lasciate perdere Alessandro D'Avenia. Date retta. Per spiegare il buon vecchio Leo ci vorrebbe il professor Oak. Sì, il professor Oak, quello dei Pokemon. I Pokemon, come tutti sanno, hanno in genere tre stadi di evoluzione.
Prendete Charmender, ad esempio. All'inizio non è altro che una mezza salamandra sfigatissima. Una vera pippa. Charmander, in questo caso, corrisponde al pessimismo individuale o al pessimismo storico di Leopardi. La sua poesia è ancora abbastanza fiacca. Per dirla con la cartuccia del vostro Game Boy: “non è molto efficace”. Bene. Dopo aver combattuto con qualche 'pigliamosche', Charmander si evolve. Diventa Charmeleon. Qui siamo più o meno dalle parti dell'Ultimo canto di Saffo. Arriviamo, passo dopo passo, al pessimismo cosmico, che poi è quello che si studia a scuola e il motivo per cui i liceali odiano Leopardi. Le poesie, in questa fase, sono parecchio deprimenti. Peggio della musichetta di Lavandonia. Magari non avrà mai incontrato il Team Rocket, ma anche Leopardi ha passato i suoi guai, “guai molto grossi”, e ficca tutto il suo malessere nei testi. Il pessimismo cosmico è quello del pastore errante dell'Asia, del sabato del villaggio e via dicendo. Con "A se stesso" il nostro Leo tocca il punto più basso, pare una puntata di BoJack Horseman.
Grazie a Dio, però, la storia non finisce qui. Già, perché poi Charmeleon si evolve ancora e diventa nientemeno che Charizard. Charizard, signori. Vale a dire il Pokemon più cazzuto di tutti. Charizard è un fottuto drago fiammeggiante. Charizard può usare turbofuoco, cioè.
Tutti conoscono Charizard, ma pochi conoscono il pessimo eroico di Leopardi perché di solito è relegato nei capitoli in fondo e nessuno se lo caga. In questa fase avviene una specie di magia. Leopardi tira fuori i coglioni. Smette di piangersi addosso e sale sul ring come Undertaker dopo la resurrezione. Le poesie di questo Leopardi sono una vera bomba. Prendete la 'Ginestra', ad esempio. Non c'è più quella lagna insopportabile, ma una cazzima che lascia di stucco. Leopardi non ha più la candela al naso e fa a pezzi le 'magnifiche sorti e progressive' e rivolge un appello – bellissimo, profondissimo – agli uomini, perché si uniscano in una 'social catena', cioè affinché si sostengano l'un l'altro per combattere contro il vero nemico, la Natura, con coraggio, senza paura. Nessuna rassegnazione, ma un messaggio di resilienza, potente, devastante, che fa terra bruciata, come il Vesuvio – lungo le cui pendici la ginestra resiste, stoica, indefessa – come l'attacco fuocobomba di Charizard. E' una vetta lirica altissima, l'Everest della poesia italiana, che riempie di speranza e ci fa titaneggiare – noi, piccoli ed insignificanti esseri umani - sulle rovine fumanti del mondo. Ecco. Magari non sopportate il pessimismo storico o quello cosmico, ma non potete dire di amare i Pokemon se non amate anche Charizard.

Once in a very great while we read something that changes our life and this, dear friend, is one of those books. Sincerest congratulations to John Galassi for his wonderful translations and very helpful notes. His suggestion that a newcomer should begin with the idylls is well heeded. However, the bays and laurels are Leopardi's alone. Prepare to stand in the presence of greatness.

leggendolo ho avuto la sensazione che di capire quale fosse la principale ispirazione di D'annunzio per il suo Alcyone (anche se gabriellone esagera sempre e non riesce ad essere snello come fa leopardi).
nei primi 3 canti anche un grande slancio patriottico, amaro.
ora come fanno tutti potrei mettere i soliti pezzi ma ne metto 3 che mi son piaciuti di più:

Piacer prendea di quella vista, e il bene

Dilettevol quaggiù null’altro dura,

Ecco turbar la notte, e farsi oscura
La sembianza del ciel, ch’era sì bella,
E il piacere in colei farsi paura.
Un nugol torbo, padre di procella,
Sorgea di dietro ai monti, e crescea tanto,
Che più non si scopria luna nè stella.
Spiegarsi ella il vedea per ogni canto,
E salir su per l’aria a poco a poco,
E far sovra il suo capo a quella ammanto.
Veniva il poco lume ognor più fioco;
E intanto al bosco si destava il vento,
Al bosco là del dilettoso loco.
E si fea più gagliardo ogni momento,
Tal che a forza era desto e svolazzava
Tra le frondi ogni augel per lo spavento.
E la nube, crescendo, in giù calava
Ver la marina sì, che l’un suo lembo
Toccava i monti, e l’altro il mar toccava.
Già tutto a cieca oscuritade in grembo,
S’incominciava udir fremer la pioggia,
E il suon cresceva all’appressar del nembo.
Dentro le nubi in paurosa foggia
Guizzavan lampi, e la fean batter gli occhi;
E n’era il terren tristo, e l’aria roggia.
Discior sentia la misera i ginocchi;
E già muggiva il tuon simile al metro
Di torrente che d’alto in giù trabocchi.
Talvolta ella ristava, e l’aer tetro
Guardava sbigottita, e poi correa,
Sì che i panni e le chiome ivano addietro.
E il duro vento col petto rompea,
Che gocce fredde giù per l’aria nera
In sul volto soffiando le spingea.
E il tuon veniale incontro come fera,
Rugghiando orribilmente e senza posa;
E cresceva la pioggia e la bufera.
E d’ogn’intorno era terribil cosa
Il volar polve e frondi e rami e sassi,
E il suon che immaginar l’alma non osa.
Ella dal lampo affaticati e lassi
Coprendo gli occhi, e stretti i panni al seno,
Gia pur tra il nembo accelerando i passi.
Ma nella vista ancor l’era il baleno
Ardendo sì, ch’alfin dallo spavento
Fermò l’andare, e il cor le venne meno.
E si rivolse indietro. E in quel momento
Si spense il lampo, e tornò buio l’etra,
Ed acchetossi il tuono, e stette il vento.
Taceva il tutto; ed ella era di pietra.

leggendolo ho avuto la sensazione che di capire quale fosse la principale ispirazione di D'annunzio per il suo Alcyone (anche se gabriellone esagera sempre e non riesce ad essere snello come fa leopardi).
nei primi 3 canti anche un grande slancio patriottico, amaro.
ora come fanno tutti potrei mettere i soliti pezzi ma ne metto 3 che mi son piaciuti di più:

La mattutina pioggia, allor che l’ale
Battendo esulta nella chiusa stanza
La gallinella, ed al balcon s’affaccia
L’abitator de’ campi, e il Sol che nasce
I suoi tremuli rai fra le cadenti

Che il sole ad altre terre il dì rinnova.
S’apre il ciel, cade il soffio, in ogni canto

Un magnifique recueil de poésies que j'ai découvert bien trop tard! Leopardi donne une toute autre dimension au "moi" romantique. Les premiers chants sont des odes à l'Italie, où les références à l'histoire antique sont nombreuse (on reconnaît là les passions et études de Leopardi). Ce que j'ai aimé de ce recueil, en plus du de l'évolution, de la véhémence patriotique aux idylles amoureuses, c'est la capacité, ou plutôt le génie de l'auteur a avoir su rendre universel les sentiments de l'amour, de la solitude et du malheur, sans faire du "moi" un niais ou un égoïste. Voyez dans "l'Infini" :
"Je les compare : et l'éternel, il me souvient,
Et les mortes saisons, et la présente
Et vive, et son chant. Ainsi par cette
Immensité ma pensée s'engloutit:
Et dans cette eau il m'est doux de sombrer."
Ou dans "le Renouveau" :
"Pourtant l'ancien amour
De ces pleurs était la cause :
Au fin fond de mon sein
Mon cœur vivait toujours"
Même si mon italien est déplorable, j'ai apprécié pouvoir lire le texte original pour entendre sa sonorité. Amateur de poésie romantique n'oubliez pas de lire Leopardi aux côtés de Wordsworth!

Leopardi feels like a pure drop in an ocean of noise.
I highly recommended him to those who want some antidote to contemporary art, contemporary poetry, e-love affairs and one-night stands, shalowness, foolishness, irony…
An antidote to living in the city too.
Compared to French XIX century poets, Leopardi sounds like a man from the XVI century or even from Dante's times, and, paradoxically or not, that's what makes him great.
Leopardi wrote like an alien, indeed.
A loose translation that I hope will do:
To Himself
Now will you rest forever,
Weary heart of mine. Dead is the last deception,
That I thought eternal. Dead. Well I feel
In us the sweet illusions
Not only hope but desire extincted.
Rest forever. You have
Trembled enough. Nothing is worth
Thy beats, nor does the earth deserve
Thy sighs. Bitter and tedious
Is life, there is nought else, and the world is mud.
Rest now. Despair
For the last time. Fate gifted mankind
With nothing but death. Now despise
Yourself, nature, the sinister
Power that secretly commands our
Common ruin,
And the infinite vanity of everything.

Leopardi aveva una sensibilità ed un genio unici, il suo lascito è questa splendida raccolta in cui si interroga sui grandi quesiti dell'esistenza umana. Le sue poesie son tutte meritevoli ma tra le più belle, secondo me, spicca il "Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell'Asia'':
"Che fai tu, luna, in ciel? dimmi, che fai,
Silenziosa luna?
Sorgi la sera, e vai,
Contemplando i deserti; indi ti posi.
Ancor non sei tu paga
Di riandare i sempiterni calli?
Ancor non prendi a schivo, ancor sei vaga
Di mirar queste valli?
[...]
E quando miro in cielo arder le stelle;
Dico fra me pensando:
A che tante facelle?
Che fa l'aria infinita, e quel profondo
