Things often happened too quickly, in Ellie's opinion, especially when they had been a long time coming. Last year, for example, the fall rain had come several weeks later than it normally did. The local farmers had just started to worry about drought, when suddenly the area was deluged with rain for a solid month.
And this, now – well, this had not exactly been something that Ellie had been waiting for. Unlike the other Plain girls in her community, she had never had time for courting. But recently, quite a number of Ellie's friends had suggested to her that it was now time to start thinking about marriage. It was a few years after everyone else had – at twenty, Ellie had already seen several of her childhood friends married and starting families.
After never thinking about such things for so long, Ellie had been taking her time to mull the question over. She had not come to a decision, or not quite yet. She still had her little brother Micah to take care of, and she was busy with her job.
And then Andrew happened.
