If you ask the confident and snarky skater girl, and she’s in the mood to share, she’ll tell you her name is Cat. She might even tell you that she’s hooked on graffiti, 80s movies, and having fun—the riskier the better. Cat will share a good time with you, but she won’t ever trust you enough to share her heart. It’s protected by secrets and she’d like to keep it that way.

Cat knows one thing for certain: Love isn’t really her thing.

If you ask the confident and rich pretty boy, he might tell you his name is Huck. He might even tell you he loves a challenge and is used to getting his way. He won’t tell you that his life is a mess because he risked his heart by trusting the wrong girl. Huck is ready for a change, he just wasn’t ready to get hooked on someone like Cat.

Huck knows one thing for certain: Love hasn’t done him any favors, but Cat just might be worth the risk.

Cat and Huck think a one-night stand seems harmless, but when all the little secrets they didn’t share turn out to be toxic truths, they realize how easily a one-night stand (or a few) could ruin everything.

The thing is, you can be ruined in more than one way. Once you’re HOOKED, what wouldn’t you risk for the chance at more?

DNF @ 34%. I just didn't connect with either character, and didn't feel their connection to each other. I found myself skimming a lot because I was a little bored. I also lost my mom to cancer, so I wasn't feeling going through that process again. Sorry Ms.Manzari.

Author: Christine Manzari

Genre: NA, Romance

Stars: 2/5

*The author of this book sent me this paperback copy in exchange for an honest review, so don’t expect anything less than that. I will always give an honest review, be it a positive one or a negative one.*

After reading two books that I didn’t love in a row, I was really really hoping that this one would do the trick and get me out of my reading slump. After reading the description of the book, I figured I’d give it a try.

I enjoyed HOOKED, but I didn’t fall in love with it..It started really good then everything changed and it started to get predictable which I hate. The problem is with the main characters.

First Cat: Cat isn’t an easy woman to live with. She’s not an easy woman to handle. She is strong and surrounded by walls, unbreakable walls -she thought so- I loved Cat, I connected with her. She was a passionate woman, about almost everything she loved. Aaaaand then she started to get annoying. Kept arguing about everything and making a big deal out of nothing.

Huck was different. I couldn’t predict which route he would be picking. He surprised me and amazed me. Meeting Cat was his turning point, from day one and he somehow admitted and accepted it. I loved Huck, a lot. But I always wanted more from him. I didn’t like it when he gave the chance for Cat’s dominance. It didn’t sit right with me. And let’s not forget the love at first sight!!

Jay was awesome!! I loved him and how he became fast friends with Huck. I loved him and the relationship between him and Cat. He’s probably my favorite character!

I understood Cat in the beginning although I never approved of her actions and that impeded my enjoyment of the book but as it progressed, I just became fed up and annoyed. It is so predictable and uses a formula common in YA contemporaries. The writing is lovely at first but afterwards I found it rather excessive and just started skimming parts.

I give this book a 4.5 stars, i absolutely loved it !
Cat,Cate,The wicked bitch of west coast was one of the best female characters i read about, she was hilarious with the right amount of snark and sass, for once in this genre i didn't have to wonder what made the guy fall in love with her because even i did.. and i'm picky.
Jay was even better and i wish he was more in the book, his accidental 'friendship' with Huck was pure gold.
it was a light read with an easy text and mesmerizing words, it was unexpected and very intriguing but most of all it made me laugh.
i kinda felt it was a bit rushed with Huck's words at first but it turned out well; i would recommend this to anyone looking for a different creative fun romance read ♥

After listening to my friend Ethan talk about Christine's books over and over again, I decided to jump on the opportunity to read and review this book. I am so very glad I did. It's absolutely one of my top books of the year so far – and I have a pretty good feeling it just might finish the year as one, too. I'm struggling to put my feelings about this book into words that will do it justice. It really was the perfect book at the perfect time for me. I might even have read it twice.

On the surface, Hooked might sound like any other new adult book. It's so far from that though. Christine's writing and the characters – main and secondary – make this book so very special. It had absolutely everything I look for in a book – strong and sassy female lead, hot and swoony male lead, incredible secondary characters and strong relationships with them, sexy times, humor, heart and a whole load of feels.

Hooked is told from both Cat and Huck's points of view. I love this when it's done well, as it was here. It gives me a chance to really get to know both characters without prejudice. There's no wondering what the guy is thinking when he does something or why the girl is acting like she is. I'm in the characters' heads and I feel like I'm right there with them the whole time. Both Cat and Huck's voices were so clear in this book. I loved both of these characters so hard.

Cat was a tough lady. She had no time for relationships. The only person she really let get close was her best friend, Jay, and her mom. When she sees Huck the first time at the beach, there's a definite attraction and when they talk, they click. It was never meant to be anything real. One night just wouldn't be enough for these two, however. Huck is new to town and just getting over a bad breakup. Cat isn't the type of woman he usually dates, but he can't help but be drawn to her. When things get complicated and Cat's ready to cut and run, Huck is the one who refuses to let her. What he felt for her was real and he wasn't going to let her get away just because it was inconvenient and she was scared.

I can't tell you just how much I loved these two characters together. They had chemistry from the very beginning. Their banter was perfection. The sexy times were hot. I loved reading along as they let down their walls and began to let each other in. What was developing between them might not have been something either of them was looking for when they met, but it was undeniable. They were a great match – just different enough to bring out another side in each other, but similar enough that they understood the other well.

As much as I loved the romance between Cat and Huck, I loved the secondary relationships and their impact nearly as much. Cat's roommate and best friend, Jay, was a fantastic character. He reminds me so much of some of my friends. I love when a book showcases strong friendships. Not only was Jay a source of support for Cat, he was also there to give her a kick in the pants when she needed it. You know, like real friends are. I adored how he and Huck were able to become friends, too. There were some great bromance moments between them. Cat's mom was another special character. In so many books, the characters don't have a good relationship with their parents – and as someone who has always been close to her mom and dad, I have a difficult time relating. The relationship between Cat and her mom was full of so many good things, and ultimately, what helped Cat realize she didn't need to run any more.

I read Hooked in one sitting. On a plane, no less. I was so invested in these characters' stories that I couldn't even think of putting it down. I laughed and cried. It punched me in the feels. A couple times. Everything about this story was real and raw and I loved every single minute of it. (Ok, maybe not EVERY minute... there were some parts that were difficult to read. But they were important and necessary.) I appreciated how each character evolved throughout the book. I can't say a single bad thing about this book. It was pure perfection in my eyes.

This book is everything. If you're a new adult fan, you must pick this up immediately if not sooner. Christine's writing style was refreshing and she's on my auto buy author list after Hooked. Books like this are why I read. I can't wait to see what she gives us next.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book wasn't short. It was long , lots of details and events. I felt like I was living with the characters , walking through their ups and downs and cheering them on.

Love is a funny thing. Once you decide someone is worthy of it, you have to trust that person not to break you. And some people -most people actually- aren't worthy of that trust. I've learned the hard way that it's just easier not to risk love. Broken hearts are too big of a pain in the ass.

Cat isn't an easy woman to live with. She's not an easy woman to handle. She is strong and surrounded by walls , unbreakable walls -she thought so-. I loved Cat , I connected with her. She was a passionate woman, about almost everything she loved. I loved her dedication and loyalty. I admired her ability to deny her feelings for so long. But after all, I understood her. I wanted Cat to have her happily ever after. She deserved it, even if she didn't know that :')

But sometimes pride is stupid. And so is the heart

Huck was different. I couldn't predict which route he would be picking. He surprised me and amazed me. Meeting Cat was his turning point, from day one and he somehow admitted and accepted it. I loved Huck, a lot. But I always wanted more from him. I didn't like it when he gave the chance for Cat's dominance. It didn't sit right with me.
But he dealt with Cat right, he knew how to handle and most importantly he never gave up.

I guess love was blind. Or maybe just stupid

Jay was awesome!! I loved him and how he became fast friends with Huck. I loved him and the relationship between him and Cat.
I think the relationship between Cat and her mother was one of the main points in the book, it helped us uncover Cat bit by bit.
I didn't catch on the chemistry between Huck and Cat at the beginning , but then it was explosive!!!
It's the first time I have read a book by Christine Manzari and it won't be the last time! She succeeded in writing a fresh New Adult Romantic novel. Meeting a strong , independant Cat and finally losing the idea of women who need to be saved.

You have to risk your heart. If you don't, you'll never know the beauty of love

Cat didn't need Huck to save her. She wanted him, his support and love. But she couldn't help herself and she got hooked!

I don’t think this could have been a more aptly titled book because let me tell you I was HOOKED from page one until the very end. It was that good!

Cat or Cate, which ever she is going by, was the perfect amount of snark and sass. I loved her!

“What you need is to spread your wings and trust one of the good guys for once?” “And by wings do you mean legs?” I winked at him.

She was strong, full of life, but unable to trust. Growing up with an alcoholic father really did a number on her. Huck, or Will, is a pretty boy who is determined, hardworking, and doesn’t give up. Huck is not someone that Cat would normally go for, but the two had instant chemistry!

“I hope they set off those freaking fireworks soon because I need to get you as wet as I am right now.”

One night is just not enough as the sparks continue to fly and soon they are spending lots of time together.

“Huck, I’m wearing my f--k-me dress. Don’t let it go to waste.”

But Cat has a lot of rules because she is afraid to open up her heart.
When a big wrench is thrown into their “relationship,” how do they handle it?

You will have to read this book to find out! And you will NOT be disappointed. You will laugh A LOT, swoon, probably cry, and squirm during those sexy times. I LOVED every minute of this book! ~ Tiffany, 5 stars

~~~
So...this book was pleasantly surprising. Which makes me writing about it difficult...because there were a lot of surprises! 20% in and I couldn't get enough. Cat is a tough closed off skater girl and Huck is a dreamy clean-cut guy, who is intrigued and fascinated with her mad skills.
The characters and their chemistry seemed believable. Cat is snarky, quick witted and comedic. She reminded me of myself when it came to letting go of stubbornness and letting people in.
"I'd always worked so hard at being unbreakable that I didn't know how else to live."
The secondary characters were just as real too. Jay, her gay best friend…HILARIOUS! And her sweet, sweet mother. The relationships and banter were perfect.
I would recommend Hooked to a lover of fast paced New Adult reads with twists and 80's movie trivia. ~ Krissy, 4 stars
From start to finish, I was HOOKED on this book. Manzari has a fresh and unique writing style. She writes snarky and hilarious characters, and yet is able to create steam, sexual tension, and deep emotion from them at the same time.
Hooked takes the reader on a journey through the relationship of Cat and Huck. Neither believe they want a relationship with the other, yet each gets more and more HOOKED.
As the story-line progresses and conflicts drive Cat and Huck apart, Manzari weaves in a sensitive and touching story in the relationship between Cat and her mother. Get your tissues ready!
How could I forget Jay? Jay provides fabulous comic relief and is a best friend to Cat and a new friend to Huck. Everyone wants a Jay in their life!
Kudos to Manzari for writing a fantastic New Adult novel. In a time when many romance novels feature weak women looking to be saved, Manzari presents us with a strong, smart, and independent female character. Readers will love Cat because she doesn't need Huck to save her-- but together the two become even better. Get ready to get HOOKED on this book and the writing of Christine Manzari.
I read Hooked roughly over a day in 1 sitting. I don't think I'd read anything by Christine before so it was a new author with no expectations.
I really loved Cat/Cate's character. She was easy to relate too as I shared a fair few personality traits with her along with the same profession (When I first started working) and the tattoos as well. I felt a kin with her and understood the way she was, why she was that way and even her feelings at times too. I adored her mum. Lump in throat there! Huck wasn't totally my type of BBF but he was definitely appealing. I loved the connection the 2 had with each other and Jay made an excellent addition along with Spook too.
The story like many NA books was pretty predictable but this didn't take away from the enjoyment. I liked how the book ended, there was some really hot scenes in there and love that there is a new book this time following on from Huck's brother. 3.5 stars a recommended read if you like a NA romance with some sassy humour but with love, sorrow and great friends thrown in too.
Title: Hooked
Author: Christine Manzari
Publication Date: February 3, 2015
Source: Copy Given by Author and Tour Organizer
ARA'S NOTE:
When I read the blurb I thought that it was nothing I haven't read before. Like a story that would be easy to predict with characters that are nothing short of cliche. Here's what I had in mind:
Leading lady is a woman pretending to be tough but is insecure in reality and likes to be dominated by the leading man. She also doesn't know what she wants to do with her life.
Leading man is a rich but cold and distant ass because he's been hurt before. He's afraid of commitment because of that trauma, and is now a certified playboy.
Laugh at me now Ms. Manzari, because I was obviously very wrong about the awesomeness that you've created. I'm going to share my wonderful experience with you in a bit.
NOTE: There might be a few spoilers.
SYNOPSIS:
If you ask the confident and snarky skater girl, and she’s in the mood to share, she’ll tell you her name is Cat. She might even tell you that she’s hooked on graffiti, 80s movies, and having fun—the riskier the better. Cat will share a good time with you, but she won’t ever trust you enough to share her heart. It’s protected by secrets and she’d like to keep it that way.
Cat knows one thing for certain: Love isn’t really her thing.
If you ask the confident and rich pretty boy, he might tell you his name is Huck. He might even tell you he loves a challenge and is used to getting his way. He won’t tell you that his life is a mess because he risked his heart by trusting the wrong girl. Huck is ready for a change, he just wasn’t ready to get hooked on someone like Cat.
Huck knows one thing for certain: Love hasn’t done him any favors, but Cat just might be worth the risk.
Cat and Huck think a one-night stand seems harmless, but when all the little secrets they didn’t share turn out to be toxic truths, they realize how easily a one-night stand (or a few) could ruin everything.
The thing is, you can be ruined in more than one way. Once you’re HOOKED, what wouldn’t you risk for the chance at more?
CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
Cate "Cat" Maverick a.k.a. Wicked Bitch of the West is a strong, independent, and passionate woman with a what-you-see-is-what-you-get attitude. She does not pretend to be someone she's not and if you don't like her for who she is then it's your problem. She's also secretive and emotionally withdrawn, but when she loves someone, she gives it all her.
Will "Hux" Huxley Stone a.k.a. Shitstick is a complicated man; he's cold, authoritative, and ruthless when it comes to work, but he's funny, passionate, loyal, and...perfect when he takes the suit off. He's always had the same experiences and the same kind of women for years, so he finds Cat a breath of fresh air, and one that he does not want to go without.
TO LOVE:
From the very first page, I already knew that this is not your typical rom-com, and that Cat is exactly my kind of girl. Break down time:
CHARACTERS & CHEMISTRY
Cat and Hux's banter is amazing. Their personalities are different yet the same, and they simply balance each other out. They talk about everything and nothing, they don't know facts about each other, but they feel like they know everything that they shoul, and they're just electric together! Oh, let's not forget about the "ugly chair". *wink*
POV
I've always been a fan of stories with multiple POVs, namely those of the two main characters. I like knowing what they're thinking and feeling, especially the male lead. Experiencing the story through Hux's eyes, mind, and heart is a beautiful thing. His passion and loyaty towards Cat is swoon-worthy, and I was a tad envious of her.
STORY
It was amazing! It was unpredictable and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm not going to delve into the details, but trust me...the story is something you will never forget. FYI, there are no antagonists here, which makes it that much more different.
INTIMATE SCENES
They were hot with a sizzling H. Actually, the sex scenes weren't graphic at all. The D-word, C-word, and P-word weren't mentioned, but it still managed to be very intimate and consuming.
TECHNICAL ASPECT
Hooked was written flawlessly. There were no grammatical errors, no "skipping", every scene was clear and details specific. It was, like I said earlier, flawless.
TO BLEH:
I was left with a few questions: 1st, what was Hux's parents' reaction when he resigned? 2nd, did they accept Cat as Hux's girlfriend? (Especially Dana, considering she was not that fond of Cat.) 3rd, did they accept and support his new career? (His dad wanted him to run the business, not be a photographer.) 4th, what happened to Jay and what's-his-name?
SUMMARY:
I give Hooked 5 stars, no doubt about it. The book was beautifully written, story utterly engaging, characters truly loveable, and the romance wonderfully heart-pounding. U kind of wish there will be a second book though. Even just a short one to tie-off loose ends, maybe? *hopeful smile*
Graphic Designer Cat is a hoot and a half and she alone was worth reading the book, throw in the other characters and you have a story that is not only very funny but will most definitely have you hooked.
A chance encounter, a friendly nudge (or is that a rather ungentlemanly push from a very pushy gay best friend) and you are face to face with someone that just might change your life.
Cat loves nothing more than to hang out – it is when she is happiest just being free and spending time with her friends, especially her bestie Jay. But when the eagle eyed Jay catches her being ogled from a distance by a sexy guy on the beach he cheekily dares her to make the first move.
Well there is one thing for sure, Cat does not back down from a challenge – she fronts it out and makes her introductions… good girl!
But as you may have already guessed, that is the mere precursor to the book, because what they get from that initial hello, is so much more than either of them could have ever imagined.
Playing her cards very close to her chest Cat follows her usual path, divulge as little personal information as possible but make what you have count. They really try and the attraction between them could never be denied but is it a onetime thing or could this possibly have both of them rethinking their plans.
Things gather along at a fairly swift pace after that initial meeting and very soon they are spending a very hot and steamy night together.
But is this the perfect one night stand or is there more fuel left in the tank?
At this point in the book I couldn’t help but get the feeling that there was more to this pair than maybe even they could handle. I wasn’t sure exactly what it was but there was something that almost unnerved me, it was an itch that was forming telling me that they were about to be dealt a hammer blow and I hated it because I wanted them to be Ok, whether they would or not was yet to be seen.
Cat’s mystery man is Huck and sweeping aside his stalkerish tendencies, I have to say I really liked him, not that I didn’t like Cat – I did, but of the two I just preferred Huck.
To be honest if I look at the book as a whole my favourite character was Jay – read it and you will know why!
Cat was what I had expected I think, she was clever, independent and strong – get past the initial introductions etc. and you get a really great indication of just how strong she is when the situation with her mother unfolds, I was blown away by the depth of feeling that the author managed to pack into that whole scenario.
My hankering that their journey was not going to be smooth was right but I would never have guessed why.
The author took a subject that is not only intensely private and very, very sensitive but for far too many families, it is emotionally crippling. Life with and life as someone dealing with Cancer is not something that can be easily handled within the realms of fiction but Christine Manzari – I applaud you because you were respectful when others many have been less so, you handled this with kid gloves in some respects but yet you allowed them and at times their situation to shine.
You gave Cat the grace to express her emotions, to show the world that no matter who you appear to be, being in this situation will level you, it will cut you to the core and make you confront pain you could have never begun to imagine.
If I thought Cat was strong before – I damn well knew she was after reading about the time she spent with her mother.
I’m not neglecting Huck’s story – far from it – he had his own issues to deal with – trying to rebuild his life after the disaster that was his failed relationship to a woman that he adored only to discover that she was far less invested in what they had than he was. Feeling like a fresh start was in order he upped sticks and moved to California.
But his family, his career and his ex, just will not let it go – he is a man of two halves so to speak – suited and booted he is formidable and not to be taken lightly but with Cat in his arms, this man is a everything she could ever need and now he has her he is never going to give her up!, I loved his dedication, his determination and the fact that he had enough consideration and empathy to know when to take a step back and give her time to just be, she had so much on her plate it was beautiful the way he was almost her safety net, just waiting beneath her to catch the pieces when she fell because she was going to fall, no matter how hard she fought it.
I loved the changes that they both made, the evolution that their lives undertook and I also loved the fact that by telling the book from both points of view, I was able to get that excitement and understanding first hand.
A well written and carefully constructed book. It covered topics sensitively and allowed the Huck to be a true hero for his woman, to support her discretely when required but to never leave her unguarded, her heart was always his to protect and he did so willingly.
On paper, Cat and Huck are just too different to work. She’s a tattooed skater girl. He’s an all-American boy. They quickly dub each other Ms. Unafraid and Abercombie. And while they shouldn’t work, don’t tell that to their bodies.
A mutual attraction brings them together, quickly leading to an impulsive first date. While these two steer clear of personal topics like family and work, something that will come back to bite them, they get to know each other and learn they are more compatible than they thought. This builds the attraction and leads to a passionate night that is hard to forget.
“God,” he moaned.
“You can call me Goddess,” I purred back, twinning my legs with his to hold him down onto me.
I rocked her world last night. Or she rocked mine. Did it matter? Worlds were rocked. I was sure of that.
Initially, this book seemed predictable. Since they hid so much personal information, it was no shock to me that Cat and Huck were more than strangers who met on a beach. But I was surprised how quickly Cat forgot about her amazing weekend with Huck, reverting to hatred for the guy she previously only knew over the phone. I understood her fears, and reasons for distancing herself, but she shut down so quickly on Huck, she didn’t give him much chance to remind her why they were great together.
The other thing that surprised me about this book was the heartbreaking element within it. Before everything goes to shit at work, Cat receives sad news from her mom that will impact her daily life, and tore at her already fragile heart. The scenes in this book involving Cat and her Mom are so well captured, you can feel Cat’s heart breaking. I was amazed at the strength Cat shows on the outside, despite her pain on the inside.
Although I supported Cat emotionally, I was frustrated with the walls she built up to avoid letting Huck in. But thankfully, he was a pesky fucker, and broke down some of those walls, on occasion. Only for Cat to ruin things minutes later and rebuild the walls. *shakes kindle*
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate Cat’s character. There was actually a lot I liked about her. She’s an independent, creative and driven – something that is often lacking in book heroines. She’s a bit of a hard ass, which led her to be labeled by some as the Wicked Bitch of the West Coast, but she clearly has a life direction, which I can’t fault her for. She carries a don’t-fuck-with-me attitude which actually explains a lot about her experiences with relationships, creating barriers to her heart. If it weren’t for Huck’s persistence and her BBF, Jay’s, meddling, she probably would be a very lonely cat lady. Did I mention her own cat doesn’t even like her?
With her Mom’s situation, this book has a heavy weight to it. But Jay provides the humor to lighten up just about any moment.
“I’m so proud of you, Cat. You’re amazing and you don’t even realize it.”
“Oh, I totally realize it. I’m always reminding you.”
“You’re right. That’s true. I take it back. You’re such a conceited bitch.”
Everyone needs a friend like him. He also provides emotional support for both Cat and Huck, and gives them both a swift kick in the ass when necessary.
You don’t think you need him, but you do. Your heart has had a taste of happiness and now you’re being a complete idiot.
True, that.
If you are looking for a hate to love romance, where opposites attract, and a persistent male lead will stop at nothing to get his girl, then this your book. You will laugh at times and may shed a tear or two. In the end, Cat will finally open her heart and get everything she deserves back in return. It’s a beautiful thing.
Such a fun and delightful read! Just what I needed! First thing that came to mind when I finished was: "Need to pack my bags and get to Venice Beach! Swing some rings and maybe there'll be another Huck!"
I loved Cat, Huck and Jay aka Cupcake (Cat's gay best-friend) :) The banter between all of them was off the charts!
Cat's a great girl. Smart, funny and unafraid. She didn't have a great past but doesn't let anything deter her from having fun!
"Don't get me wrong, just because I'm stingy with love, that doesn't mean I'm one of those depressed people that hates the world and everyone in it. Quite the opposite. I know all too well that there's a lot of fun to be had in life. As long as you see it for what it is - fun. And I've always been really good at having fun."
Enter Huck, confident, sexy and intriguing. Drop-dead gorgeous. If you want to know whether he wears boxers or briefs, or what his favorite part of his body is... Well, read it and you'll find out. *wink*wink*
Cat, not looking for something more than a one-night stand, and Huck, looking for a change in his life after having loved the wrong girl, soon find themselves on a date.
And let's not forget the banter between them either!
"That was not a f*ck-me dress, that dress was sophisticated and classy."
"True. But pretty much anything you wear begs me to f*ck you."
"What if I wore muddy overalls?"
"I'd want to take a proverbial roll in the hay with you."
"Cute. What about a nun's habit?"
"With a wimple?"
"Of course!"
"I'd be a very bad boy to earn a smack with the ruler then."
"What about sweat pants and a Christmas sweater?"
"More fun to unwrap you."
"What if I was wearing a flannel nightgown?"
"Nightgown are definitely f*ck-me clothes. Easy access and all."
The attraction and chemistry between them is obviously there, Cat can't deny Huck isn't one of those guys she usually hooks-up with.
"I was incapable of denying my body what it wanted. I was incapable of denying Huck what he asked for with each confident touch of his hands and mouth."
Cat and Huck don't share any personal information with each other, so I'm not going into detail of what happened with, between or around them. But just let me tell you that not all secrets remain secrets, so when their real worlds collide...
But what Cat didn't anticipate is that Huck isn't one to give up easily, if she'd only let him in...
"Tell me what's going on in that beautiful head of yours, Cat. Because I like you. I think I've made that pretty clear. I don't want you pulling away again without giving us a chance. I want to know all of those things you keep off-limits. I want you to let me in, and I don't want you to regret any of this."
This was a funny, sweet and sexy story! Highly recommended to all New Adult lovers! I loved it! Looking forward to read more from this author!
I was HOOKED from the first until the very last page!
Cat is every bit her name, feisty, confident and flirty. But she’s been burned too many times and is too busy dealing with her asshole boss to even consider getting into a relationship. However when she acknowledges a sexy, young man named Huck who has been watching her, she decides she could have a little fun. Huck is of another mind though and knows he wants a lot more from Cat but with work, family heart-ache and ex’s causing drama, will these two ever have a chance of being together? Or will life just keep getting in the way?
“Love is a funny thing. Once you decide someone is worthy of it, you have to trust that person not to break you. And some people—most people actually—aren’t worthy of that trust.”
I think I was frustrated with this story because I feel it had the potential to be so much more. It had all the bases there so I did enjoy it, I just didn’t love it like I wish I could have.
“Cat. What a perfect goddamn name for a perfectly wild girl.”
The characters were great, there’s no denying it. Cat was so strong and feisty, I loved her. She was such a great female character, she was in charge of herself and confident. I loved how hard she worked with everything in her life like her family and friends and her work and she was always the strong person there for everyone she cared about.
“What do you need me to say? What do I need to do? I’ve been fighting my way into your heart since the first night I saw you on Venice Beach, but you’re the one that has to let me in. You have to trust me.”
Huck was her perfect balance. He was caring, gentle but still sexy and confident. He wanted to be there for Cat no matter how hard she tried to pull away and I loved that; he knew what he wanted and he was going to get his woman but keeping a mind to to her feelings and wants as well.
“I’m going to prove to you that we’re worth it. Whether you’re forbidden or not, we belong together.”
The plot is where I feel this story was let down a little. Because although there was some great sex scenes and some really heart felt moments I just don’t think they were articulated well. I felt it dragged a little sometimes and I did go through points of wanting to hurry along so I could get to the interesting parts.
This is a story with great potential with characters so likeable that they alone will draw you in. I will definitely keep an eye out for more from this author as I have a feeling her next books will just keep getting better and better.
Hooked was a great story and I would recommend this book to many others. This book is told in dual POV's and has an HEA. I have to say when I decide to read a book by a author that I don't know very well I get excited, Christine Manzari knows how to write her steamy scenes and has a great sense of humor.. she has a way of making you feel like you are apart of the world of her characters. I really enjoyed reading this book about Huck and Kat. Kat is a very strong heroine in this book and doesn't take shit from no one.. Huck is the rich kid who gets what he wants. When there worlds collide it will steam up your kindle and steal your heart. I would rate this book a 4.5 stars!
Kat is a skater girl who loves art and the most important thing to her is her mom, Jay and her job. She wants to make something of herself and her job can take her there.. but she has an asshole boss who she constantly is at war with, but she has never actually met him, he just barks orders to her through email or by phone. Oh and she doesn't do the love thing, one night stands is all she will allow.. When she meets a stranger on venice beach where she hangs out she finds herself instantly attracted to him and finds his name Huck to be even more interesting.. but with a few bold questions as a meet and greet she will walk away... but that won't be the end for them.
Huck is a rich boy and he has just moved to California to run his company locally, he used to do this from far away and life has a way of making changes he wasn't sure he was ready for. But when he sees a girl on the beach who by his standards isn't what he would normally go for.. he finds himself instantly wanting to get to know her better, there first meeting is not the most conventional way of getting to know each other but it leaves Huck salivating for more.
When they find themselves giving into to there passion, a twist will ruin everything.. secrets will ruin everything.. life itself and sadness will wedge its way into there world.. but can they overcome the road blocks??.. Will the passion they created have them hooked or will it sink?
You have to pick up this book, you will love the characters.. you will get emotional are you panties will be soiled with want! Loved this book and can't wait to see what else this author can give us. Thanks for a great story and look forward to so much more in the future. I have become a huge fan!
Hooked was a very fun and refreshing read. This is the first book I have ever read by Christine Manzari and it definitely won't be my last. I loved the connection between Cat, Huck and Jay.
Cat is a smart witty girl who just likes to have fun. She works in a media firm as a graphic designer. When she is not at work she loves to go to the beach and to the skate park. One evening Cat and her best friend Jay are at the beach and Jay notices a guy staring at Cat. She isn't interested in a relationship but does enjoy a good time with a hot guy. Jay triple dog dares her to go up and talk to the mystery guy. She asks him a few questions but doesn't reveal anything about herself. She tells him that she will be at the skate park the next morning if he is interested in learning more about her. They decide to go to lunch together and ask each other more question but they never reveal any personal information. Things between them heat up quickly and they end up spending a hot night together. Cat decides she enjoys spending time with Huck and wants to get to know him better. What will happen when Cat and Huck's real worlds collide? Will she still want him in her life or will she run from him as fast as she can?
Huck is looking for some positive changes in his life. He was involved with a woman that he loved but she didn't feel the same way about him. He is very attracted to Cat and loves spending time with her. When tragedy strikes in Cat's life she tries to push him away but he isn't going away so easily. He will do anything to prove to Cat that he truly cares for her and that they can be in a happy relationship and it doesn't matter what other people think. Will he be able to get through to Cat or will he end up alone and miserable again?
"Tell me what's going on in that beautiful head of yours, Cat. Because I like you. I think I've made that pretty clear. I don't want you pulling away again without giving us a chance. I want to know all of those things you keep off-limits. I want you to let me in, and I don't want you to regret any of this."
I really enjoyed the witty banter between the characters. I loved the secondary characters and feel they added lots of depth to the storyline. I look forward to reading more from Christine
* I received a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review. *
I was definitely "Hooked" on this book right from the very start! I loved the story, the characters, the plot and the setting used in the book. The author grabs you and doesn't release you from the very start and she keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout the entire story. There are twists, turns, loops and curves that the reader couldn't begin to imagine and the author does all of this with a breakneck speed. The story flows so smoothly that the reader never sees the next twist until it has already happened. There was no way to predict what Author Christine Manzari will do next in this story!
Cat and Huck, Will and Cate, Shitstick and the Wicked Bitch of the West Coast....the characters that are in this story will leave you laughing, crying and wanting more. Jay is also an important part of this story and may be the readers favorite right from the very start. As the reader delves into the story they will love, hate and love all of the characters at least once while wanting them to be their best friends in real life. The author makes the characters likable, real and fun. She has a banter between them that is without a doubt a conversation that everyone has had with their friends at some point throughout their lives. She makes the reader want to be friends with all of them and the reader can't help but want them to have a happily ever after life.
The story is a fun read that will also leave the reader wanting to spend the weekend in Venice Beach. They can easily picture themselves there with friends. The story will leave the reader wanting to spend more time with the characters and they will think about all of them and the story long after they have finished reading. This was my first book by Author Christine Manzari, but it will not be my last! I enjoyed everything about the story from start to finish. She has a unique story and a fun one too!
Make sure you add this story to your TBR list! You won't be sorry for a minute! Enjoy this one - It's a fun, fast moving read!
This review and more on So Bookalicious
Hooked is really the right title fort his book because from the very first page I was hooked. Once I started reading there was no way that I could put it down. Hooked is a fun read and overall it was light but it also touches on a heavier topic. And once I finished it I was left wanting more of Huck and Cat.
Cat was a great female lead. She was strong and independent. And she was not the typical beautiful girl. Yes she was beautiful but also kind off a tomboy, she loves skateboarding and hanging out with the guys. She will never pretend to be someone else in order to get a guy, what you see is what you get. All Cat want is to have a good time and I loved her spunk. But cat also has her problems she does not let anyone get close enough to her to protect herself. If no one gets close to her than she cannot get hurt. The only ones who really now her are her best friend Jay and her mother. That is until she meets Huck.
Huck was another great character. He is starting a new life for himself in California after his last relationship ended horribly. So the last thing he expected to find is Cat. Huck is a funny guy there were multiple times in this book that I cracked up. He is also very determined once he sees something that he wants he goes after it and he will not give up no matter how hard it is. His determination certainly helped him with Cat. But at the same time he also knows when he has to give someone the space that they need. So he was a really amazing guy.
The book may sound predictable but it was that heartbreaking element that the author put into the book that gave it that little extra. Cat is going through a hard time and it was not easy to see her suffer through it all alone. Since she is such a strong character you know that she will be fine in the end, especially with the help of her friends and Huck, but it was still heartbreaking.
Overall I quiet enjoyed Hooked. The characters were well developed and they worked well together. The book read easy and I kept turning page after page. The story contained heartbreak but all the funny scenes made sure that the book did not become too depressing. I cannot wait to read more books by this author.
"Hooked". Aptly named as I was hooked after the first chapter. Christine Manzari can certainly turn a phrase and paint a picture with the words she puts to paper. Be it the exchanges between Cat and love (or lust) interest, Huck, as they get to know each other or her relationship with bestie, Jay, Manzari's words pulled me along at a blistering pace as I chuckled, sighed and suffered with the characters she brought to life. The interaction between best friends, Cat and Jay, was P*E*R*F*E*C*T. The story contained scene after scene of biting banter that speaks of the camaraderie of a longtime friendship between two people who truly love and trust each other. Jay was the perfect friend. Funny, attentive, concerned, smart enough to know what Cat needs and strong enough to tell her. Everyone needs a Jay. Cat was an interesting mix. She was funny and smart - a woman who was comfortable in her own skin and not afraid to tell it like it is but vulnerable at the same time. Who can resist a woman like that? Cat's progression toward a relationship with Huck was just as entertaining. Her "twenty questions" type interrogation of Huck was hilarious and actually a good idea for getting to know someone. Unfortunately, she should have asked twenty-one questions. Oops!
The book was not all humor and heat however. Real life, emotionally brutal situations reared their ugly heads and had me crying into my pillow with the emotions it elicited from me. We don't expect it or desire it but, in life, bad sh** happens. Cat handled it in true 'Cat' fashion - with an amazing strength that belied the inner turmoil she was going through. Beautiful. I loved "Hooked"!
On a side note, "Thank you, Christine, for the "Dr. Who" mention. It tickled this Whovian's funny bone."
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
From the first page Hooked by Christine Manzari was light and fun. Once I started reading it there was no way I was putting it down until I was finished. I must admit I wanted more at the end of the book but for me once I enjoy a story I never want the character's story to end. I hope Christine sees this and thinks about giving us a little more Cat and Huck or even a story about Cat's best friend Jay.
Characters:
Cat was a different type of female lead. She didn't have the typical long blonde hair and blue eyes I read about often. She was a woman with tattoo's, who skates and isn't afraid of being herself. Cat or Cate is fun, outspoken and basically did whatever she wanted. Cat doesn't let anyone get close to her but her best friend Jay. One night Cat walks over to Huck to inquiry about his stalking abilities and the rest is history.
Huck always found something interesting about Cat and he couldn't stop staring. I enjoyed Huck's character. He was also funny and when he found something he wanted he went after it hard.
Both of their worlds collide and both Cat and Huck must find a way to cope with what faith has thrown them. Huck isn't ready to give up on Cat and Cat is a stubborn, feisty girl.
Overall, I enjoyed Hooked. The characters worked well together, it was an easy read as I didn't feel like the story dragged. All the characters had me laughing and some point or another with their antics. Christine did a great job and it showed through her writing.
I will definitely recommend Hooked to anyone looking or a light and romantic read.
Hooked is a fun read that will leave you in tears of laughter and heartache.
The couple in the story is Cat and Huck; they meet one day while hanging out at the beach. They have a very passionate night together, but the next day Cat insists they go their separate ways. Little does she know that’s not so easy when she learn Huck’s true identity and that they’ll be spending more time together.
I liked Cat from the very beginning. I loved how she was a bit of a tomboy, who loved to skateboard and spray paint graffiti on the walls at Venice Beach. She definitely comes across as a tough person, but beyond that exterior she’s someone who’s been hurt in the past and that’s why she keeps people at bay. My heart went out to Cat when I learned what she experienced in the past with her father, plus having to deal with the illness of her mother. Throughout the book, we see Cat trying to hold it together, but soon her emotions give way.
As for Huck, at the beginning I didn’t connect with his character much, but as soon as I learned his real identity, that’s when his personality started to show. I liked how he was supposed to be a straight-laced businessman, yet Cat taught him how to have fun. My favorite moments in the book are when he’s spending time with Cat and her friend, Jay. Speaking of Jay, he was my favorite character in the book and he brought out the humor as he acted as a go-between for Cat and Huck.
Despite the humor from Jay, there are a lot of sad moments in Hooked where you learn about Cat and Huck’s secrets. You’ll find yourself getting emotional as they break down and face the hard truths of their lives.
Overall, this is a great story that’s emotionally gripping, yet provides light-hearted humor along the way. If you’re a fan of these types of stories, then Hooked is the book for you.
I didn't care about any of the characters, and furthermore didn't even LIKE a single character. Cat is an emotionally immature woman who needs to do a lot of self reflection on her abandonment issues brought on by her father. It's never addressed that her fears of being vulnerable with Huck are a trauma response and how unhealthy that is. Jay is a terrible best friend who doesn't understand boundaries. PRETENDING TO BE DRUNK AND PASSED OUT IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET HER TO SLEEP WITH A GUY WHO SHE HAS BEEN CLEAR SHE DOES NOT WANT TO BE WITH??? THAT'S SO MESSED UP. It doesn't matter how she feels deep down, Cat had been continually saying that she didn't want to be in a relationship with her boss. Jay ignores this and insists he knows better, and constantly hatches schemes to get Huck and Cat together throughout the book. And Huck. No regard for what Cat wants, only what he wants, and what he wants is Cat. He doesn't ever ask Cat, he tells her that she wants him. She does internally, but externally she says she doesn't. AND HE DOES NOT RESPECT THAT! He's very lucky that Cat never tried to get him in trouble bc she absolutely could have if she wanted to. She would have had every right to get him fired for his behavior. (Side note: it's honestly really weird that his name turns him on so much...) As for the plot, this was the most all over the place book I've ever read. I feel like the author was just making it up as she went along, and that got old SO QUICK! I had to literally force myself to finish this book and wanted to give up so many times but I needed to stick it out as a favor to a friend. This book is the quality of a wattpad story.
Ok I feel really bad now for ripping this book to shreds, I hope someone else really loves this book!!! Sorry Christine Manzari, if you're reading this. It just wasn't my cup of tea!
Reviewed on Behalf of Give Me Books
I don’t think this could have been a more aptly titled book because let me tell you I was HOOOKED from page one until the very end. It was that good!
Cat or Cate, which ever she is going by, was the perfect amount of snark and sass. I loved her! “What you need is to spread your wings and trust one of the good guys for once?” “And by wings do you mean legs?” I winked at him. She was strong, full of life, but unable to trust. Growing up with an alcoholic father really did a number on her. Huck or Will, is a pretty boy who is determined, hardworking, and doesn’t give up. Huck is not someone that Cat would normally go from, but the two had instant chemistry! “I hope they set off those freaking fireworks soon because I need to get you as wet as I am right now.” One night is just not enough as the sparks continue to fly and soon they are spending lots of time together. “Huck, I’m wearing my fuck-me dress. Don’t let it go to waste.” But Cat has a lot of rules because she is afraid to open up her heart.
When a big wrench is thrown into their “relationship,” how do they handle it? Will Cat finally let someone in or does she continue to shut people out. She can only count of her mom and Jay, her gay bestie who is the bestest friend a person could ask for. And when an emergency happens with her mom, how does she handle it? Who does she turn to?
You will have to read this book to find out! And you will NOT be disappointed. You will laugh, A LOT, swoon, probably cry, and squirm during those sexy times. I LOVED every minute of this book! ( 5 stars)
So freaking good! I guess you could say I was Hooked😉 I absolutely loved Cat's character and Huck was perfectly swoon-worthy 😍 Jay is an incredible character and the plot line kept me on the edge of my seat.
There was so much more depth in this book than one would expect from an NA or romance novel but I was intensely pleased with this story and look forward to reading more of the series😃
Cat has the kind of life many young women would be jealous of. She is a graphic designer, skateboarder, graffiti artist and has a gay BFF. She is also beautiful, feisty and doesn’t believe in love! Instead of ignoring the guy who spends the morning watching her workout she agrees to a date. We cannot help but miss the fact that despite Huck’s obvious stalker tendencies, the atmosphere between the pair is sexually charged.
As the we read further Christine Manzari changes the tone of the story. We realise that this is not going to be a straightforward love story and that Cat and Huck are going to have to deal with their own drama before they can finally be together.
Generally a character with Cat’s tough exterior be difficult to connect with, but Christine Manzari allows us to see her confusion, anger, denial and grief as she cares for her mother. Christine Manzari is sensitive, yet clearly knowledgeable about cancer, its treatment and the resulting side effects; because of this we invest our emotions in the story.
Hooked’s narrative incorporates both character’s points of view, helping us to understand their individual feelings and motivations. Whilst Cat is pre-occupied with her mother’s illness, Huck simply wants to convince her that he is genuine, but I think that he seems fairly one-dimensional.
Hooked is a promising debut from the author and it is a book which will be popular with readers of the New Adult Contemporary Romance genre.
