Welcome to the Gallery, where powerful beings enjoy peace, quiet, and the company of each other, where they are free to love as they choose, be it one, many, or anything in between.
The Permanent Collection comprises those paintings which never leave the Gallery. The beings within these paintings have bargained with the Curator to stay on forever in return for gifting him their powers, resources, or knowledge. They help the Curator in running the Gallery, and provide sustenance for the Curator.
Today's featured pieces The Assistant, about a lonely, misunderstood young man and the unusual new job he is offered by the mysterious curator; The Tycoon is about a rough and powerful man who went missing several years ago, and has every intention of remaining so; Three Kings once walked away from their kingdoms, and now spend their days with each other; The Bastard Son is about a man who once fled betrayal and heartache, and now uses his deadly skills and famous sword to defend the Gallery. And in The Demon Slayer, an angel arrives to find the gallery under attack, and soon one demon is slain while another falls...
Megan is a long time resident of queer romance and keeps herself busy reading and writing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her wife and cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers and can be found all over the internet.
A relatively loose string of sex scenes with different and recurring partners. No exclusivity or love relationships, if you like. They are all beings who deal freely with their sexual desires and find their home with like-minded partners. At the same time, it is a fantasy story with an interesting setting. I wish there was more of this and maybe a tiny bit less sex? Oh well, it is what it is and certainly doesn't want to be anything more.
He reached up and removed his fancy silk tie, turned Rex roughly around, and bound his wrists with it. Turing him back around, Laurence pushed Rex to his knees and settled back in his chair. "Now, my little pet, show me just how talented that mouth of yours can be. I've seen you with the others—show me why they moan and beg and use you like the sweetest little slut ever born." 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Finally, finally they took pity on him, working together, thrusting in turns, stretching him wide, overstimulating him to the point of screaming. Rex didn't last long before he was coming between them, burying his hoarse cries in the hollow of Laurence's throat. Still they continued, the evil bastards, until he came again, and finally was followed by them—Silenus coming deep inside him, Laurence pulling out at the last to shoot come all over Rex's face and chest. 🤤🤤🤤
this was a short and enjoyable collection of interlinked fantastical and deeply erotic short stories. i really liked the overall concept of little pocket universes within the paintings in a gallery. there is an emphasis on the erotic, with the galley being run by a satyr and his incubus apprentice (assistant?). i especially liked the arthurian story with mordred - he's one of my favourite characters in the arthurian canon and i'm always thirsty for more stories about him, especially ones in which he's the protagonist and very, very gay.
I was hoping for steamy, and steamy I got! I found the first few stories to be a bit better fleshed out (pun intended) than the last couple, but overall I really appreciated how well-written the stories were.
I did wish the blurb had been a little clearer that all the stories would be mm -- I had the impression that some might include females as well, so it was a little disappointing when none of the stories had any female interactions.
Badass female character score = 0/5 -- there weren't any women doing anything, so nobody to rate.
Thank you to NetGalley and Less Than Three Press for a free electronic ARC of this novel, received in exchange for an honest review.
I get asked about the Gallery stories alot, so I have cleaned up the old ones, added new ones, and here ye be. I have a lot of fun with these, and it's probably not hard to the see the Petshop of Horrors influence/inspiration - though my stories are significantly happier and pornier ^^;
I quite liked the main character of the first story, Rex the Incubus, and I also really liked the concept of him introducing us to the other inhabitants of the gallery. I will say, however, that the encounters were a bit shorter than what I am used to, and I would have liked to see more of the Three Kings and Lawrence and his Biker Angel. I am happy though to see that it is only the first volume in the series, so I hope my curiosity will be satisfied. I really like the idea behind it all, and it is written in typical Megan Derr style, so if you like her short stories, you will most assuredly like this book. (It is really explicit, however, unlike some of her short stories. This is an Art Gallery overseen by a satyr and an incubus, so do the math :P ) It is lovely, and I will be waiting for the second volume, whenever it may come!
A collection of short stories focused more on sex and kink. First story is an intro to Rex the incubus and the gallery, the following two being more Rex with different paintings. I liked the tycoon. Then its a pre-Rex story lovers spat and finished with my favourite story of Lawrence and Rathan.
This story has more sex than the average story by Derr does, but it does so without becoming a drag to the story. In fact, with the particulars of this story it is more of a centralized focus that brings about the motivations and history of the characters that are introduced. After all, the story in part focuses around Rex as the main character who introduces and meets all of the others. While sex is central to so many of these stories it does not cheapen the love or relationships introduces, instead showing it to be a part of the lives of the inhabitants of this world. A beautiful story that weaves through a magical world and the touching pasts of well known and less well known characters this was an enjoyable collection of stories!
I would say this is all my fault for not having read the blurb but the blurb doesn't give much info on the pairings and unfortunately for me I'm not one for poly pairings and open relationships so 4 out of the 5 stories didn't work for me and I skimmed... ALOT!!
The one I enjoyed was The Bastard Son which was a new and interesting spin on Arthur's story, with Mordred being the bastard son of Arthur and not evil as most often portrayed! I wish the story was a bit longer so that the transaction from "enemies" to lovers between Lancelot and Mordred was smoother and a bit more info given on the plot that separated them originally.
On to the next part of The Gallery that I think will be more my speed... I hope!
Neither loved or hated it. Liked the concept and the storylines of the individual short stories compliled within, but wished that the characters had been expanded just that little bit more. The writing was good though. A little heavy on the smuttiness of it all, but not really complaining, merely stating.
Though this contains several short stories, they are all connected (most featuring Rex) and work best as one read. I am a huge fan of Megan Derr's works, but didn't have high expectations of this book. And yes, there are many works by her I like better, but it was still a very good read. I would classify it as easy erotica. 3.5 stars
What an excellent belated birthday present to myself. I could happily read stories in this universe for ages, and will eagerly await (and pre-order!) any and all new installments. (Hopefully more than one? Fingers crossed!)
Nice concept and full of imagination - a true Derr. A word of caution, though: it's surprisingly kinky for the author! But I enjoyed it - a lot! - and I am looking forward to the next book in what promises to be a steamy series ...
Well, that was certainly different. This was a series of short, but interconnected stories featuring an variety of supernatual beings. It’s not your typical romance and to call this collection “erotica” would be a vast understatement.
This was an interesting reading to say the least! Not as much developmwnt as I would have liked but it served the purpose. I'm totally reading the next book!
I found myself chuckling at the extreme characters Rex encountered in Silenus' gallery, and of course, immediately became immersed in their interestingly varied situations and really hot intimate scenes. Well written and thought out, I am, as always, impressed by Derr's creative genius.
Both The Gallery stories are a series of short stories that revolve around the mysterious gallery where no painting is just a painting and no exibition is the same. The first book The Permanent Collection is set not only around a serie of paintings that are a permanent fixture in the Gallery - for different reasons - it’s also about how the Gallery gained an assistant and an introduction of sorts.
The second book: The Special Exhibits is also a series of short stories, but this time they are more kinky. It isn’t called the Special Exhibit for nothing!
The stories in The Gallery started life in some form on the author’s website, but have been adapted in the form of a novel and extended and added too. I admit I didn’t read the stories on the website, so I went into both stories without prior knowledge or expectations.
I loved both books, but The Permanent Collection was my favorite. I liked how Rex came to work for the Gallery and how he is a fixture in almost all the stories in the book. The stories were all very well crafted and very sexy, but they aren’t just erotica, there is a story to it as well and I love how that was balanced. The stories are very imaginative witht the Gallery as the central setting. The Special Exibits was also a lovely book. It’s a good continuation of the series, but I did miss the red line the first book had. The stories are nicely done, but a lot more kinky than the the first book, though they are just as sweet.
Sometimes it is nice to read that is alright to be different. The writing on both books is good and solid, like we know and have come to expect from the author. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.
