I had no idea a Marvel audiobook could be this much fun, but I guess this showed me!

As an audio experience I loved the full cast reading and sound effects, though from time to time the repetitive background score got to be irritating. Apart from that, great work from all concerned and I'm pretty sure I have a new Audio Addiction thanks to this one.

This is a pretty good Avengers story, but not great. I could never quite get a handle on whether it was supposed to fit in with the cinematic or the comics chronology. The team has to face five individual threats before finally coming together (pardon me, of course I meant to say -Assembling!-), to take down the final, controlling Big Bad. The characters seemed to be pretty true for the most part, but it all seemed just a little too formulaic to be really satisfying.

3.5 stars All of the bad guys get the same message from an unknown source to, as it says, take over the world. The Avengers scatter all over the world in response to the threats, each confronting an enemy who is determined to take advantage of the situation, even one not of their own making. Abnett is good at keeping all threads straight, even if the story itself feels a bit scattered at first.

Decent read.

I have listened to a couple of the Marvel prose novels that were adapted by GraphicAudio. I highly recommend them as they are excellent full cast audio productions. Those were based on specific Marvel events (like Civil War), but this one didn’t appear to come from any specific comic storyline. I own this on audio, but decided to try reading it first.

The story throws the reader right into the action. Some “bad guys” walk into an officer building to collect a special order they’ve made – and kill everyone in the conference room. The leader is none other than Baron Strucker and Cap is hot on his trail. The book then jumps to Tony Stark trying to avert a global catastrophe when Ultron rises again. The book skips among each of the Avengers dealing with separate “Alpha level” events. Global communications are down, so they can’t communicate with each other. But why are all the supervillains suddenly determined to rule the world right now?!

The first half of the book is fairly chaotic and the action is nearly non-stop at break neck speed. The POV changes every chapter. This was a bit frustrating at first, but suited the nature of the story. Around the mid-point, the Avengers finally begin getting the upper hand in their situations and can communicate again. It quickly becomes apparent that someone is orchestrating these crises.

What I loved about this book was that the author assumes the reader is familiar with the characters, either from comics or film, and dives right in. The characterizations are not limited to film or comics, and the story stands alone. The Avengers featured are the line-up from the recent Age of Ultron film, but their powers and personalities hue more to the comics and SHIELD is still active. Dr. Strange is mentioned but doesn’t appear.

One thing I did not like about the book is the price - these Marvel novels are ridiculously overpriced. The retail is $24.99, but these are very short books. The product page says 304 pages, but that is with a slightly larger font, bigger margins and a smaller format hardcover. The actual length is probably more like a long novella - I read it in one evening. I actually like the physical design, but these should retail at $17.00 like YA novels do.

Overall, I loved this book and look forward to more of these novels as a way to expand my enjoyment of the Marvel Universe, but recommend that price conscious shoppers wait for mass market or buy it used. Highly recommended.

Dlatego zajęło mi to tyle czasu.

I'm a huge fan of the MCU, and while I wasn't expecting this novelization to be serious literature, I did expect a little more than I got. The Avengers spent the majority of the story apart, which was unfortunate considering this was an Avengers book. Known for sweeping dramatics, superhero stories and comics should pack a little more punch, and this story was just a little underwhelming. Even the battle at the end was not exciting and I couldn't wait to finish so I could move on to something else.

The writing was decent, but I do have one pet peeve about the style - who the heck uses the word "squirt" to mean "send information over the internet?" I could have handled it once, but it happened multiple times, and it made me uncomfortable every single time. I realize that's not a big deal, but it did bug me.

Overall, this was an average novelization of the popular Avengers, and if you're eager to read everything you can get your hands on, Avengers-wise, it might be worth your time. Otherwise, you might want to pick something else.

The title of this book is fairly literal in context to the story. The plot sees the Avengers dealing with multiple high level threats across the globe, simultaneously. We have Iron Man fighting Ultron in DC, Captain America dealing with Hydra in Berlin, Hawkeye and Black Widow attempting to contain AIM in the Savage Land, Bruce Banner going against the High Evolutionary in Madripoor, and finally Thor and Scarlet Witch in a struggle against the Dread Dormammu in Siberia.
Obviously something is going on that has resulted in all these villains making a play for the globe at the same time. The Avengers need to discover what it is and put a stop to it.

This is not a literary masterpiece but sometimes you just want a trashy novel and the escapism those books afford you. In those terms this is a 4* book all day. I liked the delivery of each individual strand of the story they often felt too short and that's a criticism of the whole book it could have been 50-100 pages longer and I doubt I would have noticed.

Disclaimer: you will need a prior knowledge of the avengers and their enemies as this relies on a prior knowledge of that.

Good but not great. I love my AVENGERS but sheesh. This wasn't captivating.
Basically all of the bad guys received the same message from an unknown source to take over the world and the Avengers jump into action to save the world but from different parts of the world and also in space.

The Graphic Audio full cast did a great job, but the story was a little too disjointed for me. It comes in assuming you already know the characters, their abilities and backstories, and the major villains in the Marvel Universe. There is no lead-up, just fight scene after fight scene for the majority of the story. Still, the exposition parts of the book were done well, even if the ending seemed pretty contrived.

Graphic Audio’s latest instalment in its Avengers series is a rather peculiar choice when weighing up what one would normally expect and want from earth’s mightiest heroes. You get all the classic Avengers – Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Then on the back of the more recent (for the time) premier of Avengers: Age of Ultron, naturally the title seeks to cash in on the respective debuts of the Vision, Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver.

If there was any doubt on that front, it’s well and truly put to bed with the additional appearances of Baron Von Strucker, and a nice scene at the end where Natasha says “hey big guy” and tries to calm the Hulk down. Apparently, this is her thing now.

Yes we’re definitely cashing in. You know it, I know it, Graphic Audio knows it but you know what? That’s okay. These are all Avengers characters, it’s an Avengers book, and it’s actually kind of nice to see characters like Wanda Maximoff, for so long a major part of the team’s history, start to bob up and become significant.

And this title certainly doesn’t want for new additions from the Marvel Universe. In addition to the previously mentioned, we get Mephisto, the High Evolutionary, AIM and Hydra surface again, + we also get the Supreme Intelligence and Kree pulling the strings as the main antagonists. Yep, we have all the makings of an action packed adventure, with new characters, unlikely team ups, stories that progressively develop before tying back into a main plot line… And the end result?

Well, is this really an Avengers story? Yes the characters are there but the essence of the Avengers is that a group of super heroes combine to manage threats that no one hero could alone. And what we get here is Captain America off in Berin dealing with Strucker/Hydra, Iron Man fighting Ultron, the Hulk trying to avert a gamma radiation threat with the High Evolution in Madripoor, Widow and Hawkeye undertaking a seek and destroy mission against AIM in the Savage Land, and finally you have Thor and Wanda starting in Serbia but ending up in goodness knows where, up against Dormmammu.

This type of adventure presents several significant challenges to cohesive story telling.

1: these “alpha level threats” as in end of the world scenarios, are all being handled by either or 2 heroes… which is kind of a contradiction to the terminology used and also the essence of the story.

2: to accommodate the less powerful characters, the severity of the threats has to shift rather dramatically so that the characters involved can be useful. Captain America and Hydra are involved in essentially a hold the world ransom bomb scare (though it’s more a gas thing) that ends by Strucker essentially getting beaten up. Alternatively Hawkeye and Widow’s angle sees them getting on a plane and flying away. Conversely, Thor and Wanda are trying to stop Dormmammu from shifting the planet to a different realm, whilst Banner is confronted with a proper radioactive apocalyptic type situation juxtaposed with the potential for him to be cured of being the Hulk.

Putting it bluntly… I’m not interested in the Cap/Hawkey/Widow’s stories. These aren’t the real stories with the major stakes. Certainly not in comparison to what else is going on. Don’t get me wrong, they’re well written, suspenseful, not boring by any means… but this isn’t the threat, and we all know it.

So you have two mediocre threats and the 2 really serious ones with Iron Man shooting lasers with Ultron in the middle.
Actually, all things considered, in the context of the overall story – that the Kree/Supreme Intelligence gave the ultimatum for someone to take over and control our reckless ways… I don’t know that Ultron, a character whose purpose is to destroy all human/organic life quite fits the bill for what is needed in this story anyway but that’s probably beside the point.

It is nice to have some different pairings I guess. Thor and Wanda in particular work well together but that’s really best in terms of compliments you’ll get from me here.

So you have these 5 disjointed stories that serve to essentially separate the main characters with the running theme being that the heroes can’t communicate with each other hence we have few hours of individualism before they realise everything is linked… a plot line I don’t really get because us as the viewer get peppered with clues and tell tale signs that this is what’s happening.

Without foresight, there’s no real way to figure out who the ultimate antagonist is and when the heroes do all ultimately get together, the threat is revealed by the Kree essentially just announcing themselves. I guess it helped with some plotlines but… meh

Unfortunately the Kree threat with the Supreme Intelligence is almost the most lacklustre one of them all. Aliens and spaceships!!?? The heroes just go up there and essentially blast/smash their way through… so you kind of wait nearly 5 hours to get to this point, and it feels like this threat is over in about 30min with the end result absolutely never in doubt.

But the most baffling and frustrating aspect of all… is the philosophy of the entire threat being completely undersold. The Kree want to take over Earth to reduce the threat that humans, especially the super powered beings present to the universe. They talk about how the humans are overpowered, cruel, don’t fix the problems of their planet, pollute, torture, kill, and have way too much power.
Captain America’s response – “you underestimate our ability to police our own”… Umm what?. No you can’t. We can’t. They’re 100% correct. Rather than have all this righteous, we’re humans and how great are we infuriating dialogue… we really missed the essence of the real story here. Tony Stark kind of touches up on this by pointing out that the team once again essentially uses violence to solve another problem… which is kind of the point.

I’m actually really struggling to see why I shouldn’t be hoping for the Kree to win. Seriously, look at the state of the planet. The world is a mess. Here’s the real story and philosophical debate but alas the opportunity for real discussion in this story was missed.

All things considered, this very much has the feel of an average episode in a great series feel to it ala Game of Thrones… it’s not great compared to the better Graphic Audio Productions, but an average episode of Game of Thrones is still good TV. This was a crappy disjointed story, it had no great philosophy around it, it lacked the Avengers feel, and the dialogue really suffered as a result. Alternatively, the action was fantastic, it was exciting with new characters and different pair ups. This gets 2 stars out of 5.

Cracking read

A great read. This is a superhero saga without pretentiousness, that offers a roller coaster of action and adventure. That is not to say it is silly, or without subtlety and substance, simply that it leaps head first into a colourful genre and provides thrills on a titanic scale.

Before we begin, let me say that I am NOT a professional book reviewer. I just enjoy reading and sharing my thoughts about them. I also have no sense of what a spoiler is, so read at your own risk. I cuss like a sailor, too.

So, I've had this book for a while now because I really enjoy the MCU. I've recently caught up with the movies and decided I would finally read this and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed this book, too. The author did a good job of keeping the Avengers in character. There were a couple spots that were hard for me to read simply because, instead of writing one sentence, the author broke up a sentence into multiple sentences. I don't know if that makes sense? Basically, it felt like the two sentences should be combined into one because the stop between them made me pause and broke my immersion a bit.

One of the first things that threw me for a loop was where Hawkeye and Widow landed. When Hawkeye fought fucking dinosaurs, I lost my shit. Since when did Marvel have dinosaurs?! I had to stop and look up the Savage Land and dinosaurs in Marvel because I was losing my mind lmao

{"What did he want?" asked Fury.
"Ultron? He wanted to rule the world."
"Everybody wants to rule the world."}

He said it! He said the thing! I don't know why but I felt so excited when I read this part haha

{"How'd you get the A.I.M guy to talk?" asked Fury.
"Arrows are pointy," replied Hawkeye.}

I felt like I was watching one of the movies, man. Their lines are brilliant and perfectly in character. This is one of my favorite lines because I actually laughed at this (which helped because I was suffering high anxiety at the time.)

{The sentries had brought star systems to their knees.
But the Hulk... was the Hulk.}

Not gonna lie, I snorted at this one. The truth of this is just so on point that it's hilarious. Also #HulkSavesTheDay.

{"You want to do this or shall I?" he asked.
"Be my guest," said Cap.
"I think it's your turn," said Stark.
"Just do it," Cap said.
"It should come from you," said Stark. "It sounds better coming from you."
"Gentlemen..." growled Fury.
Stark smiled and nodded to Cap.
"Okay," said Captain America. "Avengers... assemble."}

Fucking iconic, bro. I want to see these two in a movie fighting over who should say it. Has this happened? I hope so. I didn't really like how he added the speaking tags after each line. It feels unnecessary after the first time because we know it's them speaking. This happens a lot throughout the book to the point where I kind of stopped reading them lol Unless the character did something other than just saying it, I ignored the speech tags.

Another thing that was hard to read in this book was the placement of the sentences. Typically, when you write something like [Cap looked at her.] and then you have him speak, it would be on the same line, right? But it's not. It goes like this:

{Cap looked at her.
"We know where he went?" he asked.}

When this happens, it feels like a character break, as if the baton is being passed on to the next character but then it's still him. This happens a lot through this book and my dumbass brain had trouble keeping up with it because I expected the next character to be speaking only for it to be the previous character so I had to re-read it.

{Cap and Iron Man looked at each other.
"Your turn," said Iron Man.
"I did it last time."
Tony Stark sighed.
"Okay," he said. He turned toward the others. He turned toward the others. "Avengers?" he called. "Guess what I'm going to say next."}

Overall, this book was pretty awesome. Then again, I'm a bit biased because, like I said, I love the MCU - and yes, I know the MCU is technically just the movies and TV shows but I'm including the other media because MU doesn't sound as cool. One thing I kept trying to figure out was where this book fit into the Marvel timeline and if it did at all.

Now, I've never read the comics (aside from Deadpool) and I've only seen the movies and some of the shows which I know doesn't cover the entire universe. I'm really interested to learn the timeline of all Marvel content, including the books and comics, too. It seems like this book would be somewhere in the middle of the timeline, before Infinity War. But... it's been a while since I've seen the movies at the beginning and doesn't Pietro die in the same movie he appears in? In the book, he is alive and well and very much a part of the Avengers. This was confusing to me.

I guess that kind of comes along with the territory, though. When you have a universe that is so damn vast and you have all these people coming together to make content for the same characters, it makes sense that some of the information wouldn't line up. I wish the full timeline of Marvel was in order and made sense but I know that's not the case and is probably impossible to accomplish, especially now. One can dream though.

I definitely recommend this book if you love Marvel or even if you just love superheroes.

The Avengers: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Writer : Dan Abnett

Publisher : Titan Books

First Titan edition : April 2018

Avengers created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

There is a race, there is a competition among many villains of the Marvel Universe to take over the world. It seems like everyone wants the throne of this planet. Captain America is facing HYDRA in Berlin, where the sinister terrorist organization wants to release a synthetic pathogen that can wipe out the entire human race. Only HYDRA got the antidotes.

Black Widow and Hawkeye are struggling in the Savage Land against the A.I.M's latest nanotech compound invented to make humanity its slave.

Iron Man is fighting for his life when Ultron shows up from nowhere in Washington DC, jamming all the communications.

While in Siberia The God of Thunder and Wanda Maximoff are in deep perils as Dormmammu has trapped them in his own pocket dimension and surprisingly the master of the dark dimension is planning to save the world by becoming its ruler.

Dr.Bruce Banner is working together with The High Evolutionary to find a cure of his disease, to get rid of his alter ego. In return Banner must assist Wyndham to blast a large population out of existence. On the same day The Avengers are cornered and they are facing five alpha level threats. With all the communications are completely down, the Earth's Mightiest Heroes must overcome the odds and get together to face even a bigger threat. Will they be able to assemble?

If you want to know then please read this Novel of the Marvel Universe by New York Times best seller author Dan Abnett. The author won the best Comic Book writer award in 2003. There are more than fifty books in his arsenal. He has also written Iron Man, New Mutants, Doctor Strange and Punisher for Marvel. Being an avid Comic Book fan, this is the very first Novel based on Comics characters I have gone through.

The first half of the story might be felt a bit slow for the readers but later on things get into a pretty fast pace. I think Dan Abnett did a great job here. His storytelling ability is remarkable. The vivid description nicely put by him and his attention to details would make any Comic Book reader engaged who has profound knowledge on The Marvel Universe or even The Marvel Cinematic Universe. This book is definitely not for the readers who don't have any proper knowledge on Marvel.

I will give "Avengers: Everybody Wants to Rule the World," by Dan Abnett, a marginal three-star rating. For a novelization of a "Marvel comic books" type of plot, it's pretty decent. The book takes a while to get going with a Captain America section that seems to strain the author's ability to write a "gritty action" section.

The point of this novel is that the Avengers, split into groups of one or two, must face FIVE alpha-level world-domination threats at the same time. Captain America is fighting Baron Von Strucker and H.Y.D.R.A. in Berlin. Iron Man is fighting Ultron (with Vision's help) near Washington DC. Thor is fighting a "magical threat" in Siberia (with the Scarlet Witch), Bruce Banner (a.k.a. The Hulk) is after The High Evolutionary in Madripoor, and Hawkeye and Black Widow are taking on A.I.M. in the Savage Land. S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury are along for the ride, as always, but they take a backseat to the Avengers.

Each Avenger (or pair of Avengers) is on their own because the world communication network is down--thanks to Ultron. And each of the five alpha-level threats has coordinated--some in great haste--their attacks for the same day. Yet these "alphas" are not cooperating in any real way. Each one seems to be in direct competition with the others to dominate Earth first. Finding out the reason why is the final mystery to unlock for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Some of the Avenger solo/duo missions are more interesting than others, but the author tries to give them all an equal share of page-time and also make their adventures "sync up" with the personalities of the Avengers involved. But I found the final "Avengers Assemble!" mission against the instigator of the huge crisis to be somewhat lacking in epic excitement.

"Avengers: Everybody Wants to Rule the World" isn't a bad escapist read, if you're a fan of Marvel Comics or the Marvel movies. But without a love of superheroes--and the Avengers in particular--this book might not be that interesting.

"Wait a minute, you have given an Avengers book 5 stars? Are you kidding me?" This may be the thought going through your mind right now. Fair dues. I get that. However, hear me out. I try to rate according to context. War and Peace this is not. But if you were to line all the Avengers books up, nose to tail, not only would they stretch from here to Hoboken, this one would rise to the top as illustrative of how to write a top notch super-hero novel. It has it all and combines what is best about the comics and the movies into a non-stop action packed romp that will have you breezing through it in no time. This is absolutely a movie for the mind that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.

Unlike the comics the cast of characters mirrors the movies, sans Ant-Man and Spider-Man. Doctor Strange gets a look-in, but he does not figure in this story. Rather it is Black Widow, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Captain America, The Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and some weird Green Guy, what was his name...? They all end up fighting disparate villains all bent on the taking over the world. As we jump from encounter to encounter we, and Nick Fury, are left wondering if this is some sort of bizarre coincidence or is there some greater peril afoot. Well you may wonder. Throughout there is an abundance of action with narrative deftly woven through that does not slow the pace down one little bit. Of course, the snarky Tony Stark provides plenty of comic relief and trust me, you will need it as a chance to catch your breath.

Dan Abnett is one of those guys who I believe is addicted to writing. I first came across him through a Warhammer 40,000 book that I very much enjoyed and have bumped into him in various other titles through the years. He has the chops to put out terrific adventure stories and he absolutely nails it with this one. If you are an Avengers fan (And who isn't?) you are going to have an excellent time here. Do yourself a favor and grab this one. 'Nuff said!

Uwielbiam Uniwersum Marvela.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD. This was a brilliant read. Despite the avengers being isolated, spread across the globe, they still find the means to come together and destroy the threat or threats since there are about 5 or 6 alpha situations going on, which could have led to the fall of mankind. It is told from different perspectives and I undoubtedly enjoyed the Tony Stark ones the most. For some reason, cap, banner, thor and wanda, black widow and hawkeye don't appeal to me as much.

There are many characters and organisations which are briefly mentioned in the movies and they pose their ultimatums respectively in this novel. Submit or have your mind controlled, be irradiated, be killed. As the avengers assemble after destroying Ultron and going back online, they defeat the Kree who wanted the Earth destroyed as humans are too advanced and yet bear no responsibilities. It was a competition in which the world's criminal organisations and terrorists participated and yet no organisation succeeded in the end, as expected.

One of these days, it is best for the villain to win and change the course of marvel history. I've been watching the movies and the series and it's rather disappointing despite the antagonists growing self aware and shifting in the antihero dimension haha It is expertly written and kept me intrigued throughout however I feel as though the resolution, following the climax, wasn't explained so well and felt rushed. To be fair, I felt the same way with the second book in this series which I read first haha

A Review of the Audiobook

Published by GraphicAudio in 2015
Read by a multicast
Duration: about 6 hours

Captain America is called to Berlin to uncover a Hydra plot. Iron Man is called to Washington, D.C. to confront Ultron. Thor is in Siberia confronting a magical threat of immense proportions. Dr. Banner is investigating a mystery of his own with SHIELD. And, Black Widow and Hawkeye have their own problems confronting A.I.M.

The Avengers are each pulled into their separate top-level emergencies - each of which could result in a worldwide disaster. Soon enough, the Avengers discover that each of these threats has arisen in response to a much larger threat - if only they can figure out what it is in time...

Usually, I really enjoy...

From Captain America fighting Baron Struker in Germany to Bruce Banner tricking the high evolutionary in Madripore this one kept the tension pretty high as each avenger was fighting a potentially world ending threat which would normally require all of them together to take out even one, while finding out that the main puppet master behind all of this are not even from the earth and was basically handing the earth out to the highest bidder, what's not to like here? Especially in the end when Banner finally Hulks out and starts smashing the best of the enemy weapons, reading and watching it in comics is one thing but reading about the whole thing was definitely a whole new experience and I LOVED every minute of it, it's not part of the MCU in any way but will surely give an MCU vibe for sure. If you like these characters then you should definitely read this one

This book was a bit messy in my opinion. It tried to do too many things but none of them worked for me in this way. Basicly most of this book is split up in 5 storylines that barely connect. It constantly switches between all 5 as well. This caused for me to not be able to connect fully to either of the stories. Besides that I did have some storylines I was more interested in than others which caused me to be bored throughout most of them. When I picked this up I expected for the storylines to connect earlier in the novel but it only happened in the last 20 pages and I genuily think that if everyone was brought together earlier I would have enjoyed this book even more. The sad thing is all 5 stories seperately could have been very interesting if they would have gotten their own book. The final battle felt a bit rushed and quick as it only happened in 20 pages. I also didn't like that in the very last page a new componant was introduced but we didn't do anything with that in this book. It felt more like a quick set up to a sequel but as this is a standalone novel it felt completely useless to me. The biggest thing this book has going for it is that it is a very quick read. Even when I was bored I completely flew through this book.

A kind of super-hero story that might have been ponderous as an actual comic. Cap's fighting HYDRA in Berlin, Black Widow & Hawkeye are going after A.I.M. in the Savage Land, the Hulk's in Madripoor with the High Evolutionary, Thor and Scarlet Witch are in an extradimensional realm dealing with Dormammu, and Iron Man, Quicksilver and Vision are with S.H.I.E.L.D. and they've got Ultron. Chapter by chapter, we go once more around to the dealer. Why is all of this happening at once? The reveal is interesting but not earth-shaking, but the storytelling is a romp. Enjoyable superhero escapism.

After the last two books, I just wanted a light, easy read. This was that. But it was not great. Even for a light easy read. There’s lots of action, but no characterization. It could be Iron Man fighting Ultron but it could just as easily have been Batman or Geralt, or Joe Blow from next door.
But the worst part is how the author kept using the word “squirt” in place of “send”. The Black Widow didn’t ‘send’ a data file; she “squirted” one. That alone makes me want to politely smack him.
