The Phoenix Wars #1

From the Ashes

Rate this book
An impossible choice that can only end in ashes...

I know I'm about to be fired. After the civil war, when Sven Mishal accepted the mantle of Phoenix King from Mia Hill, it's the obvious outcome. I was appointed by the late, psychotic King Emberich so he won't see my loyalty to the now devastated flocks.

Sven has no choice but to get rid of me.

It really doesn't help that he's golden, gorgeous and when I'm near him, my heart literally flutters. Stupid heart.

Unrest bubbles beneath the surface of the Phoenix community. Most are still angry about how the conspiracy and coup went down, how badly it destroyed lives, and they blame Sven. Enough to want to kill him.

How do I stop an assassination with my own life intact?

USA Today bestselling author Miranda Martin writes fantasy and scifi romance featuring heroes with out-of-this-world anatomy that readers call 'larger than life' and smart heroines destined to save the world. As a little girl, she would sneak off with her nose in a book, dreaming of magical realms. Today she brings those fantasies to life and adores every fan who chooses to live in them for a while.

Though born and raised in southern Virginia, Miranda Martin is a veteran who's traveled to places like Korea, Hawaii, and good 'ole Texas. She's since settled in Kansas, the heart of America, with her husband and daughters, a cat, and wishes for a pet dragon or unicorn. When she's not writing, you can still find her tucked away somewhere with a warm blanket and her nose in a book.

Adara and her people are recovering from a change in power. The old king was removed from the throne and a need king was brought in. Adara isn’t expecting to keep her job as the Liaison to the King, but when she meets with the new appointed King, Sven, she learns that is exactly what the case is to be. After the civil war, a human dragon-phoenix hybrid abdicated the throne to Sven so that she could go be with her dragon mate. Now the process of rebuilding has begun. King Sven must walk a delicate line with the people as the common folk believe that he will be like the last and favor those with money. Adara herself will be walking a fine line as on one hand the people will believe she speaks for them, but when the lines of her relationship with King Sven become blurred it will be called into question. Danger lurks and creeps ever closer. When it strikes a secret will be revealed.
From the Ashes: A Dragon & Phoenixes novel is book one in this new series by Miranda Martin and Nadia Hunter. This is the first book that I have read by either of these authors and one that I highly enjoyed. From the Ashes is a paranormal romance novel that gives us phoenixes and dragons. The story picks up after a civil war that devastated many of the phoenixes. The story is told from the first person of Adara. She’s a truly engaging character. I love how focused and driven she is on helping her people. She works so hard to maintain the balance between all so that there isn’t any being viewed as being favored above others. It’s not easy for her or King Sven either. I like the pace and amount of romance in this novel. Adara attempts to resist her feelings due to politics and her position, but I like that she allows it to happen.
While I enjoyed this book very much there are a few editorial issues in this story. In a couple places there are misplaced words or missing words. These errors are not distracting to the point of that they detract from the story, but they do catch the eye and cause a bump in the story. The story flows beautifully, but there are a couple moments of where I felt the story could have been stopped to leave the reader wanting more.
The authors do a fantastic job with this story. The characters are engaging and they write in something that will truly catch you off guard and are exactly what you are expecting as well. There are some steamy scenes as well, but they leave you eager for more. There is political intrigue, danger, romance and more. This is a good series to grab up and sink your teeth into.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.

Although this is the first book in a series, I feel it would really be helpful to have read the previous Trilogy, Dragons & Phoenixes. This book picks up shortly after the last book of the previous trilogy ends and deals heavily with the aftermath of that book.

I really wish we got more of Sven's perspective in this book. We get just a bit of his POV and I really think I would have enjoyed the story more with a bit more of his thoughts. I did like Adara, and I liked seeing the bits of her work and her struggle emotionally between her attraction to Sven and her worries about her dedication to her people. It will be interesting to see where this series goes from here.

After the war rebuilding and repairing the damage will take time. Adjusting to the new king among the embittered clans of the phoenix people Adara finally gets the opportunity to truly help her people when King Sven retains her position as liaison. She is not quite sure if she trusts him like the rest of his kingdom. She also must deal with these feelings she has towards him she cannot give in she has worked too hard to reach her acceptance by the clans.

There is so many things going on and it is primarily told from Adara's point of view until near the end when we get Sven's for reasons I won't reveal here. I really like the world Ms. Martin has created with the dragons and phoenixes. I can't wait to see what occurs next, If you love shifters I encourage you to add this to your library.

I voluntarily read an advance copy and have not been compensated in any way for this opinion.

Wonderful beginning to a spin-off series...

This is the first book in the "Phoenix Wars" series which is a spin-off the "Dragon and Phoenix" series. This book starts after the appointment of Sven Mishal as the new Phoenix King. Adara is the Internal Liaison to the Crown. Since she was appointed by the previous King, Adara expects to be fired. To her surprise, King Sven keeps her in this position. The two work well together and make great strides in helping the flocks recover from the Civil War. As they grow closer, not everyone is happy about it. Not everyone is happy to have Sven as the King either. Will an assassination attempt succeed? What will happen when Sven discovers Adara"s secret? So looking forward to the next book.

Loved it. I have enjoyed many books by this author but this one, I have to add to my favorite list. It was such a great story-line with well thought out believable characters. That are easily relatable to, in fact, it even had me in tears at one point, and I always say if a book can make me smile, laugh or cry then, it is a really good book. If I could have read this in one go I would have as I certainly didn't want to put it down. But unlike most books these days this one wasn't a short read. If you enjoy a Paranormal romance that contains shifters and don't mind the odd hot scene or books that bring on the waterworks then you will truly love this book.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first book in the series which is a spin-off the "Dragon and Phoenix" series. While it's a spin off I feel it would be helpful to have read the dragon and Phoenix series prior or you may be a bit confused [like myself] by it besides that point, it was still a good read and I enjoyed it. The main characters are complex and there is alot of chemistry and along with realistic aspects throughout the story.

a strong female among many and varied politicos can make a difference.

reaching out, gathering info, and working to make changes in the aftermath of a war.

but can love rise from the ashes of a shattered empire?

can it survive if it does?

strong characters, a colorful world - and oooh, the fires of love, hate, and betrayal.

This is an amazing story from Miranda Martin, this is Adara’s and King Sven’s story. I’m not going to give you any spoilers so read Miranda’s blurb and that will give you the gist to this story. All I can really say is that I loved the whole story great world building and I loved the characters, there’s so much going on in this book to keep you entertained and turning the pages it was such a fantastic read. I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

An interesting look at how shifters either do or don't get along. It was interesting how there was only the two main groups. I wasn't sure if there were any other types of shifters. I like the main characters and how they work together and how they come into their relationship. It seems natural in how they like each other. I enjoyed the book and am interested in what could happen next. check out more reviews at underthebookmark.com

This is a great new start to the Phoenix Flocks, this takes place after the Dragon/Phoenix War to rid the Phoenix of an evil king. This story had so many humanistic moments in it...it is tender and loving and violent and harsh. The ending was a surprise but was wonderful. This will be a fun story to follow and I can see that it will be as good as the Dragons, which I loved!

This is the first book in the Phoenix Wars series which is part of the Dragon and Phoenixes world. This book focuses on the Phenix flocks after the Dragon/Phoenix wars and shows just how much has to be done after a war. But let me say there were several surprises that I truly enjoyed.

Adara & Sven's characters are rich & well thought out. The author depicts the struggles they face after the overthrow in depth. We feel for these characters as they struggle with the drama & their attraction to one another. We are left wanting the next part of their story already.

I enjoyed this story and the life saving but it was kind of anticlimatic in the end. I wish there had been more building between them but she just suddenly gave in. And there was nothing said through the whole book about the surprise untilit happened. It should have been hinted at some.

Adara, Sven

Adara is King Sven's Internal Advisor. They are interested in one another personally, even though Adara is not sure a relationship is wise.

Characterization is excellent and plotting good.
