Kacy Barnett-Gramckow is an author I know I will love. Her Heavens Before Trilogy is among my favorite book series of all time. When I saw she had written some other books, of course I had to check them out.
This is the story of a Messianic family that is sent to the wilds of Colorado. They are a tightknit, loving family that holds fast to their Christin faith and their Jewish heritage. I loved seeing such a wonderful portrayal messianic believers in a book. While not overdone, it added a wonderful dimension to the family.
The settings were vivid and felt historically accurate. I haven’t studied a huge about mines in the mid 1800’s Colorado, but so many things and struggles lined up with what I do know. I also loved that this books showed the affects on a family, not your normal gorgeous single people only.
I loved how deep and real all the characters felt. Many of them faced hardships yet held to their convictions. Others got angry, others let go of some of their ideals, and all of them felt real. May was my favorite. I wanted to cry with her a few times. She went through a lot, struggled, but clung to God.
This story was powerful, but I almost gave up because it was so sad in points. This family goes through so much and the author did a great job of drawing me into their pain. Yet, I kept reading and I am so glad I did. This didn’t end with a perfect ending that was tied up with a bow. Yet it was deeply satisfying. Those who like realistic over perfect will really like this story.
I highly recommend this to those who like historical fiction, realistic feeling stories, and books about families.
This book kept me turning the pages. I hated when life interrupted my reading. I thoroughly loved this story and the characters. It made me both laugh and cry. I hated for it to end.
I was totally intrigued by the family's Hebrew-Christian faith and wonder how many families throughout history combined these two faiths?
As a genealogist myself, I love stories inspired by family history. I recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction or inspirational romance.
5 stars for a great story, for keeping me wanting to read, and for its inspirational and encouraging message. I already bought a copy for our church library.
Oh, I loved this book! I became so attached to the characters that they were like real people to me, and I couldn’t wait to get back to reading whenever I was forced to stop. When I finished the book, I kept wanting to read more!! The plot was realistic and never went the way I expected it to. I easily lost myself in these peoples’ lives. I wish there were sequels and I could lose myself in this world every night! This is a beautiful, well-written book that pulled my heart completely in to the story.
Finding the hidden blessings God has waiting for those who don't give up.
Moved to the Colorado mountains for her father's job May's mother dies then a few months later her father is killed in a mine accident leaving May, her sister and three brothers, the youngest just a little baby. Without much money or any way of caring for them while she is working the law steps in and separated them. May is left with baby Andy to care for while she tries to reunite her family. Beautiful story of heartbreaking Love.
It took me a few chapters to get into the book, but then I didn't want to put it down!! I read it in 2 1\2 days!!! I loved the fact they didn't lose their Jewish heritage but built on it to receive Christ!! Very uplifting!!
I loved this book! For the family who has "a Job Year" in which they are separated, the next years will be filled with blessings and love. God directs each of the children to a richer, more meaningful life when they listen to Him.
