What I thought: Oh, that beginning! Once again Nicoline paints a very vivid picture with her world of Namaté. Here we have the land of Crystet, inhabited by people made of glass. These beautiful, cold, and fragile creatures are so different yet similar to the strong and combative Bouldes (people made of stone) from the land of Orewall. What I love most about Nicoline's writing is that her heroes are not perfect - they are outrageously flawed, which it is what makes their journey (in this case, Gwynessa's journey) so fascinating and heart wrenching to watch. So many of Gwyn's trials and tribulations gave me an extra sting as a reader - especially with the #metoo movement continuously gaining momentum. I rooted for our heroine regardless of the choices she made. I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the world of Namaté.

The Quote: May you always resist what is learned in examination of more noble paths. May your explorations lead to progress for the greater good, and may your defiance shape our world into a better one.

Why I chose it: I felt like this was the perfect anthem we should bless all our daughters with!

Next JK Rowling?

I had the opportunity to meet the author...and she, of course, suggested the series. I may be overcritical with 4 stars...but I believe there is so much story here in both this volume and Orewall that could have been expanded on. Yes, it would have taken longer to write...but many things were glossed past.

In all in this time of, in my opinion, writing that does NOT call a reader to a higher level...Nicoline Evans does. She does not dumb down the language for the reader at the level this series is directed at...but calls them up.

This is a story of cruelty. From nearly the first page until the last. I don't mind a dark story, but this is too much. I like to read fantasy for otherworldly problems in another world. I also like otherworldly problems in our world. This book is the worst of our worlds problems in another world. I had to force myself to finish it, hoping it would get better. It never did. It is the second book in a series, and though I liked the first book, this kinda killed it for me and I doubt I'll go on to continue the series.

This was a good book, but it definitely wasn't my favorite of her books. It was very sad and very heavy, so I couldn't give it 5 stars.

This book took a little longer for me to read because it touched on some intense emotions during an intense time in my life. Nicoline Evan’s spins a tale so well, creates a world so beautiful and cruel. I love her stories and this one was no different. I highly recommend this book, but beware that it will definitely make you think about cruelty and kindness.
