A renegade criminal profiler and a forensic psychologist--the only female profiling team in the nation--have teamed up to write the most useful guide to serial killers ever created.
While other serial killer books tend to conceal the clear facts behind complex technical language and psychobabble, this one actually tells it like it is. Killing for Sport will intrigue you with its honest portrayal of the predator-next-door: how he hunts for his victims, why he likes to torture them, where he tends to stash their bodies, and more.
Movies such as Silence of the Lambs, Seven, American Psycho, and many others have created myths about serial killers that need to be dispelled: If you think that most serial killers are eccentric, white, male intellectuals like Hannibal Lecter, then you had better read Killing for Sport to learn the truth. The more our society is informed about these predators and what really goes on in their minds, the more equipped we will be to protect ourselves from them.
With the same dark wit that gets people who work with the criminally insane through their workday, Sinclair and Brown speak frankly about the monsters among us who kill for sport. Pat Brown and Timandra Sinclair have become our national authorities on child abduction, murder, and serial killing.
Clearly recognized as an unstoppable team, they have made countless appearances on Fox News and CNN to offer a professional analysis of some of the biggest and most troubling cases ever to hit the front page. These cases include: the hunt for John Muhammad and John Malvo; the disappearances of Chandra Levy, Samantha Runnion, Jennifer Short, and Elizabeth Smart; the crimes of Roy Raitliff, Michael Skakel, and WardWeaver; and the profiles of the Baton Rouge Serial Killer.
There is no team more qualified to write a manual on the killers who threaten our society.
First of all, this was published almost 20 years ago which I did not realize going into it, and now things make a little bit more sense because this shit doesn't really hold up.
The author was trying to provide a layman’s guide to serial killers and serial crime, but it comes off as if she thinks all her readers are idiots and all other Profilers are jokes that she has little respect for. Pat Brown is a Profiler herself, but she was self-taught until she went back to school for criminal justice in 2007 – which is after this book was published. She does not come from law enforcement, but if my memory serves me, she experienced something in her personal life that pushed her down this path, thinking someone needed to be doing a better job than the cops were. Not that I’m saying you need certain qualifications to be right or to garner respect in whatever you’re doing, but there’s something about her vibe that’s so self-righteous it’s just… not great. It’s a good thing the book was short.
Did I learn some stuff? Maybe, but I also feel like it was information that was already in my brain, floating around somewhere after literal decades of watching crime shows, crime documentaries, listening to podcasts, etc. The market is just so saturated with true-crime that I’m not sure a book this dated is relevant anymore... unless you’re a person who has had zero exposure to the topic. But the audiobook was only four hours long and I needed something to kill the time.
All in all, this is pretty basic. The language is dumbed down. It’s filled with quotes from serial killers, and it’s a sad day when you enjoy the quotes from the psychos more than you do the writing from the author.
And the bit about telling “feminists” not to get angry with her for saying we should protect ourselves from bad men?? I just… *smh*
"I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than a poet can help the inspiration to sing..." H.H. Holmes
The book is filled with quotes by serial killers (and other people), which I found at times quite distracting. In many places they even felt irrelevant. I suppose they are there to help guide the reader into the mind of serial killers, and all in all I enjoyed them more than the actual text by the author. Had the book been called "Quotes by serial killers" I might have given it more stars.
I am not a fan of the style in which the writer presents the subject of the book. There are several broad generalisations and her attempt to explain things in layman's terms simply comes off as talking down to the reader. Most of the information in the book is so basic that anyone with any knowledge of serial killers is sure to be disappointed. There is a limit as to how simply and painstakingly things need to be explained.
The author states that she wants the reader to be offended. In my opinion, at times it felt like the book concentrated too hard on trying to offend and left a lot to be desired in other areas. The tone is in part "humorous" and the author explains it is because people in her field use black humour to cope. I am all for black humour, but this book just is not funny at all and the attempts at humour simply end up being sad.
In addition, I thought people who have only killed one person couldn't be serial killers because of the definition of the word "serial", but what the heck, the author disagrees. People who have killed once might kill again given the chance. I assume one cannot be convicted of being a potential serial killer though.
In many places the text also stinks of victim balming. Now... the author tells the feminists not to get angry, that it is not about their rights, but I am still not convinced the best way to get your point across is to offend as many people as possible.
In the end there is a section where the author discusses the ways in which working as a profiler can affect the lives of children when their parents discuss serial killers at the dinner table and keep crime scene pictures in their drawers. And watch more violent porn than the local pervert. Well I hope to god that most parents are wise enough to keep that stuff away from their children as long as they are young enough to be called children. I sure did not, do not and do not even want to know what kind of porn and how much of it my parents watch.
However, I am not a complete stranger to violent porn myself and as a former World of Warcraft addict and current D&D gamer my opinion might biased since these can be true yellow flags when it comes to defining what kind of a person might become a serial killer.
Did this book manage to offend me? Most certainly! Mostly by being badly written and waste of my time. It might offer some mild entertainment to someone without any previous knowledge on the subject.
This is the kind of book that can only do more harm than good.
I suppose there is no law dictating that a serious topic is deserving of a serious tone. But in adopting a tone of flippancy, Brown is in danger of demeaning the very people she claims to be writing for: the families of victims.
Brown claims that it is her purpose to answer questions about serial killers with "no fluff, no psychobabble, and no ego trips." Well, there is no psychobabble.
Alarm bells began to ring at the title: Killing for Sport.
Okay, she claims that the "book is written as much as possible from the point of view of the predator." But this simply does not ring true.
All sport is competition with a knowing opponent. One might get a kick out of the competition itself, or the victory. An observer might find the whole spectacle entertaining. But it is rather dubious to think the sportsman is entertained during competition.
Nor can we think of the victim as the opponent, as they are an unwitting and unwilling participant. The best analogy for serial killing must be hunting, where the object of the hunt is a hapless victim.
There just is no evidence to suggest that serial killers are simply having a jolly jape of a time. The psychotics are too out of touch with reality to be aware of what they're doing or why they're doing it; the psychopaths are very much aware of what they're doing and the feeling of power they gain from doing it. In all its many forms, entertainment is usually a form of relaxation or escape from the daily grind. Serial killing, as an activity, is neither; nor is it seen as such by either type of killer.
Take, for example, just one of the quotes from serial killers with which Brown decorates her pages:
"I don't believe in man, God, nor Devil. I hate the whole damned human race, including myself... I preyed upon the weak, the harmless and the unsuspecting. This lesson I was taught by others: Might makes right." Carl Panzram
This does not sound like a man enjoying himself. Yet Brown reckons that "these guys all seem to follow a happy little path of destruction; and their crimes reflect it." And her tone reflects her belief that they are merely out for a good time.
An essential aspect of sport is that one's opponent at least has a 'sporting chance' of avoiding defeat. Yet Panzram admits he chose victims precisely lacking such an opportunity. Also, notice he didn't simply choose, but "preyed upon" his victims - a term more pertinent to the hunt than any sporting activity.
UK readers will know what I mean by calling this book 'The Sun's Guide to Serial Killers'.
Shocking, compelling and at times deeply disturbing "Killing for Sport" is an eye opening view into the minds of serial killers. Unlike other books on the subject Author/Profiler Pat Brown simplifies the difficult to understand jargon and explains each aspect in common language. Her book gives the reader a interesting look into the life of a profiler and the world of the serial killer. Throughout her book Ms. Brown makes use of actual quotes from well known serial killers, which adds to the jaw dropping reality of how incurably sick and dangerous such individuals are.
The Author:
"Pat Brown is a nationally known criminal profiler, television commentator, author, and founder and CEO of The Sexual Homicide Exchange and The Pat Brown Criminal Profiling Agency. Through The Sexual Homicide Exchange, Ms. Brown offers pro-bono criminal profiling and training for law enforcement. She also provides profiling consultation to attorneys, families, and producers through The Pat Brown Criminal Profiling Agency. Ms. Brown holds a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Boston University and she developed the first Criminal Profiling and Investigative Analysis certificate program in the country for Excelsior College. She is the founder and director of The Society for Investigative Criminal Profiling, an organization working to promote criminal profiling as a major tool in police investigations. Ms.Brown has provided crime commentary, profiling and forensic analysis in over one thousand television and radio appearances in the United States and globally. She contributed to special feature content included in the 2005 home DVD edition of Profiler: Season Two and the 15th Anniversary Edition, 2006 DVD release of Quentin Tarantino's crime classic, Reservoir Dogs.
My Personal Opinion: Ms. Brown's "no non-since" approach to explaining the mind of the serial killer is both refreshing and astounding. Where other authors beat about the brush, leaving the reader wondering what the author really implied, Ms. Brown boldly reaches out to the reader in plain English. Ms. Brown is very point blank in her presentation, while adding a refreshing touch of humor. This book is a great read for all who wonder how serial killers think. I recommend this book, but due to the nature of this topic reader discretion is advised.
This is one of the most shallow, incoherent and rambling ‘true crime’ books I’ve ever read. It is a muddy mess of very limited depth and seems to sum up or dismiss every point with flippant lightheartedness. The author clearly has some problem with profiling, seeming to describe every profiling success that has ever been made as luck or chance. Similarly, in answering the question ‘Do the police ever use psychics’, the author decides not to answer the question in a. Straightforward manner, but embark upon a lengthy diatribe about why she thinks any and all psychics are fake. This is a vanity novel with absolutely no merit or redeeming features, that seems to exist solely to allow the author rants like this.
The book is framed in questions (not actually asked by anybody, but she obviously needed a device, I suspect writing a fully formed book on this subject would be far too taxing), and is littered with irrelevant quotes from serial killers. It's an odd way to present this information and it would take a far better author than Pat Brown to successfully pull it off.
The writing style is patronising and the information given is extremely limited; if you have ever red any true crime whatsoever, you will already know everything that is in this book - this leads to the feeling that you are being talked down to at all times. Any reader approaching this book hoping to learn something will be sorely disappointed.
I just couldn’t get over her hostility towards FBI profilers - I lost count of the times she made disparaging remarks about any and all profilers and the profiles they have (successfully, I might add) given in the past. I get the impression that Pat Brown desperately wanted to be a profiler but didn’t make the cut somewhere along the line. It’s left her incredibly bitter, if this book is anything to go by, but to get over the disappointment, she set up her own “profiling agency”! This venture is inventively titled ‘The Pat Brown Criminal Profiling Agency’ - I wonder if her distaste towards actual professional profilers extends to her own profit-making profiling agency. One almost wonders why anyone would want to create distrust of FBI profilers, perhaps to lead them to agencies with your own name in the title? Very surprisingly, I was unable to find any successful cases solved with her expert profiling help.
Don’t take any notice of the nonsense, bizarre claim that the author ‘wants to offend the reader’ with this book. The only thing that offended me about it was wasting any time on this drivel.
For some reason I was under the impression that I would learn something from this book.
Can women be serial killers? Yes.
Are all killers men? Nope.
What is a serial killer? Well, according to my research on Google, "A serial killer is a person who has murdered three or more people over a period of more than a month, with down time (a "cooling off period") between each of the murders." According to this book, someone who's killed one or more people. Why? Because if that person hadn't been caught, they would've done it again.
Why do murderers usually kill someone of their own race? They usually kill what they know. So, some white dude lives in a mostly white area. Who does he kill? Probably a white, because that's what he's surrounded by.
Do killers generally kill in areas they know? Generally.
Are most people killed by someone they know? Yes.
It's all the basics. I haven't learned anything from this self-proclaimed most valuable insight into the minds of serial killers you'll ever read that I couldn't have learned by watching one or two episodes of Dateline or 48 Hours.
I'm not a fan of this one. She had some good points, but seemed bent on knocking the FBI and their methods through the whole thing. it got a little old.
A convenient set of Frequently (Apparently) Asked Questions about the lives, loves and crimes of serial killers, as written by someone with a particular agenda to push. Littered with quotes from serial killers themselves, as well as real world examples, Killing for Sport is a somewhat blandly-written look at the world of murderers.
I guess as one of the most horrifying types of criminal in society - the serial killer - these murderers are at least a curiosity, if not a fascination for members of regular society. There are plenty of movie franchises, and book series about hunts for serial killers, and most people could rattle off half a dozen if asked - from BTK, the Boston Strangler, Jack the Ripper, the Zodiac Killer, Charles Manson and friends, just to name a few. The question that this book seeks to answer, however, is how much we really know about what goes on inside serial killers' heads, beyond the fictional fantasy we see in the popular media.
I guess in considering where the value of the book lies, one has to look at the author, who is a criminal profiler in her own right, and she brings a lot of that sensibility to the book, although she is not afraid of a little self-aggrandising at times. Which is not to say that serial killers are worthy of anything more than our contempt, but her style really does start to wear on you after a while.
On the matter of style, I found that it was largely organised as a FAQ, with a few snippets of information and snark posed as responses to questions that she feels are the most commonly asked, or most common misconceptions. While I found the book informative, and more than a little disturbing, I also found that it became repetitive, and could have been organised more around topical chapters, rather than the way it was. If you are looking for information about specific cases or individuals, there are probably far better works on those. On the other hand, this is a competent, if dry, primer on the topic as a whole.
Killing for Sport was a very enjoyable book. Written by a profiler who knows quite a bit about serial killers and how they operate.
Reading the book was like having a Q&A with the author and killers both. Ms. Brown asked questions that we all wonder about regarding how these murderers do what they do, then goes on to answer them.
The author tried to add light humor along with the information which at times I felt was in bad taste, but then again, murder is in bad taste. I understand that in this kind of job you have to find humor where ever you can to keep your sanity.
The title lead me to believe this book was going to be a detailed look into the minds of serial killers; not some silly Q&A format with some grey boxes on the side with quotes from the killers. it grabbed my attention very early on, the voice behind the book, but once I flipped forward and discovered the entire book was written the same way, I lost interest. However, I did stick with it. Would not recommend it.
Non-fiction book that gives a bit of a look at serial killers. A bit arrogant in the presentation. "I'm correct and all others are wrong." Perhaps in her time she may be correct in her field, but not the end all in all. She is a profiler yet, hasn't profiled any of the big ones that she sites in the book it seems. I enjoyed the learning of it however and it tied in well with my criminal justice investigations class.
Brown demystifies the world of serial killers and profiling in a no-jargon, no mumbo-jumbo book. Contains good tips for not becoming a crime victim. A much easier read and more informative in many ways than most books on profiling.
Its ok, its interesting enough but it left a lot out. If you go on wikipedia and search for a specific serial killer it will tell you more information. It doesn't touch on any of the serial killers for long enough so you can get a clear picture of what they did in detail. Yea, just ok.
I've never really read a book that starts out disappointed in its own existence. The opening sentiment starts like this "I've waited long enough for someone with my exact qualifications to write this exact book, and nobody has, so here it is."
If anything, the book is just interesting to someone who has never studied serial killers. The text is fairly biased and feels a bit choppy, but overall the book was engaging.
Uvijek treba ostati smiren i igrati odgovorno i mudro.

A magas esélyeket minden játékos keresi.
A részletes statisztikák vezetésével valódi értékelést készíthet teljesítményéről.
A kis nyeremények megszerzése olyan stratégia, amelyet sok játékos gyakran figyelmen kívül hagy.

Progresszív fogadási rendszerek – melyek a legnépszerűbbek?
Fogadás esélytelenebbekre – stratégia a sportfogadásban
Hiszen bármi lehetséges, főleg a fogadás világában.
Következtetés: A megfelelő fogadási stratégiával minden lehetséges

Anyone who knows me understands I have a morbid interest in criminal psychology, so when it comes to giving a good insight into the criminals mindset, this book does deliver what it says in the title. A slight issue I had with the book was how it was structured, it would start chapters with "Are/Do all serial killers [insert obvious cliche]?". I understand the author was trying to kill some misconceptions about serial killers, but with questions like "Are all serial killers white?" or "Do all serial killers target their own racial group?", they were a little eye rolling due to how obvious the answer is.
Despite the obvious cliches, it did have some good insights into the killers mindset in certain parts of the book. Overall it was an engaging book, and I would especially recommend it to someone if they've just finished a difficult read and now want something more simple to get through.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. This was the second non-fiction book I have read this year and is definitely better than the first. I really liked the way this book was separated into different parts and each had a topic or theme it would be discussing. These weren't chapters, but sections with chapters within it. Pat Brown did a lot of great research to write this book. I enjoyed reading this book and will likely choose one like it in the future.
There wasn't much I didn't like about this book. If I had to choose one thing it would be the repetition of facts. I heard a lot of the same facts over and over again. If the book kept the repetition out, it would go by a lot quicker. Overall, this was a great book I would definitely recommend this book to others.
Killing for Sport is a sharp, no-nonsense deep dive into the minds of serial killers. Pat Brown’s blunt, unsugarcoated style is refreshing, and hearing her narrate the audiobook herself gives the whole experience even more edge.
A must-read for anyone interested in criminal profiling or true crime that actually teaches you something. One of those rare books you wish had been longer because it’s packed with insight from start to finish.
Note: Although this audiobook was newly released in 2025, the core content originates from earlier print editions (2003/2008). The material still holds up well, but listeners should be aware that the research and terminology reflect its original publication period.
Not impressed. I hoped to come away with a better way of spotting a creep. I found out that I'm already good at it just from living and trusting my gut instinct. This is a 20 year old book...I didn't know that at the time...that has had this subject written about by newer authors with better information and technology. The author here tried to be humorous but was not. Came across as sarcasm or condescending. It is a question and answer book from start to finish. I actually enjoyed the snippets from the killers better than what the author had to say. Read this if you happen to come across it but I wouldn't seek it out or pay for it.
