And they’re the least of her problem.
A dark power has plans for her gift.
Tamisin possesses rare magic — she's an opener.
She can unlock a person’s secrets, and their heart.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Book one in the Lick of Fire series and what great start it is too. The beginning was a little slow as Tamsin is thrown into the deep end of the magical world. She is trying to adjust and there is quite a bit of angst then it all explodes. Almost literally. As things really start coming to a head you will not be able to put this book down. not only does it get incredible but then we hit the Marzipan Highway part and I could not stop laughing (trust it will make more sense when you read it then you will be the one laughing). As if that was not enough we hit the finale which includes a cliff hanger that had me asking how she was gonna do that to us. I do have to say that what started as a four star book hit five just because of the second half. If you enjoy NA PNR novels then you really need to try this one. I loved it by the end so i give it 5/5 stars.
I'd give this 2.5 stars because I actually was interested in where this plot was going, despite the other already pointed out issues by other reviews. Then the plot took such a Huge TSTL curve, I lot interest slowly but surely. My pet hate with authors writing characters to be supposedly very, very intelligent, is the absolute lack of evidence to support it.
The heroine has barely spoken to the MMCs in the months she's been there (the timeline is a bit iffy). She almost gets everyone killed then all a sudden I love yous are being tossed around. A demon was summoned into the school but no one investigates ?? That's where I realised I didn't even care enough to skim to the end.
K, I'm a little bit annoyed right now. I just finished reading Turn on the Night at 57% through... I'll say that again 57% on the kindle app. The rest of it looks to be stories in the same world, but NOT the same book. If my rating reflected how annoyed I am by this it'd be a 2 or a 3 stars, because page stuffing is NOT cool. I get when an author has other work to showcase, I really do, but leave that for the last 5-10% and then include links for other places to read it. Give us good blurbs so I want to go read those other stories while I wait for book 2 to release. ANYTHING but page stuffing.
Ugh. Anyway.
Besides being extremely disappointed by that fact, I did enjoy the story quite a lot. I loved getting to know Tamsin, her men and her powers. I loved the magical world that was being weaved and I was so excited to learn more about it and how it all worked. I loved her three protectors, who all seemed so unique from each other, and who's backstory we all got to see, which is awesome because I find that's something that can be lacking in RH.
A few things of note that key this from a 5 stars for me: there were a few instances where the point of view became muddled, like instead of third person limited, it was third person omniscient, which was at least mostly ignorable. Another thing was a few proofreading errors, missing periods, missing words and some slight sentence confusion caused by missing words. That was for the most part ignorable and I'm sure will be fixed in time. Now two plot elements bugged me more than the technical stuff. One was the insta love that happens. For the first half of the book everything seems to be moving at a great pace, getting to know Tamsin and the men you know will be hers eventually, and then it seems like suddenly everyone is IN LOVE with each other when they have BARELY spent any time together. And I mean literally like having hung out/met like 2-3 times. Time DOES pass in some bigger gaps, but it isn't concretely discussed if these characters hang out or get to know each other in these missing gaps of time which makes the "I love you's" seem SUPER premature. Luckily, I think I can get past it since I really like the characters, and the plot so far, but I know some people will be as bothered by, or probably even more bothered by this than me. And lastly, the only other thing that kept this from a 5 stars was the incident involving the King in Shadows in the dorms. I don't want to spoil it, and I won't, but that was some BIG shit that happened and it kind of felt like it should have gone somewhere? Like adults, or some kind of security should have been investigating this incident... but they didn't? That seemed SUPER weird to me considering the book is built up on these basic magic rules that are to be enforced upon penalty of imprisonment or possibly even death... but then this crazy thing happens and that's it? Like... what? I dunno, that just really threw me off and took me a few chapters to move past. As it was happening I was DREADING all the crap our heroes were about to find themselves in. I thought they'd be interrogated, and they'd have to find some way out of that mess, especially if anyone realized that Tamsin was the cause. But again... nothing happened?
Overall, it was a fun, quick read with good characters and some development that I can see leading to an interesting series. 4 stars. Will read book 2, even though I am a bit butthurt about the 57% thing still.
This is the first book in this story and once I finished reading it, it left me excited, wondering how the plot would continue and develop after such a dramatic ending; no doubt, the next book will reveal all, and I cannot wait to read it! This is certainly a book I would have no hesitation in recommending.
After almost 2-years together, Thomas breaks up with Tamsin because he believes she is no longer at his level. Tamsin is a Valedictorian, so why is it she has received rejection letters from every school she has applied to? Unbeknown to Tamsin, Penrose University, a school for sorcerers and the like, have been sending endless letters and messages to her for the past 2-years, though she has been totally oblivious to the fact. Tamsin’s mother knew that magic was real, but she had kept it from her. Though Tamsin will be at a serious disadvantage and have lots of catching up to do, she wants to attend Penrose, a school designed to test her and shape her. Tamsin didn’t know what her powers were; but learns she is an Opener and nothing is safe from an Opener. Tamsin is hoping she can make friends with her room-mates, but Hannah is cruel and McKenzie is cold and because she is lonely she is drawn to the three men next door; Rye, Gray and Cash, who all have unique skills and hidden secrets, but also become her protectors. The thought of failing her mid-term test, prompts Tamsin to perform a ritual, so she can secure her future. Everything feels wrong though, but how could she stop now; she needs help as well as a cure for her father. The ritual had been a trap; now Tamsin is caged and the King of Shadow is free. He had taken her gift, then traded her heart for a heart of flame, but he doesn’t intend to let her live. Tamsin has been lied to by many and led to a dangerous place because she is so naïve, so trusting; there had been so many coincidences and odd setbacks. Is this all because she is an Opener? Tamsin has been played since day one; she has been spied on and manipulated the whole time, but what will await her when she attends the Lughnasa Dance with Rye, Gray and Cash by her side. Will this be yet another trap? Hannah has plans; it is supposed to be her coronation night, but not everything goes according to plan. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
Warning: cliffhanger ahead!! what an exciting read! Thaksin was happy in her little bubble that night....kissing her boyfriend Thomas and thinking of their future. Until that is, it exploded in an instant. Although she's valedictorian of her class with an amazing GPA, for some unknown reason she didn't get into ANY of her choices for college....and that included the backup to her backup a community college!!! None of this makes any sense. As if that wasn't bad enough, upon learning this tidbit, said boyfriend unceremoniously and viciously dumped her. What the check is going on? As the shock of being dumped washed over her, this electricity burned within and suddenly my the Windows around her exploded. She of course just assumed that was all in her mind. She feared telling her parents the news a out her future. Especially as her beloved dad was so ill with an odd genetic disease. So too does her twin brother...though his is much slower. What is she going to do?!? Mulling over her horrible night Tamsin goes through her stack of rejections until she finds a postcard from Penrose University. All is not lost, and apparently THEY actually want her!! Within minutes her brother tells her an odd and demanding woman called the landline and wants Tamsin to meet her at a specific time in regards to their offer to the college. He then surprises her by asking why she's looking at a blank card?? The same card telling her of the university....the SAME university that freaks every device out she attempts to look up information about it on. WTF? Something odd is going on and she's desperate enough to go to University to see what it is...and WHY all of a sudden when her emotions are high do odd things happen??? Oddly enough her mother said ems to understand what's going on. Follow Tamsins adventures into this University...see what happens when she learns the hard way that some evil roommates are more than just surly. Strange occurrences, hot guys in the next room, New powers, and a HUGE learning curve all go into play here. Welcome to Penrose University of Magic ....where all is NOT always what it seems, and just about anything and everything can occur....and not everyone is as they appear. Join in the fun!!! Lace up your boots and get ready for some adventures! You may just make some hot friends along the way. This book DOES have a whopper of a cliffhanger...so be prepared.
Okay, so I have really mixed feelings about this book. The parts I like: Tamsin is a very strong female lead and I really like her. I also really like Grey, Cash and Rye, and I love the three of them with Tamsin. Overall story was good and kept me interested all the way through. I stayed up all night reading it to see what happened next. Plot was original and fast paced. The parts I didn't like: I did NOT like what happened to Cash at the end. It honestly almost ruined the entire book for me. Another thing I didn't like was that Rye's sister is dead. I HATE when characters have dead siblings, just as much as I hate a widow/widower character (or a character that lost a mate, even if they weren't married). I don't like the cliffhanger, either. I'm looking forward to the next book, but I really, really hope that when the series finishes, Tamsin, Grey, Cash, and Rye are all together and get an HEA. It would be not only cliche if one (or more) of them died, but it would ruin the entire series. And, quite honestly, make me never read the author again because I can't stand when they kill off characters and don't give them an HEA. So... here's hoping that the series ends with an HEA for all four of them, and it isn't ruined.
What the heck? What a moron. Exactly why did she put up with that? Everyone praises her for being smart, but I have to say she’s the dumbest character. The beginning with the boyfriend was cringy, the recruiter was full on annoying and I’m not gonna say anything about the Harry P references. It’s shocking how easily manipulated she is. So close to dropping this one. Each of the characters seem more annoying than the next. The guys are okay. I like Gray, Rye is a little too sweet and Cash has a harsh bite to him. Tamsin could’ve been a decent heroine if she’d ignored everyone else and embraced her power. That’s up until chapter 22 when everything changes and the story improves. I wouldn’t say it was slow burn given how quick everything escalates. Does end in a cliffy at 55%.
The second story is a short one, with an over confident bored hunter, a prankster and a queen trying to save a possessed professor. I found the coins funny and think Cho should’ve had her own story.
Finally the last story which ended up being my favourite. I didn’t like Cassie in the beginning but once she dropped the pretence, they were a sweet couple. Would’ve liked to see more connection with Ash.
*** possible spoilers ***** I haven’t read anything by this author before, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Overall, I thought the story was very interesting and unique. I have read countless books about magical people and magical schools, but nothing really like this at all. I enjoyed the world-building as it was super interesting! I also thought the premise of the story was new and interesting. There were only a few things that I didn’t really like or that could have made the book better for me. For one, I didn’t see much relationship building or romance building. It seemed that the characters kind of went from 0 to 100 seemingly out of nowhere. I wasn’t entirely sure where the feelings came from. I would have liked to see some actual build up and more interactions between the characters. There were also a few things about 2 of the guys specifically that I didn’t really like that much - Cash and Gray. There were some things about them with girls that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. However, overall it was a good book and the ending definitely leaves me interested in how the story will play out.
Tamsin Lee is really feeling bad about herself she has not received an acceptance letter from any school she applied to, she cannot understand it. She told her boyfriend and he was a real jerk about it. She gets home and gets a message from her brother that the she has a last chance to get into a college she has never heard but would need to be at the library in the morning. She cannot believe the recruiter that comes to her table and she really throws Tamsin off with her questions it is a first that Tamsin realizes that she has magic with in her and she never knew about it. With everything going on at the school soon Tamsin is about to drown and is tricked into doing something that sends her to depths of unconsciousness. Tamsin, Cash, Gary and Rye are in route to retrieve her most precious possession. This is a fascinating story with lots of action and the characters are great. There is all kinds of action that seems to be going on when Tamsin gets to Penrose U. Lots magic, an unusual relationship with her friends next door and an empty relationship with her roommates. Really good book it is a cliff hanger. I purchased this book read and reviewed without any obligation
What a great new take on magic, paranormals and the new college experience...all with a RH theme! Does it get any better?!? After thinking her life was in ruins and discovering that magic exists, Tamsin's life just gets weirder and weirder after being admitted to Penrose University as a new freshman. She meets some hot guys and mean girls and breaks at least two of the non-negotiable rules for expulsion within her first few months. But just as things get really crazy, she realizes that she actually has three good friends in the guys across the hall, Cash, Rye and Grey. They quickly become very close and are pushed to their very limits. There were several editing errors, especially in the second half of the book. But the story and characters made up for it. Looking forward to the next book in the series. And the bonus stories from Penrose University were fun to read too. Best "bonus" material I've read in a book - because they were actually somewhat related stories. I appreciate the consistency.
This is a paranormal reverse harem book 1 of 3 I believe.
Wow.... What an amazing story! It's about a girl who finds out at 19 years old, she has powers. Wanting to go to college and being valedictorian of her class, she is rejected by every college she applied for. Except someone wants her to go to Primrose, a school for magic. I'm not going to give you more details but I can tell you that when she meets and interacts with her 3 men, it's amazing! And there is enough going on in the book to keep you hooked! It's super hard to put down. Cannot wait for the rest of the series!
I would highly recommend this book to everyone! The author has a wonderful imagination and I feel lucky she has shared her world.
If you love paranormal and reverse harem of 3 guys, get this book!
There were parts of this book that worked but overall I found it difficult to stick with it. The scene with the recruiter in the beginning was the first strong scene for me and I though great, at last, I’m getting into this.
The next few chapters emerged us in the school and its quirks, which was necessary, but the early interactions with the boys next door was extremely limited. After some stupidity and hocus pocus -insta love. I’m also pretty sure she went from non- virgin to virgin in this too so, yeah, confused.
My feeling was it was too long. There were pacing and plot issues but the world building was strong. The characters felt two dimensional and therefore it wasn’t an easy read for me.
This may be a case of me just not connecting with the MC where’s someone else reading it may feel differently.
Tamisin finds out she has magical abilities and it changes all her plans. Her school introduces her to magic but doesn't prepare her for the danger.
This is an interesting start to the series. Tamisin meets Cash, Rye and Gray at school and find them all very attractive. They all have their own abilities and share her desire. It will be interesting to see what is next for them all. There are still many secrets out there and I especially want to learn more about the guys.
I can’t love this book more. I wasn’t sure I’d like Tamsin at first, but she totally grew on me. She’s like the female version of Harry Potter, but prettier and dealing with more bullying. Oh, and 3 boyfriends. The story was fun and fresh, but my gawd, the writing was amazing. The internal monologue and quips were hilarious. To me at least, but then I do also have a bit of a dark humor. I loved this book so hard and can’t wait to see what happens with the group next!
A great start to a new series. This story has a good story line with Tamsin who was a likeable character that ends up going to a Magic University and finds out she has lots of power. Three sexy guys that turn up the heat with some bad guys thrown in. Sadly the story left off on a cliffhanger which is one of my personal dislikes as I have to wait for the next book. This was overall a fun read! I am voluntarily reviewing an arc I received.
Tasmin is reeling from what she thought were her top three colleges turning her down. That was her chance to become a doctor and help heal her dad before it's too late. Not only did she not get in but, then her boyfriend of years breaks up with her! She was only accepted in one college Penrose University of Magic. Where she begins to unlock her magic. Magic she never even knew she was capable of. Lies and deceit keep her from her true path but, can she find her way?
I couldn't connect with the main character and the writing style kind of threw me for a loop. I found it harder to pick up the book than to put it down. I've read about 1/3 of the book. so I feel like I put honest effort into trying to get into the story. Maybe I'm just not in the right mind set. Would be willing to pick it up and try it again after a while. But right now this book just isn't for me.
It was nice coming back to Penrose School of magic and this was a full length story, the previous one was much shorter. This is all about the struggles of a naive first year student as she is set upon by the snobbish elite. Fortunately she has the help of three very strong males to see her through.
I loved this. I laughed out loud many times. The characters and the story were amazing. Though I was a little frustrated with one of the guys for a little while. I can't wait to read more, especially because of that cliffhanger. I mean... GEEZ. Oh and... Marzipan, Waffle, Highway. That made me laugh so hard.
Tamsin is allegedly really smart, but you could have fooled me. She gets into a school for magic and the only thing missing was the recruiter saying "you're a wizard Harry" I just couldn't deal, I gave up.
So I saw a lot of not so great reviews but I absolutely loved this book. I came to read it through the Lick of Fire series. There's magic, mundanes, different species, intrigue, and a stressful college experience. Great read. Can't wait to continue!
This was my very first time ever reading anything from this author so going into the story I didn't know what to expect, but you better believe that it's not going to be my last. I found this to be a very unique and interesting read. I don't recall ever reading anything like this before. One thing I will say that kinda bothered me was, there wasn't much relationships building for the instant love connection that Tamsin had all of sudden with her 3 guys. They all went from barely meeting to I'm so in love with you it seemingly came out of nowhere. It wasn't really realistic it would've been nice to see more interaction between all of them before the I love you is all I'm saying. Overall enjoyable and entertaining read and a good start for a new series. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received the opinions I have expressed are my own.

Tamsin worked hard to get into a good college where plans to study medicine. Unfortunately, she only gets accepted to a school she never heard of, Penrose University. Penrose is a school for magic users. Tamsin will attend the university, but through the machinations of a group of other students, she will find herself in grave danger. She is saved by the three young men that share the dorm room next to hers. Wow, this is a fantastic read filled with magic and mayhem. Fascinating, sometimes funny characters and a plot with surprising twists. I loved this book.
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
