I can be your best friend or your worst fucking nightmare.
The Savages are my family and the Badlands is our paradise. When that’s threatened, no one is safe. Carnage and chaos unfold around me. Loyalties are tested. Truths start to unravel.
When everything I know teeters on the verge of going up in flames, the only girl I tried to save, may end up saving me.
Blue
Old soul. Selfless. Unusually stable.
I was the good girl, the one who saw beauty in people.
When the devil marked me everything changed. The world I’ve been chained to is merciless and cruel. I was ready to leave it all behind, but then he found me again. He needed saving, I needed a reminder of who I was.
Nothing could prepare me for what came next.
Heathens is book 4 in the bestselling Badlands series. This is a complete story with no cliffhanger, however, books 1-3 must be read prior.
I don't have too much to say about this book. I loved this series, and I am glad I gave this one a read. However, it was by FAR the weakest book out of the three. It felt rushed, underdeveloped, and had some inconsistencies that bothered me.
I didn't like the whole Katya situation; I would have preferred he hadn't slept with her. And to the end, he tells Blue he slept with Katya once and got two blowjobs from her, but then a few pages later he says "I may do a lot of stupid shit, but I know better than to fuck the friend of the woman I want." Ahhh...I am pretty sure you JUST told her that you did INDEED fuck the friend of the woman you want and that she had your balls in her mouth?!
On top of that, the whole "baby" angle was completely pointless and was resolved way too conveniently. That said, even a mediocre Natalie Bennet book is still a enjoyable book, so like I said, I am glad I gave it a read and I can't wait to read about the next generation.
Heathens was the much-anticipated conclusion to this particular chapter of the series. Bringing forth some much-needed closure to this current generation of savages: but leaving the stage fully prepared for the next offerings of degenerates: this current casts fledgeling feral offspring. I am so entirely grateful that this is not my final foray into the dark decadent depths of the badlands. And I am very much looking forward to continuing on with this new set of individuals next year. That teaser at the end of "Heathens" looked so bloody delicious: I for one will definitely be on board for the upcoming journey. So here we get to catch back up with the gang after the events in the previous instalment. This time around we are focusing our attention on Cobra and Blue and for me as much as I did enjoy this there was something slightly missing; not enough of a something to stop my overall enjoyment here that was a given: I mean we are back in the bloody badlands duh!!! But "Heathens" for me, when held up against its predecessors was like the little brother of the bunch and didn't pack the full punch that the rest of the family themselves actually delivered. There were a few things here that bothered me: For one the Katya thing really bugged me. I would have prefered that Cobra had stayed away from her like completely. I felt like Blue got a bit of a raw deal and was almost shoved aside originally for Katya: Not cool a-tall Cobra. "Heathens" did some backpedalling fully explaining the actions behind Cobras faulty reasonings: for me, these excuses didn't really wash and I felt he got off extremely lightly. I also couldn't quite work out the deal with Katya because of discrepancies in her behaviour was she loyal to Blue or not. I mean at the end of book three she went postal when Blue was taken but later shes pretty much MEH about the whole thing: this did confuse me slightly. I also felt that Blue was much too forgiving and Cobra to loyal to his brothers over all else. I couldn't see Grim or Romero sitting on their arses instead of being pro-active: Blue was literally handed back on a platter to Cobra no major effort on his part which sucked hairy balls. Blue herself was also too nice a character for the Badlands: I would have liked her to make Cobra do some major sucking up and grovelling. I also wasn't happy with how the baby storyline played out. And finally, the ending for me also seemed slightly rushed and was a bit anti-climatic in nature. Look this was a mixed bag: but was still a solid four Star read and one that despite my moanings I still did enjoy very much. I know it may look overwise considering my above peeves but this is still a fantastic imaginative read. Natalie Bennett for me is an auto-buy and a four-star read out of her depraved mind is still a solid offering that I am ever so happy to recommend. So It just wasn't a complete full sweep: which is the norm for me here with this series. But No mind: It was, as usual, a decadent, depraved romp through a brutal badlands whereas its everything wrong that makes this just so fantastically right. Expect all the usual visual delights that you've come to expect from a Natalie Bennett novel: this instalment certainly delivers on them in spades. Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of "Heathens" (Badlands #4) of which I have reviewed voluntary. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I honestly don't know how to write a review for this. I feel like since the author basically said "fuck y'all" and just stopped writing, then it probably wouldn't make much sense to put in more effort than that for this review.
Nothing. That's all you get from this last fucking book. N.O.T.H.I.N.G.
I don't know who wrote Books 1 & 2, but it's not the same person who wrote Books 3 & 4. They're ENTIRELY different books. The only thing consistent in them is the fact they have more mistakes than there are pages.
I'd like to formally apologize to everyone I convinced to read this series based on my review of Book 1. My bad.
I'll try to find a way to apologize, and I promise not to write reviews for books that I haven't completed the entire series/trilogy/whatever for.
Heathens is book 4 in the Badlands series and the final book. I was looking forward to Cobra's book because he seemed the most unstable and when his past was revealed it was easy to see why. We met Blue and Katya in the previous book when Arlen helped them. I was annoyed when poor Blue was traded like she was a piece of meat. She was a really strong character and although she thought less of herself for what she had to do in life I thought it just made her stronger. Now Cobra's attraction to Blue didn't really make sense to me since he seemed taken with Katya but when they finally got together I really enjoyed them. Overall while I enjoyed this book I felt it was rushed but I do look forward to starting the Next Generation.
*I would strongly suggest reading the three books prior to this. The author states it can be read as a standalone, but you’d miss so much content since the storyline continues throughout.
Heathens is the last of the Badlands bunch, and Cobra & Blue’s story. We ended Outcasts with Blue being given to Vitus as collateral for Cobra’s child. It also continues the Venom/taking of Centriole storyline.
I've mentioned this before, but I really wish the author would dig a little deeper with relationship building. I was disappointed that the author dropped two (IMO) rather large points. 1. Cobra’s bisexuality- This has come up numerous times with his brand of torture, and his checking out Bryce. He tells Blue he sometimes “bats for the other team” but then it’s dropped. So, what was the point? 2. The Katya situation- I know the OW are always brushed away, but Katya was around with Blue. Also, it was brought up SEVERAL times that Cobra liked Kat. Looking past having sex and flirting with her, there’re also comments about him trying to make her jealous; Blue looking at him the way he looks at Katya, and her hearing Rome repeat that he said he didn’t want her. (Blue) BUT, this book downplays it, now he’s only slept with her once with two BJ’s (AFTER she was given to Vitus) and always wanted Blue. (even though in the beginning he says something like she's sat on my face so much that I have her pussy memorized) I just feel like it warranted a discussion since it overlapped. It felt like Katya was originally supposed to be the h, but then she changed her mind.
IMO the lack of relationship development was a bigger deal in this book because Blue wasn't around much, so we didn't already know her and had zero flirting around each other. Honestly, I felt like the whole book was rushed and lacked development. Blue's demons felt forced, it was like she got a new personality. The big reveal of "Cobra's demons" was dropped then quickly brushed aside when IMO it needed some discussion. The big "war": we've been working towards for four books was anticlimactic and over within pages. It really felt like this was an info dump/setup bridge to the kids rather than tying things up for the Savages.
Bottom Line- This was back to the 300-ish length, so it moved along quickly. It’s was probably my least favorite, but still enjoyable. I just wish a couple things were fleshed out better…including above, but also Rome & C’s fight over Tellie which was handled off-page. I also found the “parentage” totally confusing because we’re told the mom’s Beth (Arlen’s sis) and she even says her kid is Zane, but then we’re told Telly/Tillie/Tiffany was the mom. (??) On to the kids…....
So.... what just happened? This was supposed to be the ultimate ending to the first generation. But it was so underwhelming, I can't even explain to you what just happened. It just happened and that's it. I'm very disappointed.
Wow seriously wow. How the heck am I gonna review this story. Each and every book in this series has blown me away. Make sure you read the previous three books before you read this. You need to.
This is Cobras story. It’s also a story to connect this series to the next book. All will make sense when you read it.
Anyone that loves dark stories needs to read this series. It’s absolutely brilliant. If anyone told me before that a series with an underlying dystopian tone to it would be one of my favourite series ever I wouldn’t believe it but it’s the truth. I cannot praise this book or series highly enough. Cannot wait to read more by this author.
It’s kill or be killed. Man eats man. Survival of the sickest. Cannibals, gangs, and hedonistic warfare are what thrive in the Badlands.
I’m fucking SOBBING. 1. From relief that it’s finally over - because everything about the series was vague as hell. Except ALL. The. Murders. God, the murders were practically erotic in how detailed they were. Leviathans, skin farming, serrated knives, blood patterns, psychological breakdowns - I basically earned a fucking forensic science degree by the end of it. You know what wasn't described? Literally everything else. Heaven forbid we get a clear backstory.
2. From grief. Justice for COBRA. They paired that chaotic golden retriever of a man with a woman who has the personality of fucking drywall. I’ve seen IKEA instructions with more complexity. I don’t care if she has trauma - we all do, babe. Get a hobby.
The Badlands chewed me up and spat me out. I couldn’t tell you if I’m better off or just emotionally concussed. I still don’t know what the end goal was - revenge? redemption? extended trauma exposure therapy?
Either way, I guess I’m glad our Savages got their HEA. (Except you Blue, you absolute wet wipe)
I would give this last book a half ⭐️, if only GR knew what that was, but for the sake of Cobra, I’m giving it 2, because Natalie did him so dirty and I’m bitter about it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
omg is it finally Cobra’s time?! Please Natalie I beg you that this book has a plot 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
A bit boring which I wasn't expecting seeing as Cobra was always shown to be a bit crazier than the others imo. I thought he would at least be kinkier than Grimm but nope. He was actually the most tame. I also didn't like the whole subplot with Katya🙄 and how easily Blue was given up and yet Cobra was still getting off with Katya and had liked Katya more at first, and we didn't even get to so her die or anything 😤 The ending was also super anti climactic. The only things I like were any moments with Romero and Adelaide/Cali. Overall pretty disappointing.
Seeing "The End" I feel like I'm losing a piece of me. The Badlands series has been a favorite of mine since Savages came out. It introduced me to my love of dark romance and gave me all the tingles I needed with each man. Cobra was no different. Cobra has led a very long and hard life. They all have, but Cobra's touched me a bit more. We left off with Romero trading Blue for information. We start a few weeks later with Blue still missing and Cobra sinking further into the darkness. A lot happens in this book, a lot. While I'm sad to see them go, I'm happy to see the next generation.
Cobra fulfills all your dark needs. He is definitely hiding a ton of crap, but never hides who he is and what he wants. Which I love him for. Blue isn't as sweet and innocent as you believe. She's got a monster living under her skin and I wish we could have seen it more!
Natalie Bennett is, by far, one of my top three favorite authors. Heathens was fast paced but left me content knowing all these dark savages got their girl and lived to tell about it.
And i gotta say I'm abit disappointed.. i love Cobra in the other books and love him still but I thought he be more darkish or more like deadpool.. this book wasn't that dark to me very calm.. as for Blue she wasn't as crazy and killer as our other 2 gals.. she had some killer in her but wasn't to extreme she was almost to kind to be around this gang of killers.. but guess someone needs some light in their hearts..
Ill be honest im confused Cobra said this in the book
"I think we need to clear up a misunderstanding. I’ve only fucked Katya once. She’s had my balls in her mouth twice. I’m not in a relationship with her. I don’t want her.”
Then he said this
“I may do a lot of stupid shit, but I know better than to fuck the friend of the woman I want.”
Sooooo what's the truth???
Angst, ow drama, drama, secondary chars, sexy times, no virgins
I found this one a little calmer than the other three stories and while still deliciously bloody it didn't quite satisfy the bloodlust the other ones had.
Some shocking twists and turns and interesting characters, I am loving where Natalie is taking us in this series.
Unputdownable and unpredictable read! I'm eagerly anticipating more from this author!
Oh my gosh.. I can't believe it. I'll have to wait till January!! Degenerates are coming out in JANUARY! I love, love, love this series. I'm Just gonna reread it all over again. And again. I'm totally depressed. I need some Help. Screw that! I'd better rot in Hell with my favorite characters!⛧⛧⛧⛧⛧ A MUST READ!
TW at end of review Heathens by Natalie Bennett is the fourth book in the Badlands series and about Cobra and Blue. This book starts after the cliffhanger ending from Outcasts, book three, where Blue has been traded to Vitus (maybe?? it's the leader or at least some higher up in the Venom cult group). Cobra and Blue hadn't known each other long before she was traded, and Blue only appeared in Outcasts. Nevertheless, there's a connection there and it takes Blue being away from Cobra to realize that he cares about this girl. Cobra then ends up picking her up after Romero sets up her escape from the Venom. The two then return to the Savages base and continue fighting for power in the Badlands. There's a bunch of confusing stuff with the Venom and with the mayor of the Kingdom in Centriole, who is Arlen's uncle, Frank (his name just randomly pops up somewhere). The Savages are continuing to expand their empire and want to take down the city, The Kingdom.
I've read the first four Badlands books back to back, and I'm sure I'm getting stuff mixed up by now. It's difficult for me to even remember specific scenes and the sequence of events for each book because they all feel exactly the same and way too rushed, with poor descriptions. I liked how Blue was different from Calista and Arlen; it was a nice change of pace. Blue is quiet, she shows her emotions quite easily, and she's not full of bloodlust like the Savages are. Still, she's tough and a survivor. Cobra was also interesting because he's outgoing and almost cheerful. But he's also got his own rough past and you get to see into his history a bit in Heathens, which I appreciated. I felt like Blue and Cobra had some nice conversations, but they still didn't cover everything and their relationship took a kind of 180 with how they went from barely knowing each other to being obsessed and in love. As with the previous books, there were tons of grammatical errors and bad descriptions of everything that made the story very confusing to follow. The ending felt extremely rushed. And there were multiple characters that I was very confused about. Even though I recognized their names, I just couldn't remember what their reason for being involved was and who they were. This story felt like it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and it also felt really random to just end it where the author did. However, the series continues with the next generation, aka the Savages children. So there's going to be a huge time jump and I'm already confused with what went down in the first four books. Despite how poorly I've been rating this series, I'm still at least a little bit invested and the series is interesting at times.
TW: r*pe, suic*de, death, gore, murder, torture, cannibalism, rough s*x, kinky s*x, blood, weapons, abuse, mention of incest and pedoph*lia
5 Doubly Savage Stars Review by Amy W. Late Night Reviewer Up All Night w/ Books Blog
Natalie Bennett's Badlands series comes to an end, and oh what a way to go. Heathens is bloody, violent and full of debauchery. This series was a dark ride through the eyes of the depraved and I loved every minute!
In the end, I was simply a blue-haired girl who fell deeply in love with a redheaded heathen.
Cobra finally gets his girl, but not until they've both gone through hell. Blue was offered to the enemy in a crazy twisted form of an alliance. But in true Savage fashion nothing is what it seems. When these two are finally reunited blood spurts and lust sparks.
I knew a man like me was toxic for a woman like her, but that didn't stop me from wanting to drag her ass over to the dark side.
The pain that Cobra hides is extensive. He owes his life to his brothers, Rome and Grim, and his loyalty knows no bounds. Blue has had an equally tormented upbringing, but Cobra shows her that surviving doesn't mean that you are dirty. And so what if you are. I felt for the both of them, but was so glad they had each other to not heal the pain, but to walk in the darkness together.
"So what happens after I tell you that I'm kinda obsessed with your strand of sickness?"
Reading Heathens was bittersweet. It was the end of one of my favorite series ever, but Natalie Bennett didn't leave me to mourn the loss of these Savages for long. The next generation is coming next year!!!! I will be waiting, stalking for any crumb of what is to come.
The anticipated conclusion to this crazy world the Natalie Bennett created. The Badlands are just that, bad lands. There is evil and depravity lurking around every corner and deal are made with skin and death.
Cobra was the "fun" one of the three main players. The crazy red-head, with a devilish smile and filthy mouth. It helped with the story to see inside his head and his thoughts leading up to Heathens. I actually thought he was going to be with another person, so to see him have feeling for Blue made things a bit complex.
Blue, like all of the females we have met doesn't have a great story. Now she was traded to another pawn, just when she was planning on putting down some roots. At first glance you would think there is nothing to this girl with blue hair, that she is just complaint and does whatever she is told. There is certainly more to her than meets the eye.
There was a lot of history gearing up for this book. A war is brewing and it is going to be bloody. This was the end piece of the story arc so I was excited to get some answers and have all of the gaps filled in. The Badlands are no less dangerous, there is no shortage of backstabbing and lies, death and alliances to be had. Romero is certainly the master chess-player though and he made sure that his "side" was well equipped for the war.
There is definitely room for this story to continue as there are a bunch of spawn created. This was not my favorite of the Badland books, but it was an important piece to the jigsaw puzzle that is their lives.
If you cannot handle gratuitous violence, bestial sex, and unremitting anger.....
Back the fuck up.
Seriously.
Cobra is easily my favorite of the Savages. One, his sexual proclivities are almost beyond the pale even for the company that he keeps. But they love him even more for it. And two, of all the Savages, of all of the glee that Cobra takes in his depravity, you always have a sense of longing about him.
Heathens is the story of Cobra and Blue....and it is also about the final conflict between The Savages and Venom. A lot of the intrigue and unexplained madness of the first 3 books is finally answered in Heathens. The ultimate plans and plots of Romero are revealed with some very surprising effects. And what we learn about Cobra and Blue and their place in the greater scheme of things is more than we even expect!
Let me just start by saying this author is skilled at writing crazy, filthy and hot as hell shit. She has some great fucking ideas but somewhere in the excitement this skill fucking limp dicks its way into an ending.
I may not be making any fucking sense. Let me try again. . . This is the kind of book that you would use as a blueprint to build a laxative. A deceiving little shit that at first glance, doesn't look so bad, but then you've underestimated the amount of shit that comes from it.
This book took me several months and at least 5 times to finally fucking finish. I fucking loved Romero, wanted to lick Grimm and always got glimpses of the fucknut that was Cobra in the previous book but damn, What. A. Fucking. Waste.
The vital shit that is clearly needed for the next generation could have all been included in an epilogue for Grimms book and called it a day. Don't get me fucking wrong, there were parts that were just fucking awesome, that ended up with Cobra bathed in blood. But the story of Blue and Cobra was ass, straight up ass.
This series has been a favorite of mine. From Savages, to Deviants, to Outcasts, this ride has been one of gore, cults, satanic rituals, dirty sex, and all the dark delectable things I love. So when I say I was looking for the big bang, the final pop, the end of all ends; I did not reach that pinnacle. Heathens does not pack the same punch as the previous three.
While Cobra and Blue figure out how to play house, there is still the war on the city that has been in the works for some time. But when the time comes to take over the city, it seems more like a cakewalk into Centriole than the war that it should have been. It was anti-climatic and colorless.
Now don’t misread my comments, I enjoyed the book, I just feel it did not live up to the standards that the author set forth in the previous books. Heathen’s still has the warped, deplorable perspective of The Badlands that we have enjoyed and relished in, as well as the darkness and immorality of the characters.
Now onto new business. More of the BADLANDS!! I very much am looking forward to the next generation in Degenerates. The premise from the author in the excerpt is to be one of epic depraved proportions.
I’m giving this book 4 stars and I consider that generous.
I liked Cobra and Blue. They were not my favorite couple as I thought Blue was a little bit stupid and clueless.
The last few chapters were a big let down...MAJOR LET DOWN. I found it hard that Rome let Luther die and didn’t try to help or save him.
The secret regarding Tillie, Beth and Zane was a huge let down, I was thinking it that it?? I was disappointed...all those secrets that Rome hinted at though out book 1 and 2 were not revealed and I couldn’t believe that was that. This book ended the series and I have bought the next generation books and I’m so pissed that I might not even read them now. I was expecting to start them straight away but I think I will leave it a few weeks and calm down.
This was Cobra’s story but it was a kind of conclusion for them all - or is it? I’ve followed the series and it’s been a rollercoaster ride, the journey has just blown me away and this one needed to be written to gives a kind of grounding to the craziness. It also has an opening for another book and series which I’m looking forward to. The story was very fast paced and there wasn’t as much gruesome action in this instalment, it’s not as dark, but there’s still some violence. I would liked to have seen more of Cobra and Blue together, to show a bit more chemistry. But in the end it worked. This series is twisted and sometimes just sick and horrific. But if you like a dark read, I highly recommend it.
What a fantastic ending to this great series, and what an introduction to the new one coming. I loved this series from the start. Love the characters I just would love everyone who loves dark to read this series, this book is fast paced and will leave you content. Although I could read about these characters forever. I would say is the lightest of the series not as dark but just as amazing. I loved everything about it the writing is brilliant. This author is fast becoming one of my favorites. To sum up a series it is dark twisted and it will feel your black heart it is so good.
I like this series! Its kind like Mad Max sort of vibe. I liked Blue and her story was good. Cobra wasn't bad. His story was like that of his brothers, so nothing really new there. Overall it was a good story. My only issue was the ending. I thought it was rushed. I thought bringing down the city should have lasted more than what it did and I didn't understand why we did this 7 year time jump. One minute they were talking after the city was overthrown and next it was 7 years later in just a matter of a few pages.
Blue and Cobra were a match made in heaven JUST like everyone else in the gang. Ruthless, cunning, soulmates. I am absolutely smitten with these savages. I am also so so so sad that this series is over 😭 But I am glad the next generation is here atleast. Diving right into Romero and Cali's little crazy daughters book now. I bet she will be wild like her mother. I wish this series could go on forever. I love them so much. 5 starsssssss
For the last book in the older generation of Savages I felt everything was rushed especially Cobra’s and Blue relationship. Plot had a glimpse of the bloodshed and grit that I always love when get in a Natalie Bennett read but this was toned down from the others in this series. Loved Romero and Cali’s moments.
Another great great from Natalie Bennett! I absolutely love this series and I'm glad that Heathens was just as raw and dirty and the previous books. Cobra and Blue are perfect together and the continuation of the story line kept me reading and wanting more.
This one was kind of disappointing for me...overall I really liked this series, in a sick and twisted sort of way ;) there are more books to read, the next generation, but that will have to wait while I take a break from the mayhem!
This was another awesome book in the series. I always love a badass male lead who has a soft spot for his lady. Cobra had a rough tenderness when it came to Blue, and I loved all the twists and turns in their story.
