Uncanny Valley #2

The Silver Six

Rate this book
What is it that makes us truly human?

Rebecca Cordeaux’s entire world has been turned upside down. In a single day, she’s learned that Senate Leader Halpert and his Board of Advisors are actually illegal humanoid robots created underground twenty years ago—and they tried to have her killed. Her mother Karen, whom she always believed to be passionately against the cause of the Renegades, turns out to be their leader. And Liam, a man she never thought she cared for, is now fighting for his life—and she finds that she cares desperately.

Fortunately Karen, known to the Renegades as M, has planned for exactly this sort of eventuality. Using Rebecca’s father’s blueprints, Karen patiently built an underground compound in an abandoned part of the Americas where they can regroup and plan for the coming war. The compound becomes an unlikely oasis as their number grows, both on accident and on purpose. In attempting to recover her best friend and companion bot Madeline, Rebecca gets what she thought she’d always wanted: Andy arrives at the compound too, along with her friends Jake and Julie. But with the sudden addition of an old flame from Liam’s past, Rebecca discovers just how little acquainted she has been with her own heart.

Meanwhile, the Silver Six are running a worldwide campaign of indoctrination to ensure that the people are on their side. In the name of peace, they want nothing more than to wipe out every shred of resistance, while pursuing their ultimate goal of robotic superintelligence. With the assistance of a neuroscientist who helped to build the Silver Six decades ago, Rebecca attempts to understand how synthetic minds work, hoping this information can be used against them. She’s sure that the mysterious, brilliant, and beautiful Alessandra Russo is the key somehow, but Alex’s hatred for the Silver Six is only matched by her hatred for the Renegades. Can the Renegades find and exploit the weakness of the Silver Six before synthetic intelligence passes the point of no return?

C.A. Gray is the author of three YA Amazon bestselling trilogies: PIERCING THE VEIL (magic and quantum physics meet Arthurian legends), THE LIBERTY BOX (dystopian metaphysics and mind control technology), and UNCANNY VALLEY (dystopian coming-of-age with neuroscience and super intelligent A.I). She starts with some scientific concept that she’s interested in learning more about herself, and then creates lots of epic chaos and high-stakes action to go along with it. Her stories are free of gratuitous violence, language, and sexual content, and she abhors depressing endings… but they’re not all kittens and rainbows either! She also listens to and reviews audiobooks on her website, here on Goodreads, on Instagram, and on her podcast, Clean Audiobook Reviews, where she also occasionally interviews other authors.

By day, C.A. Gray practices naturopathic medicine, podcasts, and writes medical non-fiction under her maiden name (Dr. Lauren Deville). She lives in Tucson, AZ with her husband Frank, and together they maintain an occasionally contentious film review blog (under her real name: Lauren Baden. Three names. Yes.) She’s kind of the queen of multitasking—so in her spare time, she creates whatever meals or crafts she found most recently on Pinterest, drinks lots of coffee (Aeropress btw) and occasional wine (reds—and she saves the corks for craft projects), works out (while listening to audiobooks), and studies the Bible—about half of the podcasts on Christian Natural Health are scripture meditations.

She does sleep, too. Promise.

Her father died for his beliefs. Her mother always downplayed her father’s activities. Rebecca was hardly prepared to discover that the mysterious M, the leader of the renegades, the force behind an underground revolt was Karen, or as Rebecca called her, “Mom.” She also learned that Senate Leader Halpert and his cronies were illegal humanoid robots created two decades before. And then there is Liam, perhaps the biggest revelation of all, owns real estate in Rebecca’s heart, even as he lies fighting for his life. What a difference a day makes…

Now hunkered down in an underground fortress, this ragtag group of renegades must devise a plan to take Halpert down while gaining support for a war that surely will be coming. As their group grows in numbers and expertise, dark secrets are revealed, enemies become conditional allies and the young man Rebecca thought she loved turns out to have as much depth as a piece of tissue paper.

How can the renegades expose Halpert as he systematically brainwashes the world with his propaganda, his synthetic intelligence and those chips humans wear? They call for peace as they contrive to destroy all who oppose their iron-fisted control. Their reach is everywhere and it is only a matter of time until Rebecca and her group are found, all it takes is one thoughtless mistake…

THE SILVER SIX by C.A. Gray does more than “add to the story” of book one in the Uncanny Valley series, it propels it into a new dimension of science fiction, dystopian reading! The baton has been handed off and book two breaks out at a full run!

New characters, new twists, new levels of danger, intrigue and even good old fashioned human jealousies, as well as tense, intellectual interactions make THE SILVER SIX a fabulous read from start to finish! Imagine being hidden away, fighting for humanity’s future, not sure who you can trust, who you even want to trust and how long you have to live as a bullseye has been painted on your backs by beings who shouldn’t even exist! Then imagine finding that your heart must have hope for the future, because through it all you find romantic feelings for someone. Humanity, at its best and bravest fighting to survive against beings of its own creation…C.A. Gray’s writing is spellbinding, earthy and alive!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from C.A. Gray!

This is the second book in the Uncanny Valley series. We follow Rebecca and the other Renegades to their hideout where they try to come up with a plan to strike back at the Robots taking over the government.
Gray returns to a theme she explored extensively in her “Liberty Box” series. She looks at how willing people are to accept a pleasant lie over an unpleasant truth. I think she’s a little more optimistic in this series, suggesting that it might be difficult to sell the lie. She expresses a faith in the human race more than was apparent in the other series.
She also digs deeply into the motivations of her characters as they lay their most fundamental drives and desires out for inspection. They have to understand the differences in the way they think and feel and the way the robots think and feel. They no longer have the luxury of self-delusion.
This is a fascinating series and I can’t wait to start the next book.

Re-listen 12-12-21:

I think this book is my favorite of this trilogy. I just loved writing the relationships between all the characters. But once again, on this re-listen I was startled by the ideas that were then only barely on the horizon, and just a few short years later, they're now all over the news. This one is less about censorship of information (that was already established as part of this world in Uncanny Valley) and more about the progress of transhumanism and how the gatekeepers of power, especially those in media and entertainment, can use their stories to shape the values of the public. That, too, I feel has become incredibly overt in the last few years--to the point where I rate the "political content" in all the books I review on my website (and if it's too heavy handed I'll stop reading altogether).

Today (May 15, 2018) is release day! :)

I love writing this series because, perhaps more than any other series I've written so far, the characters feel like my friends. The action and intrigue is always fun to write, too, but my favorite scenes are the ones that deepen relationships. Rebecca even gets to perform again--something I always hoped I'd be able to give her the chance to do, but wasn't sure how it would fit into the plot!

Every series I write also requires a certain amount of research into some area of science that I only knew a little about to start. This one involves primarily neuroscience and psychology concepts, and I found the research really fascinating. Translating those concepts to dialogue helps to solidify my own understanding, too--and (to me at least) makes it that much more "practical".

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

After reading Uncanny Valley and with how it ended, I couldn't wait to jump straight into this one. The Silver Six kicked right off where we left off. Rebecca is coping with finding out the identity of M and as well as the existence of the Renegades. She quickly learns to face her fears and step-up to help using her skills in the field of science to aid in any way she can.

C.A Gray is a fantastic writer and The Silver Six didn't disappoint. The characters are wonderfully written and I loved getting to learn more about them. It was great to finally learn more about Becca's Mother and just how much influence she had within her world and with being the leader of the Renegades.

All the characters are wonderfully human. They have faults just like anyway and make mistakes along the way. The characters are totally relatable and I cannot wait to see them develop and change even more in the next book.
The sci-fi and dystopian elements of Uncanny Valley are propelled into a new dimension and I loved it even more than the first.

The Silver Six is a book full of conflicts, emotion, relationships and betrayals. I love C.A Gray's writing and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with in her next book.

When I read or, rather, listened to Uncanny Valley, the first book in the trilogy, I was pulled into a vortex of misdirections and revelations, especially towards the end and that alone made me anxious to read the next book. The Silver Six is every bit as intriguing as the first book.

Now that Rebecca and the rest of the Renegades know that the Silver Six, lead by Halpert, are actually robots, all the earlier conspiracy theories have been proven correct. War is inevitably coming and the Renegades must plan for it while they work to subvert Halpert’s propagandizing. That in itself is perhaps the most critical part of their fight because humans are so gullible, easy prey for the lies that are so much more comfortable than truth.

And because life goes on, no matter the circumstances, Rebecca can’t help being distracted by the two young men vying for her attention. As so often happens, one of them will be found wanting but is it possible that the Resistance will be affected by this?

Melissa Williams is a better than average narrator, easy to understand and with good pacing. I couldn’t always distinguish one character from another but that didn’t impede my enjoyment of a strong tale with lively action. I appreciate this second book as much as the first; come back tomorrow to see what I think about the trilogy’s conclusion .

I will admit that with the end of Uncanny Valley I was reluctant to start The Silver Six. I will freely admit that this book took off and had me on the edge of my seat. There is a war coming but it is going to be hard to find followers for the Renegades as the Silver Six have been brainwashing those into following them.

Of course Becca is causing herself more problems as she tries to process the truth she has learned and figure out how she really feels about Liam. But there is no much more than just Becca. We are talking about the fate of humanity. Will people stand up and fight for what is right or will they just go along with the group because it is easy.

There is a lot happening in this book. We have the robots verses people theme but we also have individuals trying to find their place in this world, those willing to fight although things look bad, and so much more.

I admit that I am officially hooked on this series. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Pro: It picks up right where book one left off. Con: It comes to a screeching halt at the end, just like book one did! Once again, I'm left with the "What happens next??" panic, except this time I know there's another book. I took the precaution of downloading part two *and* three of the trilogy at once.

I finished "The Silver Six" in a day, eager to continue the story as soon as I realized that "The Uncanny Valley" had been the start of a trilogy. The story and the characters were compelling enough to keep me from focus on anything else today. I just had to keep coming back to find out what would happen next.

This is the first thing I've read by C. A. Gray, but I already checked to see what other books and/or series are available. I can easily see Gray becoming one of my favorite authors!

Gotta go...book three is waiting... :)

I really loved this book and how Becca is following in her father's footsteps to try to help people know the truth. Another element in this book that I found interesting is that you find out more Becca's mother and how even though in the first book you think she is such a big figurehead in the first book as M, she is really just also trying to do the best that she can. I love Rebecca and Liam's relationship together. Overall this was a really great book that I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It involves a group of higher intellect and with higher purposes in mind...along with a variety of robots, cyborgs and the like. You get to experience the good times with this crew, along with the bad...and even ride the roller coasters known as jealously, adoration and love. This book will definitely keep you guessing, and the characters are a delight to get to know. If you are a fan of sci-fi that involves robotics, you will love this series, though I'd recommend starting with book 1.

Ah!!!!!!!! So good! I wish I could get together with a bunch of other people to talk about what they think will happen next! I couldn’t put this book down and read it in less than a day. Also, I completely and totally laughed out loud in one of the scenes. Truly! I mean, for quite an extended period of time too! It was like I was actually there with the characters, experiencing what they were experiencing with them. I really liked the first book but I LOVED this one!!! I can’t wait for the third one to come out! Ah!!!!!!!! Great plot. Great characters. Great fun!!!!

Excellent 2nd book in the series. CA Gray knows how to capture my attention. I couldn't put it down. This book has the same intensity as the first but I felt more connected to the characters, so I am even more anxious to find out what happens in book 3. Plot twists, surprises and some setbacks make for an exciting read!

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

Even better than the first book. I even woke up in the middle of the night wanting to get back to the book! Fantastic world-building, richly developed characters - I was completely engrossed. Hated to have to buy the third book to finish the story, but well done you - I bought the third book to finish the story!!

That was a really great read. In my opinion this book can be read as a stand alone, but you would benefit from reading book 1 (The Uncanny Valley) first. If you like possible alternative World futures, conspiracy, robots, cyborgs, young love, family twists this book has it all.

This was a story that could very well be our future. Since i won't be around, I'll just have to take my word for it. It reminded me of the science fiction shows that I used to watch growing up. The one thing I wasn't happy about was that the book came to an end. The good thing is that I've got the third book in my library ready to go. But I did feel slightly shortchanged since I haven't read book one - will have to get that changed.

I thought that Ms. Williams did a good job at bringing both the character, Rebecca Cordeaux, and her world to life. She sucked me into the story so that I felt a part of what was going on. The issue I had was that Rebecca seemed to have a high pitch voice. For people that are hearing sensitive, it makes it hard to concentrate on what she's saying. I kept having to play with the volume which did take a iittle away from what was going on. I'm interested to see if that continues in book three.

This book shows what a creative mind Ms. Gray has. She takes us on a journey into a world where bots have a humanoid appearance as well as thoughts. The book/movie from my youth was 2001: A Space Odyssey. This book takes it a step further. It might be a warning of what could happen if we're not careful. By the time I got to the end, I decided that having an "e" copy of the book wouldn't be a bad thing.

I voluntarily reviewed an Audiobook copy of this book.
