What makes this book more interesting than other books about past players for a team is that not all the profiled players were stars. Some of them had very little history while wearing a Red Sox uniform. For each player there is a page with a photo as well as a summary of his best season with the Red Sox.
For example, a profile of Don Gile begins on page 96. During his best season with the Red Sox, he appeared in 8 games and had 18 at bats. In his best season with the Red Sox, Jack Baker appeared in 12 games and had a batting average of .130. The most interesting profile of the men that were not stars is that of Carroll Hardy. He has the unique distinction of being the only man to pinch hit for Ted Williams.
The emphasis is on players that were still alive when the book was published in 2005. If you are a fan of the Boston Red Sox, this collection of summaries of the after baseball lives of some of the Red Sox players is interesting. What is refreshing about the profiles is that there is no real bitterness regarding their careers and there were no tales of struggling to survive after their baseball careers were over.

Life Beyond the Park
“For years, Billy Conigliaro never set foot inside Fenway Park. It had nothing to do with bitterness, or unresolved issues with management or geography. No, Conigliaro was still living in the Boston area within easy access of the ballyard he once called home but Conigliaro was one of those players whose life, along with with family circumstances, took him in a different direction.
He worked as a professional photographer. He opened a camera store. He ran a country club. And then he started to renovate houses, eventually earning his contractors licence.”(18)
Many people have many other careers after playing for the Red Sox and many other professional sports. This is shown in the passage above from the novel “Where Have You Gone?” where former Red Sox player Billy Conigliaro’s many different careers. “Where Have You Gone” by Steve Buckley shows what former Red Sox players have done with their lives after playing ball. This is done through the narrator having a conversation with the reader and emphasizing that the players such as Billy Conigliaro have diverse lives outside of baseball.

Conigliaro also ran a country club and was a photographer in his days after being with the Red Sox along with owning a camera store, renovating houses, and being a contractor on top of having a family to look after and make a living for. This shows how creative Conigliaro and many others like him had to be in order to make a living for themselves and their families.
Some People never show their face in the game again but, some of these people even come back to the game years later, not to play the game but to teach. They become coaches and managers to help these teams develop with the coming generations such as Conigliaro did in the early seasons of the 21st century when he was 57. Many like conigliaro do this because they love baseball and it is a part of their lives.
Many of these people are still around today. People who weren’t the stars, the big names of the game but still played big roles in the game and in society after they left. These are the people who don’t play to get rich or become famous, but they play because they love the game of baseball. I wouldn give this book four out of five stars because it really gives the reader an insite of what happens to the pros after they retire from the game. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a interest for baseball or sports history.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it gave a great history of the Boston Red Sox. It talked about where the players went after their careers in baseball and I found it very fascinating. My favorite was Jim Lonborg because he became a dentist after his career with the Red Sox and I found that interesting.
