Two young men from two different One a Plains Indian schooled from youth in war, the other a reluctant warrior driven into uniform by family tradition, the two riding toward a collision course in a deep canyon called Palo Duro in the Texas Panhandle and High Plains. One has everything a man could want; the other yearns for something he cannot have. This is the story of the Red River War, the final major campaign fielded by the U.S. Cavalry under Col. Ranald S. “Bad Hand” Mackenzie’s Fourth Division against the coalition of Comanche and Kiowa warriors led by famed Quanah Parker. This historical novel of the four-year campaign tells both sides of the conflict—through the eyes of the Indian warrior called Badger and the young horse soldier named Ned Justine—and the long, winding trail destined to bring the two face-to-face in one final battle on the Texas frontier. It also is a portrait of two vastly different cultures that could never coexist.

Although fictionalization, this is a well researched tale of true events. Throughly believable well rounded characters take the reader through the moments of struggle and pain as the story of the American West exploded. This saga let's the reader see both sides of the days and endless nights of rain, snow, and devastating heat on the little known nor understood land of the stake plains. Enjoyable read and a real learning experience.
There's nothing more relaxing than after a long day at work, to come home and read Mr. Sheltons Comanche story! The story expressed the good and wholesome aspects of Indian life as well as it's oftentimes brutality. The army corporals life held equal suspense ! Well written informative and entertaining!
Gene is the best writer of western novels, period. I say this as a fellow writer of novels, albeit in a different genre. I've read most of Louis L'Amour's westerns, enjoyed them too, but where L'Amour got details of mountain ranges correct, Shelton is familiar with real western history. Read his books. You'll understand.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, a enjoyable and interesting book that captures and holds the readers attention. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys western and military historical fiction
Fantastic book. Gives the reader the story from the Army viewpoint and also from the Indian’s point of view. Very well written with great character development. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.
Most impressive, two different sides, told from two different angles. Let the truth be known, the plains Indians are no more, their lives scattered to the wind, lost in life like the buffalo, killed by stupidity. Very well written telling a great story. Rock on
This book is well written, historically accurate enough and fast paced enough to keep your interest. Not overly gruesome but it does contain ver the brutality of the Plains Wars.
