4 - "It's meant to be." Stars!
It always feels like it's been too long since I have read anything by Kellie Hailes, when I start a new book by her, so it was with a certain level of excitement that I started The Little Unicorn Gift Shop, and once again the author didn’t disappoint.
"No sharing, no boundary crossing, you understand..?"
Ben and Poppy’s story is one of friends reconnecting after Poppy has spent twelve years travelling the world. Ben has stayed in the UK, living a 9 to 5 existence. Poppy’s return heralds big change, for the both of them, with their destinies entwining again, as they join forces to open a gift/tea shop together.
He’d always been the solid, dependable one…
Poppy is all things Unicorn, with glitter and sparkles galore, while Ben is all things tea, with cakes and treats in abundance, and never the twain shall meet. Which proves a rule a little difficult for rebel Poppy to adhere by, and on more than one occasion, much to Ben’s easy-going frustration.
There’s no point in entertaining feelings from the past. They’d gotten him nowhere then, they weren’t going to get him anywhere now…
As the business grows for them both, so do their feelings rekindle for each other, both are initially reluctant to look at anything other than friends, but as both of them deal with difficult parts of their pasts, the support the other provides when one is in need soon highlights to them both that they have the potential to be so much more than just friends and business partners.
"I think good things are going to come of this…"
It’s pretty easy to see where the drama will inevitably come from for this couple, and I thought the author gave it just the right amount of page time, enough that I wanted to slap the characters upside the head and tell them to get their heads out of their bums, but not enough that I started disliking either of them. I have to admit it was more of a struggle with one of them, but cleverly inserted reminders of what had occurred during their childhoods, and giving more character depth with each revelation helped me keep the frustration at bearable levels.
If you are looking for a little escape from reality, with rainbows, unicorns, and sparkle aplenty, likable characters and a really decent story-line, then I would certainly not hesitate to recommend that you give The Little Unicorn Gift Shop a read.

Before I started reading this i had forgotten how much I had enjoyed this author previously, which may explain why the book was on my kindle for months unread, despite my best intentions
However from the first couple of pages I was smiling and knew I would thoroughly enjoy this story, which I did.
Poppy's joy for life and her love of all things unicorn had me addicted to her from the first moments. She is bubbly and loves nothing more than unicorns, glitter and sparkle!
She is returning from over a decade of travelling, and coerces her best friend from school to share the shop he was purchasing with her.
Thus is born Sparkle and Steep - unicorn gift shop in one half and an elegant teashop in the other, Only one small problem, Ben isn't keen on unicorns!
This is a joyous story, full of laughs, moments when you want to knock Poppy and Ben's heads together, and and all round happy vibe to it.
There is depth, character development, a lovely story which is easy to read and hopefully means that I will bumping the next book by this author up my TBR a lot faster. Simply put I adored this book.

3'5 estrellitas.
Una lectura muy dulce y bonita, perfecto ejemplo de libro nadista y monoplatillesco, con el añadido de ser un friends to lovers cuqui (si es que eso te gusta, claro). No pasa nada, na-da, lo importante aquí son los personajes y su relación sentimental, nada más. Eso no quiere decir que sea un mal libro, es perfecto para cuando quieres leer algo sin dramas (bueno, algo de dramita tiene que haber, claro, pero muy poca cosa), una historia de amor que te haga sentir bien y te mantenga la sonrisilla perenne en la boca. Si buscas algo con intensidad, drama y megagestos de amor, esta lectura no es para ti.
Está lleno de gente buena, nada de personajes retorcidos (hay algún conato de conflicto pero no se desarrolla porque todo el mundo es más bueno que el pan). El más bueno de todos es Ben, el protagonista, no se puede ser más perfecto (en serio, no tiene pega alguna, mejor ejemplo de héroe beta no hay, genial amigo, inteligente, buenorro, capaz de amar eternamente y, encima, sabe hacer dulces #MeLoEnvuelvaParaLlevar). Poppy es su perfecto contrapunto y la verdad es que el hecho de que sean tan distintos y se lleven tan bien genera situaciones bastante divertidas.
Eso sí, este libro es chick lit, o sea, que ellos se meten al dormitorio y nosotras nos quedamos fuera #Indignación! XD
En fin, que es una lectura entretenida como muchas otras lo son, para echar el ratito y ver que los personajes de los libros pueden tener una vida estupenda y tú, no. Uy, he dicho eso en alto? Vaya... XDDDDD

I loved this book.It was so warm and cosy , filled with great friendships, a romance trying to blossom and wonderful unicorns everywhere! You could feel Poppy's enthusiasm in making her shop a success.
Poppy and Ben were childhood friends and she comes back from travelling the world and plans share shop premises with Ben. He's opening a lovely tea shop with delicious flavours and she is taking over the other side of the shop with everything Unicorn, including onesies!
It was lovely to see how Ben tries to win Poppy's love as she is very wary of letting anyone love her due to a troubled childhood.
I coud just imgaine walking into the tea shop and having to buy something from the gift shop before leaving.

The Little Unicorn Gift Shop by Kellie Hailes is a delightful, warm, tender and fun contemporary novel. It is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The infectious joie de vivre is definitely catching. It is a book of high energy. "You run on pure enthusiasm."
The main themes are of friendship and love. Some friendships are just made for life. The years and miles cannot diminish them.
A belief that a character is unlovable will just break your heart. "The harsh whisper... reminding her that she wasn't good enough. She wasn't worth loving." Our early years experience will set our foundations for life. Protecting our heart is key - but one can only run for so long. Sooner or later we must face our fears and our past.
Love blossoms in the novel. The reader catches the budding and developing even though the characters try to disguise it.
It was a pure delight to witness the banter between the leading characters - amusing and cheeky in a 'carry on' humour sort of way. A zest for life contrasts with a more cautious approach. The result was explosive chemistry.
The novel is a light hearted read but dig beneath the surface to expose pain that will break your heart.
Finishing the novel has left me smiling. I loved the friendship, business venture and huge hearts to be found within the pages. Give yourself a pick-me-up today and buy The Little Unicorn Gift Shop.

I'm going to sound a bit bad here, but there was a little part of me that couldn't help thinking that I wasn't going to like this book, all because I don't see the fascination with unicorns. However, before anyone asks me why I chose to read the book with that thought in my head, it was also the unicorns and the fact that they were going to be living in a gift shop (the unicorns, not the characters) which piqued my interest at the same time. I mean, why unicorns? Why a gift shop?
It didn't take me too long to find out the answers to both of those questions, nor did it take me long to find out that my original opinion of the book was in fact a load of tosh, making me hold my hands up and shouting, 'I FLUFFYUNICORN LOVE THIS BOOK'. I am not even exaggerating either. What a fantastic read this is and, in my opinion, it is Kellie Hailes' finest book to date. 'The Little Unicorn Gift Shop' has everything I adore from a book in this genre; romance, humour, colourful pasts, a character who puts a spanner in the works, and two main characters who are trying to battle their own individual devils. The concept of Kellie Hailes' latest release was unique, hilarious and so more-ish. In fact, I'd even go as far to say that unicorns have grown on me a tad too! I won't be making my jammy dodgers glittery anytime soon though, and no that is not a euphemism! Oh god, now I have an image in my head that I really didn't want!!
Poppy isn't your 'typical' girl next door type of character, she is the type of character who was made in a broken yet fabulous mould. Basically one of us. Yes, she has her own emotional scars to deal with, but how many of us don't? She isn't perfect, but then again what constitutes as perfection where people are concerned? I loved her personality and I found her character to be extremely hilarious and totally genuine. I have everything crossed that Kellie Hailes brings Poppy and Ben back in another book as I would love to see what they get up to next.
I have been known to invest myself in one character in a book, but it is rare that I ever invest myself in both of the main character from the same book. However, that all changed when I stepped foot into 'Sparkle and Steep'. Goodness, I may have even found my most favourite duo yet - these two are fabulous and Ben's lack of confidence is weirdly endearing. Okay, the unicorn aspect of the book makes the storyline what it is, yet I have to give the author a round of applause for creating two enchanting and memorable characters who completely and utterly stole my heart.
Well.....aside from Joe's uniform...obviously. Hellooooo, envious!
'The Little Unicorn Gift Shop' is the perfect antidote to a rainy day. The perfect thing to turn a frown upside down. And, I can't believe I am about to say this....but Kellie Hailes' book is even better than a bar of chocolate. I cannot recommend this book enough, I want to read it all over again - utterly divine!

Hands up if you love unicorns *puts both hands in the air*
There is just something magical about them, isn’t there? All that sparkly, glittery, rainbow-coloured lushness. And age is of no significance *shakes head* No comment from the gallery please *frowns*
So, as you can imagine, I was all grabby hands with this book. It looked like a hoot, and boy, could I do with a laugh.
Ben Evans is a man with a plan. Only the return of his childhood best friend puts a bit of spanner in the works. His gourmet tea shop has now become a hybrid with Poppy’s unicorn gift shop. Some things you just can’t plan for *shrugs* Just as long as nothing pink or glittery ends up on his side of the shop *snorts* Yup, let the fun commence...
After travelling for over a decade, Poppy Taylor is ready to return home, or should I say, ready to return to the person who feels like home. Now don’t go getting yourself confused. Poppy doesn’t do love, or so she thinks. Her childhood has left an indelible mark. This girl’s heart is a patchwork of cracks that not even the power of unicorns can heal. One wrong move... yeah, you get the picture.
Flinging herself head first into making this joint venture with Ben a success, Poppy tries to ignore her burgeoning feelings for her best friend. But, just as in the past, some things can’t be ignored. Running away didn’t solve both her problems the first time. Maybe it’s time to take the unicorn by the horn and stop running.
Pfft, I honestly thought these two were going to give me an ulcer at some points. No amount of shouting at my kindle or gesticulating wildly was getting through to them. Talk about being at cross purposes. You know what they say about assuming anything, don’t you? It makes an ass out of you and me *snorts* I understand their need to protect themselves, but, come on people, communicate! No jumping to conclusions, or assuming you know what’s best for someone. For the love of all things glittery - talk!

There were a few laugh out loud moments that had me snort-giggling. The whole drawers conversation had me holding my sides #epic

This novel is charming and funny to read along.
Poppy Taylor is fully committed to making her business partnership with Ben successful, despite her growing romantic feelings for him. However, she realizes that she cannot ignore her emotions forever and running away from them in the past didn't work. She decides it's time to confront her feelings and stop avoiding them.
Ben Evans is a man of careful planning, but the unexpected return of his childhood best friend complicates matters. His upscale tea shop is now intertwined with Poppy's whimsical unicorn gift shop, creating a unique hybrid concept. Despite his resistance to anything overly pink or glittery, he is ready to embrace the unexpected and let the fun begin.
Despite their past closeness, Poppy's travels have caused a rift between them. Now that she's back, she wants to rekindle their friendship and maybe even start a romance. Will their new business venture and personal issues get in the way of their relationship?

Desperation at having to wait over an hour for a train made me pick this from a rather poor selection of tatty paperbacks on a charity bookshelf at the station. And I’m glad I did: it’s made for the perfect, light and cosy train and plane read on my travels.

An interesting premise but not enough about the shop/cafe. Full review to follow.
A rather sweet story about Poppy and Ben, who have been best mates since childhood. Poppy is unicorn obsessed – lucky for her, because unicorns have been in vogue for a while now, and after she’s returned from travelling for quite some years, decides now is the time to combine her love of the legendary creature with her business ideas, and start a unicorn gift shop.
Getting back in touch with Ben, she finds that he wants to turn his back on the world of the corporate lawyer – rather like Making Plans For Nigel, this was the dream of his parents for him, rather than his own – and go into business running a café. Why not combine the two? Poppy manages to convince Ben to share the shop premises, and they’re up and running. Well they will be, just so long as Poppy keeps the unicorns well away from Ben’s café.
Both of them are products of their upbringing in very different ways, and the story explores their childhood, friendship and romance. It covers some interesting ground, but what disappointed me was the lack of focus on the respective businesses which was sacrificed to develop the relationship. We had a baby shower in the café and a little girl buying something from the shop, but other than this nothing about the various people that came and went into the shop or the café, and I think the story was weaker for this. The Unicorn Gift Shop felt like an incidental, rather than a main character.
But I am a unicorn fan myself. And I actually believe they are real. Truly.

I wasn't sure if it was a 3 or 4 star read. I really enjoyed the story. It was the perfect light-hearted read I was looking for. However there were a good few mistakes throughout the book and the writing wasn't record breaking so for me it let the book down. A good edit and it would have gone up in my books (excuse the pun).

I have a confession to make (this is fast becoming a habit). I have to admit that I have never read any of Kellie’s previous books. I do like discovering a new author and I always love starting a new book. So it was with some excitement that I picked this book up and began to read. I really enjoyed reading this book but more about that in a bit.
I have to be honest and say that I didn’t immediately take to the characters of Poppy and Ben, as to start with both of them irritated me in different ways. Poppy got up my nose a bit with her attitude. She rings Ben in the middle of the night and tells him that she is returning home and she wants him to pick her up from the airport. Honestly if somebody had done that to me then I would have probably said a few fruity rude words and I would promptly switch the phone off. I don’t function well when I have disturbed sleep. She wants to open a shop just stocking unicorn merchandise. Then we have Ben who seems to be an old man and very set in his ways. He qualified in the legal profession and has been working in the field ever since. However his heart isn’t in his legal career any more and he wants to open up a gourmet tea room with lots of lovely homemade cakes and biscuits. I just wanted to know when could I visit the shop? He just needs to learn how to relax. However as the story continued I realised that both characters were a product of their backgrounds and what they had been through had made them into the people that they are today. Poppy and Ben have grown up together and have a shared history. Eventually I did take to them and by the end of the book I was so wanting them to forget the past and just get together. Will they get together? Well for the answer to that question you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
It took me a little while to get into this book because the characters were annoying me a bit, but once I got into the story then I became hooked on ‘The Little Unicorn Gift Shop’. I just had to read on and on to see if Poppy and Ben realised how the other person felt about them and if they just got together. I also had to keep reading on and on to see how the two of them could house their respective retail ideas within the same shop. The idea of a shop stocking just unicorn merchandise and doubling as a gourmet tea room, seemed too out of this world even for me to imagine. The more I read, the more desperate I was to find out how the story ended and the quicker the pages turned. They were turning so fast at one point that it was almost as if they turned themselves. I became too emotionally involved with this book in the sense that I began interacting with it. By that I mean that I began arguing with the book and shouting random comments, whilst telling both characters to get a grip.
In short I did enjoy reading this book and I would recommend it to other readers. I will definitely be looking for Kellie’s other books. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 4* out of 5*.

The biggest disappointment for me was that from the first chapter you know exactly what is going to happen. There are no twists and turns, no surprises, it all happens exactly as you would predict after reading 10 or so pages. Not necessarily a bad thing, indeed as a holiday read there is something almost comforting in it's predictability. There are a couple of highlights but these are actually flashbacks to Ben and Poppy's past as next door neighbours rather than contemporaneous action. Unfortunately, even those are a little on the predictable side and firmly stereotype the two along, dare I say it, class lines. This may have been unintentional by the author or I may be reading far more in to it than is meant but I could not help but make the ever so British leap of the class divide between Ben and Poppy in their childhoods.
Ben has been a "good boy" and towed the family line. University followed by a high powered legal job, following daddy's footsteps. His secret though was that he wanted to open a little tea shop; serving his home baked goodies and a selection of fine teas.
Poppy is more of a free spirit. Leaving home as soon as she possibly could she set off travelling the world. Finding work here and there and living out of a rucksack she has spent ten years wandering. Her secret is that she finds it hard to trust and believes that love does not exist.
To be honest, I really enjoyed the characterisations on the page. The author treats us to narration from both Ben and Poppy, although mainly Poppy, and I did feel that you get a good insight in to what makes these two tick. They are also quite deep characters with flaws and foibles and both make fairly normal mistakes.
My problem really lies with The Little Unicorn Gift Shop of the title. Yes, I do know it is a work of fiction but Ben seems able to set up a tea shop and bake on the premises with no Health Department inspections at all. Poppy seems able to source stock with no problem (okay, in the days of the internet marginally believable) and from the get go she sells steadily and consistently turns a profit. Also, they employ the shop owner's twin grandchildren who then disappear for 90% of the book. So much so, I did wonder why they even got mentioned in the first place, they do get the odd cameo appearence but it just left me feeling like there was a whole strand to this story that got editorially binned.
I bought this as a holiday read and despite the relatively low scoring I did enjoy it; I just didn't fall in love with it. It is light and frothy and I found it easy to read in short bursts throughout the day.

Poppy and Ben grew up together living in neighbouring houses, but as school finished and University beckoned for Ben, Poppy ups and leaves the country. 12 years and a handful of emails later, Poppy is back and determined to open her own Unicorn Gift shop. Ben has spent the interim years training as a Solicitor and rising to be a partner in the firm, however he isn't happy, he wants to follow his dream and open a artisanal tea and cake shop. All the time these two best friends have been apart they have been silently yearning for each other. As they go into business together, opening a tea and unicorn gift shop, the sexual tension electrifies the air around them. However, Poppy has to overcome the difficult relationship she has with her mother before her heart can be won over by Ben.
This wonderful feel good story, explores the very difficult relationships that can occur between parent and child. Kellie Hailes doesn't sugar coat the very real emotions that Poppy has gone through, both as a child, and then as an independent adult, travelling the world to escape. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from start to finish and although this is my first Kellie Hailes book, it will definitely not be my last

This was a lovely fun and entertaining read, really enjoyed getting to know the characters. I loved the friendship that Ben and Poppy had, how it had began when they were 4 years old and that friendship continued throughout the years as they both got older, how many friends can say that, just lovely.
But when friendship possibly turns to something more, like love, things never run smoothly but then that is the path of love for you, it most definitely takes two, but it certainly was harder for Poppy given her past and her relationship with her mum, certainly wasn’t easy for her. So even though Poppy’s actions did frustrate me on a couple of times, I was very much routing for her.
So a great little story that was light and too taxing on the brain, although there was one thing that I couldn’t figure out and that is why this book forms parts of the Rabbit Leap series, it states that this is book 4, but this book isn’t even set in Rabbits Leap and there was no mention of Rabbits Leap or cameos from any of the past characters from previous books in this series. So I was a little disappointed by that.

i'm not really big on friends to lovers trope but if there's one that good and not cringy to my taste, then it would be this book. i've almost not gonna cntinue reading this one bcus i've put on hold on it for quite a long time. then when i'm away from home i bring this book and guess what, after that i was just so invested in this book. just soo good with enough amount of angst bcus both ben and poppy has been in love with each other silently and secretly since the start and they're afraid if the love word came out it would ruin their friendship and poppy esp is afraid of rejection so she's the kind of woman that doesn't believe in love and has issue with his mum. ben is sucha great and sweet hero too. There are times that i'm annoyed with poppy for being so selfish hurting ben in the process and it brings this delicious angst between their freindship. Close door romance but love the tiny love acts between them.

First book by Kellie Hailes I have read and it won't be the last. If you're looking for a light-read, some escapism, and bucket-loads of romance, this is the book for you. I do question how Poppy and Ben got so close so quickly again after over a decade apart (and apparently little contact), but I'll let that go.
Kellie writes an excellent romance - this book focuses on Poppy and Ben, with only a few other characters. I do think that perhaps more time should have been spent on Poppy's mother, given all the issues Poppy had with her. Also, Ben was perfect - are 'real' men that perfect? I think not. But the romantic in me enjoyed this book, especially the addition of unicorns and glitter, and not forgetting tea and cake. What's not to love? :-)

Currently sunning myself in the Dominican Republic and we all know nothing completes a holiday better than a genuine feel good novel. The little unicorn gift shop was this and so much more. From page one I was enthralled, rooting for Poppy and Ben hoping that the author would weave her magic to complete the story in a way that the reader supports.
It’s been a while since I’ve chosen to pick up a gentle read and I’m so pleased thiss was my choice this morning. Couldn’t put it down I read the book in less than 2 hours.
Perfect for those moments when you need affirmation of the love that’s in the world 💕

I wanted to move to Muswell Hill and live in this shop!

On par with the genre.
Stereotypical Hallmark-esque plot.
Next to no character development, and you know the ending before you ever start.
There was such little attention to the setting that it was hard to follow where the characters were at any given time.
On a good note, of the other 21 books I've read this year and the other 2 books I've attempted but failed to read this year, this is the first one that is 100% death free, and that is a positive thing.
I expect romance to all have similar plots, but if Kellie had put some dimension to the characters and paid more attention to the setting(and the title is the setting so you'd expect more setting), this could've been a 4 star.

So I picked up this little gem of a light read in one of my favourite book stores so I knew it was going to be a good un and it didn't disappoint...with unicorns and love contained in the pages I knew I was on to a winner. Its a lovely romantic page turner and I was fully engaged with the plot line and the characters, yes it was predictable in places but for once I was happy it went the way I thought it would.

Yes I'm in my 20s and still have a unicorn obsession 😂🦄 i would absolutely have a unicorn gift shop ( wish there was one ) so i had to read this book! It didn't disappoint. It's filled with sparkle ,humour, twists and a love story that was just simply meant to be from the start even if they took a while to get there!! I really love this book It's such an easy read and i really got hooked into it. I'd definitely recommend it

It was a cute romance, they both had feelings for each other but neither wanted to risk their friendship thinking the other didn't feel the same.
Both had their reasons behind their lack of confidence in taking the risk. I really connected with her, understanding why she felt the way she did about herself. When she finally took the chance and looked deep down into who she is inside deep down, she freed herself from those constraints

Poppy has been traveling the world for twelve years. She comes back to open a shop featuring unicorns and she finds out Ben is opening a shop featuring teas. They go in together and open a shop called Sparkle and Steep. Of course there is an attraction between them. However Poppy doesn't think she can love or be loved.
If you are a fan of romance than you will enjoy this book.

This was a fun, sweet read that surprised me a lot. I can't say I am the biggest Unicorn fan but I could not help but adore this story. The relationship between the main characters was engaging and felt so honest. I loved the story and the setting and am looking forward to reading more by this author.

Love the unicorn theme - love them or hate them! I think it was a quirky idea to put a cafe and unicorns together and it made me smile. The loved the vivacity of the main character and her desire to grab things and run with them, even if the rest of the world think you're barmy.
It was a lovely story and I enjoyed seeing them come together.

Warm and fluffy with depth. An enjoyable read about Ben and Poppy who set up a joint coffee shop and unicorn gift shop. Great descriptions of the shop without getting boring - could really imagine myself there.
It was interesting to read the acknowledgements and see that the author is a Kiwi and has never visited Muswell Hill... very impressive!

I loved the premise of this book, but just couldn't seem to get into it. I felt like much of the dialogue and conflict seemed forced, and a ton of time is spent on the characters questioning themselves. Anyway, it was a quick read, and I liked the cute little Sparkle & Steep shop, but glad I'm finished reading it.
