Before there was AMERICAN DIRT, there was THE UNDOCUMENTED ALIEN. Spanish language version available as EL EXTRANJERO INDOCUMENTADO. Elena Sanchez is 16 years old and her widowed mother is known around their small Mexican town as the casa chica - mistress - of Chief of Police Carlos Ramirez. Ramirez has been untouchable for so long that corruption and even murder are second-nature to him. So, when he rapes Elena he does it without any fear of consequences. Ramirez soon learns, however, that Elena is not the helpless prey he thought her to be. He realizes that she is the one person who could cost him his powerful position and even his life. In a heart-pounding chase across the Sonoran Desert, Elena draws strength from Maya spiritualism and a knowledge of the natural world and ancient ways passed down to her by her beloved Papa. In the desperate race for the border and against the clock, Elena takes on an unusual companion. Ramirez has unlimited resources, technology and henchmen on his side. Elena has one of the most powerful forces known to man ... a mother's love. But will that be enough?
B. Robert Sharry is a short story author and novelist who splits his time between Massachusetts and Mexico. When he's not catering to the demands of his fictional characters, he is most likely traveling (or at least dreaming of the next trip while eating something delicious that's bad for him).
This standalone sci fi novel features two Earth observers from an advanced alien world. When their spacecraft malfunctions, they place their bodies in cryogenic stasis and send their essences to Earth to temporarily inhabit humans while their ship repairs itself. They are separated but able to communicate telepathically. The main storyline follows CoWoP and his host, pregnant Mexican teen Elena Sanchez, who is on her way to meet a coyote to smuggle her into the U.S. Elena is being pursued, however, by a very persistent and ruthless Mexican policeman who is in league with the local cartel. CoWoP is the voice in her head, becoming her patron saint of travel. And their eventful passage through the Sonoran desert is an entertaining read.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the book or not as it had no reviews. I’m glad I took the risk and read it.
It’s the story of two aliens that have been banished to observing earth and it’s inhabitants and find that they must leave their spaceship and bodies so repairs can be made. They get separated on departure and end up in different locations inhabiting different hosts.
The rest of the story is about the ensuing adventures and the strong will to survive.
I would recommend it if you want a fun read with some sci-fi thrown with some morals as well.
I have been guilty of discriminatory beliefs towards our Latino neighbors and this story made me ashamed of myself. This is a story of hope, faith and peservence. I hope many read this and rethink their feelings towards those of another faith or country.
A good, quick read. I love how the author gave us the basics of the alien race's nature without bogging the story down, and mixing CoWoP and MiLiS's plight with that of a pregnant Mexican teen trying to escape across the border to the US while being pursued by bad guys is a truly original idea.
There were some formatting issues, and the epilogue was a bit fanciful even for such an outlandish premise, but I loved the author's portrayal of Elena. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
An interesting take on what advanced humanoid alien society could be like, combined with some Earthly drama from a Mexican teenager hoping to illegally cross the border to the USA to escape life-threatening danger and build a better life for her unborn child.
I wasn't blown away. I expected a bit more before the ending. Still I enjoyed it.
