If you read my review of issue #4, you may recall that I had quite a bit of frustrated words to say about the pacing in that issue (and the issue before it...) but that I was still very much looking forward to what might be revealed - or teased - in this issue. Well gentlefolx, I am thrilled to report I was right and the terrible crawling pace of the last two issue and the entire month's wait to arrive here at this month's issue was all WORTH IT!!!
Here in issue #5, not only did we get a good amount of revelation (which I will not spoil for you now) we also got plenty of teases for the next issue(s)! As I spent a good portion of my last review asking many rant-ish questions regarding the relationship between Cyrenic and Poppy, I will now say - none of those questions were answered at all, BUT we did see Cyrenic almost confess to have romantically-inclined feelings for Poppy. And truly and honestly, even just the hint of him hinting to her that he has the feelings for her is enough to keep me going until next month's issue. I am, of course, hoping for even more development and backstory here, but for this month - at least -I'm content, even happy. There was also so much development for our awful half-Edtlish Princess, and I must say her shining moment was all the pay-off I really needed after all the set-up and build-up of the last two issues. But fear not, there's way more than that for you in this issue!
As usual, we also got just the tiniest sprinkling of more cultural information. Just less than a smidgen of Edtlish magic and courtly customs as well as Harbenian courtly etiquette, and just a hair more of how Harbenian time magic/healing works. Also if you're like me and were really hoping for a little more insight into how the Sleepless order business works, this issue might be a tad more illuminating for you (but again I don't wanna give away anything).
And I'd be seriously remiss not to mention again how wonderful Miss Leila del Duca's art is and beautifully she renders this story for us. Points that really stuck out to me in this issue that I greatly appreciated were a) every character has different facial features and hair - like real people! and b) her absurdly intricate and beautiful backgrounds - one wall has floral wallpaper, and I hate wallpaper, but if it were designed by Leila del Duca you could paper my entire house. The way this woman draws flowers!!!! This art is really gorgeous, Everyone.
The short and sweet of it - this issue has made me fall in love all over again!
Read this if you like: graphic novels, warriors who don't need sleep, illegitimate princesses, faraway lands, beautifully patterned textiles (!), court intrigues, assassination attempts, seers
I love Poppy and Cyrenic! Their friendship and budding romance is delightful! The art work, drawing & storytelling is top notch. Don’t miss out. A Black Princess and her protector is a rare if near impossible find.
