The partner book to the Phoenix Resurrection sees the Phoenix come after this Jean Grey. Great cameos from the X-Men universe and a wonderful final page. But overall not as good as the rest of the series and the whole Phoenix saga in this book, went with a bit of a whimper. Interesting times ahead though :). 6 out of 12, Thee Star reading.

The second (and final) volume of Jean Grey's solo book gets sucked into the 'Phoenix Resurrection' event (if you can call it that) and suffers as a result. Jean ends up playing second fiddle in her own book to the original Jean and it all gets a bit messy. It does have its moments but they're not enough to elevate this volume above mediocrity, unfortunately.

I suppose with the original Jean Grey coming back, Marvel decided they didn't want to muddy the waters by having the alternate-universe-teenage Jean having her own book as well. As if Marvel's waters could even get any muddier at this point. Oh, well...

Oof. Jean ends up playing second fiddle in her own book. This whole series is supposed to be about the Phoenix coming and then most of the action occurs over in another miniseries, Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey between the last 2 issues. Honestly, just skip this series and read Phoenix Resurrection instead.

[Read as single issues]
With the Phoenix's arrival imminent and the phantom of adult Jean Grey living in teen Jean's head, it's time for desparate measures; the Psych Wars begin as Jean infiltrates the mind of the one woman who might be able to help her contain the Phoenix - Emma Frost, the White Queen!

Emma Frost is one of my favourite X-Men characters, and I am all for her showing up wherever she wants and ruling the place. When you add in some very tight Phoenix continuity (moreso than over in Phoenix: Resurrection but that's a whole other story) and the appearance of some other characters we really should see more of, this one's a winner. The final issue is especially good, as Teen Jean confronts the Phoenix head-on and basically gives it a good telling off. It's a great parallel of the final issue of Resurrection, but from a very different perspective, and the two issues together make a great coda for the series. I feel like Jean maybe had some more story in her, but I'm glad this series got to tell the stories it did before it ended.

The art's a bit more all over the place, with Victor Ibanez returning for an issue or two while Alberto Alburquerque shares the load with the other three. They're of a similar style, and both established the look of the series in the first volume so at least it's more of the same.

An excellent second volume, with an especially spectacular final issue.

This one’s a marginal improvement over volume one, but it’s clear this series only came about as an unnecessarily long prelude for the Phoenix Resurrection event, which the last issue here acting a tie-in to the event already in progress. For a series boasting such a large cast of X-women, like two Jean Greys, Hope, Emma Frost, and others, I had really expected more. Narratively, though, this is all really bare bones stuff.

This was a sad series from beginning to end. The entire vol. 1 was just a “Brave & the Bold” sort of run, with a pointless plot that lead nowhere. And finally, this second volume, which finally put Jean face to face with the Phoenix, ended up not really building the main character, but instead, breaking it apart.
Dennis Hopeless is not my favorite writer and this run didn’t prove me wrong.
Young Jean Grey started like a fresh approach on a classic character. At least that’s what I got from her appearances in other X-books. Then came this series... Hopeless turned her into an obnoxious unrelatable brat.
In the team series she had started to gain confidence, and leading X-Men Blue was doing great things for her character, and then, this series gave us an entirely different side of her. One that wasn’t appealing or interesting at all.
In the end, this series got derailed by the Phoenix Resurrection mini. It looks like this book was going nowhere and Marvel editorial just decided to put a cork in it.

The young Jean Grey doesn't seem to know what to do with its protagonist except as prequel to the Pheonix Ressurection event. Hopeless has the ghost of the older Jean and the Pheonix force usurp her from her own narrative. While Scarlet Witch's distraction is interesting, it ultimately doesn't lead to much or have any real stakes. The high point is the development between Emma Frost, the spirit of Jean Grey, and young Grey which flashes back to the plot points in the Morrison and Whedon runs of X-men successfully. However, while this is interesting, it feels like a nostalgia play. Ibañez's illustrations are cartoony and clearly influenced by manga, but pretty much fall into Marvel house style.

This volume stars off with more of Jean linking up with different people looking for help/training/insight to deal with the possible coming Phoenix. More of the same repetitiveness. The second half got a little better once the showdown between Jean and the Phoenix started. Loved the small part when Hope showed up. This overall was just an Ok series.

It’s ok. Some fun writing... but a somewhat contrived story that has editorial input all over it. This is mostly just a bridge to The Resurrection of Jean Grey. I enjoyed it... but something felt empty about it as well.

jean Grey holds a very special place in my heart, and always will. This Volume chronicles a small part of the 'original' Jean's (from now on as oJean) return, as well as sets up the future for the 'past' Jean (currently Jean, but will be known from now on as pJean).
Continuing with her journey to visit other heroes for assistance and advice against her pending battle with the Phoenix Force, pJean next encounters Scarlet Witch, who shows her how to relax and focus on yourself, but also to "own it" and know how badass you are. Hilariously, oJean maintains her presence as a ghost, but also has a plan of her own.
The Jeans' head off to find Emma Frost, which oJean possesses as soon as Emma's guard is down. oJean is searching for something in Emma's mind that can help pJean prepare for the battle. pJean is travelling through Emma's mindscape and memory, when oJean finds what she is looking for: a small fragment of the Phoenix Force hidden inside the body of Cyclops in the memory of Emma's sexual encounter where she dressed in the Dark Phoenix outfit for him and was caught by oJean (originally seen in New X-Men #138). But.... when oJean gives pJean that piece of the Phoenix Force, she becomes overwhelmed and needs help to shut down.
The team is assembled to help pJean (Ghost oJean, Emma, the 3 Stepford Cuckoos, Hope Summers, and Quentin Quire) as the Phoenix Force arrives on Earth. Using Cable's Psy-mitar, pJean is able to combat it very well until oJean comes to the realization that the Phoenix is trying to balance the 'Jean' issue by setting things up to kill pJean. She does, and we see the Jean Grey of the past (who has been around since All-New X-Men #1) erupt and disintegrate into dust.... R.I.P. pJean.

or is she?

In the final issue of the Volume and title, pJean awakens, seemingly in Hell. Magik wants to destroy her, but when pJean says that Magik is in charge of Limbo, not Hell, the scene switches. Taking her through various time periods where the Phoenix is important (Prehistoric, Days of Future Past, and the Shi'Ar Civil War, all meeting a different host of the Phoenix) pJean eventually finds herself experiencing memories in the White Hot Room. A place on a different plain of existence where the Phoenix lives, as well as pieces of all the previous hosts of the entity, pJean speaks with the Phoenix. Accepting her role in all this, pJean is able to use the Phoenix Force to reanimate her corpse and be reborn. Meeting her as she returns is the fully alive and returned oJean (see "The Resurrection of Jean Grey" storyline).

I was very happy to see that Jean got her own comic, but wish it could continue. As excited as I am to read X-Men Red to see what is going on with oJean, I also want to know what the next adventure is for pJean. Will she and the rest of the past X-Men ever get back to their time?

High recommend. Jean Grey does no wrong for me. EVER.

(7) Young Jean Grey is traveling with the ghost of her future self and it's driving her crazy. Wanda aka Scarlet Witch jumps in to help Young Jean deal with the stress of upcoming Phoenix force future. When the ghost decides to inhabit Jean and move forward with her agenda it takes her to the home of Emma Frost.

(8) Ghost Jean sends Young Jean into the mind of Emma Frost searching for a hidden puzzle piece to the Phoenix force. Inside Emma's dreamscape she is back at Xavier's school trying to fit in or fight to get to the puzzle piece hidden as a flame within Dream Scott.

(9) With the Phoenix Flame burning Jean from the inside out she is hoping to be rescued by Emma Frost, ghost Jean Grey, the 3 Cuckoos and Quentin Quite. She comes out of her psychic burning coma just in time to say "The Phoenix is Here".

(10) Jean battles for her life against the Phoenix Force. After exhausting Emma Frost, The Cuckoos and Quentin Quite - Jean goes in for her last best shot against the Phoenix Force. When she fails she fails, ghost Jean Grey tries to convince The Phoenix that young Jean isn't strong enough to survive being a host and we find out The Phoenix wants Young Jean out of the way - not to be a host. Young Jean gets burned.

(11) Jean gets burned by The Phoenix and enters it's Mindscape. Various battles from this history of The Phoenix ensure and ultimately Jean wins. The Phoenix is unable to kill her and has no choice but to send her back to the land of the living. Where she runs into another living Jean Grey. Oy Vey.

I didn't actively hate this X-men comix as I was reading it, but the art is not spectacular & the writing is fairly rote as well. Plus, the X-Men/Phoenix saga is fairly dense w/multiple time-lines & multiple editions of the same character who all have the same hair color & unless one is a thoroughly devoted X-Men acolyte which there are many of and maybe fairly so, unless you are that it's all a bit thick and muddled up, story-wise, and although it isn't a trial reading it when I was done I was, WTF? I guess this was a fairly decent set-up for the next edition in the Jean Grey/Phoenix/X-Men ongoing series but who can really tell for sure. Not me. Thank you.

This series was fantastic. Sure, Hopeless was setting up for Phoenix Resurrection, but while doing so we got an important and meaningful journey for Young Jean as she finally came face-to-face with her greatest fear - her inevitable, multiple, painful deaths and resurrections caused by her relationship to the Phoenix Force.

It's so well done, and so fun to read... and makes me even more heartbroken by the end of X-Men Blue, Vol. 3: Cross Time Capers with what they've resolved to do.

Continuing the great x-read of 2017/18...

Much better than the first volume but as soon as it seems to really be building a head of steam behind it, the story moves over to a different book and this one quietly ends.

Young Jean was the most fascinating of the time-displaced X-Men. She was growing into a very different character, a much stronger young woman... But the writers kind of drug her kicking and screaming back to the status quo and that is disappointing to me.

And then another x-book ends not with a bang but with a whimper.

A nice way to conclude this young Jean Grey's journey. I've really enjoyed her interactions with her new mentors and with the former Phoenix hosts. I like the way she's strong, the naive way she fights and all the differences between her and the previous versions of the character we know. I've ultimately enjoyed this series and I think it's going to mark my return to mutant comics for a while. I missed Jean Grey. Let's hope she keeps getting interesting stories in the future

This ended with a bit of a whimper. We get the big fight between baby Jean and the Phoenix, but it’s a bit of a letdown. Yes, the first part of the fight has Emma, the Cuckoos, Quentin Quire, and Hope, and yes, the second part has various other Phoenix hosts in the White Hot Room (like Illyana, Rachel, and Rook’shir; you guys remember him?), but baby Jean’s victory seems unearned and more than a little rushed. Oh well.

Fun

So many twists in the story lines.
I love a good story.
I was here for the first xmen books.
Got very sick and stopped reading comic books.
I do miss them.
Not happy re price of comic books today.
As a child , if not for coverless comics and some relatives generosity I would have missed the beginnings.
Looking forward to her new movie.
God only knows whom they will kill off in this movie.
Teaser of new mutants, extremely disappointing.

Young Jean's quest to be prepared when the Phoenix comes for her continues and its still somewhat repetitive. I loved the idea of "old" Jean haunting her younger counterpart but its execution seemed haphazard. I enjoyed Emma's role in this and the last issue and what it sets up. The art was very good but I thought coloring was off at times. Overall, a decent story but this entire series is just a set up of what's next and for that Jean gets shortchanged.

Solid story and good lead in to Phoenix Resurrection

I liked this story but mostly for the way it lead into the Phoenix resurrection which is a new beginning for the original Jean Grey. It will be good to have her back.

Solid story arc, entertaining and well developed. The payoff is huge.

85/100.
