So if you are at all interested in Kabuki but don't know much about it, I think this book is a great starting point. It discusses the ten plays in chronological order, and relates them to the contemporary events that influenced the stories themselves and how they were staged. I found the biographical information about the playwrights and actors interesting, along with the historical context of current events, government censorship, and popular fads that affected the plays. The notes were a useful addition that expanded on the text without bogging down the main work.
An excellent introduction into kabuki. The use of ten different plays as vehicles with which to track the development of kabuki effectively places the art form within cultural, political, and historical contexts.
