This book surprised me. It addressed teenage worries and included various animal welfare topics, including raising chickens, horse care, battery hen welfare, and the Hendra virus.
Three friends at boarding school are enrolled in the vet cadet program and are challenged by their teachers to be strong, independent young women who challenge misconceptions. They are given chicks to raise to demonstrate how intelligent chickens are. While out horse riding, they may have accidentally been exposed to the Hendra virus found on the property next door. Did their horses catch this deadly virus? Are chickens smart?
I enjoyed the animal focus of the story.
Recommended for readers ten years and older.
