Rachel Tremblay is a Canadian artist, musician and writer. Working on poetry, songs and hip-hop lyrics in her young adult life, she also spent a lot of time drawing. This led her to study fine arts in Matane, Quebec and then Kelowna, British Columbia. Without abandoning her other artistic endeavors, she wrote her first music album, under the band name August Elliot, upon returning to Quebec. During this time she married and had her first child. She spent a good part of the next decade honing her craft as a contemporary realist painter under the wing of an argentinian mentor, all while writing music for her second album, gigging, working as a graphic designer, and giving life to a second child. Painting, music and poetry led her to finally write the novels she'd always dreamed of. Mother to two grown children whom she homeschooled, you can find her in her native Montreal or in the Laurentian woods making art in some form or other.

Rachel has self-published four books and her fifth, Lavender Spike, is scheduled for released with ECW Press fall 2025.

I have read Topaz by Tremblay and I honestly can say I am enthralled by her writing and creativity. I'm always excited when she is talking about a new project because I know it's going to be magical. And once again, I ate up this book and felt completely connected to the story and it's wildly fun, yet completely tragic if you could imagine such a combination. But something about this book spoke deeply to me at the time of first reading The Nirvana Threads; I'm not sure if it was the connection I felt to the themes of love, loss, and tragedy, or if I resonated deeply with our protagonist Carlie, who was a beautifully and well fleshed out character. Ultimately, I think it was a combination of the raw and gritty truth of trauma, as someone who has had her fair share of trauma it is always fascinating to plop into someone else's mind and learn how they cope with their personal battle. Also, my love for everything 90's and nostalgic. If you get nothing else from this book, which I highly, highly doubt, let it be basking in the glorious and vivid nostalgia of it all. Because if there is one thing I love, it's nostalgia, which always feels like a homecoming! While a quick read, it packs a punch and I absolutely recommend to my magical realism lovers.

I don’t read as many indie author books as I should be reading but I finally dove into The Nirvana Threads. This is a book about loss, resilience, and inner strength.

The writing is great! Tremblay I hope you’ve got more ideas under your sleeve. Your scene transitions are also well done, I was moving with the character through the story fludily.

Overall I did enjoy it but I was expecting this to be more of a science fiction read from the cover and the synopsis. I really was waiting for some alien explanation. Still unsure of what genre to group this under so I shall put it under magical realism.

My favourite part were the flashbacks they really helped explain PTSD which was handled very well in this book!

The Nirvana Threads, Rachel Tremblay’s latest book, is a modern day interpretation of 90s magical punk and spiritual romance, a combination which I have never come across before. Sometime back, I reviewed the first chapter of the book, and I remember being very pleased and eager to read more. And so, when this book was released on the 1st of June, the author was kind enough to send me one too! Another disclaimer: although I was given this book by the author, my thoughts are entirely from a personal viewpoint and have in no way, been influenced.

One thing I would like to point out is that there is a lot of parallelism between the stream of consciousness method applied by Virginia Woolf and the similarities in our protagonist Carlie’s journey. Having said that, I propound that there has been no plagiarizing, if you’re thinking in that line; I had meant the method itself.

We have our young protagonist, Carlie, a young woman living in the 90s, whose life changes after a life-altering accident. In the review I wrote for the first chapter, I was very much impressed with the way the author has beautifully portrayed the hollowness in the independence that people strive for. Carlie is a person facing a harsh reality- she does not really have any friends, and her parents are just people who gave her birth. They are just ‘family’ without the emotional connotations that otherwise come to mind when one talks of their families. It’s her husband who is her only ‘home’ in the world; someone others have not approved of, but in her defence- “She loved the fiery spark in his eyes, his sense of humour, and their common love for music. And his smile. His smile that showed his good heart. That was reason enough for her.”

The accident in itself is a great loss for her and almost a foreshadowing of the great change that is to come, as we see in the blurb! There is mention of a brother who lifts up her gloomy mood while she is recuperating in the hospital and I cannot help but be eager to know more.

It is June 1994, when “she climbed aboard the spaceship, as she kept calling it, and flew high above and away from Johnny’s game-board piece, wondering if his warm soul was enjoying a similar view.” Yes, that’s how the author had ended the first chapter and it had left me restless.

The journey in one sense, is a journey of growth for Carlie- she’s broken and she heals with the help of her “Nirvana Threads” like she fondly calls them. She learns about acceptance, and the meaning of selflessness and love, and it was a spiritual journey for me too. The book in its essence is a spiritual journey of a young woman, as she fights after a heart-wrenching loss and her subsequent healing. I myself was very moved with the story and I think that most will be too. I am a spiritual person as well, and that’s why I suppose I could connect with it the way I did. Having said that, I also feel that this book is a miss-or-hit, because I feel that while many will love this, there will be a select few who won’t, and that would just mean that some people won’t be able to connect with it.

The plot was very well woven- I specially loved the intense episodes Carlie had- the author has described them beautifully and I was almost in tears during them. The characters were well planned out- I loved Damien! Leo, Hazel, Lucas were also very well planned out. I think that the author has done a great job in exploring the different facets of human life and jotting them down so well on paper. I personally would have loved a sequel to this- I would love to know more about Carlie’s story. The characters were magnificent and tangible and real for me, even though I truly felt that it was more of a plot-driven story.

I rate this a 5/5 stars and wish the author a heart congratulations for this amazing, touching and beautiful book!

"The nirvana threads had become a guide, a thrill, something to look forward to, a testament to her passion."
·
Carlie has lived her life enamoured with life; she makes decisions in the heat of the moment and enjoys and appreciates her surroundings that much more for it. But after surviving a catastrophic accident that left her life in shatters, she moves back home to heal the wounds of her past.
When a certain kind of magic starts manifesting around her in the form of luminous threads and the danger of death looms near, Carlie will have to find and understand the deeper meaning that will grant her the opportunity to live life to the fullest, filled with an undying love.

I will forever be eternally grateful to have won this beautiful, heart-wrenching, profound book in a giveaway. The Nirvana Threads is honestly just what I needed! The setting is absolutely wonderful and realistic and although the story is only one hundred forty-five pages long, it is extremely fulfilling and thought provoking.
We follow the main character, Carlie, after a serious car accident shattered her world and left chaos in its wake; the narrative is highly heartbreaking and truly put into perspective how fragile humans are as well as the fact that we need to live in the moment, love fiercely, and take all the steps needed to overcome tragic changes.
I love that the twenty-five year old protagonist did everything in her power to understand life and the path she was on, while letting herself grieve and making it clear that moving on is, oftentimes, the only option.
If you know me, you know that I'm emotional more often than not, but The Nirvana Threads did something to me that I can't entirely put into words; I should probably try to explain this by saying that this book gave me exactly what I needed and that was the ability to understand change is imminent. It broke my heart and put it back together and I may or may not have cried a couple of times.
Not only does this story deal with grief and change at its core, but it is beautifully spiritual in a light-hearted, non-commital sort of way. Some of the descriptions left me breathless and I had to re-read some paragraphs to fully embrace the beauty of the author's words.
There's absolutely nothing I didn't love about this book! The writing is modern and poetic, the characters are realistic in their flawed yet lovely personalities, and the ending had me wanting more. This beautiful narrative and its short graphic novel deserve all the stars and love in the world!

“She wanted to be loved again, to hold that healing, nourishing light close to her heart. Though this wasn’t love. This was icing on a cake she didn’t know the flavor of yet.”

“The Nirvana Threads” by Rachel Tremblay is unlike anything else I’ve read in the urban fantasy genre. The book straddles the line between fantasy and contemporary as the protagonist, Carlie, finds that the donor heart that saved her life is both a gift and a curse.

Left with survivors guilt and the grief of losing her husband after an automobile accident, Carlie moves home and discovers what she refers to as the Nirvana Threads; glowing lines that spread from her heart to those around her when she feels complete bliss. The threads are addictive and as she begins to chase the high that they bring she realizes they’re also wearing her down and taking a toll on the heart that saved her life.

Carli must figure out how to balance her grief and her joy, and come to terms with a life that is full of ups and downs while accepting the help and love of those she still has around her.

“She drank it as a means to an end, and as something to do while her heart fell apart, figuratively and literally.”

Tremblay’s writing is poetic and full of depth, she sets a scene masterfully- I felt like I had walked the streets in Carlie’s hometown. The only drawback for me was that among these masterful settings some of the character’s dialog felt a bit weak in comparison. I would have liked to have seen more of some of the characters including Leo, and Damien but I loved the flashbacks with Carlie’s husband because they really showed her character growth.

While the plot had fantasy elements it wasn’t hard to follow and I was able to suspend my disbelief without feeling the need to over analyze the origins of the nirvana threads. It was a fun sweet story of falling in love after major loss and I’ll definitely be looking to read more of Tremblay’s works.

Thank you so much Rachel for giving me a copy of your book! I loved those passages where I could see bits and pieces of your personality peak through 😁

I'm honestly not a person who enjoys romance novels, but I found The Nirvana Threads quite enjoyable! I really appreciated the magical realism mixed into this book (you all know how much I love my fantasy 😍 ehehe). I do wish some aspects of this book would've been developed more (like the magical aspects and the characters, individually) and it felt a bit too insta-love for me, but the book is so short that I feel like these two things were probably necessary.

I could also relate to so many things the main character was going through, and I love the deepest moral of this story : enjoy your life on a day-to-day basis. Your life is not in the past or in the future. Your real life is happening right now, and you never know when it'll be taken from you. So you sure as hell better live in the now ✌️

P. S. As a registered nurse, I really appreciate how much effort the author put in researching and writing the medical aspects of this book!

This was a truly surprising read. Rachel's writing is enchanting, it spins its own vibrant threads around you. Carlie is a delight, a fire-cracker learning that there are other ways to burn. This book is a love story, but not (only) in the ways you expect. It's a love letter to life and art, to growth and healing, and to the world in all of its complicated, colorful glory. I do wish that there had been more time to spend in the story, it passed by so quickly (I read almost all of it in one sitting). The spiritual elements were beautiful and spoke to me, but did reawaken a lot of thoughts and questions for me that are challenging - this story won't let me go for quite a long while. and that's the mark of a great book - it doesn't stop working inside you even when the covers have been shut.

I could not put this one down. I read it in one sitting, I think in the span of 1 to 2 hours. Carlie is in an accident, and she gets a second chance at life. She heads back to her hometown, but that is where she starts seeing things around her. There are these spiritual threads of light coming from herself and other people, and she is determined to learn what they are from.
I loved loved loved this book. I loved the writing style, I loved the characters, I loved the story. The Nirvana Threads is one that really spoke to me. I just fell in love with it. I highly, highly recommend reading this one.

Nirvana Threads is an intense and magical story about love and loss and lust and worries. Heart transplant too. The motif of this story I would say is life. Live life to the fullest and try to be happy. Life throws some obstacles your way okay but you can and you will get through them. This story was such a heart-wrenching piece. I loved the story. How you just get pieces here and there and by the end the puzzle is complete. Full circle. Amazing.

Oh.my.god, this was ridiculous. We follow Carlie who has recently had a heart transplant after being in a car accident that killed her husband and almost killed her. She moves back to her hometown (Moot point....yeah) and starts seeing these lights (fondly named the Nirvana Threads) coming out of her chest and other people's chests. Okay okay, kind of cool...but....then she falls in "love" with this guy's she meets on a park bench....like what? Two months after her husband is killed? They date for what seems like 2 weeks and then are over because he is an ass and seems kind of psycho. Meanwhile her brothers best friend is in love with her and has been pining after her for the whole story and not soon after leaving this psycho dude she is now with him! Cut to like two pages later, what is it another 2 weeks and they are ENGAGED! The story really lost me then, I didn't think it could get worse....and then it was like "challenge accepted, watch me!" In the most cliche romance move ever, her love with Damien starts killing her....yup, the threads of light actually start killing her heart and they are too active with Damien so they have to part. More stuff happens and they end up together...but ugh. This just wasn't for me.

I will say though, I have realized that I do not like magical realism which this book definitely has so if you like that type of thing I would say to go ahead and give this a try.

"The Nirvana Threads" is a book that's impossible to put down. I devoured it in a single sitting, which took about one to two hours. The story follows Carlie, who survives an accident and is given a second chance at life. As she returns to her hometown, she begins to perceive mysterious spiritual threads of light emanating from herself and others, sparking a quest to uncover their origin.
This book captivated me completely. The narrative style, the depth of the characters, and the compelling storyline all resonated with me deeply. "The Nirvana Threads" is a novel that touched my soul, and I wholeheartedly endorse it as a must-read.

This book was touching while still having that bit of weirdness that I love. It’s a little romance, heartbreak, and magical fiction all rolled into one. It was a super easy and fast read and it only took me four days because I didn’t read for most of the third day! I was super happy with the ending even though it wasn’t what I expected. It was such a sweet end. I can imagine Carlie’s life past the book ending....
Octob*tch cracked me up! It’s a funny/sadistic comic at the end of the book and I’m so glad it was included!!

The Nirvana Threads, By Rachel Tremblay was such a fun book!

I would start by telling any potential readers a little bit about the story, but honestly I enjoyed going into it not knowing what to expect, and I think you will too.

Did it go where I thought it would? Absolutely not! Which made it all the more enjoyable to read!

I love a storyline that just keeps you guessing, and the plot in this one is well written, carefully considered, and totally enthralling!

I can’t wait to try another of Rachel’s books

I loved this book. Rachel Tremblay has a unique voice. Her writing is like her main character Carlie who is creative, laid back and effortlessly cool. She weaves magic through the tender love story in a way which is so believable I found myself squinting in search of Nirvana threads in real life. Carlie's graphic novel at the end of the book is a lovely bonus. I can't wait to read more of Rachel's books.

I couldn't put this book down. I know this is a romance, but what spoke to me most was the underlying themes of grief and personal growth through connection with self, others, and something greater. Rachel Tremblay's writing captures so beautifully and bang-on grief and the various ways we learn to live with it.

A short but beautiful story about Carlie's journey of having a heart transplant which saved her from the brink of death.

I loved how the magical realism was inserted and also became curious about the concept of the nirvana threads. Another thing that I liked was the graphic story that was inserted towards the end of the story. This was a unique, heartwarming and enjoyable read.

Thanks to the author for providing me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

"This heart that was not hers, how coupd it already be broken? How could it understand the burning grief that grew inside it? What did this heart know of love?"

Leo scowled at her. "Carlie, that's not how love works."
"What do you know?"
"I know that you are way too special, too precious, to waste your time waiting to care about someone who obviously doesn't care enough about you."

"The nirvana threads had become a guide, a thrill, something to look forward to, a testament to her passion."

Okay, I LOVE the concept of this book. It’s magical and weird and different. But, ah, so short! I felt rushed when it came to the relationships and plot. I longed for more build-up. More tension.

Rachel’s writing is so nostalgic of my 20’s and my concert promoting life, so I connected with the feel of her writing and her MC...minus the heart transplant and seeing emotion lights. 🌚

Overall, this was a fun story and I can easily see it being expanded into a full novel.

I devoured this book in one road trip. It was the most wonderful and lovely travel companion. Beautifully written, relatable and captivating. You grow marvelously attached to the characters; The details such as the graphic novel included at the end make it an all around gem.
The story is one Rock&Roll adventure into the magically mystical.
