My boss wants to put a ring on my finger. When my house burns down, my insurance company thinks it's my fault. In a single night I lose everything. My life is ruined. The next morning I stumble into work, wondering if people will notice I slept in my car, and in my daze I walk right into the guy who owns the whole company. Marcus Steere, billionaire extraordinaire. He dresses to kill, and his blue eyes lock me on the spot. I'm so overwhelmed that I let it slip out how I'm about to end up on the street. I need someone to blame. Doesn't he cut the checks? Good. It's semi his fault I'm so broke. Marcus is stunned by my blunt honesty. And then he makes me an offer too good to refuse. I just have to do one thing... Pretend to be his wife.
This naughty novella is a complete standalone full of all the good and dirty things Penny Wylder writes best! It also includes one of her bestselling boss romance stories as an extra at the back!
I really liked this one. I was so connected to the characters. I liked the h and I so loved the H! The only thing missing is the epilogue and I need it so badly. If there's only an epilogue, this one would be more than a 5-star read for me.
The story is about Marcus and Ruby.
Her house burnt down. She has nowhere to go and not enough money to rent a motel so she slept in her car.
She's a clerk in a high-end clothing store and she's late for work the next day and was on a hurry when she suddenly bumped into someone, the owner of the company she works for, Marcus. She said some things that could get her fired, instead she got promoted and will pretend to be his wife.
I really loved Marcus. He's a wealthy man but he's not like those hard and cold wealthy heroes I used to read. Don't get me wrong, I love hard and cold heroes who only get soft and sweet to their heroines but Marcus is the type of hero I'd love to read over and over again. He's caring, sweet and lovable. He's close to perfect!
Ruby has just lost her home due to a fire. Now homeless and with almost no money, she’s stuck sleeping in her car before work the next morning. When she arrives, she’s late and panicking, and in the process runs into the store’s owner, Marcus Steere. Marcus seems to feel bad for her situation and offers her a deal: she can become his new personal assistant, which includes a significant pay raise and a bonus of a new house if she agrees to play his wife at an upcoming fashion show where his ex-wife will be and hopefully they’ll convince the ex that he’s never getting back with her.
The story was too short for the plot, and because of that, there was mostly telling and little showing. It’s told from Ruby’s POV only, so I never connected with Marcus’s feelings for her. There are enough scenes between the two of them, but they mostly consist of Ruby’s inner-monologue about her endless insecurities. And her insecurities are justified, because this poor girl just experiences one embarrassing situation on top of another. She loses her house in a fire she caused by leaving a toaster oven plugged in, and she doesn’t even get the insurance payout; she oversleeps in her car, is late for work and consequently runs into the “perfect” Marcus and literally falls on her butt; she gets her car towed and has to call Marcus to come save her; she gets caught by Marcus masturbating in his bathtub; she shows up in his room buck-naked while looking for a towel while he’s there, and more. That’s all in the first 24 hours.
Which brings me to my next problem; the story spans all of 72 hours, which includes their first meeting, first sex, an awkward encounter with the ex, declarations of love, and I like insta-love (usually… sometimes), but it didn’t fit with this story, probably because there’s just so little evidence as to why the MCs love each other. There are no significant conversations or moments between them where they learn much about each other on page. They’re all simply referenced like “we talked about this, then that, all through the night and it was magical”.
Yeah, I wasn’t convinced.

ARC received by author in exchange for an honest review!
I enjoyed this one, but I also felt sorry for Ruby. She had so much bad luck, I'm not telling it all but it just went from one big thing to a few little ones.
Than on the horse comes Marcus -Okay Okay Okay he didn't come on a horse... But it felt that way- He is kind of her saving hero..
I even had moments that I needed to look away and then after a few moment read it back because it was just so funny that I wasn't sure it really happened! I felt so much for Ruby in those moments!
We all know Penny Wylder is known for the Steamy-Shortie-Little drama. This had it all!
Picked this for a quick, sexy read. Just, meh....in my opinion. Storyline was totally unrealistic, not usually a dealbreaker for me with these short, sexy, smutty novellas as I consider them to be mostly fantasies anyway.....but I found it to be a little irritating with this one: e.g. my understanding is that homeowners insurance covers accidental fires as standard??Heroines house is burnt down at the beginning of this story by a toaster fire and she is told that it is not covered by her policy.... And if I really want to be nit picky, it had too many grammatical errors (also irritating).......

Ruby hates her job, especially her smarmy boss but she needs the money and after her house burns down she finds herself homeless as well. Literally bumping into the Marcus Steere, she has no idea he is the big boss or a billionaire but he finds himself smitten and offers Ruby a solution. Pretend marriage and a job working with him. Ruby agrees but never thought she would find herself falling for her boss.
I liked this, I was looking for a fun quick read and this fit the bill. Enjoyed the characters and thought the chemistry was perfect.
My quarterly dip into FM romance. Last one I read was basically office sexual harassment so let’s see if anything’s changed..... oh, right, that’ll be a big fat no then.
In a #metoo and #mendobetter world we still have female authors churning out borderline sexual assault storylines and calling them romance. Let’s review.
MC works in retail, she’s underpaid. She finds herself in a desperate situation. Our “hero” (sarcastic quotes) takes advantage of her desperate situation to propose an unorthodox job. He hires her as his PA (without knowing if she has any skills to be able to do that job) and masquerade as his wife. Now a real hero would give her paid time off. May offer his legal department’s assistance fighting the insurance company (as Penny Wylder doesn’t seem to understand the difference between arson and accidents (the latter being the whole reason insurance exists) I imagine it’d be a quick matter to resolve). Maybe agree to look into the pitiful wages his company pays. But in romance world this one percenter sex pest is the hero.
Over in the real world Ruby, ten years later, would be tearfully recounting these events to Vogue as she whispers “you have to understand, he’s a powerful man and he used that power to take advantage of my naïveté and desperate situation.”

What a delicious romance. When the damsel in distress is a hard-working woman down on her luck to a miserable state and the knight in shining armor is a fashion mogul who's sweet and handsome, the fairy tale just gets juicy ;-)
Marcus and Ruby meet accidentally, a fake proposal binds them into a whirlwind romance, and the happy ending is seeped in luxury, tender looks and deliciously sensual passion. In the always great style of this author, Ruby's tragedy becomes wry comedy that blooms into rugs-to-princess story that wraps up with love, Paris and a little commotion before true happiness. Really, really lovely.
This was just so-so for me. The whole thing was just rushed and very far fetched, but if you can get beyond that...
Ruby lost her house and all her belongings in a fire. Of course the insurance company won't pay out since she left a toaster over plugged in, so she has no where to go and no money until the next pay day. Without another option she sleeps in her crappy car in the parking lot at her workplace. Waking up late she rushes into work to clock in before her boss has a fit, and slams right into the super hot owner of the company. Thank god he takes pity on her and offers her a better job after she insults his company and his employees. And a bonus (new house) if she agrees to act like his wife, and be swept off to Paris for a work conference. Hey! Sign her up, she's all in!
3.5 Stars This book was a pretty decent read. Ruby was a good heroine. She was independent and feisty but was down in the dumps after her house burned down. I wanted to get to know more about the hero Marcus, without his POV I felt like I knew next to nothing about him. Overall this was a quick and sexy with a sweet ending. I voluntarily read an arc copy for my honest review!
Great book love the story of Marcus and Ruby. They have great Chemistry It was truly a love story. It was supposed to be fake but he fell in love with her
Ruby has just lost her home due to a fire. Now she is homeless and has practically no money to live on, so she has to stay in her car until payday. Which means sleeping in her car- this makes her late for work the next day. When she arrives, she’s late and panicking, and she ends up running into the store’s owner Marcus Steere. Marcus comes up with a solution to Ruby’s situation- one she cant resist. What this story sets up is a damsel in distress and the knight in shining armor –or the modern day retelling of the story. I did like this story but I felt so bad for Ruby for her luck was just so bad. Marcus is a sweetheart and these two together have fantastic chemistry. I do feel like the story was rushed along and some of the story was too short for the plot otherwise I loved Ruby and Marcus were just perfect, would have liked more of the plot/story.
My Rating: 4.4 stars ***** “I received an advanced copy of this book from the author at no cost to me."
Very well written story with great storyline and plot. I liked the characters and how they developed. They are well described. The chemistry is instant and also the attraction. Would have loved this story to be longer because it has the potential for it. It is very passionate. The mix of ex-wife, passion, drama, lust, love, humour and emotions all over makes it an amazing read. Ruby has a lot of bad luck thrown at her but luckily she has a hot boss that wants to make an agreement with her. But of course this turns out to be more than just that. I would have liked an epilogue to sum up what happens next. Really amazing and enjoyable read.
Another quick sexy read by Penny that I absolutely loved. Ruby lost it all when her house catches fire and her work life sucks until she talks to the boss Marcus Steere. When Marcus comes up with a solution she can’t resist. They have instant connection and I loved every minute of their story. It was sweet, sexy and enjoyable read which I always expect from an of Penny’s books. Everyone will fall for Marcus for sure. Another 5 Star read that everyone must read.
I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
If you like short, sweet and hot novella then this is one to read.
Ruby is a down on her luck shop assistant, just when she thought her life could not get any worse she loses her house in a fire. Having no choice but to sleep in her car and manages to oversleep, rushing to get to work she literally slams in to Marcus. Who turns out to be her hero.
You can’t help but love Ruby, and the chemistry between her and Marcus is off the charts hot. Brilliant quick read that has it all from steamy scenes to s malicious ex wife.
This story made me tingle in places that only my gynecologist has seen (reference from the story) A relatively quick read that was fairytale like in that when a young women's house burns down she runs into her prince (literally) who also happens to be her boss. There is even an evil witch aka ex-wife. Well written storyline and well developed characters. Three cheers! (Note: I was provided an Advanced Review Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
If Ruby didn’t have bad luck, she would have no luck at all! Down on her luck, Ruby is running late for a job she hates, as she is trying to get clocked in, she runs into the one man that she ever expected to run into. Marcus takes one look at Ruby and an idea forms. She is everything he needs to pull off a plan and if everything goes right, he will have Ruby right where he wants her!
I good quick and steamy read. Enjoyed the story itself and the characters. It was fast but sweet and too the point. Felt the connection between the two. Good book with a nice ending. Would have loved an epilogue!
Corny, fun, sweet and unrealistic but I really enjoyed it. Office to ace us one of my favourite reads so I knew I’d enjoy this but, I didn’t blow me away. I think this your perfect beach read, where you want to chill and not have to pay massive attention to the story in case you miss something.
After Ruby’s house burns down, she is left with some groceries in her car, the clothes in her back and a jacket her mum left her after she died. Facing work after sleeping in her car, has her literally running into her boss, we’ll get bosses boss, the Marcus Steere, owner of the high end clothing store she works in. But with her mind in a frazzled state she blurts everything to Marcus, instead of getting tired she gets a job… his personal assistant and wife.
Marcus needs the shares his ex wife holds in his company, and the only way to get them back is to appear moved on. Enter Ruby, she’ll be his pretend wife for the business trip and will come out the other side with a new house and a great payday. They didn’t expect their own sparks to fly. No longer a business deal, Ruby and Marcus fall quickly for each other leaving more questions… can they survive when Ruby doesn’t fit into his world, but Marcus doesn’t want yo let her go. Even the evil ex wife has a go, I’ve heard of instalove but this is whole new world.
