I have read this book off and on for about a year. As I’ve stated in previous reviews, I don’t read much erotica, but when I do it has to be weird.
This is a science fiction themed collection of erotica. A few of the stories are surprisingly clever and original. Some of the ideas would make great plot devices in science fiction novels. We have aliens, we have technology, and we have subterfuge. Unexpected things take place between these pages and between the sheets.
Subjectively, this is two stars for me—I get bored with erotica. But objectively this is three or four stars for the widely diverse themes and concepts. If anything, this is amusing and original.
When I picked up this book, I don't know quite what I was expecting. Maybe a few love stories, with some descriptive sex scenes. Maybe a little bit of emotion. Probably a lot of very weird plots, settings and characters. And that's what I got. Except also not. There was such a range of different stories, some which I loved, and some which I didn't so much. But that's the beauty of a short story collection. There's always something to love.
The sheer amount of situations, tropes and characters that Wohl created is astounding. I am beyond impressed. Some of the stories were very short, with very little character development or storyline, These stories were just erotica. Well written erotica, but pure erotica none-the-less. The characters and situations were inspired and interesting, but I found myself wanting there to be more. There was definitely space for the worlds and characters to be developed, and I would have loved to have seen that. The only exception to this was Abducted, which I felt was a pretty perfect short-short story all on its own (although, yes, is pure erotica).
Some of the stories were more developed and I think these worked really well. I especially liked A Part of Nature, and ABO story. The suggestion that there could be a happily ever after was sweet, and I could have read a whole novel about the two protagonists. The longer stories definitely had more story to them, which I liked, although they weren't always as interesting in terms of concept or character as the shorter stories.
This is a great selection of stories, well written and inventive. I enjoyed it very much. I just think it would have benefitted from being 5 or 6 short stories, fleshed out (pun intended) a little bit more.
I was provided with a complimentary digital copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Readers who are looking for a quick fix of humor, sci fi, and smut will likely enjoy the variety to be found here. Each short vignette is a completely separate, self-contained story with a basic premise and two (usually male) protagonists who eventually get off together. The scenes range from funny and romantic to thought-provoking and even creepy. There were several that I found quite clever, with unexpected twists and delightful reveals.
For my taste, though, the book is too much like a snack bar, presenting sketches of scenes and punchlines with little to no build-up or background. I found it hard to sympathize with the characters, who often were given little more than a name and a species to identify them by. I personally prefer longer, more in-depth plots that I can sink my teeth into, with three-dimensional, well-developed characters. I also think that all of the fan fiction I've read has jaded me a bit, so I perhaps wasn't as shocked/titillated by the tentacles, Omegaverse, or robot!sex as a member of the general public might be.
But if you're looking for easily consumed homoerotic fiction that's off the beaten path and that may just make your eyes bug out a bit or put a smirk on your face and a tingle in your belly, this will definitely deliver.
Content warning: A couple of the stories contain dub-con verging into non-con, although there is nothing violent.
I have been thirsting for some good mm sci-fi and each and every one of these little snippets managed to both deliver, satisfy, and leave me hungry for more. I got this off KU on a whim, and immediately purchased the book halfway through, it's THAT good. If these stories were individual, full length novels I would buy the whole set. I can't pick a favorite, there's a little something of everything for everyone! One story made my jaw drop, my eyes widen in shock, and my heart tried to beat out of my chest, I thought I knew what was coming, but I was wrong. Another had me cooing in delight at how sweet it was, and quite a few had me sweating like a sinner in church, lol. I want to read everything this author has. EVERYTHING.
It's a sci-fi Decameron of a sort - a collection of witty M/M vignettes. Some of them are creepy, some are touching and a bit sad, and some are simply entertaining and filled with easy banter. But all of them are utterly NSFW :) It’s as if Clifford D. Simak’s short stories had lots and lots of sex in them. With each story, I thought it was the best in the anthology - and then I read the next and had the same feeling. In other words - highly recommended if you like to explore the mating rituals of humans (and some other species).
*WARNING* contains explicit m/m sexual content These stories were okay if you want (for the most part) mind numbing m/m intercourse. I understand these are super short, but they still need who? What? When? Where? Why? or at least a couple of them to make a semi complete stories. Most of these stories were, basically, "hi! Your cute, bend over." I need more that that to enjoy reading even the super shorts.
Was it really as simple as that? Could you just fellate a god?
A collection of sometimes silly, sometimes dark, always weird short stories. Pretty much just scifi flavoured erotica of the m/m variety. Several were just kind of standard; others were really creative. I especially liked "Pronounced Devotion", "Noticed You Were Out" and "Oh, Earthman!".
Just a sci-fi smutty sandwich with a side of homosexuality. I have no idea what I just read. These stories are so fucked up. If you have a twisted sense of humor and enjoy living on the raunchier side of weird...
