Hollywood celebrity, Rian Johns has a habit of leaving a mess behind him. Flamboyant, cocky, and intent on having a good time, after being caught by both the police and the media with his pants quite literally down, his studio sends him to cool off and sober up. He shouldn't be able to get in any trouble on the Oregon Coast.
After the death of his son's mother, Mason Andrews came home to Cliffport to raise him. Owner of a small bar and grill, Mason has spent his time focused on his son and his business. Twelve years later, as he prepares for Jake to leave for college, the very last thing Mason Andrews needs or wants is any kind of trouble.
People driven stories. Slightly broken boys. Safe space MM Romance fiction. After getting a degree in languages, travelling the world, raising a family, and working as a business journalist, she went back to school and studied English Literature and Media Studies.
In 2018, she published her first novel Jesse’s Smile with Small Black Cat Media. Since then, she’s continued to write contemporary gay (MM) romance and her academic research in fan studies and the queerification of popular fiction characters by fans.
Angelique is owned by three cats, three adult children, two temperamental computers, and a very patient boyfriend (not a partridge in a pear tree). She’s also pierced, painted, pansexual, and proud AF. When she’s not writing (or swearing at her computer) she likes cold champagne, hot coffee, neat whiskey, loud Springsteen, and the Winchester brothers kicking butt.
So after I finished Jesse's Smile (which was a 5++ star read for me), I've been bingeing on this author's work the last couple of days. I love her characters and this one was no different. Mason and Rian are funny with their banter and interactions. They are a hot couple together for sure. I did start to get annoyed with them when neither would communicate how they were feeling. But there were times when I could just feel the love, pain and sadness between them.
I agree with other reviewers that the ending was a little abrupt. I hope the author will consider some followup stories with them. I want to see them living and loving life together.
3.5 stars!! I usually love this author’s books. This one was just ok. I loved the premise and liked the MCs (for the most part) and really thought the secondary characters added to the story nicely. The one thing that lost a star for me was the ending. It was a bit lackluster. I needed more. It JUST ended. This book definitely needs an epilogue. Other than that I enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this story. It actually would have rounded down if I hadn't enjoyed the story so much, because the editing was atrocious in this, like really bad, it was like it was first or second draft, the editing was so bad, and the writing, technically, at times was bad. Misplaced commas or no commas at all or just weird sentence structures. The technical aspects of the writing could have been improved greatly and for awhile I was like "yep, this is gonna be a 3 star read" because the writing was just all over the place at times. Also it was third person in the present tense which was jarring at times too. Also there was the depiction of Rian's agent that bothered me. The guy was annoying and an asshole, no doubt, but at times the fact that his weight was pointed out and that he ate all the time bothered me. If he's an asshole, he's an asshole, but don't make it about his weight. It wasn't overt or anything but there was hints of it here and there, so that bothered me.
But I loved the story overall. I loved Rian and Mason. They had great chemistry and were good together. Their love was believable, and the supporting cast of characters were good too, I enjoyed them all and loved to hate the characters I was supposed to hate.
This is an enjoyable read if you can get past on all the grammatical errors and and everything else. It's like a fic that hasn't been beta'd, which is fine, but it was frustrating a lot of the time and could take me out of the story having to fix the errors in my head.
But it's worth it for the story, which is fun and engaging. Two thumbs up for the great story, and Rian and Mason who were wonderful together :D
I like a lot about this romance between two heroes that are over 40. I love their banter and chemistry. I loved watching them fall in love and open up.
Rian starts off as a real jerk and he really isn't whereas Mason is grumpy but gets all the good stuff with wonderful relationships with his son and sister and the town.
Rian is so isolated and really it doesn't make sense given who he is inside. This uncomplicated depiction of pre Oregon Rian and the villains keep this book from being really great oh and the ending need much more development.
But the heart of the book, the love story is really nice.
It was going so well! I love Mason! Then I realized, all they ever do is make coffee in the morning and sandwiches for lunch. That's the plot. So, it kind of petered out towards the end. And it was weird that the son was the secondary "friend" character, because it meant they talk about Mason's sex life way more than what's believable. No kid wants to know about the parent's sex life.
Una bellissima storia romantica e divertente e mi è piaciuta tantissimo! 🤩
WOW, there sure were a lot of extra/missing letters or words not used correctly, for some strange reason. I think reading a story in "present tense" can mess with my mind sometimes, and this was one of those times... ugh! ;p
I enjoyed the story and felt that all the storyline issues were resolved in a timely manner and with enough detail to make me happy! Rian and Mason may not have realized at first that they were perfect for each other... but you are NEVER too old to learn a thing or three and to make a few important changes in your life! The family dynamics of the story were wonderful, but I am still trying to figure out why Jake waited until he was twenty-one to start college, that was a bit weird. Truthfully, at first, I thought Jake was much younger (having just had his braces removed) and then the next thing you knew he was drinking a beer with his dad... yep, talk about a WTH moment! Then we find out he was just short of his 21st birthday and I was like, ahhh... OK! But, anyways, I loved the relationship that he and Mason had. The dad being gay and the son being supportive, yeah... that works for me! This was my first book by this author and I am sure that I will be reading others by her in the future, and of course, looking forward to seeing those aggravating proofreading issues disappear! *grin*
Cliché. The grammar annoyed me as did the speech. Couldn't concentrate on the plot and characters because of the need of an editor. Apologies Author, not for me.
“Pretending to be someone you're not for long enough will cause you to lose the person you really are, or that you once were.” ~ Paul Hudson
Hollywood, by definition, is a toxic environment. It practically demands that you keep up a certain image regardless if it is the real one. Rian Johns, of ' 'The Mason Jar', learns this lesson the hard way when his loose and recklessness lifestyle catches up with him; he ends up in jail on public indecency and drug charges. Then his agent and the studio send him to an undisclosed location to sober up and get himself back together. Rian considers this a harsh sentence until he meets local bar owner, Mason Andrews.
Almost everyone is excited about the fact that movie star, Rian Johns, has come to stay in their town for a few months while he detoxes from his last epic screwup. Mason, owner of the Mason Jar, is reserving judgement until he meets him. When Rian comes through the doors of his bar, Mason is almost ready to toss him back out because of his arrogance and air of entitlement - just because he's a famous actor and thinks he should be treated with deference. Mason treats everyone the same. Rian isn't pleased with the cool reception. It's a while before Rian comes back to the bar, but he has been doing a lot of thinking and his attitude has changed. It's been so long since he has been a “normal” person that he has to remember to do so. Rian realizes that these people are genuine and have no ulterior motive. They don't much from him other than an autograph, picture, and maybe a hug. Rian's not in Hollywood anymore. At first, Mason is skeptical, but when Rian starts pitching in to help, even he has to admit that beneath all the glamor and arrogance, lies a decent person.
Rian has been attracted to Mason, but is hesitant. Rian has never had a real relationship and hasn't a clue how to do serious. Also, he's only going to be in town a few months; that wouldn't have been a problem in the past, but Rian senses that Mason is not a man with whom he can have a short fling; being with Mason will be serious. Mason hasn't been in a relationship since his wife died. He resists Rian's advances until he is able to talk himself into thinking they can have fun while Rian is there and then go their separate ways with fond memories and no hard feelings. The big question is, can Mason do that?
This is the first book I've read by Angelique. She's a wonderful story teller with just the right amount of... well... just about everything; natural-feeling dialogue, some angst, well developed characters, and sexual tension. Rian and Mason are broken men who deserve a chance at happiness. I loved Mason's gruffness and the way he wouldn't give in to Rian. I loved Rian for having enough character to put the artificial garbage behind him and find the man he is meant to be underneath. It takes an admirable amount of character growth to do so. I really enjoyed meeting Mason and Rian and the rest of the gang. Thanks, Angelique! I look forward to reading more about your sexy, complicated men in the future.
✔ Letto!
The Mason Jar is the story of Rian Johns, an actor, and Mason, the owner of the Mason Jar. Since I didn’t finish this book, I don’t know if it’s told from Rian’s pov. It does however start with omniscient, then switch to third person, Mason pov, then switch back to omniscient again. This was all within the first three percent. It drove me nuts.
During the omniscient pov scenes, it was nothing but long, dense monologue telling everything that was happening past, present, plus descriptions of the environment. It was like listening to the most boring, dry, lecture you've ever heard. It wasn’t even Mason’s monologue which would’ve made it more interesting. It was just some mysterious entity’s observations telling readers what was happening. The style the omniscient pov was written in, and the third person pov from Mason’s viewpoint, was totally different. It was like fingernails scratching on a chalkboard. It set my teeth on edge. I couldn’t get past three percent.
To top it off, it’s the same trope as ‘famous person caught with pants down and moves to small town where they hook up with a local’. If the povs were better, then the repetitive trope would not have bothered me.
So, even though I only read a short portion of this book, it was more than enough for me to get an idea of the style of writing that annoyed me. I’m willing to give this author another try because this book could be just a fluke. In the meantime, I can only give, The Mason Jar, 1 Star. Other readers seem to like it despite the odd narration.
There are so many parts of this book that I love but unfortunately it is difficult to read at times due to the lack of editing. The wonderful story and characters had me engaged from the first page and I could not put it down. I fell in love with Mason immediately but it took me a while to warm up to Rian and by the end of the book I loved him too. My favorite part of this story is the amazing relationship that Mason has with his son Jake. Every interaction between them is filled with the love and respect they have for each other. As the relationship between Mason and Rian develops we get to see that though they are very different people they balance each other perfectly. Rian has to decide who he wants in his life and where his career is going before he loses the best relationship he has ever had. This book has smoking hot sex, hilariously funny moments, interference from well-intentioned family and friends and a love story that melted my heart. What makes all of Angelique Jurd's books unique and interesting to me is that all of her characters are real. She does not hold back and every single one of them has faults, deal with real-life problems, make mistakes and have to work to develop and maintain their relationships. She has become one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to read more of her books.
So happy I rescued this book from the depths of my TBR!
This book has been sitting in my TBR forever. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to work me way through my huge collection of books in my kindle app. I’m so glad I finally opened this book and so sorry I waited so long. It’s a fun, sweet, emotional story and hit just the right spot.
Rian is a bad boy famous actor who gets caught in a huge scandal and is sent away to a small town in the Pacific Northwest to keep a low profile and clean up his act. He meets Mason, the owner of the local bar/diner and is intrigued. Mason thinks he’s an arrogant, egotistical ass…which, fair. But as they get to know each other and spend more time together and see below the surface a friendship develops. The attraction is so strong they agree to a fun, no strings fling for the duration of Rian’s stay. Of course all readers of romance know how that’s going to go.
Conflict arises when the paparazzi find Rian and his Hollywood life intrudes on Mason’s quiet, small town existence. Rian’s return to Hollywood is excruciating and heartbreaking. The climactic moment is cheer out loud stuff though I’d have liked a much bigger, uglier, damaging scene with the true villain of the piece. (Note, it was pretty obvious early on who that was but Rian is a bit clueless.) The ending is sweet and sigh inducing. A great read.
A tutti voi buona lettura.

A nice romance, maybe a little same old, same old, but I like Ms. Jurd's writing and pacing. MC's are a famous Hollywood type sent to live in a small town in Oregon while his latest scandal blows over (picture of him in sex act and snorting cocaine). The other MC is a tavern owner in the small town, raising his son who is college bound. The bar owner left his wife years ago when he realized he was gay, she was killed in an auto accident so he raised their son by himself. The actor is full of himself, hounded by paparazzi and his Hollywood manager and friends, but finds some importance (and peace) in his life by finding himself a part of an extended family and by loving a man that treats him as a real person, not just someone who is famous.
As usual with this amazing author this was another outstanding story. You won’t like Rian at the beginning, he’s drinking, snorting, and caught with his pants down, an outrageous, arrogant star, his mantra is ‘find ‘em, fuck ‘em, fling ‘em’. Mason is a quiet, slightly grumpy but loving man running his bar and grill with his son Jake. The polar opposites that meet, what could go wrong? Lots if the hungry, ruthless press get their way and their photos. Wonderful story, great characters, a little bit on the predictable side but very enjoyable, these two men are addictive, their banter and affection is adorable, and the sex is hot!
I usually like this author’s books but this one reads too much like a fairy tale it’s unrealistic, at least to me. I just don’t believe a Hollywood star can just ditch his Hollywood lifestyle for an ordinary person in such a short period of time. And too much sex, yes it’s a thing. I was going to give it 3 stars but the cheese and turkey sandwich bit is quite funny and I love the close bond that Mason and Jake share.
This is such a sweet, sweet love story. Rian and Mason relationship, and the way that Jake encourage his dad to take a chance at happiness with Rian it's simply wonderful.
It's a really emotional book, and you'll find yourself laughing and crying along with the characters. And the writing is great, as always with Angelique Jurd. A recommended read.
Loved the plot, the characters and the writing. The pacing of the story was good, the characters and scenes weren't exaggerated or cliche which happens in romance novels. The characters seemed to have more depth and weren't mirror images of perfection which mostly comes of as unrealistic. Great book!!!
This is a wonderful book...The first I've read by this author.
I loved the plot. How they dealt with the reporter and the manager. The employees of the bar/diner were great, as was Tracy and the dispatcher. Jake was great and his relationship with his dad was wonderful.
I'll definitely be reading other books by this author.
Yeah it had its editing issues but the story was lovely and I haven't had a good cry over a mm book in a long time. All the characters interacted smoothly and held their own. I'm so bad at writing reviews but I hope you'll give this a read it's sweet, funny, emotional....a refreshing storyline.
I really enjoyed reading about Rian and Mason’s journey to their HEA. This was a well written book with lots a relatable characters. If I one complaint about this book it would be the mix messages on drinking and driving, it was not very consistent. I would still recommend this book.
