What a sweet story, but also some shocking discoveries. A little mystery, with a bit of playfulness, and intrigue, I really enjoyed this. Margaret Templeton, is being chosen by her father to go with Captain Sander Morledge, and partake in the festivities during the holiday. Her hearts desire is with another and has been for so many years, Frederick Maddock, Viscount Beacham. He on the other hand has never recovered from her saying no to his proposal. When they see each other again after all those years it was an enlightenment and a telling for them both, Captain Morledge on the other hand has lies, and untold secrets. Do you trust him or run?? Read it and find out. Loved it. Of course as with all of Sherry's books this is good and well written as always.
One never knows what can happen at Christmas. For a novella, this story packed a lot into this delightful tale. The heart feels what the heart feels and sometimes nothing can change that! Margaret Templeton, daughter of a clergyman is content to be a spinster and take care of her sister and father. But her father is determined to have her marry and find her own happiness and family. Matching her up with Captain Sander Morledge to help him host his Christmas party, her father feels he has found her the perfect match. Unfortunately Margaret runs into her longtime friend and true love, Frederick Maddock, who is invited to the party. Sounds good so far? Well as I often say, things are not always as they appear and such is the case at Morledge's house. There is a hugh mystery and as the party begins, secrets come out and mistletoe works it magic!! As all of Sherry's stories, this will go on your to be read again shelf!!
I love how Sherry Ewing never lets love die. Margaret has decided to marry and is asked by her father, she truly dotes on her father, to act as hostess for a Christmas party given by widower Captain Morledge. Margaret figures she can be a good mother to the 2 small sons of the captain and use the party as a rough draft of her life as the wife of Morledge. Your first love is never forgotten, even after many years, and Margaret runs into her true love- Frederick. She is below his station in life and he could never marry her. Does this stop Frederick?? No spoilers- you will have to read that for yourself. haha. I truly loved this story.
Margaret Templeton is in need of a husband. At least that is what her father feels. She takes care of her sister and clergyman father since her mother has passed. She loves reading and loves her childhood friend Lord Frederick Viscount Beacham. He once proposed but she turned him down since she knew his parents would never approve. Now she is in a pickle. Her father has asked Captain Morledge who is a widower with two small boys. She agrees to be a Hostess at his Christmas party and then will decide. While being chaperoned she does indeed do her job but Lord Frederick has other plans. Those plans do NOT include the Captain who rumors are he killed his other wife. Well a few surprises are in the Captain's manor home and both Margaret and Frederick expose. Not only do they find the Captain is not for Margaret he is not for a few others trapped in the home...quite the mystery hidden inside a love story!
Under the Mistletoe is a sweet love story with a touch of mystery. It's a short story you can enjoy anytime. No need to wait for Christmas. I love the story and highly recommend it. I received the book as a gift and volunteered to review it.
I find it corny. Plus, I couldn't understand the logic on why Sander Morledge’s had locked his maimed wife in her bedchamber instead of their sons since they're fully capable to mobilize. The alleged Mrs. Morledge couldn't do anything other than stay in her bed and her only way to move is by the rolling chair.
Under the Mistletoe Much to her father’s chagrin, Margaret Templeton is happy being a bluestocking spinster. Since, the only man she, a clergyman’s daughter, has ever loved is beyond her reach. With her father determined to see her settled and happy before he dies he agrees to Captain Morledge’s innocent request to have Margaret help him host his annual ball. Loving her father so, Margaret agrees to see if anything can develop between her and the Captain. What she doesn’t count on is being in close proximity to the love of her life. Viscount Frederick Beacham has spent years trying to forget one woman – the woman he loves beyond reason, the woman who refused his marriage proposal. A feat he thought he had finally accomplished. Until the mere mention of her name and that she was in London turned his heart upside-down. Seeking her out he finds that years will never erase his love for her nor will anyone ever replace her. Learning her reason for being in London, Frederick vows to, at the very least, protect her from harm and at the most convince her that she belongs with him. Margaret tries to go about her hosting duties normally but soon gathers that all is not right in the Captain’s household. Top those feelings with seeing Frederick at every turn has Margaret in a turmoil. One that may put her life in jeopardy. Will Frederick uncover the Captain’s true motives before it is too late or will he lose Margaret forever? Sherry Ewing writes a delightful tale full of suspense. It constantly had this reader trying to figure out what sinister deed the Captain had done, what he would do when thwarted, and how all this would affect Margaret’s love for Frederick.
Margaret Templeton is a vicar's daughter, and is suffering from an influx of suitors encouraged by her father. She's content to be a bluestocking spinster.
Frederick Maddock, Viscount Beacham, was Margaret's childhood friend. Frederick proposed to Margaret years ago. She loved him, but refused his proposal because she felt his parents would not be able to accept her.
Captain Sander Morledge approaches Joseph Templeton, requesting that Margaret be allowed to be hostess for a Christmas ball and house party he will be hosting at his country manor. He invites Frederick to the house party when he bumps into Frederick and Margaret talking near a bookstore.
I gave this one three stars for two reasons. First, because I kept looking for why Frederick and Margaret love each other to the point of each never marrying for years, and was just not finding it. Second, because there were details here and there that I thought could have been improved. For example, why did Morledge invite Freddy? Margaret wondered about this, I wondered about it, and there was never an answer.
I still liked and enjoyed the story. It was clean, apart from a couple of risque comments.
When Margaret decides that she must do her duty and get married she acts as hostess for Captain Morledge. However the man she has always cared for , Frederick has other ideas when he finds out she is back in London. This was one of the stories where you like the heroine but you want to shake her, grab her , point her at the hero and say That Way you ninny! Frederick was great, he dropped everything the minute she was back in town and is so protective of her. The Captain now that is a whole different story *shudder. There was a very interesting twist that I wasn't expecting, which is very impressive in a novella.
Genre ~ Regency Series ~ No Ending ~ HEA (No Cliffhanger) Sex ~ Sweet (A Few Kisses) Would I read again ~ Yes
Under the Mistletoe by Sherry Ewing has to be the best story about the romance that can be found by becoming a holiday hostess for a Christmas party. Margaret Templeton has been asked to be the holiday hostess for Captain Morledge’s Christmas, and to soon after become his wife. Frederick Maddock, Viscount Beacham, is a guest who still holds a place in his heart for the fair Margaret and hopes to win her back.
Past loves and the hope for a future marriage, are some of the exciting romantic happenings that occur in this wonderful Christmas story.
**I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review** This is a quick and entertaining holiday read. In this story we meet Margaret, a smart and independent lady... a "bluestocking" if you will. At her father's request she is to marry, but before an arrangement can be met Margaret encounters a man from her past. Frederick... the man who proposed to her some years earlier, the man she refused because she felt herself beneath him socially and economically, the man she has never stopped loving.
Margaret has been asked to be a holiday hostess for Captain Morledge in anticipation of a marital match. Frederick has always loved Margaret but was rejected when he proposed as Margaret thought his parents would not approve. When it comes to love, one should always follow their heart and once Frederick meets back up with Margaret, that is exactly what he intends for both of them. Captain Morledge has other plans and they are not nice. Such a twist at the end that was not anticipated!
Margaret Templeton is asked to act as hostess for Captain Sander Morledge's Christmas party and possibly end up marrying him as well. Margaret agrees to do this not knowing that she would have to see the man who once held her heart. Frederick Maddock, Viscount Beacham has never forgotten the young woman he has fallen in love with, and his feelings are fairly evident when he sees her at the same holiday event that she's hosting for the Captain. Will she accept Captain Sanders proposal and become not only his bride, but Mother to his children as well? Or will she realize that she is still in love with Frederick and that he's the only one for her? Which man will she choose and who will make her happy? As usual Sherry Ewing's books are so incredible that I can't put them down. Once I start I never want to stop reading. Another winner for Ms. Ewing. I loved this story and she did such an amazing job that I felt like I was part of the novella. Wow is how I sum this up.
