A former assassin, battling her demons. A sinister enemy, determined to destroy her. A wily street kid, caught in the middle.
Former assassin and SHEN operative Leine Basso is fresh off an assignment rescuing an American teenager from a terrorist group in Libya when she thwarts the murder of a street kid in Tripoli. Leine agrees to help the girl find her family, but must first visit a refugee camp in the desert where there are disturbing reports of mysterious abductions.
Leaving the camp, Leine comes under a surprise attack–but only a handful of people knew her true mission. Who has betrayed her? The more she discovers about the abductions, the more of a target she becomes, forcing her to revisit a dark and violent past she thought she’d left behind. But it's easy--too easy to fall back to her old ways.
And it could get her killed.
Will she be able to survive a dark return?
If you like gritty, fast-paced, can’t-put-it-down thrillers with a strong female lead who won’t take no for an answer, then you’ll love Dark Return.

I received a free advance ARC copy from the author and I also purchased a copy from amazon.com. Something I like to do, to support my favorite authors.
D.V. Berkom's done it again, it's only June, yet Dark Return's my favorite read of the year and it'll take another amazing read to knock it off it's perch.
Dark Return, is brilliantly written, has intertwining storyline, that explodes as they come together in the end and leaves you eagerly awaiting the next Line Basso adventure.
I love the Line Basso character, she's an ex-assassin that works for SHEN, as an operative who rescues victims from human trafficking. She's also super human, tough as nails, has no fear, can handle any situation, lethal with any guns, lethal with a knife and is a protector of the weak.
Those that can't defend themselves. Now with Dark Return, you learn she has a soft side to her tough exterior and all because of an adorable orphan, who takes over the story.
The coolest thing with this series, is that Berkom just grabs your attention from the first paragraph, just transports you into the pages, your right their for all the action, love that she adds new elements to the story, which makes the reading more enjoyable and be them good or bad, she just vividly brings her characters to life.
With 'Dark Return', she puts her super action hero Leine hot on the trail of terrorist's in Libya, that are sex trafficking, then straps her readers into a heart pounding, edge of your seat read, that's full of twist and turns, fast paced, seasoned with a little trickery and has you hop scotching between Libya and Paris. You also get to meet Jinn, an orphan who just takes over the story, had my fingers crossed that nothing bad happened to her and can't wait to see what D.V. has in store for her.
My favorite element with D.V., is the trickery she adds to her storyline, had me totally convinced that her old friend Stone was selling her out verse thinking her old friend Henri would do it.
Lastly 'Dark Return' really isn't a stand alone novel, you'll need to read 'the Last Deception' first.
This novel came up in my also bought by the same author page so I thought I’d check it out, quickly discovering an action-packed thriller with a strong and highly-capable heroine in Leine Basso, a former assassin turned supporter of refugee movements through her personal brand of extreme action.
What I liked from the onset was the stories setting, in Libya with refugee camps, street kids, insurgents and human traffickers reminding us that terrorism’s worst crimes are always committed in the poorest countries.
The action moves from Tripoli to the desert and across the Mediterranean to Paris introducing a host of interesting characters, friends and foes alike.I was particularly impressed with the relationship forged between Basso and a young Libyan street kid known as Djinn.
What impressed me more was discovering half way through that this book is part of a series, but it was so well self-contained I didn’t notice nor did I feel like I was missing something. A great action thriller with geopolitical perspective on the terrors of modern human trafficking.Highly recommended.
WOO HOO! Another fabulous thriller featuring the gun toting former assassin Leine Basso. I love this strong, which is putting it mildly, female character. She is a former government assassin, now working with SHEN, an antitrafficking organization. She shows the scumbags of the world no mercy. I love that she has a trophy wall, even though it is a little serial killer creepy.
SHEN – Stop Human Enslavement Now
I think things are about to change for Leine, when she meets Jinn, a child of the Marketplace. She is like a ghost, one minute you see here, the next she’s gone. She is feisty, clever and Leine has her work cut out for her winning her trust. I have some feelings for Jinn and I wonder….
Slave auctions. Oh man, I hate to even think about this, especially because I know it goes on to this day. DV Berkom does her research, so her stories read all too real.
I love how, laying on her back, in her most DIRE STRAITS, Leine thinks of Carl Sagan saying, there were “billions and billions of stars in the galaxy.” I used to watch that show. It’s DV adding the small things that makes her books hit all my buttons, making me want more.
The Leopard has come out of her retirement and made her ‘DARK RETURN’ to her old life.
Hmmm…is Kadeem Hakim a good guy or a bad guy? DV Berkom’s not telling, at least, not yet.
Bullets and RPGs are flying, but Leine feels the need to save everyone. Guilt drives her to move heaven and earth to get those who dare to cross her line. If you think you can tell her no, think again. Leine enjoys meting out her own punishment to traffickers and terrorists. She is driven, she is aggressive, she is…
L – oyal
E – nterprising

N – ecessary

Every time she thought of her man, Santiago Jenson, and LAPD detective, she put aside that he fought within the law and she crossed the line, walking to the beat of her own drum. I love this characters so much, I just hope Santa can accept her as she is, not perfect, but definitely someone you want at your side during the bad times.
The intrigue and suspense unravel as the words splash across the pages. DV Berkom’s books are so intense and Dark Return only confirms for me the huge amount of work she puts into research, making the book read as if it is a true story. This page turning thriller is filled with nonstop action, characters that stole my heart and I love that I don’t know where I’m going until I get there. Not all will survive, but the journey is more than worth it.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Dark Return by DV Berkom
I received this book from the author for an unbiased review. This book is awesome. The characters and storyline are well developed. The suspense left me on the edge of my seat. It is the first book in the series I read and will definitely read the others while Is a waiting for D.V. Berkom to write the next one.
I've read the review copy of 'Dark Return' and it is a great progression of the arc of the series. DV Berkom continues to polish her art, and has another winner in this novel. Dark Return finds Leine completing her latest dramatic rescue with SHEN, and finds her rescued charge is somewhat numb to the circumstances around her. Leine arranges their escape, only to be intercepted and chased by members of the kidnappers' group. Leine and the driver from SHEN manage to dodge pursuit and deliver their charge to the safe location for travel to reunite with her family.
Meanwhile, an embedded agent in the terrorist organization that sponsors the kidnappings is discovered and killed shortly after an encounter with a local girl, who turns out to have peculiar talents and a network of friends who may be able to help her stay alive after the encounter.
Leine is sent to a nearby refugee camp where the disappearance has been reported of children who have no families with them. Leine investigates and eventually connects with the local girl, named Jinn, who helps Leine to infiltrate and eventually creates havoc with the leader of the terrorists. Action moves to Paris, where the original rescue is first reunited with her parents, then briefly disappears. She resurfaces in a critically dangerous situation which sets up Leine's confrontation with the terrorists and yet another rescue attempt to save Jinn from a seemingly impossible situation.
The story comes to a full conclusion of all the issues raised from its beginning, but there is a cliff-hanger that guarantees Leine has to deal with multiple challenges, both personal and professional. I hope Berkom writes the subsequent story very soon. The suspense is killing me (and hopefully not any of our favorite characters...).
DV Berkom has developed a main character whom the reader grows to care about through this series. At the beginning she faced burnout from a dangerous job, betrayal from her superior, and loss of loved ones, then finds a cause worthy of her well-developed talents. Throughout her books, Berkom has matured as a solid writer with similarities to Mark Greaney, Mark Dawson (John Milton series), and a whisper of Barry Eisler (whose new Livia Lone series comes to mind as the reader proceeds through the arc of the Leine Basso series).
I would love to see Berkom's books find their way to broader circulation, including libraries where new readers might develop an affinity for her writing. I suggest reading this series starting with the prequel, book #5, A Killing Truth. This brings a better perspective to book #1, Serial Date, which starts her post-Agency saga.
Oh wow!!!!! I read this when the book first came out and I enjoyed it then, so I just had to get the audio version. So glad I did there is not many authors that can continually improve with each book but D.V is just one of those authors because each book is better than the last and this book was even better than I remembered. I love Leine, she is such a great character with a real sense of right and wrong so you know you are going to get plenty of action, along with very strong plot line that makes you think. All you can do is sit back enjoy the ride and hope the characters you like make it to the end of the book. Whoo-hoo can't wait for the next book and well worth the cost of a credit. After safely returning a young girl to her family Leine is tasked with going undercover in a refugee camp as a reporter to find out why orphaned children are going missing. Before she gets there she befriends a young street kid called Jinn after saving her life when she stops two thugs from killing her. Agreeing to help her Leine takes her with her to the camp to find her missing mother. Not everything and everyone is what they seem at the camp and when leaving the camp Leine is attacked and hurt. She gets help by an unexpected source but by doing so she puts everybody in danger. This is more than just missing children someone wants them for a reason and when things with a previously rescued child turns deadly Leine might just have to go it alone in order to keep everyone safe. The problem is someone knows about Jinn I really like the narrator and think she helps to bring the characters to life by giving each character there own voice.
I love Leine. I like her attitude in particular. I like to think that I am half decent in a crisis, but she isn’t just half decent, she’s inspirationally fabulous. In this latest instalment she goes off on a slight tangent, and at one point I was seriously worried that DV Berkom might be about to kill her off. This is an exceptional page turner. I wanted to read it all, super fast so I forced myself to ration it so I could enjoy the suspense. That was a real challenge. The story is, as usual, timely and incredibly believable, with the locations feeling genuine and realistic. I feel that DV Berkom does plenty of research, but sneaks all that in. This could almost be a memoir given the attention to detail.
I recently loaded all my Leine Bassos onto my husband’s tablet, so he could read them, and whilst I was reading Dark Return he was getting progressively more antsy asking when I’d load it up. Apparently my face is very expressive when I read and he could tell I was enjoying it and holding my breath in places. I was fortunate enough to be reading an early copy, but I enjoyed it so much I’ve preordered so come release date, he can have his own.
Forget Bourne and Bond. Bring on Basso In fact, bring on more Basso asap!
This series just keeps getting better and better. All of D.V. Berkrom's books are gripping, thrilling and full of action. The excellence in the writing is immediately apparent in the way the stories just grab you and keep you embraced and enthralled until the very last word. The characters and the story are all well developed and easy to follow, flowing at a pace that keeps your blood pumping and not wanting to put it down. There is always mystery and suspense, and let me also tell you that this book is not "the same as all the rest," it is strong and holds its own. Believable in all the areas it touches, the main character, a former assassin takes you to worlds and places that allow you to put yourself there as well. No spoilers here, just know that whether this is your first Leine Basso book or the 6th, you will enjoy this no matter. This book kept my Kindle pages flipping keeping me up way past my bedtime. I am looking forward to the next Leine Basso story. This book, as the others does NOT disappoint!
With so many assassin-based books on the market, it’s hard to get excited about another one, but having enjoyed previous Leine Basso thrillers, I started on this one as soon as I could. And - I couldn’t put it down. My entire Saturday has been spent reading Dark Return.
You don’t know what’s coming next - there are surprises after surprises. There are characters who are familiar from previous books, but this one definitely stands alone - though you may want to go back and read any earlier Leine Basso novels that you’ve missed.
Alliances, terrorism, humanitarian causes … trust and caring among all the deception and uncertainty. Leine will keep your interest throughout. The only problem is that it ended - and now I have to wait impatiently for the next one to be written.
Leine Basso is a great character, and ex assassin who now works as a field agent for a charity that works against human trafficking. In this book she gets caught up in a plot to abduct children from a refugee camp near Tripoli. The action is truly breathtaking and tied into a great story with lots of double crossing and a truly evil plot from an old adversary of Leine's. The climax is a real adrenaline fest that kept my eyes glued to the screen of my Kindle. I received an advance copy of the book, but this review is honest and voluntarily written.
Pure brilliance. I loved this book; one of my favorites that I've read this year. Jinn is my new superhero. Dark Return was a thrill-a-minute, page-turning suspense that never lets up with action and intrigue. The author, DV Berkom, is a master when it comes to character development and the storyline. There were even moments when I was teary-eyed in some of the scenes.
I hope the next book in the Leine Basso thrillers comes out soon!
DARK RETURN by D V Berkom Leine Basso had no regrets looking at the dead man, one down, more to go. She was one person against the sale of human beings. SHEN organization she works for, wanting her to go to Tunisani, children under ten. Before leaving she rescues Jinn, a young girl living on the streets, pick pocket an item, she’s in danger now. Someone wants them dead, and Leine is injured. Plans went terrible wrong, would they get rescued. Leine has a mission, would it ever stop, for her to have a life. I enjoy her books, you meet the main characterizes, you feel like you know them personally. The story flows taking you on a ride you won’t forget. Leine made a close friend with Jinn, but lost some others she had worked with. Each book is better than the last, and readers won’t want to miss. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Dark Return by D. V. Berkom is one of the best Leine Basso stories to date. It has a child's undying love for her. It tells of an old friend's treachery an another friend's loyalty. It also tells how another person wants to start a holy war in many countries at one time. If I'm not mistaken we will see the return of "The Leopard" in the next story. I received this story for an honest review and I'm positive you will enjoy reading this story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.If you like a lot of action and narrow escapes, this book is for you. Leine just finished her assignment when she helps a street girl from being killed. Leine agrees to also help the girl find her family, but wants to see why there have been so many abductions from a refugee camp. When leaving there, Leine is surprised attacked. Someone knows why she is there, but who betrayed her? This case leads her down her own dark past that there may not be an escape to this time.
I received a copy of the ebook. Leine is back and this is full of the excitement and action you expect in a DV Berkom book. She is in Libya and is nearly burnt out, but sees more kids needing rescued and who else is there? Kids are going missing from a refugee camp and Leine investigates the problem and finds more than she expects.
What can I say that’s not been said. There are a few authors that you know when a new book appears you are going to get a brilliant read. D.V.Berkam is one of them and Leine Basso is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat and burning the midnight oil . This latest episode gets the emotional adrenaline cranked up and you feel fit to burst. I absolutely loved this story and can’t wait for the next gut wrenching tale. As the Hot Chocolate song goes , Everyone’s a winner baby.
Excellent. There is no other way to describe it. I read it in one go it was that good. Leine is one hell of a badass. Looking forward to the next one. I really do hope she doesn’t retire any time soon. Just my type of book. Very highly recommended must read.
A typical adventure for Leine Basso well written by DV Berkom. Leine is difficult to control and has her own way of solving a problem. Always doing right for innocent people in bad situations. As usual an enjoyable read. I am looking forward to hearing from Leine and any other of Ms. Berkom’s characters.
Constant action in this thriller. Leine Brasso, a former assassin, now works for SHEN. SHEN is an organization the works to free children from human trafficking. Lenine ends up going to Tripoli. She runs into a street smart kid, Jinn, she offers to help find her family. There are dangerous human traffickers that will kill to keep their business. A refugee camp for children is supposed to keep them safe, but there in underling danger there.
My third read from author D.V. Berkom with a kick-ass female lead and we have a winner! I love mystery & espionage & Berkom has both in this book. She's created a character you want to read more about! I've jumped from book 1 to book 6, but hey, it's what I own. I have to get more by this author about this character.
An international children’s aid group, terrorists, and a power hungry individual who will use any methods to gain power. Edge of your seat action throughout, with a great plot. Can Leine save the day?
Another great Leine Basso thriller from D.V. Berkom
I have read all of D.V.'s books and they keep getting better. This latest thrill ride will leave you breathless and wanting to find out what will happen right now but we will have to wait until the next book.
Another great in this series. Leine Basso just finished an assignment and ends up with another. She stops a murder of a street kid and promises to find the parents. Another couldn’t put down books and I’m totally ready for the next.
Having just completed a rescue mission for Stop Human Enslavement Now (SHEN), former assassin, Leine Basso, is asked to check up on a case of children missing from a refugee camp. On what she thinks will be a routine mission, she meets a street waif who has witnessed a murder and is being pursued by the killers and decides to help the young girl get to safety. The routine check at the camp turns into anything but, and Leine and her new charge find themselves on the run from a shadowy figure running a human trafficking ring with a deadly mission. They make a big mistake when they make a try for Leine—now, it’s her or them, and she has every intention of surviving. Dark Return by D V Berkom is without doubt, the best Leine Basso thriller to date. Like its predecessors, it’s chocked full of blood-chilling action, and it skillfully merges two of the world’s greatest evils, human trafficking and terrorism, in a tale that will grab you by the short hairs and not let go. Basso at her baddest—don’t miss it. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
I’ve read most of Leine’s stories, and I love them all- fast paced, lots of action, surprises you don’t see coming...I hope Santa doesn’t leave her life, although it does sound like Jack is pretty interested....looking forward to the next Leine book, hope it’s soon !
I haven't been giving any reviews lately (because I'm lazy) but I had to make an exception with this book. It was beyond good--full of suspense and thrills. A must read.
Another excellent Leone Basso thriller. Full of action, Great plot, likeable characters, a race to the finish! I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A total thriller that keeps you wanting to read more. Leine Basso comes back in full force that keeps you intrigued. A new character is introduced in this story , Jinn, that Basso saves when she is working for SHEN. Can't wait for the next book to come out. I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Leine Basso returns to the dark underworld to combat child trafficking. This time, terrorists are using orphans in a way she is compelled to fight. Another winner for DV Berkom.
