Perfect for fans of Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and the previous Stick Dog books, Tom Watson’s hilarious series continues with a backyard adventure complete with crunchy tacos, squishy guacamole, and flying unicorns!
HEY! WHAT’S THAT IN THE TREE? IT’S AN EMERGENCY!
When Karen sprints into Stick Dog’s pipe and declares an emergency, Stick Dog springs into action. After racing through the woods with his squad of strays, Stick Dog discovers there’s no crisis at all. But there is a great opportunity to feed his hungry friends.
As a family of humans plans to feast on tacos, tortilla chips, and guacamole, Stick Dog makes plans of his own. To feed Mutt, Karen, Poo-Poo, and Stripes, he’ll need all his smarts and problem-solving skills.
While his hungry, drooling, goofy friends prepare to chow down, something nags Stick Dog at the edge of his mind. What is that thing swinging in a tree? And how can he get it?
If this funny, madcap, daring quest succeeds, it’s taco time for these crazy canines!
Tom is the author and draws the original sketches for all the Stick Dog stories. He lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter and son. They also have a dog named Shadow. Tom did not want to name the dog Shadow. He wanted to name him ‘Put Your Shirt On.’ It’s a long story. Sometimes when Tom is visiting schools, he shares the story.
Tom’s first jobs out of college were in politics. He worked for U.S. Senator John Glenn and as the Chief Speechwriter for the Governor of Ohio. He has also worked in marketing and advertising. He likes writing books for kids a lot more than writing speeches and other things for grown-ups. He thinks kids are way smarter than grown-ups.
This is a very funny book about the adventure of stick dog and his friends. Out of nowhere, on an ordinary day, stick dog and his friends find out they have some rescuing to do but who or what is it? Figure out this mystery in this book! I like the dog gang's logic to discover the different things used by humans.
Stick Dog and his friends are hungry and are on a hunt for food. They come across a family preparing for a meal in the backyard, preceded by a game of badminton. It will be followed by a meal of guacamole, chips and tacos along with a special dessert. The humor and crazy lack of logic among the dogs discussing various subjects are sure to tickle the funny bones of readers. Even young readers will be sure to hone in on the illogic rampant throughout the story.
I think this book is very funny. I think kids will like it. I liked when the dog Karen thinks her legs are getting longer. In the books, Stick Dog and his friends find a family eating Tacos and they try to get food using some tricks. They get confused about a unicorn in a tree and think they can eat it. It is all very funny. (Review by Allison, 4th grade)
My first visit with Stick Dog and I laughed so hard at this little band of dogs that when I finished it I had to go back and request some more of them. NO I am not reading them to the grandkid, I am just reading them.
This is another series that I could refer to students that have read The Diary of the Wimpy Kids. It is about four homeless dogs and their adventures to get food. This book has tons of inferring in it and could become a great lesson.
Okay so it gets serious at the start but it gets completely funny as the pages go on. Karen doesn't get her tail, but she flies so it's almost as good. 😊 My nine year old son has read and reread these books alot and that tells me they are GREAT books.
another cute story. stick dog is getting sneakier & i think k his crew is getting more clueless than ever. lots of hilarious bikinis in this one as the dogs get carried away with their unit for food.
This is all I have time for these days (COVID era), trying to help my daughter get her reading done for school.
It was decent for a kids book. The dogs certainly had the mind of a child...very distracted and kept going from one point to the other. Honestly, the book could be shorter if not for the rambling of the other dogs.
I also wish I could have heard the humans POV at the end.
Hahah...I can’t believe I am reviewing a children’s book at the moment, but why not? I read it and I should tell what I think about it. 😀
I wonder if kiddos who have been reading the stick dog series in order, will still be enthralled by book #9. As a teacher and an adult, I am ready to move on. For me, the best part of this book was the drawing lesson at the end. A step-by-step guide to drawing the characters is totally fun!
I love that my son (age 8) loves this series. This was another great book. I love how well Stick Dog responses to his friends...always kindly even when clearly there are several opportunities to yell in frustration. It was smart and funnily written. I enjoy reading them as an adult!
