For courses in U.S. History
Develop historical thinkers through the stories that defined history In By the People , author Jim Fraser tells resonant stories of the many different people who have shaped the United States as it is today – from everyday women and men to the most important leaders of their day. By leveraging both the relatable and remarkable people in U.S. history, By The People empowers students to focus on historical analysis and interpretation rather than simply memorize information. The result? A class full of historical thinkers who see themselves in history, and who may be inspired to join the list of those who have helped build a better, more hopeful country.
Also available with MyHistoryLab ® MyHistoryLab for the U.S. History Survey course extends learning online, engaging students and improving results. Media resources with assignments bring concepts to life, and offer students opportunities to practice applying what they’ve learned. And the Writing Space helps educators develop and assess concept mastery and critical thinking through writing, quickly and easily. Please note: this version of MyHistoryLab does not include an eText.
By the People: A History of the Unites States is also available via REVEL ™, an immersive learning experience designed for the way today's students read, think, and learn.
I read this last year in 2016 and it was terrible, it was not interesting at all. Most of the chapters had sections that were far too long and dull to read accompanied by trite questions; it was like watching cement dry. The AP Euro book is far better and much more detailed.
This is the worst book I have ever read in my life. The size and mass of it alone has given me back issues that will stay with me for the rest of my life, while simply trying to carry it for class. This book is better used as a doorstop or to throw at someone in a life or death situation. This book should not be used for the intended purpose of study, fire starter for a nice bonfire would be much better. I also would like to discuss the cost of this book. This book was very expensive although I was able to get it used was still $80. LISTEN HERE $80 FOR A BOOK LIKE THIS IS NOT WORTH IT. Take my advice just go buy a doorstop and some good books from Barnes and noble and you will be much happier with the money spent there and the uses will be taken care of.
To the future children who are forced to read this for school, I am praying for you good luck you will need it. I poured hours of my life into outline every chapter and I will never get that time back and i will mourn that forever
Unbelievable that this book is accepted as a "Textbook"!!! Very biased & inaccuracies are ridiculous. Writing style is dry and incoherent. Don't waste your time or money.
i didn't lovee the plot?? controversial take but this colombus guy is a total nut job. are we gonna move past the point where he committed mass genocide? yes it's acknowledged but are we serious? also no character arc boooo!!! 🍅🍅how do we just move onto the roaring twenties (a decade can't roar DINGUS!) and the american revolution and even 9/11 after that. also I wish we could've seen more about this jefferson character. could he have been a furry bisexual transmasc art education major? anyways it was good i guess. sorry for the spoilers :(

This was genuinely the single worse piece of literature I have ever been forced to read. Reading and outlining it every week was literal torture. At this point, my brain can’t tell the difference between reading this and medieval torture methods. I’m done with those outlines and this book for good and it has lifted a huge weight off my chest, literally and figuratively because this book is a monster. I made the mistake of lugging this book to and from school countless times and every time, the next day, I couldn’t lift my arms. This book deserves to be burned, crushed, melted, and absolutely demolished all at the same time, I’m still trying to figure out how to do that but I’ll let you know when I do. I’ll probably be selling this to a young, unfortunate soul after the AP test because this book cost WAY too much money, an absurd amount. The only thing this book is good for is throwing it at people in a life or death situation or if your friends are being annoying because they’re happy because they take normal history, trust me I’ve tried it a few times, no one was seriously hurt though because I didn’t actually do it but I imagined throwing it at my opps. If you want to study US History, just watch Hamilton, it’s far more entertaining and there’s some hot actors, and the songs deserve to be on repeat everywhere. So just save yourself the trouble, save your $80, and go watch Hamilton.
For anyone taking APUSH next year, God bless….genuinely all around a terrible awful horrible experience with information that I will be forced to recall in a 3 hour circle of hell AP test on May 9th. Word to the wise, go watch Heimler’s history on YouTube, far better than outlining this horror story of a country. God bless and good luck.
Finally finished this (almost) 1000 page textbook for APUSH. I generally don't like textbooks (nor would I read this in my leisure time), but I think I learned a lot about U.S. history that I can apply to my daily life. It did a good job of showing the continuities and changes in different political, social, and economic aspects, but one complaint would be that it jumps around in chronology sometimes which makes it hard to follow what event happened first.
finally finished this bs and the ap exam bro. It was definitely heavily biased and I wish they wouldn't include so many unnecessary details. ALso, towards the end of the year, the writers of the book was feeling it too ahaha I found too many typos to cry over
Inaccuries everywhere. Retells history from an anti-american point of view. Absolutely and overwhelmingly biased towards the radical left. Do not buy or use for class!
