Hunting Midnight

Rate this book
For hundreds of years, a pack of shape-shifting immortals has been content to stay hidden deep within the Scottish wood, far from the dangers of the human world. But when the pack leader, Ulric, is betrayed by his longtime lover, he recklessly ventures beyond the borders of the forest, and starts roaming the streets of Bridesmere. It is there that he encounters Juliana Buxton, a dutiful daughter of a successful merchant. Ulric finds Juliana’s wholesomeness deliciously irresistible, and consents to help her escape the clutches of her much older betrothed—if only to seduce her.

For Juliana, Ulric’s gentle fury inflames her desire and finally introduces her to the wickedly sensuous delights of searing passion. And as she begins to uncover the truth about his secret identity, something altogether new grows within in her—a forbidden longing to become immortal herself and remain by Ulric’s side. But will Ulric grant the innocent maiden her bold wish, or will he cast her from his life and send her back to the treacherous world beyond the caves?

plot overview:
- girl runs away from father trying to marry her off to an old man
- she meets a man who is is a cross between a shapeshifter and a vampire. He feels betrayed after his last love married someone else.
- their eyes lock across a crowded room and fall for each other STRAIGHT AWAY
- their first night they have lots of incredible earthshaking sex that ruins them for all others for the rest of their days (he is an immortal so that is a hell of a long time)
- usual stuff about love rivals, unsure how the other person feels, and the whole immortal/mortal thing
- they have lots more incredible earthshaking sex (sometimes resulting in sparkling stars).

Aside from the scenes where they want sex, then have sex, and then think about how the sex was (did I mention that it was incredible?) there is not much left in the book.

It is good though if you just wanted a quick read that you didn't have to think too much about.

Emma Holly was one of the first authors I read when I was discovering PNR. Her books are ALWAYS sexy, steamy, hot, erotic, and delicious. This was no exception.

Ulric is the wolf pack leader and upyr trying to get over his broken heart from Gillian, the female who left him for a human. Juliana is suppose to go into an arranged marriage to a man she doesn't love. Deciding to runaway and seek her fortune elsewhere, she comes upon the square where Ulric, using his protective glamour, is singing songs for coin. Once he sees Juliana he thralls her into his arms and they make love. Juliana knows at once what he is and attempts to blackmail him into making her an upyr. He promises her that by the end of the summer he would make her an upyr if she still wants that.

The story is sexy, erotic and hot with also enough twists turns, adventure and peril to keep you interested. I loved every minute. I cannot wait to read the next one.

Erotica, Paranormal, Shape-shifting vampires, wolves, birds, upyrs, & more creatures.

Had some interesting intriguing parts, I actually tried to read the 2nd book in this series but was so bored had to stop reading it. Will take them back to library. :-( the only good thing about the books so far is that they have excellent sex scenes, but I need a better faster story line to go with the sex. lol

Right of the bat, sex played a big role in this read. Ulric, after his devastation of losing Gillian, stays in Bridesmere for no other reason but to please himself. Gillian, a merchants daughter has been betrothed to another whom she cannot perceive as partner material.
As per non spoiling rule, will touch the surface. Gillian, be known to her, has an inclination of upyer. Fallen into the clutches of Ulric, a bargain was set to help her, but also to help himself too.
We still interact with previous characters and new members too. As stated, there was a lot of petting between Ulric & Julianna, but also more of an understanding of who the Upyer are.
A full description is offered by Emma Holly on the storyline.

This is the second book I read from Emma Holly. I also have not read any other books from the series but I can say that this book had me in its clutches.

This book revolves around Ulric, an upyr, and Juliana, a human girl. The synopsis did not really give anything as to what you'd be expecting to happen in their story, which is one of the reasons I was hesitant to pick it up, but when I did, captivated would be an apt description for when I read it.

If you were to ask me of Ulric's characters, I would say he is not an uncomplicated male, if he wants something, he'll have it - not until Gillian. However, he was also the type of MMC who was not resistant to change, especially when the FMC, Juliana, came.

Although the sex might have come too fast for some, I think it also played a major part in the story. And this only proved as to how deeply entwined the bond of Ulric and Juliana - because of all the women in that moment, why her? If you are also unaware, Ulric was trying to overcome the pain Gillian left him with - I would not blame all of this pain entirely on Gillian though since based on Ulric's POV, he was controlling and possessive.

Now Jillian. I love that Jillian is reasonable. She's smart, strong, and COMMUNICATES - when's something wrong, she does not hesitate in confiding to Ulric. This made me love the book more. Because in most books, they usually write the FMCs as someone who is always overcome by their emotions that it renders them to become unreasonable. I also love that fact that they are well-attuned and complemented each other. The chemistry was almost tangible.

Moreover, Ulric was also not hesitant to admit that he had fallen in love. It was not like any other MMCs wherein they would emotionally hurt the FMCs because they could not move on. And for me, he delivered it in the best way possible:

"Juliana was real to him now, as real as he was to himself. Because of this, he was forced to admit the very last thing he wanted to. Less than a fortnight after meeting her, less than a month after Gillian broke his heart, he had fallen in love with this human girl."

I SWEAR.

What I would have loved more though is if their characters were delved on more. Like, although there was this spark between them, it also would have been better if it was emphasized more as to what really made them fall for each during their journey to Ulric's territory. But overall, this was a great read. It's light, it's sweet, and it's spicy. All I love in a book in one.

This is a different story to anything I have ever read. It is a story about upyr or shifters into wolves. The superstition is more vampire that werewolf. I liked this story, although it was nothing that I expected. I am just starting to read Emma Holly, but so far, I like her writing.

This book was pretty interesting. A girl gets seduced by an Upyr (Werewolf), but uses her courage & common sense to impress him. He takes her back to his pack & she becomes their Queen.

Hunting Midnight Hunting Midnight by Emma Holly Emma Holly is a beautifully written historical erotic paranormal romance. There aren't many authors in this exclusive niche, so I was curious to see how her story compared to others I've read. I wasn't disappointed, though it wasn't as compelling a read as I like. The hero, Ulric, felt two-dimensional for the first half of the book but won me as a worthy alpha-male by the end. Juliana was resistant to his wolf's thrall, though not entirely immune, so I found this young virgin's eagerness to spread her legs and then leave town to traipse hundreds of miles through 1370 English countryside to the wilds of Scotland with a complete stranger a bit unbelievable. The author uses magic and destiny to later explain why they seem to act against all common sense, and in some moments, against their natures; but it's not clear during the meet and the getting-to-know-you period. Ms. Holly is, as I mentioned, a truly talented writer and she pulls you into the experience of this story with the characters, which is what kept me reading. There are enough surprises and interesting twists on established lore to make this a book worth checking out. It is a true romance, so the HEA will leave you satisfied with the ending.

Hunting Midnight (Midnight, #3) by Emma Holly Ulric, an unusual name, a complex man. A leader whose personality crackles from the page. On the surface: arrogance. Dig deeper and you find a leader who carefully considers the safety and security of the people he leads. Alpha in all ways, yet balanced with compassion and fairness.

Particularly Powerful Prose

This one did it for me - 5 stars! After being such a prick to Gillian in the previous book, in Hunting Midnight Ulric is a complex and flawed character whose previous actions mean nothing to my liking him in his own story. Hanging out in Bridesmere after his abandonment by Gillian, Ulric finds Juliana, a runaway from an arranged marriage. Juliana blackmails him into assisting her, and she returns with him to his wolf pack in the cave in the Scottish woods. As most of the storyline develops during their travels or the pack's cave home, the book feels much more paranormal than the prior one.

After betrayal by his long-time love, Ulric had left his pack of upyr (vampire shapeshifters) and run to the city to forget. There he meets Julianna, a woman running from an arranged marriage to a man she despises and looking for freedom. As they travel, Ulric discovers an unusual draw to Julianna, a woman he cannot force to forget him and who does not fear his nature. But evil stalks them, and both must decide if they are willing to compromise enough to give love a chance and to save the pack.

I enjoyed seeing Ulric find love and healing after losing Gillian in Catching Midnight.

My first real venture into erotic fiction and I must say it was a delightful read. I enjoyed the characters and was pulled into this universe. I loved the use of words and even encountered a few that I had never seen or heard used before! There was good plot and the sex scenes were pretty hot. I enjoyed the superstitions around the Upyr and the race of beings themselves (a mix of werewolves and vampires).
I would certainly continue reading this series if I got the opportunity.

I couldn't get into this book for the life of me. I blame it on the writing style which reminded me a little of a "What I did last summer" essay by a 5th grader. Too much of "And than he said, and than she looked at him, and than she said" and there just wasn't any life in the characters. Also I couldn't wrap my head around that vampire/werewolf combination.

Book 3 in the midnight series, it was better than the previous one. The series is a romantic one, centering on true love found between vampire and human, then human being changed into vampire (umpyr). The series does not have the racier sex scenes that I consider trademark Emma Holly, but instead focuses on a very sweet and pure connection between the central man and woman to the tales.

Not as good as the first two stories in the series. This one they jumped right into the sex without enough development of the relationship or story.

Ulric is so annoying in Catching Midnight, and the first portion of this book. He is basically an emotional teenager. It is wonderful to see him grow up and attain more emotional maturity.
