When requesting this book, I had no clue that it was meant for kids! And that's probably because I think that feminists of any age can make use of this little A-Z book about amazing women! A woman is mentioned along with each letter (such as Oprah for "O"), along with a short paragraph describing how great each woman is. Each letter also includes a cute little rhyme that children and adults can use to remember the most important part about each woman (such as "O is for Oprah, openhearted oratory powerhouse")! Every letter also includes a quote from the woman it represents.
Through this book, I discovered some great women that I never knew about, and I'm so glad that I know about them now because of The A-Z of Wonder Women! I also really appreciated how this book was designed. I am living for the colour chosen for the cover, and how the four women on the cover were arranged to complement the lettering. The interior is designed in the same way with each section (one or two pages) having its own colour, and with the illustration for each woman and the lettering being arranged in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
I also appreciated that 22 more women were mentioned at the end of the book, and that overall, this book featured a diverse array of women from different cultures and regions from around the world!
Thanks so much to Hachette Book Group Canada for sending me a copy of this book for an honest review, as always, all opinions are my own.
This is an awesome little book that goes through 26 'wonder women' across time and history. I loved the alphabet organization, I thought that was very cool. I also loved how there was a quote included from each woman, it helped give me a sense of what they stood for and a bit about their personalities.
I'm not sure if I'd call this a children's book - mainly because of the smaller font and more complex works lean to a more mature reader but I think the pictures throughout make it a great storytime book where children can be told about these women, look at their picture, etc.
Overall, a super quick read but a very interesting one!
A nicely thought out selection of amazing women with some great and unusual choices. I’m amused that though 26 women are featured, there are a further 22 wonder women listed at the back because they were too brilliant to leave out. It’s an ideal starting point to introduce kids to outstanding female role models. It’s factual and well illustrated. Would make a great gift and a useful addition to school library shelves.
I wish there was more written about each woman, but I really appreciated the different women who were chosen for this book. The author didn’t choose super well-known famous figures (other than a couple like Oprah). Instead, she uses her book to teach about influential powerful women that made a difference without many people knowing about them.
I dig the concept, but there is precious little content. I learned about some new women, though, so that's a plus. I'm going to take this to work to have out in our office.
Another fantastic collection of inspirational women from all over the world. This little book features 26 women, one for each letter of the alphabet, with a lovely illustration, a quote, and a little excerpt about each woman.
Of course, cutting the list down to just 26 women must have been difficult indeed, and I'm glad to say that there are 22 more wonder women (without illustrations) listed in the back of the book.
I did find it slightly disappointing in how few facts were included for each person. Each biography was quite minimal with only one or two sentences. Otherwise, I loved how the usage of bold colors as backgrounds and the illustrations are well-done and clearly recognizable.
The A-Z of Wonder Women by Yvonne Lin is an informative book that includes 26 illustrated pages about strong, powerful women whose names correspond with the letters of the alphabet as well as 22 more women at the end of the book. This book includes stories from history and the present and covers many different walks of life including mathematicians, social and political activists, athletes and public icons to name a few. These women have stood the test of time and have proven to be Wonder Women all around the world. This book would be a great book for all grade levels from k-4 but especially in the upper grades of 3-5. I think this could be used as a morning meeting starter where the teacher reads one letter every day and introduces the students to a new icon. This book includes well known women like J.K. Rowling, Oprah Winfrey, Ruth Bater Ginsberd and Tina Fey but also women who are not as well known like Grace O’Malley, Maria Montessori, Qui Jin and Yayoi Kusama. Another use for this book in the classroom would be to photocopy each woman and pass them out to the class and let the students explore into their histories farther. This could also lead into a history report or a wax figure museum type of project. This book is a WOW book for me because after receiving it as a christmas present I realized that it is applicable to all children, boys and girls alike, and to so many ages. This book is an inspiration to me at 21 and I know it would be an inspiration to children as well. Children need wonderful, powerful and strong icons to look up to in order to achieve their greatest dreams and highest aspirations.
