Briefly - Would not have put this down though somewhat irritated at times. And that is NOT an 'epilogue'...

In full
The start of this with Mallory in London was as dark as it was powerful. Almost immediately it is clear this is not a story for the faint hearted. Switching then to Obe's story in West Cornwall the book takes on a different feel though no less interesting. There is obviously a connection between these diverse threads but what is it?

Having read and loved The String Diaries by this author I had some idea what to expect I guess. He manages to interweave myth and legend with a normal world very well. In this story you will learn some Turkish words! I ended up googling some of them with varying degrees of success. The ordinary drama (though it is not ordinary) plays out with undertones of the mystic/mysterious.

The main characters came over strongly in this book for the most part. That said I found it hard to really like any of them. Both Mallory and her sister were extremely strong characters but even Mallory wasn't that likeable. Obe was lovely but I still found him quite hard to really be involved with.

For the most part the writing here is extremely good. It makes for a tense and well paced read that I simply could not put down. The Turkish aspect didn't work as well as the equivalent in The String Diaries for me. There were times when the story felt very managed and contrived I guess though I would never have stopped reading it. As a warning it can be powerfully visceral at times.

And so to the end
"After violence, silence"
And that is not what I call an "epilogue" however I do hope that the author writes more books!

Note - I received an advance digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair review

I have read previous novels by Stephen Lloyd Jones, including his debut, “The String Diaries,” and have enjoyed them very much, so I was interested to read his latest. This is a little out of my normal comfort zone in terms of reading material – a fast paced thriller, with a supernatural, other worldly feel to it, which certainly kept me turning the pages.

Mallory Grace is a young woman who has been living, secretly in London. When we first encounter her, she has just killed an intruder in her house. It soon becomes apparent that Mallory has been expecting such a visit for some time – living in seclusion, aware that one day, these people would come to her door. For she is Arayici and a group of people, named the Vasi, are determined to wipe her kind out.

There is a reason why the Vasi have been able to suddenly trace Mallory and it concerns a young man, named Obadiah Macintosh, who Mallory met a few weeks earlier. Obadiah is another young person living a very secluded life, although, in his case, it is by choice. At first sight, he appears to be a rather nerdy, hippie type, who spends his night working at the West Penwith Animal Sanctuary and his days surfing on the beach. Now, both he and Mallory find their lives are in danger.

What follows is a frantic chase, with Mallory and Obadiah on the run; with a group of ruthless assassins on their trail. Despite the fact that this is a very action driven adventure, there are interesting characters – not least Aylah Incesu, an Arayici who has turned to working for the Vasi. Full of action, this is a well written, exciting read, which has an interesting background plot.

Literally frightening. This is one those cracking crime thrillers that I was glued to from the first page. I established the fact that stupidity Mallory left a window open, which an intruder climbs through. Maybe he was going to kill Mallory. The next part presented itself literally quite frightening. Mallory launched at the intruder killing him. Who wants to stay in a house with the smell of blood. Mallory Grace doesn't she packs her stuff and leaves, but soon she will have to kill again. The Silenced is one those crime novels oozing with danger and tension.

Another excellent edgy thriller here from Stephen Lloyd Jones - tense, atmospheric, beautifully drawn characters. I've been a fan since The String Diaries and this did not disappoint.

A full review will follow nearer publication.

Stephen Lloyd Jones is an excellent writer and I've enjoyed all of his books.

This one wasn't quite up to the standard of his previous efforts but is still a decent thriller with mild supernatural overtones.

The story follows an odd couple, comprising hard nosed anti-social Mallory and optimistic uber-dork Obe, being chased from location to location by an evil Turkish end-of-the-world sect called the Vasi.

It's all fine but never rises above that for me and the characters are just slightly off - Obe could have been wonderful but just felt a little *too* sweet, whilst Mallory was a little *too* misanthropic and baddie Aylah a bit *too* pantomime evil.

The ending also seemed a little rushed.

Overall a decent thriller but not on the same level as the author's other books for me.

Well this book certainly starts as it means to go on! Right from the off there is 1 bloody dead body and the body count continues to rise. Im not sure what category I would put this book in, Supernatural Thriller would be the most accurate – I think!!

Fast paced and unbelievably hard to put down so be prepared to lose some sleep!

The beginning of the book was almost like I had jumped straight into the middle of a story as opposed to just beginning one, but thankfully we do eventually get the back story to our two protagonists and it clicks everything into place and explains things that some of us might not have already worked out.

The two main characters, Mallory and Obadiah both have a story to tell as well as their shared one and even though they make a strange couple, i guess opposites do attract! Mallory – hard as nails, cynical, defensive and a complete negative view to life, whereas Obe – gentle, kind, compassionate and his positive outlook to life make for some interesting reading.

This is quite a hard book to review without giving too much away so I will just leave my review as my impressions and thoughts as opposed to out laying the storyline beyond what you already know so I don’t ruin it for anyone. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked this book up as the book blurb doesn’t give too much away and for me that added to the books appeal so my advice – just go for it and enjoy one hell of a story!

Even if you’re not a huge fantasy / sci-fi fan, if you enjoy a fast paced thriller you will enjoy this!

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.

This is essentially an action adventure with a slightly supernatural edge and a smidgen of religion. It starts with a young woman, Mallory, who has been living and hiding in London. After being attacked in her home she manages to escape and goes on the run from violent types who want her dead. Then there is a young man, Obadiah (or Obe as he likes to be called), in Cornwall who also goes on the run because of a connection he has to Mallory. Between them these two may hold the key to mankind's salvation, provided they aren't murdered by the nasty folks chasing them.

The story proper takes absolutely ages to get going. All the fighting and constant descriptions of weapons early on almost had me calling it a day as I was getting tired of waiting for the story to kick in. But I really enjoyed Obe's introduction. His affinity with the animals he cared for and the way he talked to them was endearing and amusing at times too.

Overall I liked this book but I didn't love it. The characters are mostly really well fleshed out, particularly Obe, without whom I doubt I would have got more than 20% through this book. Some of the 'baddies' are a little cartoonish but that just made them even more evil and hateful. And once the story kicks in, especially in the last third of the book, it really is pretty good. I just wish it had got going a bit quicker.

From the very first few pages a chase begins that will be certainly be memorable, both for its characters and it's finely crafted settings. I likened Jones to Koontz in a previous review and that remains true for The Silenced too. It's old school Koontz too, which was more descriptive, less poetic - the story is tighter though, the characters not quite as black and white. In fact, the protagonists in this tale are all flawed by design, making it feel so real, the discourse at times is uncomfortable yet very plausible. This excellent characterisation is vital; the complexity of characters is slowly teased out, with less obvious mechanics utilised to hold back revelations that are seen in many books. The approach to revelations is finely honed in The Silence. Each page is a delight, as information is revealed and characters are developed the story pulls you further and further in. Jones doesn't explain anything just because it's happening, you're in the dark, yet not it's not frustrating, it's enticing.

The story is fast paced and although the plot is relatively simple, a significant part of the book is not action oriented. These may sound like criticisms and I assure they are not. Jones shows he is becoming an author who should (and hopefully will) challenge the supernatural greats of our time.

Entertaining and deliciously dark, The Silenced offers hope, but only if you read it will you see if it's a false promise.

A massively entertaining thriller which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Mallory is one of the few of her race left, an Arayici hidden through the years and hunted by a worldwide secretive organisation The Vasi, evil and obsessed with destroying the Arayici.
Mallory is a hunted woman, living a hidden life in London, she is discovered by the Vasi and attacked savagely in her own home, thankfully she escapes and discovers she is pregnant by a man called Obadiah, Obe is also special and little do they know, their child will have massively important powers.
Both Mallory and Obe meet up and are on the run trying to outsmart the evil Vasi killers, can they evade them long enough for Mallory to have her baby?
A nerve wracking suspense filled journey of terror from London to Cornwall, Wales, the north of England and then to France, Italy and Spain. Addictive nail-biting stuff. Loved every minute!

So this is a super short review because I’m still reading The Silenced! I know its terrible and I should be more organised. But here’s what I think so far:

I read Stephen first book The String Diaries and I loved it – this author manages to mix fantasy with a fast-paced thriller. I am have only started this book but the pages are begging me to turn them and read late into the night. Only having to go to work is stopping me.

There have been a couple of moments when I have felt my heart racing and heart stopping at the same time. Some bits have been truly terrifying and made me want the light.

But here’s to five o’clock when its finally the weekend and I can crack on with fabulous book. And a full review will appear as soon as I can!

A strange one this....Reading it felt like you had jumped into the middle of a trilogy giving a sense of confusion as you try to catch up with the story. It is about half way through that you start to get some reveals that help you understand what is going on.
It’s a chase story as a young couple flee an organisation that want to kill them and we find that the reason may relate to the future of humanity...supernatural elements are pretty low, it’s more about the chase alongside hope for the future.
It’s okay, the characters have real personality and they do grow on you, but the basic plot and background doesn’t work so well and felt a little forced to give a frame to the chase. So “okay” but lacking that something special to make it really memorable and engaging.

This is a fast paced mystery/thriller with a little bit of fantasy/supernatural thrown in. The book has a very violent beginning as a young woman (Mallory) is fighting for her life after killing one of her assailants. She's in a darkened house with the smell of blood all around her as she scrabbles to get her emergency belongings together. She knew this day would come one day but it was still unexpected when it did. As she goes through the house you can sense her terror as well as her will to survive. She has her escape plan in motion, but she doesn't know if the attacker was on his own or if he has a partner in crime.

What develops is a fight to survive as she flees. She must find the boy she hooked up with three weeks ago as he holds some of the answers to why her hunters have found her. She already suspects the truth but needs to know more.

Obadiah or Obe as he is called in the book is a young man who had a liaison with Mallory three weeks earlier only to wake up the next morning alone. He has gone back to his life on the animal sanctuary in Penwith, Cornwall. The remoteness suits him as he had lived there for the past 3 years away from other people as much as possible. His life is changed as men from the same group of people that are hunting Mallory have come to kill him too.

The book is edgy and fast paced with a few quieter moments in-between as a ruthless woman called Aylah who works for the death cult is in charge of the hunt for Mallory and Obe and is much closer to things than is first apparent. She is never more than a few steps away from catching her prey, with the goal of obliterating them. The hunt covers parts of England and Europe as Obe and Mallory go on the run together to protect each other and the promise of the future they hold.

When I first started reading The Silenced I was determined to keep a distance from the characters. After all, when evil is on the hunt, inevitably there’s going to be some kind of ending … but I found it impossible to hold myself apart and even found myself wavering towards the evil that’s honed specifically to destroy Mallory and Obe. So that’s the first thing to be aware of. These characters are easy to love and will cause you many moments of suspense, worry and tears. As will Yoda! The characters experience some extreme conditions and you’ll find yourself willing them on, although to what end?

I loved the chase! London, Cornwall, the Lake District, Yorkshire, Wales, Weymouth, Chesil Beach, France, Italy, Spain … each setting has dangers and blessings and because Stephen Lloyd Jones’ writing is so vivid and visual, it’s easy to immerse yourself in each scene. It really is edge of your seat tension. And there isn’t a place in the story where you can stop either which makes for a page turner (and late nights – just one more chapter syndrome!). Something else to be aware of.

The reason? Ancient feud. Bloodlines. Metaphysical. Supernatural. A gift. A leader and dictator who rules by breaking his followers spirits with depravity and pain; making his way of reasoning seem valid and logical ensuring detachment and betrayals. Such a powerful force and with connections in all sorts of places – easy to leave no avenue unexplored on the hunt to kill. Where one simple mistake could cost a life …

The Silenced is fast paced, dark and yes, it does have hope and light. For me, another outstanding read from this author. Don’t miss it!

I haven't read anything by this author before, I was hooked from the start. A fantasy thriller that I was reluctant to put down. The story unfolds at a good pace, the characterisation is fabulous, an age old tale of the battle between good and evil but with a modern take on it.
Mallory is fighting for her life, she killed a man and will do so again to protect everything she holds dear. Obadiah is a loner with a secret, between them they may hold the future of humanity in their hands. Together they run from an organisation bent on the destruction of mankind.
I would be very happy to read a sequel to this one and I plan on reading more by the author.
