In this delightful and witty third book in our wonderful series created by veteran dog trainer Lee Charles Kelley, a clever kennel owner, his lady love, and his loyal canines must solve their most sinister mystery yet!
One of Maine kennel owner Jack Field's favourite pastimes is spending quality time with a fun-loving pooch--which is why he's playing fetch with a Corgi named Tipper instead of mingling at a July 4th shindig. But when Tipper returns with a bloodstained boating cap in his teeth, the ex-New York cop decides to investigate...and finds an anonymous dead body clutching the tennis ball Jack tossed away moments before. The local law think Jack's the killer, since he had the opportunity and, as it turns out, a motive. Even his loyal and lovely fiancée, sometime medical examiner Dr. Jamie Cutter, is troubled by evidence that contradicts Jack's tale. Someone's going to great lengths to frame Jack Field, and he's determined to find out why--even though everyone, from a powerful tycoon to a Miami drug lord to a whole passel of professional killers, is equally determined to see him doggoned dead!
I'm a dog trainer, songwriter, voiceover actor, and bestselling mystery novelist* living in New York City. I've been using Natural Dog Training techniques since 1992. I write words and music, mostly for Sinatra-style songs and have a few minor songwriting credits (very minor, I'm afraid) including the libretto for a full-length musical comedy. I've been doing voice work since I was 17 (I'm now in my mid-50s) and still do radio commercials and TV voiceovers. I also write a series of dog mysteries featuring ex-NYPD detective turned dog trainer, Jack Field, and his smart and sexy ladylove, state medical examiner Dr. Jamie Cutter. My books are best described as a combination of murder mystery, romantic comedy, and dog training manual, all rolled up into one great read. *(My 4th novel, TWAS THE BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS was a bestseller.)
The book is Ok. I love to read books that have dogs in the forefront and being set in Maine, what could be better. But he needs to fact check his books. It drives me crazy when people set a story in a place and then get the facts about that place wrong. Mentioning a species of birds that would never be present for example.
This is the third in a row I've read and I better take a break! I love the characters and the dogs and dog training. The plot was okay but the tv appearances and the helicopters and the trip to San Diego were too much. Plus Jack gets raunchier as he gets closer to married.
Jack Field, dog trainer/former cop, in a whodunit so silly, so stereotypical, so filled with brand names of Scotch and other cool stuff, that it is annoying to read. Too many named people who are never encountered again, too many named dogs ditto.
This is a great cozy from a male author. It deals with Jack and Jamie on a great mystery with his dog and many twists and turns along the way. Start with book one of this series. You'll be hooked.
