Two novellas, sold as one book.

The first, Rugged Defender, is a sweet, easy read.
Set in Whitehorse, Montana, during the holidays, this is a tale of young love revisited, with a dash of murder investigation on the side. Chloe Clementine and Justin Calhoun shared a magical kiss at the New Year’s Eve masquerade ball five years ago and haven’t seen each other since. Back in town, Chloe, now an investigative reporter, has been digging into the death of Justin’s brother, which was suspiciously ruled an accident. Set against a backdrop of family drama, flying bullets, and the thrill of a murder plot involving almost the entire town, Justin and Chloe wonder if the magic is still there. The plot worked well, and the writing flowed evenly from beginning to end.

The second story, Big Sky Dynasty was more to my liking with a grittier storyline. Dalton Corbett, married to the most evil woman on earth, has been living with that mistake for nine long years. Dalton and his brothers are called home to Whitehorse to help their father work the family ranch. With this new beginning, he imagines his devil wife to be out of his life forever. He couldn’t be more wrong. Georgia Michaels, on the other hand, is sweet and trusting, and when Dalton bursts into her yarn store like a bull in a china cabinet, sparks fly between her and the hunky cowboy. However, they have deadly obstacles to hurdle and his trying to keep Georgia’s friends from being murdered takes center stage. This tale held, more than the other, my interest.

The writing is solid, and it’s a quick book to finish. Overall, I liked it, not loved it.

This is a difficult one to score. Both stories are well written but generally lacked the wow factor that I’ve found in recent reads. 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Rugged Defender by BJ Daniels
Whitehorse, Montana: The Clementine Sisters series #3. Harlequin Intrigue romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series as the sisters play important roles.
Chloe Clementine is going home for the holidays to spend time with her sisters who are having a double wedding. She doesn’t intend to tell them she’s lost her investigative reporter job at the newspaper. When she finds out her long ago boyfriend is suspected of murdering his brother, she puts her skills to work on the cold case knowing Justin Calhoun would never harm anyone. But someone doesn’t want that case opened and both Chloe and Justin are in danger.

Chloe and Justin clearly still have feelings for each other during this suspenseful story.
I didn’t care for Justin’s father’s attitude and I’m sure it was difficult for Justin to face up to him.
This category line is more suspense than romance but it is included at the end and in the epilogue. Loved the sisters relationship and support. Chloe had a wonderful attitude about transitioning her job.
Great suspense and conclusion to the series.

A really good mystery. A little light on the romance end of things--but that was part of the relationship (I won't spoil it with an explanation). But a good lesson in creating palpable sexual tension without all the usual bells and whistles. The late night phone call was so romantic!

Great characters. An interesting assortment of suspects. A fun way to wrap up the Clementine Sisters trilogy.

I don't know what book the publishers read, but it's not the one that I did! The blurb on my copy says that Chloe Clementine is the recipient of not-so-nice presents from a Secret Santa stalker, each more threatening than the last.

Nope. Never happens.

Which is a pity, because that plot sounds more interesting than the one we get, which has Chloe, an "investigative reporter", digging into the death of Drew Calhoun five years ago, a man who pretty much has the whole town hating him. She's investigating the death, which was ruled an accident, seemingly because she has the hots for Drew's brother, Justin Calhoun, who she shared a kiss with some unspecified time ago (although she was dating someone else at the time) and has never, ever forgotten. Justin has also returned to Whitehorse to put things right. Or something.

The plot consists of Chloe and Justin talking to the various people they believe had motive to murder Drew, mostly consisting of the various women he had slept with, until they learn of a bad investment, providing further motive. Sometimes they investigate together, sometimes they investigate alone.

However, together or apart, I didn't get a feel at all for any sort of romance between these two. Justin and Chloe are complete cardboard cut-outs with little personality or complexity. They barely have any sort of conversation that would indicate they're connecting on any sort of level whatsoever. They're merely hood ornaments, going where the author needs them to go. The mystery element is mildly interesting, but provides no real high stakes, and the resolution, of course, is entirely arbitrary.

And Chloe really racks up the Too Stupid To Live moments! Despite knowing a killer is out there, she's constantly telling her sisters to take off and leave her alone. Then Points off also for that gratuitous punch-up between Justin and CJ!

I generally like B.J. Daniels' work, but this mini-series has been a bit underwhelming. Here, the flat and uninteresting h and H was the biggest liability. If they had felt like actual people, I might have cared more about the mystery plot they were wrapped up in.

And that's a very egregious error, putting a plot description on your product that is completely incorrect - and misleading!

Fabulous conclusion to this trilogy!

“Best be ready for the consequences when you go poking a porcupine with a stick, missy. Someone’s bound to get hurt and it won’t be the porcupine.”

Rugged Defender is the fabulous conclusion to B.J. Daniel’s Whitehorse Montana: The Clementine Sisters Trilogy. It features cowboy Justin Calhoun and investigative reporter Chloe Clementine, the final Clementine sister with an untold story.

The story opens just as Chloe is about to head out to spend the holidays with her sisters. She is blindsided by the news that she’s being downsized from her job as the digital age has brought cutbacks to her newspaper and she’s been caught in the layoffs. Not wanting to disappoint her sisters and desperately needing time away anyway, Chloe decides to proceed with her plans and heads home to Whitehorse, Montana.

Investigating is in Chloe’s blood. So, even though she’s no longer employed, when she discovers that Justin, the man she’d had a crush on years ago in her pre-college days, is suspected of his brother’s death, she can’t resist looking into it. She knows in her heart that Justin couldn’t have hurt his brother, much less killed him, and she’s driven to prove it.

Shortly after his brother’s demise with his father’s accusations weighing heavily upon him, Justin left town to make his way elsewhere. Now, years later, Justin receives a call that Chloe – the girl he’s always thought of as the one who got away – is in Whitehorse and in trouble. Tired of running from his past, he decides that it’s time for him to go home, confront his father, and help Chloe. He arrives back in Whitehorse shortly after Chloe.

When he discovers that Chloe is putting herself in harm’s way to clear his name, he’s not happy. But, he quickly discovers that there is no stopping Chloe once she’s on the trail of a story. Since he can’t get her to back off the investigation, he insists on working it with her as a team. A big benefit of his strategy is that spending all that time together gives them both a chance to get to know each other better.

I really liked Chloe and Justin. She’s stubborn and focused. He’s resolved to make things right with his father and claim his birthright. However, the more the two looked into the past, the more people surfaced that didn’t want the case re-opened. Their romance was in the background for much of the story as their focus was on their investigation. Even so, I enjoyed the development of their relationship and the undercurrent of their smoldering chemistry was palpable throughout.

Following please find a few of my favorite lines from Rugged Defender:

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that people aren’t always who you think they are.”
---
“So, what’s our next move?”
He grinned. “I know what I’d like mine to be.”
---
Stupid girl. Now she was going to have to die.

B.J. sure knows how to spin a great tale! Each and every one of the stories in this trilogy have been wonderful romantic mysteries on their own. Like the others, this tale was teeming with fast-paced, non-stop action and unexpected twists and turns. This tale kept me up way past my bedtime as B.J. kept me guessing as to the murderer’s identity until the very end. The final confrontation was epic. AND, the epilogue is guaranteed to leave you with a huge contented smile as B.J. wraps up the entire series with a big tidy bow. If you enjoy sexy cowboys, well-planned plot lines and sweet romantic suspense, I’d highly recommend that you pick up Rugged Defender soon!

Fantastic conclusion to the series, though the story doesn't match the blurb other than the names. Chloe is an investigative reporter was downsized from her job right before coming home for the holidays. She hasn't lost that need to investigate, and when she finds out that the man she'd had a crush on had been suspected of killing his brother, she couldn't resist looking into it. Justin had left town after Drew's death and his father's accusations against him. Five years later he got a call telling him that Chloe was in trouble, and even though he found out it wasn't true (the circumstances were pretty funny), he decided it was time to go home and confront his father.

I really liked both Justin and Chloe. She is stubborn and determined, and when she gets involved in a story, she's all in. She was also quite certain that there was no way that Justin would have hurt Drew, much less killed him. Justin's relationship with his father had never been a good one, but he's tired of running from his past. I liked seeing him confront his father, and also watch out for him.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Justin and Chloe. They had a little bit of a history, sharing one magical winter kiss that neither had forgotten. Nothing came of it because Chloe left for school and Justin left town because of Drew's death. Both of them returned to Whitehorse at about the same time. Chloe has just started her investigation and has already begun ruffling feathers when Justin witnesses her nearly being run down. He's not happy about her investigation but can tell that she won't back off. He insists on working with her so that he can protect her. Spending all that time together gives them the chance to get to know each other better, and the simmering attraction continues to grow. I loved Chloe's conviction that Justin is innocent and her determination to prove it. I liked Justin's admiration for Chloe and her abilities, and also his protectiveness when the danger intensified. There were also some really sweet scenes between them, and I loved how Chloe's sisters aided and abetted those moments. Justin had a pretty big romantic streak, and I loved his plans for their next kiss. The epilogue was a fantastic wrap-up to the series, with its main event not being a surprise at all.

The suspense and action of the story were fantastic. From the moment Chloe got involved the action was almost non-stop. I loved how her instincts had her suspecting murder in spite of the initial ruling of accidental death. The more that she and Justin looked into Drew's past and activities, the more people they found who might have had a reason to kill him. Chloe also has an ex-boyfriend who makes some seriously scary moves. There were quite a few twists and turns that really kept me guessing as to who the murderer was. I was on the edge of my seat during the final confrontation as I waited to see how it was going to turn out.

I think this one was my favorite of the 3 Clementine sisters books! To me, it had the most action and the most surprises! It really did keep me up at night until I finished it and I loved the ending! It was truly a suspense! Chloe was an investigative reporter and since she had lost her job before she came back to Montana to be with her sisters, she still had that desire to "investigate something"! She had a crush on Justin many years ago but hasn't seen him since his brother was killed and he left town. Chloe decides that maybe Justin's brother wasn't killed "accidentally" as the law claims so she decides to start her own investigation! Justin comes back about the same time to face his father, who has always believed that he killed his brother. Justin finds out about Chloe's investigation and isn't happy about it but joins with her to keep her safe. They make a good team. However, that's when the action starts! I enjoyed the other characters in the book, and there are many! It was fun to have Chloe's sisters back too. I encourage everyone to read this exciting book! As with any B.J. Daniels' book, there are lots of twists and turns!

I think this third book in the Clementine Sisters Series from B.J. Daniels is the best of the trio. This one seemed to have more action, more suspense and more twists and turns than the other two books. I thought it started out a bit corny, though; a kiss shared many years ago that neither Chloe nor Justin forgot? I’m just a bit too cynical to buy that, but for the sake of the story, I left my own prejudices behind.

Chloe, in Whitehorse again for the holidays with her sisters has lost her job as an investigative reporter. The digital age brought cutbacks to her newspaper and she got caught in the layoffs. But, as an investigative reporter, Chloe wants the truth about the death of Drew Calhoun – her one time boyfriend’s brother. She and Justin may have parted ways when she went away to college, but she knew in her heart that there was no way Justin would have or could have killed his brother – no matter what the people of Whitehorse thought. With time on her hand and Justin back in town, Chloe is driven to solve the mystery and free Justin from the past. Someone doesn’t want the story told, though.

If you have read any of my reviews of any of the Whitehorse books from B.J. Daniels, you know I would love to live in that town where there’s a mystery behind every corner and interesting characters in every house, bar and shop. I received this book for free in return for an honest review. In my honest opinion, you can’t find a better romance/intrigue author. B.J. Daniels knows how to spin a tale and pull you right in. I heartily recommend this book, which can be read as a standalone and doesn’t give away anything from the first two in the series.

This is the last book in this series..It did not disappoint..I loved getting to see what drives Chloe, the last Clementine sister...Her one true kiss that she got was from Justin..He calls her out of the blue saying he would help her..but she doesn't know what that is about..Her sisters had set this up! He decides to come home and confront his father and others that believed he killed his brother those years ago...Chloe starts investigating and is almost run over..Justin decides to help...They find all kinds of things out along the way about Drew, Justin's brother...But they couldn't figure out til it was almost to late who hated Drew enough to kill him. This was a book that I couldn't put down!

Chloe was an Investigative Reporter until she was laid off work. She has come home to Whitehorse for the holidays and the weddings of her two sisters. She really likes Justin and remembers their earth shaking kiss from high school. Her sisters put in an anonymous call to him and tells him that Chloe is in trouble and needs him.

Justin remembers that kiss too and comes home after five years even though the town and his Dad think he is the one who murdered his brother, Drew. Now Chloe has decided to investigate the murder which the Sheriff and the coroner ruled it as an accident.

Loved this book but I knew that I would when I saw the author's name. I don't think that I have read a bad book by B.J. Daniels.

This is the third book in the Clementine sisters series. Chloe was just laid off as an investigative reporter and with the help of her sisters reconnected with Justin. They had a moment when they were younger, then she left for college and Justin brother Drew died. It was ruled a suicide yet his father believes he murdered him. Chloe read the report and knows it was murder and is going to solve this. This book is a roller coaster. She is threatened, almost run over and her ex has made the story so much more complicated. The story had so many suspects that it was nail biting trying to figure out who the murder was. This was the perfect ending to the Clementine series.

This book is the third in a series but I read it as a stand alone. I was hoping for a little more romance but it is good in a "I've gotta know what happened" kind of way. For Justin, Chloe is the one who got away. The blurb on the back refers to Christmas but there is no holiday feel to the story. Chloe is back in town visiting her sisters and can't let the investigative reporter in her rest. When she finds out about Justin and his brother she embarks on an adventure to find out the truth. When Justin joins her on the journey will they discover that the sparks are still there all these years later? Good read.

B. J. Daniels does it again. She always seems to know how to finish a book. I love the way she does the last Clementine. Chloe is a investigative reporter she's like a dog with a bone. She wants to find the truth behind the death of Justin Calhoun's brother. The two work together to solve the mystery but there is a lot of action along the way. There are some neat twists in the plot that will have you guessing as to what is happening next. There is a surprise as to who done it and as to how the story ends. It will be a pleasant surprise for everyone.

Justin Calhoun and Chloe Clementine shared a kiss years ago and they both still remember it. Chloe’s sisters manage to track Justin down so he calls Chloe and they plan to attend the New Year’s Eve dance.

Justin had left Whitehorse because his father accused him of murdering his brother. The sheriff ruled the brother’s death an accident. When Chloe decides to investigate the death, she stirs up a hornet’s nest. Justin is right beside her.

Great, fun read!

Wonderful story about all three sisters, Annabelle, Chloe and Tessa. Justin (a cowboy) had kissed Chloe years ago and he can't think of any other girl he'd like to kiss again (he left his home after his brother died) so he decided to go back home. He finds his dad in bad health and the story starts from there.

Satisfying Conclusion

As the last of the Clementine sisters trilogy this book gives a compelling mystery as well as a comprehensive wrap up. While this can easily be a stand alone read, it is more enjoyable if you have read the first two books. Ms. Daniels again provided an intriguing mystery with a good romance .

Wonderful!

The last of the Clementine sisters is on a mission to clear the name of the man she has never been able to forget after only one kiss. Justin's father believes that he killed his older brother. Chole and justin team up to solve his brothers murder. The mystery and suspense will have you on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding. Absolutely loved it.

Mysterious and intriguing but it blew too fast and everything happens almost all at once. The action was thrilling but the romance sucks. It's like watching too teenagers wanting to make out but not sure how to actually do it. It was too slow in the beginning and then it all happened at once in the end making everything rushed. It was weird.

The only sexy thing that happens in this book is a kiss in the snow. Also, the blurb is in no way related to the actual plot of the book (no creepy Secret Santas to be found!)

And then it ends with

I really enjoyed this intriguing romance. I bought this at a local library book sale and I voluntarily choose to review this story. I've given it a 5* rating. This had a lot of action and a lot of violence. But the hero and the heroine were out to solve a murder but was it a really cold case? People were getting nervous and some started talking. Lots to learn about this little town.
