The sixth volume of the Conan Omnibus published by Dark Horse Books is entitled, "Savagery and Sorrow." The book is part of a series of graphic novels in trade paperback format with glossy, high-quality pages that imitate the Marvel Comics Savage Sword of Conan Epic stories. This is just another iteration of Robert E. Howard's work through the eyes of a different creative team.

Although Brian Wood gets top credit as the author there are numerous writers and artists that warrant credit for the volume. Fred Van Lente, and Davide Gianfelice are to a lesser degree literary collaborators whereas Massimo Carnevale's paintings deepen the beauty of that fantasy realm. Davide Gianfelice is also an artist who provides depth to the artistic offerings, but there is at least a half dozen other artists deserving mention. Paul Azaceta, Riccardo Burchielli, Brian Ching, Eduardo Francisco, Mirko Colak, Andrea Mutti, Pierluigi Baldassini, and Leandro Fernandez all add beauty to the entire visual endeavor.

The Nightmare of the Shallows, continues the stories of Conan as a pirate, traveling with Belit, the Pirate Queen, and the crew to cause mayhem everywhere they would go. These are the final stories celebrating the pirate queen that will require the addition of The Song of Belit, and Shadows over Kush. I loved this book. It was not just well-written; it was emotionally jarring.

Woe and wailing. Probably the best arc in conan I've ever read. Pick this up. Ponder it. Feel the weight of this wonderful story.
