Nice 'warning' to start the book off. "A vast majority of people in our technological society think they will never find themselves suddenly cut off from the rest of the world." Then it goes on to mention instances where this indeed happens. The author cites a time when he was helping to find a hunter lost in Georgia. They lost person had little hunting experience, but did have extensive survival training. When they found him 2 days later, he had practically built a homestead. It was so good, the rescue team stayed overnight before leaving the next day.
Final intro tip: "Relax. You may even enjoy your unplanned stay in the woods."
Key: 2 lb survival kit on page 21 picture. List on pg 24
VERY readable book. Lots of 'common sense'. I like that this book is PRACTICAL.
Appendix 1: BSA Requirements for the wilderness survival merit badge.
My kids did some time in scouts. These BSA merit badges are excellent. Visit the BSA merit badge site(s).
Appendix II: Web addresses for survival products mentioned in this book.

I'm now a girl scout. Ok. Just a volunteer. I signed up for both my kids but I'm going to be teaching the stuff in this book to the kids.

Why isn't this sort of stuff in the GS curriculum? Hmm..

But this book. Good stuff

Straight to the point. Good examples. Accessible. And the book is over engineered so it can be taken out doors, gotten dirty, and still be intact.

Well done.

Now, back to that question...

Although this book seemed geared more for a younger reader age, there were a few gems inside and plenty of reminders to be prepared for any situation. I admit that I have been updating and stocking my car better after reading this book.

You won’t become Bear Grills but a good candidate for a quick rescue.
