The year is 1964, and the top secret group Operation Red Dragon has been utilizing advanced technology and superhuman soldiers to keep Kaiju - prehistoric survivors and modern mutations of varying size and strength - from destroying humanity since the end of World War II. Theirs has been a constant struggle to keep these horrifying creatures at bay, and despite some close calls, the world has remained safe. The struggle is about to escalate, however. The Daikaiju - the largest, most powerful creatures in all of creation - are about to make this secret war very public, and the destruction from their fast-approaching battle will be catastrophic. Fortunately, the agents of Operation Red Dragon have a plan - not necessarily to prevent the fight, but to keep human civilization intact when the dust settles. For this plan to work, they need one down-on-his-luck reporter to serve as their witness...assuming he can cope with the absurdity of it all.
Big thumbs up from me! Lots of development is seen in the the characters and the story is fresh, while also taking elements from Godzilla, but it doesn't ever feel like a ripoff. It feels like its own thing.
Man! I cannot wait to read part two! This was a great book. LOTS of action and suspense. I like the idea of good Kaiju vs bad Kaiju and the choice humankind has to make. I could not put this one down. And the language was clean. Don't need a lot of foul language to make a great story. Hey Kaiju fans...ya gotta get this one. I will definitely follow this author.
To my dismay, it's practically every Godzilla movie combined into one book even down to scenes that are stolen, too. All the monsters are rip offs.
This is fan fiction repurposed badly into a story and somehow got published. Kozerah(Gojira) Is basically Shin Godzilla with a horn. It comes complete with a purple beam and eats radiation, can it literally be anything else, honestly?
Armadagger is Angurius, to a tee! Plus that name is weird, all the monster names are weird.
Exoskel is Megalon.
Barracudasaurus, that name, wow, is Titanosaurus.
The only true "Homage" in the book as far as I can tell is Wanirah. An evil monster that very much resembles every 50's crocodile with fins attached to it, or Lizzy from Rampage in the new movie.
And so it goes.
It has an Anime Catgirl in it. A Cole McGrath Ripoff and a guy named X who strolled right out of the 1990's anti hero theme playbook. Dark trench coat, big guns, you get the picture. None of the characters are developed very well.
If you are a Godzilla fan at all and read this book, keep your expectations low. This is a fan fiction that was repurposed into an "Original" story with the thinnest layers of difference to be his own.
I had high hopes when I got this book because the author is a YouTuber who seems to know his stuff and makes great videos. I subscribe to his channel. No, I won't unsub because of a book. I still like his videos.
It was the first Kaiju book not related to Godzilla I ever bought and when I read it. I was supremely disappointed.
I hope he puts more effort into the next one if there is one. I'd like to see what he can really do rather than relying so much on the easy marks and putting weak costumes on already established monsters and characters and calling them original. You obviously have the energy for this. It's time to show some effort!
You even name drop Cthulhu for no reason, and when you do it in the story, no one cares!
Come up with something that's not different in name only.
I still believe in you. This book is not your best work and I can't recommend it to anyone.
There are ways in which this book kind of feels like "what if the MCU started with Avengers and introduced a reporter character to explain everything to" but I have to admit, I really didn't find any of the cast interesting enough to really want their origin story so I'm not complaining here. I do respect the author's level headed nature on youtube, he never seems to have gotten too caught up in any drama or put too much stock into rumors. I'm almost sorry I don't like the book better, I'd call it a low 3, but there's always room to do better with the next installment.
I took way too long to read this, but regardless, I enjoyed this, the debut novel of Ryan Collins. It moves briskly and has fun pulp-inspired characters that would be at home in a comic book. My big criticism is the book gets mired in its worldbuilding at the expense of said characters. I can forgive that because this is not only a first novel, it’s the first of a series. With the world firmly established now, a future book can focus on other priorities.
I think this book did too much for itself. Too many monsters all at once with very little time spent on them. For me, if you were going to do an all-out monster brawl with every monster, save it for the last book. The characters, too, were all too special to me. They seemed very one-dimensional with forced dialogue. I can see there can be good things but it book should have taken its time and lower the scale of the battle.
