Robert F Barker was born in Liverpool, England. During a thirty-year police career, he worked in and around some of the Northwest UK’s grittiest towns and cities. As a senior detective, he led investigations into all kinds of major crime including, murder, armed robbery, serious sex crime and people/drug trafficking. Argh! I got so tired of waiting for the inconclusive climax I skimmed most of the second half. As much as I liked book one and two I didn't enjoy this one as much as I hoped because of the never ending chase for the protagonist. I'm hesitant to read more of Barker's work. This book is a prime example of why I dislike extended series. After two or three volumes I'm silently screaming, get on with it already!
I give this a 2.5 rating.

So much potential...

I read all three books in this series. I suppose I kept thinking things would improve. The main problem I had with this series has to do with plausibility - of which there was very little. A Big minus. Add to that the many times the author would make strange remarks without further elucidation making one think he - and Only he - knew what he was referring to while None of it seemed related just left me confused & frustrated. Further, the main character seemed weak, unprofessional & bumbling in his many efforts -making it difficult to root for him. Yeah, I did push thru all three books but it wasn't easy & I won't be checking out any others at this point. I really dislike giving less than positive reviews but just can't honestly give more than a 2 rating - perhaps it's just me.

In this third book of the Worshipper series, DCI Jamie Carver has to contend with two brutal killers, one of whom mesmerizes him. He ends up working outside of his jurisdiction (and outside the law) to bring a resolution to a harrowing case.

As with the other two books in the Worshipper Trilogy, I found this hard to read because of the dark, gritty, graphic nature of the subject matter (BDSM, a priest who is off the rails, child abuse, random murders, you name it). But I also couldn’t put it down because I had to find out what happened to the hapless American tourists, the killers, and Carver and his crew.

The writing is tight, the plot engaging, and the ending a complete surprise. Carver is flawed but ultimately honorable, and seems like a real person to me. All of the characters, even the minor ones, had depth. I did have to page past some of the descriptions, because I’m kind of squeamish, but I stayed because I really needed to know how it all turned out, and whether Carver was OK at the end.

No spoilers here, but while this is a fitting end to the Worshipper Trilogy, there is a book 4, at least, for Carver. This series is best read in order (even if you need to take recovery breaks between the stories).

A brilliant ending to a breathtaking trilogy

This final chapter in the Worshipper Trilogy was absolutely amazing. It totally held my attention from start to finish, so much so that I found it almost impossible to put down. Following on from the previous title, Final Breath, it takes us on an exciting chase through the suburbs of Paris and the surrounding districts, in Carver’s attempt to catch his dangerous adversary, Megan Crane. Having been informed that the dominatrix had fled to France after her escape at the end of the last book, Carver goes to work with the French police to set up a trap that he hopes will lure her to her arrest. Along the way he is asked to give support to the local police to find a serial murderer who has been alluding them for too long. Gradually we see the two cases merge ever closer as Carver is driven by his addiction to catch Crane by whatever means he can. Sadly, a few too many innocent people are taken down along the way. The fast paced and horrifying race to the end keeps the reader turning pages well into the night. The finale is spectacular and so completely unexpected, leaving the reader trying to decide whether there will be more to come. This, coupled with the very last mystifying paragraphs, leave the reader eager to read the next In this outstanding series.

This author uses short, punchy sentences to create high tension and drama. He is well versed at keeping the reader’s attention and making us feel that we have become part of the tense drama that unfolds before us. There are very few authors who can keep me so gripped that I have to dive straight into their next book, but Mr Barker is certainly one of them.

If you’ve read the two DCI Jamie Carver books which precede this one—and you must have, if you reading this—then you know that strong stomach is required for some of the abhorrent practices which are unearthed during the course of the hunt for the psychopathic murderer. Despite turning my stomach settings to full strength, however, the vile depths to which the twisted perpetrator will stoop turned it upside down and triggered me, to some extent.

The action has moved to Paris, and alongside his own quest to bring his quarry to justice, Carver becomes part of the local force’s hunt for their own serial killer. The story was well-told, with only a few typos—which seem to be the norm these days, so no marks lost there. I formed my own ideas as to what was going on—although I didn’t get everything, of course—and I was glad to see that the author did what I wanted him to at the end. Only to a certain extent though, and the story didn’t twist in quite the right direction for me, I’m afraid. Three volumes is enough, and I’ve appreciated—enjoyed isn’t the right word for this material—what I’ve read. I’m ready to let Jamie go at this point, although I wish him well for the future.

Worth the read

The continuing struggle to catch the killer, the nearly happily ever after ending with a teaser to boot. Predictable, but with the engaging characters, the well developed plot, twists and turns an all together enjoyable read.

Another brilliant book in the trilogy

I just wanted the book to go on and on. I love the way Robert Barker writes. It had me guessing and I was breathless in anticipation for what was going to happen next. I look forward to reading your next book. Thank you.

I'm going to start by saying I'm not particularly a fan of British authors or UK set books. Purely due to preference alone. Occasionally I do stumble across the exception and the Carver books are without a doubt one of those. Please note that this review is being left for all four of these books that I have read. Simply because I do not wish to give any spoilers etc.  The writing is excellent, the plots gripping, and the characters believable.  I read one after another because they keep you guessing. Very impressed so far and I look forward to the next. Edge of your seat stuff and without a doubt recommended.

A captivating and well constructed story.

Robert Barker is a gifted story teller. There are many twists and turns, some you don't expect. The author leads you through a complex storyline, making great use of his ability to clearly describe people and places so you can easily see them.

Gritty Suspense

If you liked the first two books in the series, this installment won't disappoint. It may be able to stand on its own, but there is a lot of reference to events from the previous books, so works best as the third in the trilogy.

Awesome utterly captivating.

Barker's reign over the genre is still strong. He captures realistic characters, bares their failings, emotions and strengths.

Couldn't put it down.. want more!
